Barracuda shutout Firebirds 1-0, Bystedt overtime winner

There was a lack of goals throughout the first and second periods but there wasn’t a lack of effort. Both teams in Wednesday night’s midweek matchup were playing their absolute best games of the season. For the overtime winner 53 seconds in, Filip Bystedt scored his 11th goal of the season as the San Jose Barracuda edged the Coachella Valley Firebirds 1-0.

Although the scoring appeared even and low, the shots on goals were split between the first and second periods but San Jose outshot Coachella Valley in the third period. In the first period, San Jose outshot Coachella Valley 12 to 7. In the second period, Coachella Valley outshot San Jose 11 to 5. To end the game, San Jose outshot Coachella Valley 10 to 6.

Tempers were flared in Wednesday night’s game, especially throughout the second period. During the first period, each team took two penalties each. In the second period, Coachella took six penalties and San Jose took five.

Seven of the eleven penalties were for fighting or roughing. Coachella was given a four minute power-play opportunity when Lucas Vanroboys took a 4 minute double minor for attempting to head butt a Firebird. Ultimately, both San Jose and Coachella Valley equally took nine penalties.

The penalty kills were on display Wednesday night with neither team being able to capitalize on the many penalties. Previous to Wednesday night’s game, San Jose was in fifth place on the PK with an 82.2%. Coachella Valley was in 1st, and it showed in Wednesday night’s game, going nine for nine on the penalty kill.

Wednesday night’s game was nothing but a goalie duel starting goalie for San Jose was Yaroslav Askarov, his second game in a row after his injury. Askarov faced 24 shots and made 24 saves, his second shutout against the FireBirds this season. For Coachella Valley, starting goalie was Nikke Kokko. Kokko recorded the loss, making 27 saves on 28 shots.

#1 Marko, the San Jose Barracuda never got on track as they were scrambling and trying to figure out the Colorado Eagles defense Saturday in Colorado the lack off offense hurt them as they lost by two goals 3-1 in their last game.

#2 The Eagles Oskar Olausson scored his 11th goal of the season to get the Eagles started with a 1-0 lead. He got assist from TJ Tynan and Jack Ahcan at 19:50.

#3 In the second period Scott Sabourin scored his eighth goal of the season 23 seconds into the period and it would turn out to be San Jose’s only goal of the contest making it a 1-1.

#4 The Eagles got their final two goals of the game at 4:53 in the second period Jayson Megna picked up his 18th goal of the season taking a 2-1 lead. In the third period Tye Falhaber scored his 21st goal at 19:14. and the Eagles came away with a 3-1 win. It was the Barracuda’s 25th loss of the season making them 33-25-3-2.

#5 Next up for San Jose they make the trip to face the Coachella Firebirds on Wednesday with a 7:00pm face off at Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms. The Firebirds are fourth in the Pacific at 36-24-2-5. The Firebirds are playing .500 hockey having lost five of their last ten games. Marko how do you see this match up.

Barracuda fall 3-1 to Eagles in Askarov’s return

The Colorado Eagles knocked off the San Jose Barracuda 3-1 in Colorado on Saturday night. The Eagles got the first lead of the game with ten seconds left of the first period. Oskar Olausson scored his 11th of the season. With the secondary assist, Jack Ahcan extended his point streak to two games. Colorado took the lone penalty when Mark Sedan took a two-minute cross-checking penalty.

23 seconds into the second period, San Jose tied the game, courtesy of Scott Sabourin. Scoring in back to back games, Sabourin extended his point streak to two games. Recording the lone assist, Lucas Vanroboys made it back to back games, assisting on a Sabourin goal. After good puck movement, Colorado regained their lead. Jayson Megna, older brother of former Shark Jaycob Megna scored his 18th of the season.

