The Sacramento Kings passed a big test on Sunday in Los Angeles. The Kings defeated the Clippers by a final of 113-110. It was a big way to cap off an amazing weekend of winning for the Kings. They also beat the Denver Nuggets on Saturday on the first night of the back to back.

On Tuesday, the Kings were preparing to take on the West leading Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers were heading into Tuesday’s game at 17-7 on the year. The Kings stood at 12-11 after winning their previous four games. Tip-off was set for 7 PM PST in Sacramento. The Kings ran out of time and room to catch up to the 76ers in the four quarter falling behind in a 119-111 loss at Golden One Center.

In the first half, it was a tale of two quarters. The first quarter was one of the worst played by the Kings this year. They were out scored 42-32 in the opening frame and neither team played any defense. In the second quarter, the Kings roared back. The Kings offense continued to put up numbers as they out scored the 76ers 39-24 to take a 71-66 lead into halftime. The Kings would look to continue a stretch of closing out games and take the victory from the 76ers.

In the second half, the Kings didn’t fare as well. The third quarter was first mundane. Neither team performed well on the offensive end as the 76ers scored 21 points compared to the Kings 20 points. It was the fourth quarter that doomed the Kings. The Kings defense evaporated as the 76ers scored 32 points in the last quarter. The Kings only managed 20 points which wasn’t enough to make the game close.

De’Aaron Fox led the Kings in defeat scoring 34 points. Joel Embiid led the victorious 76ers by scoring 25 points.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Orlando Magic on Friday at 7 PM in Sacramento.

Sharks Beat Kings 4-3 in Shootout

The San Jose Sharks won 4-3 against the Los Angeles Kings at Staple Center Tuesday. It was their fifth shootout of the season and their third in a row. Sharks goals came from Logan Couture, Timo Meier and Evander Kane, with Couture also scoring the shootout winner. Martin Jones made 24 saves for the win. Kings goals came from Dustin Brown (2) and Anze Kopitar, while Calvin Petersen made 37 saves in the loss. Patrick Marleau passed Jaromir Jagr in Tuesday’s game, on the NHL’s all-time games played list. His 1,734 games are good for third, just behind Mark Messier.

Sharks captain Logan Couture had an outstanding game with a goal, an assist and six shots on goal before the shootout. Only Brent Burns had more shots with seven. After the game, Sharks goalie Martin Jones said: “He just brings it every night. He’s got kind of a workmanlike attitude and, you know, he comes and he brings it every night and that’s something that, you know, I definitely respect about him.”

The Sharks started the scoring early, just 1:20 in. Radim Simek put the puck off to the right of the net and Ryan Donato caught up to it just in time to send a pass backwards to where Timo Meier was arriving at the net. Goalie Calvin Petersen was following the puck to the left and Meier moved it back to the right and into an open net. Assists went to Donato and Simek.

The Sharks’ second goal came in the final minutes of the first. Knyzhov put the puck on Patrick Marleau’s stick by the net and he passed it across the crease to Logan Couture. Petersen could not get back across in time and Couture scored his sixth of the season. Assists went ot Marleau and Knyzhov.

The Sharks took one penalty mid-period but allowed no shots. Instead, Marcus Sorensen got credit for a short-handed effort. The Sharks led the first period in shots 12-4, and the teams were even in face-off wins.

The Sharks started the second period on a power play that carried over from the first period. They got two shots in on that power play but then took three penalties over the course of the period. Timo Meier went for hi-sticking, Mat Nieto went for hooking and Ryan Donato sat for a too many men penalty. Those penalties gave the Kings six shots and a goal.

Seven minutes into the second, Anze Kopitar got a breakaway, skating most of the length of the ice to beat Martin Jones one-on-one. Assists went to Alex Iafallo and Dustin Brown.

Dustin Brown tied the game with a power play goal at 17:54. Adrian Kempe took a shot from the blue line that hit Jones’ glove and dropped to the ice. Before Jones could cover it, Brown lifted it over the goalie’s glove and into the net. Assists went to Kempe and Drew Doughty.

