#1 The San Jose Barracuda (7-5-1-1) are back in San Jose after wrapping up a five game road trip concluding with a Saturday night win over the Ontario Reign (8-6-1-0).

#2 Interest and support was in not in short supply on Saturday as the Reign-Barracuda game was sold out at Tech CU Arena.

#3 The Barracuda who came away with a 4-1 win got their first two goals in the first period at 6:08 Lucas Carlsson (4) the second goal of the period came at 18:08 by Filip Bystedt (2) to take a 2-0 lead.

#4 The Barracuda got their third goal late in the game at 13:34 by Luca Cagnoni (4) which was the tie break giving the Barracuda a 3-2 lead. At 16:01 the Barracuda got an insurance goal when Colin White (4) and the 4-3 win.

#5 Next up for the Barracuda the San Diego Gulls in San Diego on Wed Nov 19 at Pechanga Arena a 7:00pm PT puck drop. The Gulls are sixth in the Pacific Division at 6-4-3-0 while the Barracuda are in fourth. How do you see this match up?

White’s late game heroics propel Barracuda over Reign in 4-3 comeback win

SAN JOSE — Colin White scored the game winning goal with 3:59 remaining in the third period as the San Jose Barracuda overcame a late deficit for a 4-3 comeback victory over the Ontario Reign on Saturday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose has won four out of its last five games and has points in its last seven games. Ontario has lost two games in a row.

Ethan Cardwell sent a shot in from the left wing toward a sea of traffic in front of the crease. The shot was blocked out front where White pounced on the puck and cleaned up the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

San Jose (6-5-1-1) drew first blood with an even strength goal early in the first period. Kasper Halttunen fed a cross-ice pass to Lucas Carlsson. The second-year defenseman beat Reign goalie Phoenix Copley with a wrist shot top shelf to the near corner for his fourth goal of the season. Pavol Regenda picked up the secondary assist.

The Barracuda doubled its lead late in the opening frame. Quentin Musty centered the puck from behind the net out to Filip Bystedt who rifled home a one-timer into the back of the net for his second goal of the season and first since opening night at the 18:08 mark. Luca Cagnoni picked up his sixth assist of the season with the secondary assist on the play.

Ontario (8-5-1-0) had the game’s first power play opportunity a minute and a half into the game but weren’t able to cash in. They were outshot 15-8 by San Jose in the first 20 minutes.

The Reign cut the lead in half with a power play goal late in the second period. Andre Lee found ‘Cuda killer” Martin Chromiak along the left slot. Chromiak beat Cuda goalie Jakub Skarek with a wrist shot top shelf to the far side for his sixth goal of the season at the 13:14 mark.

Ontario evened the game with its second power play goal of the game early in the third period. Glenn Gawdin sent the puck down low to Lee behind the net. Lee got Skarek to come out from the crease before pinballing the puck off of Skarek for his fourth goal of the season at the 2:58 mark. Lee snapped a 13-game goal less draught.

Lee scored his second power play goal and third overall for the Reign at the 7:03 mark. Gawdin’s shot from the left wing went off the stick off Lee for his fifth goal of the season.

San Jose scored the equalizer moments after a power play opportunity just ended late in the period. Cam Lund centered the puck from behind the net past two Reign defenders out to a wide-open Cagnoni. The second-year defenseman’s one-timer was gloved out of the air by Copley on what was initially a spectacular save. After a lengthy review it was determined that Copley made the save with the puck having crossed the goal line in midair. Cagnoni was credited with his fourth goal of the season, his first at even strength, at the 13:34 mark.

Skarek finished the game stopping 24 of the 27 shots he faced to earn his fifth win of the season. Copley made 25 saves on 29 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-3 on the power play. Ontario went 3-for-5.

San Jose scored the game’s opening goal for the fourth game in a row.

Barracuda split series with Canucks in shootout 4-3 loss

After a long game where the Barracuda had the lead in a lot of the game, they ultimately fell 4-3 in a shootout. Staying on track of last night’s game, San Jose struck first again with Lucas Carlsson scoring in back to back games. Jimmy Huntington and Vincent Iorio also assisted in back to back games, furthering their point streaks. Quentin Musty scored his third PPG of the season to add to the lead. After getting shutout in last night’s game, the Canucks got on the board courtesy of Joe Arntsen, his first of the season.

