Ducks harass mistake-prone Cal, win 73-64 in regular season finale

BERKELEY, CA–The most bizarre–and challenging–regular season of Cal Bears basketball has come to a close. Unfortunately, there was nothing far out and strange about Saturday’s loss to Oregon at Haas Pavilion.

In fact, it was more of the same: Cal played hard, and played focused, but we’re simply outclassed by the Ducks in a 74-63 decision.

LJ Figueroa led Oregon with 20 points, 14 rebounds, and five steals as the Ducks scored the game’s first four points and led start to finish, and by as much as 19 points in the second half. Eugene Omoruyi had 21 points, and Chris Duarte, 17 for the Ducks, who have won seven of eight.

“He definitely was the difference in the game,” UO coach Dana Altman said of Figueroa. “His activity defensively, early boards, I thought he was really good. Thought he played his tail off and did some really good things.”

Figueroa did a little of everything, but his work as the point man in the Ducks’ aggressive zone kept Cal’s offense from finding any rhythm as referenced by their paltry total of 14 assists, with eight of those coming from the two guys Cal most needs to score, not facilitate, Matt Bradley and Grant Anticevich. When Figueroa wasn’t disrupting Cal’s attack, his steals led led to a decisive 27-11 edge for Oregon in points off turnovers.

“Those easy baskets they get really impact your defensive numbers,” coach Mark Fox said. “I thought our half court defense finally looked like it did a year ago, but the turnovers, the easy baskets were really the difference in the game.”

Fox admitted that the season began with his coaching staff concerned that their point guard play might be lacking, and as the season turned to conference play, Pac-12 opponents forced the issue on a nightly basis. The Bears saw the majority of their opponents build a wall at the 3-point circle and severely limit Cal’s dribble penetration leading to tough perimeter shots or turnovers. The Ducks, with the smallish, quick lineup may have been the best at it, as they again stopped Cal at the point of attack as they did in an easy win in Eugene in January.

Bradley was made to suffer the most, as Cal’s leading scorer finished with 12 points and four turnovers. Ryan Betley led Cal with 13 points and Andre Kelly added 12. The Bears trailed 34-27 at the break after shooting 39 percent from the floor. Their shooting improved to 52 percent in the second half, but they still fell behind 70-51 before an 8-0 run with three minutes left brought some respectability.

The Bears (8-19, 3-17) last place finish in the Pac-12 comes with an alarming distinction: among Power 5 conference schools (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) only Boston College will finish the season with a lower power rating according to current Real Time RPI rankings. The Eagles, who fired coach Jim Christian mid-season on February 15, currently rank 261 out of 347, while Cal comes in at 246. What’s really disturbing is the company Cal keeps with them finishing far lower down the Division I ladder than the worst Power 5 teams typically finish with North Carolina A&T (11-10 in the MEAC) one spot ahead of Cal, and Manhattan (6-11 in the MAAC) one spot behind.

“It’s been a tough year to have a tough year,” Fox said of a season where his team has been isolated from other students, their campus environment and even themselves (only once did the team dine together in what was a socially distanced meal held outdoors) along with the mounting losses.

Fox is hoping that his team’s spirits will improve with fans and their parents present for the first time this season at the Pac-12 Tournament starting March 10. But even then, the players won’t be able to interact with their families due to COVID-19 protocols, limiting them to friendly waves and blown kisses from the arena floor into the stands.

And while several conference teams, including Oregon, play makeup games to cover for the season’s numerous postponements, the Bears must wait 12 days for the inevitability that they will at some point suffer their 20th and season-ending loss in Las Vegas.

Blues Beat Sharks 7-6 in 13 Goal Barn-Burner

The San Jose Sharks lost 7-6 to the St. Louis Blues Saturday. Blues goals came from Marco Scandella (2), Sammy Blais, Brayden Schenn, Zach Sanford, Mackenzie MacEachern and Ryan O’Reilly. Jordan Binnington made 15 saves in 30:34 of ice time, and Ville Husso made 19 saves for the win. Sharks goals came from Timo Meier (2), Evander Kane (2), Logan Couture, and Kevin Labanc. Devan Dubnyk made 24 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks forward Evander Kane said:

“Any time you score six goals you usually feel you should win the hockey game. I think we gave them a lot, I’d say probably four of those seven goals, we literally gave them the puck. So that was disappointing. And when you make that many mistakes through the course of a game, you know, sometimes scoring six isn’t going to get the job done.”

Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner talked about the four leads the Sharks earned and lost again in the game: “We couldn’t get any momentum going, after we got up, after we got those leads. So.. I mean it’s tough to build momentum when the next shots goes in the net every time.”

Timo Meier scored with the first shot of the game seven seconds in. Meier caught a puck just as it came of the boards and took the shot without hesitation. It deflected off of a defenseman and bounced past Jordan Binnington for Meier’s third of the year. Assists went to Rudolfs Balcers and Dylan Gambrell.

Marco Scandella tied the game at 6:08 with a shot from the middle of the blue line. The puck went past three skaters and into the net on Devan Dubnyk’s glove side.

Evander Kane took the lead back for the Sharks with a power play goal at 10:11. Logan Couture tried to get a shot off from close in but the puck rolled away. Binnington could not corral it and it ended up on Kane’s stick for a tight angle shot. Assists went to Couture and Brent Burns.

At the end of the second, the shots were 12-6 Sharks, with three of those Sharks shots coming on the power play. The face-offs heavily favored the Blues at 63%.

Sammy Blais tied it again 3:34 into the second period. A failed clear by Kevin Labanc ended up on Vince Dunn’s stick for a quick shot from the blue line. Blais collected the puck before it got to the goaltender and swept it around and in with a backhand. Assists went to Dunn and Ryan O’Reilly.

Meier scored again to give the Sharks their third lead of the game at 6:43. With the Sharks on the power play, Meier kept the puck in at the line, carried it down the boards as far as the face-off circle, and shot the puck into the top corner. Kevin Labanc got the assist.

The Blues came right back with another tying goal at 7:28. David Perron had the puck up high in the slot. With a number of skaters to choose from, he found Brayden Schenn coming in late and wide open. Schenn’s shot beat Dubnyk on the glove side.

Kane scored his second of the game at 10:34. Kane got control of the puck in the neutral zone and carried it in with one defenseman to contend with. He took a shot from the top of the face-off circle. the Blues made a goaltending change and put Ville Husso in the game. Binnington made a stop at the Sharks bench and then another to give Dubnyk a shove on his way off the ice.

Zach Sanford tied it up again with 1:44 left in the period. Sanford came up with the puck below the goal line, skated to the net and poked it past Dubnyk. Assists went to Jordan Kyrou and Torey Krug.

The Sharks led in shots again in the second, 20-16, with six shots coming on the power play. They had three power plays in the period and one penalty kill. The Sharks lost ground on already bad numbers in the face-off circle, winning only 21% of them.

The third period saw three goals in the first 3:20. Mackenzie MacEachern gave the Blues their first lead of the game 1:17 into the third period. The Sharks were on the power play when MacEachern and Zach Sanford broke away in a two-on-one for a short handed goal.

Kevin Labanc tied it back up at 2:13. John Leonard made a nice back-hand pass from almost behind the net to set up Labanc for the shot. Assists went to Leonard and Meier.

Ryan O’Reilly scored the eleventh goal of the game at 3:20. Justin Faulk’s hard shot from the top of the circle created a rebound through traffic for O’Reilly to nudge in, reaching through a thicket of bodies.

Logan Couture tied it up again at 6:31. Brent Burns took a shot from the blue line and it deflected off of Couture half way down the slot. It bounced and spun over Husso. Assists went to Burns and Mario Ferraro.

Oskar Sundqvist gathered the puck up behind the net and sent it past two Sharks to Marco Scandella coming in on the other side of the blue paint. Scandella directed it in by the post for the seventh Blues goal at 7:14.