The Kings led in shots during the second period 12-9, and in face-off wins at 53%.

Brown scored his second of the game to give the Kings a lead at 10:45 of the third period. Iafallo fought his way down the ice and around behind the Sharks net and made a quick pass up to Brown just as he came through the face-off circle. His quick shot squeezed between Jones and the post.

Evander Kane tied the game back up at 19:15. With the net empty, Couture took a shot from high in the slot. As the puck bounced around in the blue paint, Kane pushed it over the line through sticks and bodies. Assists went to Couture and Brent Burns.

The shots were 11-10 Sharks in the third. The Sharks won just 44% of their third period face-offs, but in the brief over-time session, they won 80%.

Despite outshooting the Kings 8-1 in overtime, the Sharks could not end it without another shootout. Jones was perfect in the shootout, allowing Logan Couture’s goal to win it for San Jose.

The Sharks will play the Kings in Los Angeles again on Thursday at 7:00 PM PT.

Warriors bounce back beat Spurs 114-91; Curry top scorer with 32 points

By Jerry Feitelberg

Just one day after losing a tough one to the San Antonio Spurs, the Golden State Warriors got their act together to beat the Spurs 114-91.

The Warriors finished the road trip with a 2-2 record. They also snapped a two-game losing streak. The Warriors fell behind early in the first quarter. San Antonio led 19-13 as the Spurs defense was working.

Steph Curry kept the Warriors close with a couple of two-point buckets. Damion Lee drained a three to give the Warriors the lead 26-24. The Spurs came back to tie the game at 26. Curry put the Warriors ahead again to finish the quarter leading 28-26. Curry had 12 points to pace the Warriors.

The Spurs won the second quarter 24-22, and the first half ended with the teams tied at 50. Curry and Damion Lee led the Warrior attack with 16 and 11 points, respectively. DeMar DeRozan had ten for the Spurs.

The Warriors were playing well on defense. They held the Spurs to 38.4% from the floor. The Spurs were 14-for-14 from the free-throw line. The Warriors were nine-for-15 from the charity stripe.

The Warriors head coach Steve Kerr wanted his team to get the offense percolating early in the third quarter. The Warriors complied. They went on a 26-8 run to go ahead 76-58. They had the Spurs on their heels. They led by 20, 83-63.

The Spurs defense kept the Warriors off the board for the last two minutes and 15 seconds of the quarter. The Spurs trailed 86-70 with 12 minutes left in the game.

Kerr had the Warriors second unit on the floor to start the fourth quarter. Kerr was hoping he could keep Curry and Draymond Green on the bench until there were less than five minutes in the game. The second unit came through. Wiggins and Oubre were excellent on the defensive end of the court. The Spurs could not catch up. The Warriors won the second half 64-41 to win by 23 points 114-91.

Game Notes and Stats: The Warriors, with the win, are 13-12 for the year. The Spurs are 14-11.

Curry paced the Warriors with 32 points. Curry was 11-for 20 from the floor, and he was four-for-10 from downtown. The Warriors had five other players in double figures. Eric Paschall had 15, Andrew Wiggins, 14, Juan Toscano-Anderson, who had two points Monday night, knocked down 11, and pulled down eight rebounds. Kelly Oubre, Jr. finished the night with a double-double.

Oubre had 12 points and ten boards. Damion Lee had 11, and Kent Bazemore added ten. The Warriors shot 46.2% from the floor and were 17-for-40 from three-point range. The Warriors outrebounded the Spurs 58-53. The Warriors defense had eight steals, four blocks, and forced 14 turnovers.

The Warriors committed 20 turnovers Monday night. They made coach Kerr very happy as they turned the ball over only ten times Tuesday night.

Rudy Gay led the Spurs with 17 points. Trey Lyles had 15, Patty Mills and Keldon Johnson each had 13, and DeMar DeRozan finished with 12. The Warriors held the Spurs to 37.7% from the floor.