Abbotsford tied the game at 2 when Ty Mueller scored his second powerplay of the season. San Jose regained their lead courtesy of Colin White, a completely unassisted goal. After Filip Bystedt took a two minute hooking penalty, Abbotsford tied the game with 2 minutes left in the game.

After being down all game, Abbotsford came back in shootout style, Ben Berard being the hero.

After the first period, San Jose heavily outshot Abbotsford 13 to 4. After the second period, Abbotsford started to come back and they outshot San Jose 11 to 10. After the third period, Abbotsford outshot San Jose 16-12. To end the game, San Jose ended up outshooting Abbotsford 36 to 32.

San Jose took advantage of their second powerplay opportunity and went 1-3 while Abbotsford while 2-3. San Jose went to the box four times while Abbotsford also went to the box four times. Coming into tonight’s game, San Jose was second in the division on the powerplay and Abbotsford was second to last on the penalty kill. On the other side, San Jose was last on the penalty kill and Abbotsford was seventh on the powerplay.

Gabriel Carriere was the starting goalie for San Jose, while Aku Koskenvuo was the starting goalie for Abbotsford. Tonight is Koskenvuo’s AHL debut. Carriere recording the loss made 28 saves on 31 shots. Carriere’s record is now 2-4. Koskenvuo who recorded the win, made 33 saves on 36 shots. With Koskenvuo recording his first win, his record is now 1-0.

Skarek blocks Canucks in 7-0 win

San Jose struck first scoring eight minutes into the first period courtesy of Patrick Giles. San Jose got on the board again when Zack Ostapchuk scored in his first game back with the Barracuda after getting sent down from the Sharks. Pavol Regenda registered the main assist, his second of the night.

They did not take the foot off the gas pedal when Lucas Carlsson scored his second of the season, three minutes into the second, to make it now 3-0. To add to the lead, Patrick Giles scored his second of the night, Vincent Iorio, who is on loan from the Sharks, registered the main assist, now 4-0.

Igor Cherynoshov scored his fourth of the season to advance the score to 5-0. 8 minutes into the third, Igor Cherynoshov scored his second of the night, now making it 6-0. To complete the hat trick, Cherynoshov scored his third of the game to absolutely seal the win.

Both goalies faced a good amount of shots. After the first period, Abbotsford outshot San Jose 12 to 11. After the second period, San Jose heavily outshot Abbotsford 10 to 5. After the game, San Jose outshot Abbotsford 36-27.

Both teams had the chance to show their special teams in tonight’s game. San Jose came into the game third on the powerplay with a 26.2% and last on the penalty kill with a 69.0%. For Abbotsford, they came into the game 4th on the powerplay with a 23.7% and 8th on the penalty kill with a 72.5%. San Jose went to the box twice and Abbotsford went 0-2 on the PP. Abbotsford also went to the box twice and San Jose went 1-2 on the powerplay.

Jakub Skarek, who has been good for the Barracuda so far, got the start for San Jose. Skarek making 27 saves on 27 shots, recorded the win. While Ty Young who made 16 saves on 21 shots, recorded the loss.

#1 San Jose Barracuda winger Kasper Halttunen scored twice in the first period as the Barracuda defeated the Calgary Wranglers on Saturday 4-1 at the Saddledome in Calgary.

#2 The win gives the Barracuda their first back to back wins this season and the now have a four game points streak.

#3 The Barracuda did most of the damage in the first period with goals from Egor Afranasyev (1) at 8:00, Halttunen (3) at 15:03, and Halttunen (4) again at 15:44.

#4 Barracuda goaltender Gabriel Carriere saved 26 shots and Carriere was also a huge part in San Jose’s win over Calgary.

#5 The Barracuda continue this road trip Tue Nov 11th at Abbotsford against the Canucks a 7:00pm puck drop. Abbottsford are having their own troubles with a record of 2-8-0-2.

Barracuda dominate Wranglers in 4-1 win, sweep series

The San Jose Barracuda scored three goals in the first period and never looked back in a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Wranglers on Saturday afternoon at Scotiabank Saddledome.