The Sharks pulled their goaltender at the end but could not tie it up again. The Sharks improved somewhat in the face-off circle during the third period, winning 47% which still put the Blues ahead. The Blues had two shots through two power plays and led in shots for the period 9-8.

The Sharks next play on Monday in San Jose, against the Colorado Avalanche at 7:30 PM PT.

Tomas Hertl was out for COVID-19 quarantine, which triggered the rescheduling of Thursday’s game. Erik Karlsson and Radim Simek both returned from injury for Saturday’s game. Karlsson had six shots on goal and Simek had one. The team wore throwback jerseys from the 90s, with the wide grey stripe.

Oregon State completed a rare road sweep on Saturday, as the Beavers upended Stanford 73-62 in men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

The Beavers swept both California and Stanford on the road for the first time since the 2008-09 season. The Cardinal had not lost to OSU and Oregon at home in the same season since 1985-86.

Jarod Lucas netted a career-high 26 points to pace the Beavers (13-11 overall, 9-9 Pac-12). Ethan Thompson had 13 points for OSU, and Warith Alatishe contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Oregon State has won three of its last four games, while Stanford suffered its third straight setback.

Ziaire Williams led the Cardinal (14-11, 10-9) with 14 points off the bench. Lukas Kisunas tied his career best with 12 points, followed by Spencer Jones with 10 points.

Oscar da Silva, Stanford’s leading scorer and rebounder, missed his second straight game due to what the Cardinal has termed “a lower extremity injury.”

Stanford led 34-33 at halftime, and had a 10-point lead until OSU cut its deficit with a 14-5 run in the closing minutes of the half. The Beavers took the lead for good with 14 minutes remaining in the second half, and led 65-54 on a Lucas 3-pointer with 3:11 left.

Oregon State outrebounded the Cardinal 31-29. The Beavers were 16 of 21 at the free throw line, while Stanford was 5 of 7. OSU had a 34-20 edge in points in the paint, and scored 20 points off of the Cardinal’s 16 turnovers.

There were six ties and eight lead changes.

Stanford wraps up its regular season on Wednesday, when the Cardinal visits No. 19 Southern California. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.

A’s environmental report for Jack London Square ballpark released: City of Oakland goal park to be a destination

Oakland A’s team president David Kaval stands by the glass door at the Oakland Coliseum. Kaval  hopes if everything works out the construction of the A’s new park at Howard Terminal at Jack London Square should break ground by 2023 (file photo from the San Francisco Chronicle)

By Jerry Feitelberg and Joe Hawkes (SRS staff writers)

OAKLAND–The City of Oakland released an environmental impact report on Friday that proposes a new state of the art stadium for the Oakland A’s on the waterfront site at Howard Terminal. The new park would included 35,000 seats, 3,000 units of residential condos, housing, apartments, office working space consisting of 1.5 million feet and retail business space of 270,000 feet.

The A’s who have offices at Jack London Square will move the rest of their operations from their offices at the Oakland Coliseum to Jack London Square when the park is ready. The city said that they had envisioned big plans and ideas for the waterfront site and to convert it into a neighborhood for living, shopping, entertainment, and the A’s new park.

This is the A’s second attempt to get a park built in downtown Oakland their first attempt was at the Laney College location located at Lake Merritt but that was shot down after the college’s faculty staff objected to the A’s building a stadium at the site and it would disrupt business and traffic.

The A’s are now seeking the Howard Terminal site this time they have the city behind them on this project not to mention the 2018 legislation bill AB734 which the legislature passed which requires all complaints against the construction of the new park be filed under 270 days.

If the A’s can not move to Howard Terminal it had been suggested that the A’s could stay at the Oakland Coliseum location but the A’s and Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred are all in for moving to Howard Terminal and that the Coliseum location for a new park is not an option.

Kaval said that he was pleased about getting the environmental impact report out and looked at it as a step forward towards getting started on the new Howard Terminal ballpark “We are really excited to get our draft out there, and to advance the project forward so it can be voted on by the City Council this year, which is really our key goal.”