San Jose was the better team at staying out of the box. Only committing four penalties while Colorado committed five, most of the Barracuda’s penalties came from the fight that occured in the second period. Just like last night, two players on each team dropped the gloves. Saturday night, it was Walker Duehr and Braden Hache of the Barracuda, and Nikita Prishchepov of the Colorado, each dropped the gloves.

The Eagles sealed the win, splitting the series. Tye Felhaber scored an empty net goal to secure the win and avoid the sweep against San Jose. Matthew Phillips recording the primary assist, recorded two assists on the night.

Colorado dominated nearly every aspect of the game but most notably, they outshot the Barracuda consistently all game. The shots were 10-8 after the first period, 16-7 after the second period, and 6-7 after the third period.

In his first game back since February, Yaroslav Akarov recorded his 7th loss of the season. In his 7th loss, Askarov made 29 saves on 31 shots. For Colorado, Kevin Mandolese got the start. Mandolese recorded the win, making 21 saves on 22 shots.

Barracuda take down first place Eagles 6-3

After 17 games missed due to injury, San Jose Barracuda Filip Bystedt returned to the lineup in Friday night’s game against Colorado Eagles. Previous to his injury, Bystedt was riding a four-game point streak. In tonight’s game, Bystedt registered two points. Scoring one goal and recording one assist. The Barracuda picked up the 6-3 win at Blue FCU Arena in Loveland.

In his first game back, Filip Bystedt opened up the scoring to give San Jose their first lead of the game. Colorado quickly tied the game 30 seconds later. Jayson Megna, the older brother of former Shark Jason Megna, scored his 17th of the season.

The second period was a scoring frenzy. Colorado took their first lead of the game at 9:41, Cooper Gay scored his first AHL goal of the season. San Jose tied the game four minutes later, Scott Sabourin scored his seventh of the season. Colorado regained their lead when Jere Innala scored his 16th goal of the season. San Jose tied the game up once again when Patrick Giles scored his second goal in back to back games.

Taking advantage of Colorado’s fifth penalty taken, Patrick Giles scored his second of the night. With the primary assist, Filip Bystedt recorded his second point in his first game back from injury. San Jose extended their lead to 5-3 three minutes later when Lucas Vanroboys scored his 11th of the season. Sabourin registering the secondary assist, recorded his second point of the night.

Anthony Vincent sealed the win, scoring an empty net goal to improve the score to 6-3.

Keeping the trend going, San Jose was the better team at staying out of the box. San Jose took four penalties while Colorado took five. Majority of the penalties taken were in the second period when each team had two guys drop the gloves. For San Jose, Patrick Giles and Braden Hache. For Colorado, Chase Bradley and Ivan Ivan. San Jose was the only team to captialize, scoring one power-play goal.

Aaron Dell was tonight’s starting goalie, with Yaroslav Askarov backing him up. Dell recorded 15 saves on 18 shots. Dell’s record now moves to 2-3. For Colorado, Trent Miner was the starting goalie. Miner made 22 saves on 27 shots. Miner’s record now moves to 19-8.

Barracuda swept by Canucks, fall to 5th place

SAN JOSE- 11 seconds in, tempers were flared after Braden Hache from San Jose and Jett Woo from Abbotsford dropped the mitts, both taking five minute fighting penalties.

30 seconds later on four on four action, Abbotsford got out to another early start. Sammy Blais scored his 13th of the season, recording his first point of the night.

Abbotsford extended their lead three times in the first, to make it four-zero. The first came off of a short handed goal. Chase Wouters, the captain, scored his ninth of the season. The second, came as a result of traffic in front of the net. Nate Smith netted his seventh of the season. The third, came on a goal courtesy of Jujhar Khaira. Khaira now has goals in back to back games.

Starting the second on a power-play, San Jose took advantage and scored. Pavol Regenda scored his sixth power-play goal of the season. After being a healthy scratch in last night’s game, Thompson picked up the secondary assist. This would end up being San Jose’s only goal throughout the whole game.