San Jose swept the weekend series over its Pacific Division rival and have won three out of their past four games, which includes a four-game point streak. Calgary has dropped two games in a row after a five-game win streak.

Egor Afanasyev scored his first goal in a Barracuda sweater at the 8:00 mark of the first period. Afanasyev picked up the puck at the redline and danced into the Wranglers zone before wiring a wrist shot to the far side that beat Wranglers goalie Ivan Prosvetov to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.

San Jose doubled its lead with a power play goal late in the opening frame. Pavol Regenda came away with the puck after a scrum from behind the net. Regenda centered the puck to a wide open Kasper Halttunen who buried a one-timer past Prosvetov for his third goal of the season at the 15:03 mark.

41 seconds later Halttunen intercepted a clearing attempt by a Wrangler’s player inside Calgary’s zone. After a give and go with Jake Furlong, Halttunen blasted a slap shot in from the left slot for his second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season.

Calgary finally got on the scoreboard late in the second period with a power play goal. Aydar Suniev sent a pass into the crease where Lucas Ciona beat Cuda goalie Gabriel Carriere with a wrist shot from point-blank range for his first goal of the season at the 17:43 mark.

“I thought we fought hard for the last forty minutes and played the right way,” Wranglers head coach Brett Sutter said.

Colin White iced the game for San Jose with an empty net goal, his second of the season, with 1:37 remaining in the game.

Carriere finished the gamer stopping 26 of the 27 saves he faced to earn his second win of the season. Prosvetov made 27 saves on 30 shots in the losing effort.

“You can’t take any games for granted, you’ve got to go out there and play your best,” Suniev said.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-3 on the power play. Calgary went 1-for-2.

Barracuda start roadtrip with a 4-3 win against Wranglers

The Calgary Wranglers (6-3-2-0) got started early scoring a minute and 15 seconds into the game, taking advantage of their power-play opportunity. Aydar Suniev netted his second PPG of the season and AHL career. 8 minutes later, the San Jose Barracuda (4-5-1-0) took advantage of their powerplay opportunity to tie the game.

After scoring a power play goal in the last game, Igor Cherynoshov scored his second powerplay goal of the season. San Jose started the second period and 46 seconds in, Luca Cagnoni scored his 3rd powerplay goal of the season.

Calgary tied the game in the second period when another powerplay goal was scored by Dryden Hunt, his 1st of the season. The Barracuda went on a scoring spree with Cam Lund scoring his first AHL goal and Igor Chernyshov scoring his second of the game to make the score 4-2. After this, Prosvetov’s night was done and Owen Say came into the game. Martin Frk scored a late goal with 2 minutes left in the third but it wasn’t enough.

San Jose took an early penalty that ended up not helping them. Calgary took advantage and took an early 1-0 lead a minute into the first period. San Jose took advantage of their powerplay units and went 2/5 on the powerplay while Calgary also went 2/5. Calgary came into tonight’s game last on the powerplay with a 14.7%. After a two minute roughing penalty was called, San Jose took advantage and scored on the powerplay. Coming into tonight’s game, San Jose was 4th place with a 25.6%.

After Carriere recorded the loss against the Reign on Wednesday, Jakub Skarek was looking to get his third win of the season. Making 25 saves on 28 shots, he recorded the win while Ivan Prosvetov recorded the loss. Prosvetov made 15 saves on 19 shots but it wasn’t enough because Owen Say came into the game. Say came in and made 8 saves on 8 shots.

The Barracuda will be back in action Saturday November 8th against this same Calgary Wranglers team at 12pm. With a day break, they will be looking to win/split the series before heading to Abbotsford on the 11th to take on the Abbotsford Canucks. Gabriel Carriere and Owen Say are the goalies expected to start in Saturday’s game.

Barracuda fall to Reign 2-1 in OT fight

The Ontario Reign and the San Jose Barracuda have faced each other twice this season already. The Ontario Reign visited San Jose this past weekend Oct 31-Nov 1 where they split the series. The Barracuda lost a close 2-1 overtime match with the Reign on Wednesday night at the Toyota Center in Ontario.