Opponents to the new park have stated that traffic, parking, poor transit access are some of the issues that dockworkers and maritime residents have said they are concerned about. The port is concerned about conducting their business while their are ball games taking place, traffic from retail, restaurants, and housing residents.

Stadium opponents spokesman Mike Jacob vice president of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association said “that Oakland’s working waterfront is no place for a stadium, office and luxury condominium complex at this location.”

Warriors sprint past Hornets 130-121; Curry leads all scorers with 29

The Charlotte Hornets center Bismack Biyombo, center, is defended by Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry left, Kelly Oubre Jr  (in front of Biyombo), and Adrew Wiggins (behind Biyombo) on Fri Feb 26, 2021 at Chase Center in San Francisco

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors met the Charlotte Hornets at Chase Center in San Francisco on Friday night. The Hornets beat the Warriors last Saturday night 102-100 in Charlotte. Draymond Green helped the Hornets when the referees hit him with a double technical.

The Hornets took advantage of Green’s mistake to steal a win. Green apologized to the team for his error. He played his best game of the year Friday night. He was determined to get the Warriors their first three-game winning streak of the season, and he led the team to a win 130-121.

Green had his first triple-double of the year and the 25th of his career. He knocked down 11 points, snared 12 rebounds, and had a career-high 19 assists. The Warriors are 24-1 when Green has a triple-double.

The Warriors were without Stephen Curry, Kevon Looney, and James Wiseman last Saturday in Charlotte. There was no question that the Warriors were a different team. The Warriors played well on both ends of the court. The offense was clicking as they 38 assists on 48 made field goals. They shot 60.8% from the floor. The Warriors’ only negative was the 23 turnovers that led to 30 Charlotte points.

The Warriors won the first quarter 36-28. Kelly Oubre, Jr. put 15 points on the board. The Warriors had 13 assists on the first 14 buckets. Things did not go well to start the second quarter. The Warriors’ second unit was ice cold.

They put just three points on the board in the first seven minutes of the quarter. With five minutes left, Steph Curry and Draymond Green re-entered the game. Charlotte had gone on a 15-3 run to lead 43-39.

The Warriors stormed back with a 15-2 run to lead 54-45. Oubre and Curry kept scoring, and the Warriors finished the first half ahead 66-51. The Warriors scored 27 points in the last five minutes of the second quarter.

The Warriors continued to play well in the third quarter. They outscored the Hornets 37-33 to finish the quarter leading 103-84. The Warriors had a balanced attack as all five starters and two players off the bench were in double figures.

19 point leads with 12 minutes left in the game are difficult to overcome. The Hornets were hoping their three-point shooters would come through for them and that they could climb back into the game.

The second unit played well in the fourth quarter. Wiggins, Oubre, and Eric Paschall made buckets to keep the Warriors ahead 119-101. Charlotte did not quit. They started raining down threes and cut the deficit to ten 119-109. The Warriors didn’t help themselves as they continued to turn the ball over and give the Hornets life. The Warriors were able to hold on, and they won 130-121.

Game Notes and stats: With the win, the Warriors are 19-15 for the season. Charlotte is 15-17.

Curry tied the Warrior team record by making his first three-pointer. It was his 95th consecutive game with a three to tie his teammate Klay Thompson for the record.

Curry finished the night with 26 points, four rebounds, and nine assists. He was two for seven from downtown. Kelly Oubre, Jr. led the Warriors with 27 points. He had six boards, three assists, and connected on three threes. Andrew Wiggins had 17, James Wiseman 16 points in 16 minutes of action, Kevon Looney and Damion Lee ten each.

It was the Warriors’ 14th game with 30 or more assists. They shot 60.8% from the floor. They made 11 threes. On defense, they stole the ball ten times and blocked three Hornet shots. The defense forced 20 Hornet turnovers.

The Hornets’ leading scorer was Malik Monk. Monk, coming off the bench, scored 25. He knocked down five three. Terry Rozier, who scored 36 last Saturday against the Warriors, had 24 on Friday night. He made three threes.