The Warriors return home to face the Orlando Magic Thursday night at the Chase Center. The game will start at 7 pm.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: MLB: De-Juicing the Pelotas

The New York Yankees Luke Voit designated hitter led MLB in home runs with 22 will have to swing a little harder this season as MLB has unwound the balls just a tiny bit to reduce the amount of home runs hit. Here is Voit swinging for a ground out against the Miami Marlins last season on Sun Sep 27, 2020 at Yankee Stadium (AP News photo)

MLB: De-Juicing the Pelotas

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

MLB announced today starting dates for all 30 teams to report to Spring Training. As well as the plan for a full 162 game season, with playoffs as in the past, pre-pandemic 2019. The Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants February 17 to 22, for pitchers and catchers first workouts. April 1 is Opening Day.

Last few years Major League Baseball introduced a bevy of changes. This 2021 season is going to have one of the most interesting changes in recent memory. MLB is going to alter the baseball, and therefore hope to reduce the ratio of home runs.

Recently the KBO, Korean Baseball Organization increased the weight of its baseball less than one twentieth of an ounce and moved the COR about 0.01 in 2019, the result was a 33% decrease in home runs. MLB paid attention to such numbers and hope to accomplish something similar.

After the league saw a record 6,776 homers hit in 2019 (the last 162-game season that was played), the home run rate fell from 6.6% of plate appearances in ’19 to 6.5% during the pandemic-shortened ’20 campaign. It might be the worse kept secret that baseballs have more juice than ever in recent memory, and combined with the new style of hitting the famous “launch angle” home runs are becoming, boring?

What MLB is trying to do this 2021 season is De-Juicing the Pelotas. And what is going to do is basically reduce a 375+ foot fly-ball by about 1 to 2 feet, which will return a reduction of 5% less home runs.

This will also result in an increase in doubles and triples. Another change pertaining to the baseball: MLB wants five (5) more teams to store baseballs in a humidor at their home park. As of today the Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets and Seattle Mariners already store their baseballs in humidors.

Of these five teams, Arizona was the only one showing a decline in home runs once the humidor was installed. To this day, the other five (5) teams that will add the humidor are unknown. Plus, my friends that are National League fans will be happy to learn 2021 there will not be a DH, everything stays the same.

Enjoy it, I am afraid this will be the last year with no DH. But not so quickly for those that like less home runs and more bunting, hit and run and strategy that seems to be absent these days. We are not going to regress to the dead ball era, where from 1900 until the arrival of Babe Ruth in 1919 nobody hit home runs.

Ruth hit an MLB record 29 home runs in 1919 and that was Page One material then. John Franklin “Home Run” Baker led the American League from 1911 to 1914 with a total combined of 42 home runs.

I do not think we are going to go that far back in the time machine in 2019 Houston Note: Juiced Pelotas: In 2019 Astros All-Star pitcher Justin Verlander won his second Cy Young of his career, with a 21-6, 2.58 ERA and gave-up 36 home runs most in his stellar career. This is what he said in 2019 about the juiced balls: “Major League Baseball is turning this game into a joke”.

Stay well and stay tuned.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: The Dead Ball era is back in baseball; No way A’s could keep La Stella; plus more

MLB plans to use a ball with less bounce and less give to reduce the record amount of home runs that have been hit over the last three years (photo from CBS Sports)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 With the record amount of baseball hit for home runs in the last three seasons MLB has decided to get some balance in games that have turned into a home run derby and deaden the ball which brought to mind of what you said of this 2021 season could be called “new dead ball era”

#2 Amaury important is it for Tommy La Stella to join the Giants? Scouting reports say La Stella is one of the toughest outs in baseball. La Stella joined the Giants for three years for $18 million. The Oakland A’s couldn’t hold onto La Stella because of his price tag the A’s won’t keep players after a certain budget threshold.