Abbotsford nearly dominated the whole game, outshooting San Jose in two of the three periods. San Jose also changed the amount of penalties they took. While Abbotsford took seven penalties, San Jose only took two. Four of the seven penalties the Canucks took, were in the second period.

Sealing the 5-1 win, Nate Smith scored his eighth of the season. Sammy Blais registered the secondary assist.

For Abbotsford, Sammy Blais recorded three points and Nate Smith recorded two points. For San Jose, with Rem Pitlick recording today’s primary assist, he’s extended his point streak to two.

Ty Young was Saturday’s winning goalie. Young made 14 saves on 15 shots. His record now improves to 8-3. Gabriel Carriere got the start for the second game in a row. After a little over halfway, Carriere was pulled again and Dell was put in. Before getting pulled, Carriere recorded seven saves on 11 shots. Dell recorded 17 saves on 18 shots.

Barracuda fall 5-1 to Abbotsford Canucks, extend losing streak to two

SAN JOSE- Riding a seven game winning streak, Abbotsford Canucks was looking to keep the win streak alive and extend it to eight. Most recently, they defeated the Manitoba Moose 5-4. San Jose was coming off of a 4-3 overtime loss to the San Diego Gulls.

On Friday night the Canucks were able to extend their winning streak to eight games with a 5-1 win over the San Jose Barracuda at Tech CU Arena in San Jose.

Abbotsford got out to an early lead, scoring three times in the first period. Three different Canucks registered goals; Cooper Walker, Phillip Di Giuseppe, and Chase Wouters, each scored a goal in the first.

They extended their lead to four-nothing, five minutes into the second. Jujhar Khaira registered his fifth goal of the season. To extend their lead even further, Phillip Di Giuseppe scored his second of the night to move the score to 5-0. That was on Abbotsford’s fourth power-play opportunity. Di Giuseppe’s first power-play goal of the season.

To avoid the shutout, Joey Keane netted his second of the season. Guschin registering the main assist, he now extended his point streak to nine games.

Although the Barracuda got outscored five to one, the shots were close all game. The only time the Barracuda were in full control of the game was in the second period where San Jose out-shot Abbotsford 17 to 14. Other than that, Abbotsford outshot San Jose in the first 13 to 8, and in the third each team took 13 shots.

The difference in Friday night’s two teams were the power-play opportunities. Abbotsford had six power-play chances while San Jose only had two. Many of San Jose’s penalties came from fights. In the third period, there were six fighting penalties. Both Braden Hache and Lucas Vanroboys from the Barracuda were given game misconducts at 16:33 of the third period.

Nikita Tolopilo was the winning goalie, nearly recording a perfect game, making 38 saves on 39 shots. Gabriel Carriere got the start for the third game in a row. Carriere made seven saves on ten shots until getting pulled and Dell came in. Dell gave up one goal, making 29 saves on 31 shots.

Barracuda fall 4-3 in the final matchup with Gulls

In this last matchup between the San Jose Barracuda and San Diego Gulls this season, the Barracuda fell short falling 4-3 on Wednesday night.

San Jose kept their scoring spree up, scoring six minutes into the game on a goal courtesy of Lucas Vanroboys. San Diego’s Roland McKeown tied the game, ten minutes later.

Ethan Cardwell gave San Jose their lead back, three minutes into the second period.

San Diego took the lead going into the third, scoring twice in the second period. Ryan Carpenter with his 19th goal, Jan Mysak with his 17th goal of the season.

To send the game into overtime, Pavol Regenda scored his fifth power-play goal of the season. With the secondary assist, Poturalski recorded two assists on the night. This power-play goal set a team record of power-play goals in tenth consecutive games.

2:29 into the overtime period, Carsen Twarynski scored his fifth goal of the season.

Gabriel Carriere got the start, his second in a row. Making 22 saves on 25 shots, Carriere recorded his 9-6 win/loss of the season.

Each team had equal amounts of power-play time. San Jose had four power-play opportunities while San Diego also had four. San Jose was the only one that could capitalize on the penalties.