After a scoreless first period, Akil Thomas put his team on the board first. Taking advantage of their powerplay, Ignor Cherynoshov netted his first powerplay goal of the season. A minute into overtime, Ontario took the win with Taylor Ward being the hero.

Although there was a scoreless first period, San Jose outshot Ontario 8 -3, with most shots going their way. San Jose then outshot Ontario again after the second period 10-9. San Jose ended the game outshooting Ontario 27-20 but ultimately ended up with the loss.

The Barracuda were the first to the box when Cole Clayton took a two minute high-sticking penalty 59 seconds into the second period. San Jose ended up taking three penalties while Ontario took one penalty. Coming into tonight’s game, San Jose was last on the PK and Ontario was sixth. Since Ontario took one penalty, San Jose was able to showcase their powerplay and did. San Jose was fifth on the powerplay with a 22% while Ontario was eighth with a 17.9%.

Both goalies saw the ice and faced off last on San Jose’s ice. Gabriel Carriere who’s last game was a loss, recorded 32 saves on 34 shots. Erik Portillo who’s last game was against this Barracuda team, made 36 of 37 shots in his 6-1 win. In Tuesday night’s game, Carriere recorded the loss making 18 saves on 20 shots while Portillo recorded the win making 26 saves on 27 shots.

The Barracuda will be back in action on Thursday November 6th where they will visit Scotiabank Saddledome to take on the Calgary Wranglers. The last time these two teams faced off was on March 31st in Calgary when San Jose took the 4-1 win. Ethan Cardwell, Jack Thompson, Danil Guschin, and Nathan Todd all scored in the win. Jack Thompson is the only one left from that group that is still on the team.

#1 Marko the San Jose Barracuda won a key game against the Ontario Reign on Saturday night 4-2. Scoring twice in each of the first and third periods at Tech CU.

#2 In first period action the Barracuda got scoring from Jack Thompson for his first goal of the season and Zack Ostapachuk for his second of the season. For a 2-0 lead.

#3 The Reign got on the scoreboard when Martin Chromiak scored at 10:23 in the second period. Chromiak picked up his third goal of the season cutting San Jose’s lead 2-1.

#4 The Barracuda in the third period picked up a goal from Quentin Musty at 7:34, the Reign’s Taylor Ward scored his fifth goal of the season at 16:07 making it 3-2. The Barracuda’s Pavol Regenda got the insurance goal for San Jose scoring at 17:10 and the Barracuda came away with a 4-2 win.

#5 The Barracuda’s next game is in Ontario against these very same Reign on Tue Nov 4 for a 7:00pm face off at the Toyota Center in Ontario. How do you see this match up?

Barracuda shut out by Gulls 3-0

Coming off of a 3-2 win against the Milwaukee Admirals, splitting the previous series. Wednesday night, they were looking to extend that win streak.

San Diego was the first on the board, taking advantage of being on the powerplay. Yegor Sidorov scored his second power-play goal of the season. Coming into Wednesday night’s game, San Diego was last in place on the powerplay, with a 13.6%.

On the other side, San Jose was in last place with a 60.9%. San Diego struck again in the second period when Tim Washe scored his second goal of the season, his second point of the night. With two minutes left, San Diego sealed the win with an empty net goal, Tim Washe scored his second of the game.

The shots on goals were pretty equal throughout the night. After the first period, San Diego outshot San Jose 17 to 9. After the second period, San Jose outshot San Diego 12 to 11. After the third period, San Diego ended up outhooting San Jose 7 to 6. In the end, San Diego ultimately outshot San Jose 35 to 27.

Both teams went to the penalty box an equal amount of times. When Quentin Musty was called for a two minute penalty, that’s when the Gulls took advantage and scored first to take their first lead of the game. San Jose was zero and five on the powerplay while San Diego was one for four.

For San Jose, Gabriel Carriere got the start, looking for his first win of the season. For San Diego, Ville Husso got the start, coming into Wednesday night’s game with a 1-3 record. Carriere with 27 saves on 19 shots recorded his 3rd loss of the season. Husso with 24 saves on 24 shots recorded his second win and shutout of the season.

The Barracuda will be back in action on Friday, October 31st against the Ontario Reign. The last time these two teams faced off was in the Calder Cup playoffs when San Jose kicked Ontario out of the playoffs.