#3 The Dominicans won the Caribbean Series this week, they went 7-0 behind some fine hitting and pitching. Former San Francisco Giant pitcher The Dominican Dandy Juan Marichal was a product of the Dominican Republic pitching system.

#4 The Chiefs head coach Andy Reid who said his heart bleeds for the injured in the auto accident when Reid’s son Britt and also the Chiefs assistant coach hit a car parked on the side of the road hit and injured a 5 year old who  is suffering life threatening injuries.

#5 The Biden administration asked MLB to delay the season one month until they can get the players vaccinated. The decision could cancel Cactus and Grapefruit League games and the regular season could start straight away first week of April. The Arizona Cactus League has also asked the 15 Cactus League teams to delay for a month as well.

By Ana Kieu

After a bye week, San Jose State men’s basketball traveled to Southern California to face conference foe San Diego State in a two-game series starting Monday night. The Spartans carried a three-game winning streak into this nationally televised matchup, but they had a tall order in the Aztecs.

Despite shooting the ball pretty well in the first half, SJSU ultimately lost by a final score of 85-54 at Viejas Arena. SJSU fell to 5-12, 3-10 Mountain West. Jalen Dalcourt scored 13 points in the Spartans’ loss.

The Spartans’ lineup for game one vs. the Aztecs remained the same, as Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Jalen Dalcourt, Caleb Simmons, and Ralph Agee took the court.

The Spartans won the tip, and the game was underway. SJSU got two early baskets for an early 4-3 lead at 18:32 of the first half. Both teams exchanged leads and ties for several minutes, but the Aztecs’ offense came alive as they built a 10-point lead, 34-24, with 5:08 left in the first half. SDSU maintained a double-digit lead for the final minutes of the first half. Jalen Dalcourt missed a last-second, three-point attempt, and the Spartans trailed 47-29 at the halftime break.

The Aztecs opened the second half with Trey Pulliam’s jumper in the paint, extending their lead to 20 points, 49-29, just 30 seconds in. Turnovers affected the Spartans, who fell even further behind. SDSU continued to pour in the points, extending their lead to 31 points, 71-40, on Jordan Schakel’s three-pointer off of a Spartans turnover at 10:11 of the second half. The Aztecs won by 31 points, 85-54, for their fifth straight win by 27 points or more.

SDSU improved to 13-4, 7-3 Mountain West. Jordan Schakel led the Aztecs with 23 points.

The Spartans and Aztecs meet again Wednesday night at 8:00 pm PT in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network.

Roadrunners take down Barracuda 5-3, sweep two game series in Tucson

San Jose Barracuda didn’t have much luck in Tucson losing both games on the road trip. The Barracuda lost the second game on Mon Feb 8, 2021 at the Tucson Convention Center (sjbarracuda.com image)

by Marko Ukalovic

TUCSON, Ariz—The Tucson Roadrunners scored two goals in the second period en route to a 5-3 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Monday evening at Tucson Convention Center Arena.

San Jose received its first regulation loss after losing in overtime to Tucson the day before and earned one point in the two game series.

The Barracuda (0-1-1) broke the seal late in the first period when John Leonard set up Joachim Blichfeld who rifled home a wrist shot past Roadrunners goaltender Ivan Prosvetov for a 1-0 lead. Blichfeld’s first goal of the season came at the 14:14 mark.

Tucson (2-0-0) came back with the equalizer just under 90 seconds later when some hesitation by ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichulk to play the puck near the trapezoid cost his team. Michael Carcone ended up with the puck and centered a pass out to Jan Jenik who tapped home the puck into an empty net at the 15:19 mark.

A San Jose turnover led to the first lead for Tucson. Kevin Roy raced down the left side and fired a puck on net that Melnichuk stopped but Lane Pederson came crashing in and cleaned up the rebound for his first goal of the season at the 16:44 mark.

Alxander True scored the first of his two goals late in the opening frame. A shot from the point by Brinson Pasichnuk was redirected past Prosvetov by True at the 16:57 mark.