The Barracuda will be back in action Friday night, hosting the Abbotsford Canucks for the last matchup between the two teams. In the Pacific Division, San Jose and Abbotsford are in a three way tie for third with Coachella. This weekend will be important for a San Jose play-off chasing team.

San Jose Barracuda podcast Marko Ukalovic:

#1 The San Jose Barracuda scored three special team goals in a 6-3 route of the Bakersfield Condors on Sunday afternoon at Tech CU Arena.

#2 San Jose swept the weekend home-and-home series and has won three games in a row. Bakersfield has lost three games in a row. 

#3 The Barracuda moved up to fifth place in the Pacific Division one point ahead of the Calgary Wranglers with 72 points.

#4 Marko, the Barracuda got defense and offense in this one on Sunday. On the defensive side they held the Condors to only one goal in the first period and allowed two in the second and on offense the Barracuda scored twice in the second period and three times in the third period to put it away with a three goal win.

#5 The Barracuda travel to San Diego for a Wednesday night game and a 7:00pm PDT face off. The Gulls are in last in the Pacific Division and have lost five of their last ten games. The Barracuda are sixth and have won six of their last ten games. Set this one up for us.

Barracuda win 8-6, Poturalski hat trick

San Jose Barracuda vs Bakersfield Condors on Saturday March 22nd at Dignity Health Arena (via Madison Montez)

BAKERSFIELD–After a failure to make the glove save by Aaron Dell, the Condors struck first, three minutes in. Connor Carrick scored his second of the season as the San Jose Barracuda defeated the Condors 8-6 at Dignity Health Arena.

The start of the first period was all Bakersfield, scoring three goals in the span of four minutes. Bakersfield is currently in eighth place in the standings of the Pacific Division, chasing a playoff spot.

San Jose cut into that lead when Braden Hache scored his second of the season and Walker Duehr scored his 14th of the season. Donavan Houle and Thomas Bordeleau registered the assists on both goals, recording two points in the first period alone.

San Jose didn’t back down without a fight. Guschin tied the game up in the second period scoring two goals in the span of 27 seconds. 52 seconds later, Ethan Cardwell gave San Jose their first lead of the game.

Two power-play goals and one regular goal by Andrew Poturalski in the third, gave San Jose the win.

Guschin was the standout player for the Barracuda, registering four points. two goals and two assists.

Aaron Dell was the starting goalie, making 33 saves on 39 shots. Carriere will get the start tomorrow.

Bakersfield is now on a one game winning streak. San Jose is now on a two game winning streak.

Barracuda shutout Gulls 4-0 in midweek morning matchup

SAN JOSE–The Barracuda took on the San Diego Gulls for a morning midweek matchup. The last time these two teams faced off was on Wednesday March 5th where the Barracuda fell in overtime. Former Barracuda captain Ryan Carpenter scored the overtime winner.

This time on Wed Mar 19th the Barracuda shutout the Gulls at Tech CU 4-0.

Tuesday it was announced that the second leading defenseman Luca Cagnoni was recalled to the Sharks. In the AHL this season, Cagnoni has 13 goals and 34 assists, adding up to 47 total points.

San Jose got started early, scoring at 9:38 of the first. Lucas Vanroboys scored his ninth of the season, coming off of a rebound shot. Danil Guschin and Braden Hache registered the assists.

Going 4 for 7 on the powerplay on Sunday against Tucson, San Jose kept the power-play momentum going. On their first opportunity of the game, Danil Guschin scored his 4th power-play goal of the season. Pavol Regenda and Rem Pitlick registered the assists.

San Jose further extended their lead at 14:23 of the second. Ethan Frisch scored his 3th goal of the season. Ethan Cardwell and Colin White registered the assist.

With 56 seconds left, Colin White scored an empty net goal to seal the win. Ethan Cardwell registered the lone assist. White and Cardwell both with their second point.
