Barracuda lose 6-2 to Tucson in annual Teddy Bear toss matchup

SAN JOSE–San Jose opened up the scoring in their 6-2 loss on Saturday night. Jack Thompson made it rain teddy bears when he scored his second goal of the season to give San Jose their first lead of the game. Five minutes later, Tucson evened the score at 1-1 with Ty Tulio scoring his first goal of the season.

Tucson took their first lead of the game when Cameron Hebig scored his ninth goal of the season. Ty Tulio went on hattrick watch when he scored his second of the game to extend Tucson’s lead. San Jose cut into that lead when Cam Lund scored his second of the season. Tucson extended their lead once more to make the score 4-2 when Ben McCartney scored his second powerplay goal of the season.

Tucson took their lead even further and made the score 5-2 when Cameron Hebig scored his second of the night.

The score being as close as it was, the shots were pretty even too. After the first period, San Jose outshot Tucson 11-6. After the second period, Tucson outshot San Jose 12-8. To end the game, San Jose ultimately outshot Tucson 41-22.

Both teams were good at staying out of the box, San Jose going to the box twice while Tucson went to the box four times. Coming into Saturday night’s game, San Jose was third on the powerplay while Tucson was seventh. Shorthanded, San Jose was last and Tucson was fourth.

Gabriel Carriere and Matthew Villalta were the goalies going head to head in Saturday night’s game. Carriere, who made 16 saves on 21 shots, recorded the loss. His record now moves to/5-5-2-1. Villalta, who made 37 saves on 39 shots recorded the win. His record now moves to 7-4-1-1.

Barracuda split series with Eagles in 4-3 win

Colorado opened up the scoring in back to back games with Jake Wise scoring his second goal of the season. They extended their lead to 2-0 when Luke Toporowksi scored his first goal this season. San Jose cut into that lead to make it 2-1 when Oliver Wahlstrom took advantage of a powerplay scoring his fifth powerplay goal of the season.

The Barracuda tied the game at two with Igor Chernysov scoring his 10th of the season. They took their first lead of the game when Quentin Musty scored his fourth powerplay goal of the season. Musty went on hat trick watch at 9:28 of the third, scoring his second goal of the night, extending their lead to 4-2. Colorado cut into that lead but it wasn’t enough, courtesy of Tristen Nielsen.

Although losing, Colorado had the upper hand for most of the game. They outshot San Jose 11 to 8 in the first period and 12 to 6 in the third period. San Jose outshot Colorado 17 to 8 in the second period. Ultimately, both teams ended up shooting 31 shots evenly.

Both teams had a chance to show their special teams in last night’s game but San Jose was the only team to capitalize and take advantage. San Jose went 3 for 6 while Colorado went 0 for 2. Quinten Musty scored two for San Jose while Igor Chernysov scored the other. After tonight’s game, San Jose is now first on the powerplay and second to last on the penalty kill.

Jakub Skarkev, who recorded the win, made 28 saves on 31 shots, allowing three goals. His record now moves to 7-2-0-1. Isak Posch, who recorded the loss, made 27 saves on 31 shots, allowing four goals. His record now moves to 8-3-1-2.

Barracuda fall to Eagles 4-2; SJ drops first of two game set

Colorado was the first on the board, scoring five minutes into the game, ultimately winning 4-2. Taylor Makar, who is Avalanche’s Cale Makar, scored his second of the season. Going on hattrick watch, Makar scored his second of the game and third of the season. San Jose cut into Colorado’s lead, Lucas Carlsson scoring his first powerplay goal of the season.

Colorado extended their lead once again, Tye Felhaber scoring his third shorthanded goal this season. San Jose cut into the lead again, Lucas Carlsson going on hattrick watch scoring his second powerplay goal of the game. Colorado extended their lead to 4-2 when Jack Ahcan scored his second of the season.

The shot differential was pretty close in Friday night’s game. After the first period, Colorado barely out San Jose 9-10. After the second period, Colorado outshot San Jose 7 to 6. After the final buzzer, Colorado outshot San Jose 9 to 8.

Both teams had a chance to show both of their special teams. San Jose went to the box six times while Colorado went eight times. San Jose took advantage while Colorado did not. San Jose went 2 for 6 on the powerplay while Colorado went 0 for 6. Coming into tonight’s game, San Jose was fourth on the powerplay and last on the penalty kill. Colorado was first on the powerplay and first on the penalty kill, clearly having a strong special teams system.

For San Jose, Gabriel Carriere got the start after getting the 3-0 shutout in Wednesday’s game. For Colorado, Trent Miner got the start after his 3-1 loss against Tucson. Carriere who made 22 saves on 26 shots, recorded the loss. Miner who made 21 saves on 23 shots recorded the win.

Barracuda shutout Wranglers 3-0, Carriere’s first of the season

SAN JOSE–San Jose shutout Calgary 3-0 in this week’s mid-week matchup at Tech CU. San Jose was the first on the board, courtesy of Igor Chernysov scoring his ninth of the year. With this goal, Chernysov is now tied for first among rookies in points, 16. Cole Clayton added to the lead three minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0. On their second powerplay opportunity, Filip Bystedt knocked in a flying puck to score his first powerplay goal of the season to extend their lead even further to 3-0.

Both teams shot fairly well in tonight’s game, San Jose outshot Calgary 14-5 after the first period. After the second period, San Jose outshot Calgary 13-7. . To end the game, San Jose outshot Calgary 33-22. For a lot of the game, the puck was in Calgary’s defensive zone, hence the amount of shots taken. For San Jose, Lucas Carlsson took the most shots and for Calgary, it was between Rory Kerins and Sam Morton.