The Roadrunners didn’t waste anytime regaining the lead in the second period. Jenik led and two-on-one break and found Carcone, who snapped home a wrist shot for his first goal of the season at the 1:43 mark.

Tucson gained a two-goal advantage late in the middle frame when they scored its first power play goal of the season at the 17:33 mark. Michael Bunting tipped home a point shot from Pederson.

San Jose cut the lead to a one-goal game with a power play goal of its own. Anti Suomela centered a backhand pass in front of the crease were True was camped out in front of and tipped home the puck past Provetov for his second goal of the evening at the 4:24 mark of the third period.

The Roadrunners closed out the scoring with an insurance goal from Roy. Bunting centered a pass from behind the net and Roy wristed a one-timer past Melnichuk for his first goal of the season at the 17:16 mark.

Prosvetov (2-0) finished with 33 saves on 36 shots to earn the victory. Melnichuk stopped 28 of the 33 shots he faced in the losing effort.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: ESPN Pedro Gómez dead at 58

The late great Pedro Gomez who worked in print at the Arizona Republic, Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News among others and moved to TV at ESPN was a solid beat writer and investigative reporter during the Barry Bonds steroid era, well respected amongst his colleagues and the players. ESPN Pedro Gómez dead at 58

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

On Sunday, while watching the Super bowl, I learned that ESPN sports reporter Pedro Gómez had suddenly passed away at the age of 58 at his Arizona home. Since Pedro Gómez is a very common name in Spanish, I thought that maybe it was not true, that it was somebody else, some other Pedro Gómez, but too soon I found out -unfortunately- it was the Pedro Gómez I knew.

We used to run into each other at Spring Training in Arizona when he worked for the San José Mercury News and other newspapers as well in other cities and here in the Bay Area. Sometimes Pedro would be at a Golden State Warriors game and would join me to do commentary in Spanish over the radio during half time from the Oakland Arena.

I remember one time he took his little boy Rio to a Warrior’s game with his wife, he was holding Rio his son, a toddler, and he adored his kid who is now a man and a baseball player in the Boston Red Sox organization.

The Red Sox issued a statement on social media, saying … “Our hearts go out to the Gómez family, including Pedro Gomez’s son, Rio, a pitcher in our minor league system.” Pedro’s parents were Cuban exiles who arrived to the US in the early 1960’s, about the same I did, when there was a huge Cuban wave of exiles into the US.

We often talked about Cuba, and the time he went there to do a report for ESPN during a baseball exhibition between the Cuban team and the Tampa Bay Rays, we had a very nice conversation regarding his trip to the island and when he reported that his father pledged never to go back to Cuba as long as the Castro regime was in power, which is the sentiment of most Cubans who left the country.

I remember when he asked me If I have been back and if I planned to, which I responded, no, I am just like your parents in that regard, I am not going back as long as the country doesn’t have any freedom and the system doesn’t change.

Pedro was a people’s person affable and always seems to be in a good mood, a true professional always ready to cover any sports story that came his way and he did very well for many years. An excellent journalist.

I joked with him every time I saw him, because of his likeness to a young Camilo Pascual, the ex Cuban pitcher of the Washington Senators and later Minnesota Twins, I would ask him if he was sure he was not related to Pascual and he would laugh and say no, I am not.

During one Spring Training game at the Dodgers training camp in Arizona and inside the Press Box, Alanna Rizzo the Dodgers sports television on-the-field reporter, whose mother was also a Cuban exile, Pedro and yours truly were together and I joked saying that three Cubans is the most a press box could tolerate because more than three and there could be a revolution.

Pedro laughs and responded to me: “yo creo que si” trans- “I think so”. I like to remember him this way, talking baseball with me and about the things we had in common. I am very saddened because we have lost a very good man, and way too young. My sincere condolences to his family.

May he Rest in Peace.

Stay well and stay tuned.