Rookie point guard LaMelo Ball had 22 points, seven boards, and six assists. He, too, made three threes. Gordon Hayward had 12, Miles Bridges ten, P.J Washington had a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds. As a team, the Hornets knocked down 17 threes.

The Warriors meet the Lakers in Los Angeles Sunday night at the Staples Center. The game starts at 5 pm. The team continues on the road to face the Portland Trail Blazers on March 3rd and the Phoenix Suns on March 4th.

Sacramento Kings game wrap: Kings snap nine game losing streak defeat Pistons 110-107

The Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes (40) struggles to get away from being fouled by the Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart, left as the Pistons Dennis Smith behind Barnes watches Fri Feb 26, 2021 at Little Cesar’s Arena in Detroit (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Simply put, the Sacramento Kings are in trouble. Offensively they are struggling and their defense is atrocious. Their Head Coach Luke Walton is having meltdowns on the sidelines out of pure frustration.

Their rookie phenom Tyrese Haliburton is out with a calf injury and to top it all off, they have lost nine games in a row. The last time they won was February 7th a win over the Clippers 113-110. Since then it has been a goose egg. The Kings finally woke up at Little Cesar’s Arena in Detroit with a 110-107 victory to snap their nine game losing streak on Friday night.

The Kings took on the Detroit Pistons another struggling team. The Pistons have the second worst record in the NBA and the Kings are not far behind. Thursday night the Kings allowed 140 points against the NBA’s worst offense the New York Knicks.

Sacramento’s nine game losing streak ties their longest losing streak in 12 years. De’Aaron Fox had a very productive game shooting for 29 points and eight assists. Harrison Barnes had 22 points and Bagley had 19 points.

Very decent numbers but the team still managed to lose the game. Off the bench Tyrese Haliburton had 17 points. The Knicks had some firepower off the bench with Julius Randle who had 21 points. The Kings just could not handle the Knicks.

The Kings three point attempts were better in the Knick game, all fingers point to the defense which is still lacking. The question is can the Kings pull it together to beat the worst team in the Eastern Conference. Can they break this losing streak tonight.

At the half the Kings held a slim lead 55-52. The Kings were setting a nice pace in the first quarter and led 35-25 as time elapsed. They stumbled in the second quarter struggling to maintain that lead and didn’t get a whole lot of help off the bench in the absence of Haliburton. The possibility of losing a tenth game in a row loomed over their heads heading into the second half.

In the third quarter it was a close one with both teams trading the lead. In the final minutes of the third quarter the Pistons started to show up and led by the score of 80-75 after three quarters. Every one of the Sacramento starters had shot double digits but the bench had only contributed two points the entire game.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Kings had tied the game at 91. After trailing by as many as eight points Sacramento was fighting to end their losing streak and getting back to the business of winning.

With 7.4 left in the final quarter and a 110-107 Kings lead Sacramento was finally able to get back in the win column. De’Aaron Fox finished with 27 points and Harrison Barnes had 21. Bagley and Holmes each had 19 points while Buddy Hield had 14.

The King’s bench was a real disappointment with only ten points in the game to the Pistons 34 points off the bench. It wasn’t pretty and it was as close as they come but it was a win and it has been a long time coming.

Sunday night the Kings will take on the Charlotte Hornets in a game that will be anything but easy. If Sacramento can get Haliburton back on the bench and play with the confidence they gained in this win they just might be able to compete with Charlotte. Tipoff is at 7:00 PM PT.

#1 Jeremiah nine straight loses in the row how bad does it have to get for Sacramento (12-20)?

#2 140 points by one of the worst offenses in the NBA the New York Knicks (16-17) was this a game the Kings defense just let down or was it a Knicks team that just keep running up the score and doing the right thing to move the ball?

#3 Immanuel Quickley led New York with 25 points, Alec Burks 24 points, Julius Randall 21 points, and Derrick Rose followed up with 18 points they made it look easier than in other games with previous opponents.

#4 If De’Aaron Fox 29 points and Harrison Barnes 22 points carried the team last night  and no one is helping out on the defense end and everyone is at a lose for the Kings right now?