Coming into tonight’s game, San Jose was third on the powerplay and last on the penalty kill. For Calgary, they came into tonight’s game 8th on both the powerplay and penalty kill. Both teams had a chance to show what they were capable of. San Jose went 1 for 5 on the powerplay while Calgary went 0 for 3. Filip Bystedt scored his first powerplay goal of the season.

For San Jose, Gabriel Carriere got the start. Carriere recorded the win making 22 saves on 22 shots. His record now moves to 5-3-2. For Calgary, Ivan Prosvetov got the start. Prosvetov recorded the loss making 30 saves on 33 shots. His record now moves to 7-5-1-1.

Barracuda win 4-3 in overtime fashion

Similar to San Jose’s last game, special teams played an important part in San Jose’s 4-3 win. Abbotsford got on the board first taking advantage of their first powerplay opportunity. Jonathan Lekkerimaki scored his first powerplay goal of the season to give Abbotsford the 1-0 lead.

Two minutes into the second period, Oliver Wahlstrom scored his third powerplay goal of the season to tie the game at 1. Seven minutes later, he scored another powerplay goal to give San Jose their first lead of the game.

Igor Chernyshov added to that lead scoring a shorthanded goal 6 minutes into the third period after Jack Thompson took a two minute penalty for tripping. Vilmer Alriksson cut the lead to 3-2 scoring his first powerplay goal of the season. Kirill Kudrayavtsev tied the game at 3-3 scoring his first goal of the season sending the game into overtime.

A minute and 11 seconds into OT, Filip Bystedt became the hero scoring his third goal of the season to secure the 4-3 win for San Jose.

There were lots of players in the box in last night’s game which gave many opportunities to show off their special teams. Abbotsford had four opportunities, taking advantage of two while San Jose had five opportunities, taking advantage of two.

Last night’s goalie matchup was Gabriel Carriere versus Nikita Tolopito. Carriere who recorded the win, making 17 saves on 20 shots, now has a record of 4-3-2-0. Tolopito who recorded the loss, making 31 saves on 35 shots, now has a record of 1-3-1-0.

Barracuda win 5-3 against Canucks

Special teams were put on full display on Friday night with the first goal of the game being a powerplay goal in San Jose’s 5-3 win. San Jose was the first to get on the board with Oliver Wahlstrom scoring his second powerplay goal of the season. Three minutes later, scored his first powerplay goal and the Barracuda were up 2-0.

A minute into the second period, Abbotsford’s Ben Berard cut the San Jose lead in half and scored to put his team on the board with his third powerplay goal of the season. Ty Mueller tied the game at 2-2 with his 3rd powerplay goal of the season. Abbotsford got their first lead of the game when Chase Wouters scored his first of the season at 8:25 into the third period.

Pavol Regenda tied the game at 3-3 when he scored his second goal of the season, 6:18 into the third period. Igor Cherynoshov gave San Jose their lead back when he scored his 7th goal of the season. Pavol Regenda put the cherry on top scoring an empty net for his second goal of the night, securing the 5-3 win.

Both teams had a shot at showing off their special teams in the game and both teams took advantage. Abbotsford fully took advantage going 2-2 while San Jose went 2-3. Coming into the game, Abbotsford was third in the AHL on the powerplay while San Jose was second, meaning both teams have a pretty strong powerplay. On the other side, Abbotsford was second to last on the PK and San Jose was last, meaning both team’s penalty kills aren’t their strong sides.

For San Jose, Jakub Skarek got the start. Recording the win making 19 saves on 22 shots, his record now moves to 6-2-1. For Abbotsford, Nikita Tolopilo got the start. Recording the loss making 28 saves on 32 shots, his record now moves to 1-3-0.

Barracuda’s Musty scores overtime winner in 5-4 win

The San Jose Barracuda edged the San Diego Gulls 5-4 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. San Diego struck first, Matthew Phillips made a knee pass to Stian Solberg, Solberg scores his first of the season. After a backdoor pass by Ethan Cardwell, Colin White tied the game at 1-1 a piece for his fifth goal of the season.

San Jose won a stick battle going into San Diego’s zone and Oliver Wahlstrom gave San Jose their first lead of the game. Former Barracuda Justin Bailey tied the game for San Jose with a quick shot after the pass from Sasha Pastujov.

After puck movement and a loose puck, Ethan Cardwell scored to give San Jose their lead back. A minute later, Quentin Musty extended the Barracuda’s lead to two.

Sasha Pastujov made it a one goal game 39 seconds into the third period, scoring his second powerplay goal of the season. With six minutes left in the game, San Diego tied the game at four after putting pressure in San Jose’s zone. Judd Caulfield deflected the shot to score his seventh goal of the season.

Two minutes into overtime, Quentin Musty was the hero scoring his second of the night to secure the Barracuda 5-4 win.

The score being as close as it was, the shots on goals were also pretty even and close. After the first period, San Jose and San Diego both shot seven. After the second period, San Jose outshot San Diego 11-8. And to end the game, San Diego outshot San Jose 11-4.

Both teams had a shot to show off their special teams in Wednesday night’s game. San Jose went to the box four times while San Diego only went to the box two times, San Diego was able to capitalize on their powerplay. San Jose came in fourth on the powerplay and last on the penalty kill. San Diego came in last on the powerplay and second on the penalty kill.

The goalie matchup in Wednesday night’s game was Gabriel Carriere for San Jose and Ville Husso for San Diego. Carriere was coming off of an overtime loss against the Abbotsford Canucks while Husso was coming off of a 17 save shutout against the Abbotsford Canucks.

Carriere, making 21 saves on 25 shots recorded the loss, his record now moves to 3-3-2. On the other side, Husso, who made 18 saves on 22 shots recorded the loss and his record is now 6-5-1.
