Barracuda fall to Condors in shootout 2-1

BAKERSFIELD–San Jose Baracuda couldn’t hold on losing in a shootout 2-1 in Bakersfield on Saturday. Coming down the right side, Colin White scored to give San Jose a first period 1-0 lead. His first goal since coming back from injury.

On a shot from the blue line, Josh Brown tied the game at 1-1 with four minutes left in the game. Game went into overtime but it wasn’t enough as it went to a shootout. Josh Brown was the winner, scoring the only goal in the shootout.

After the first period, San Jose who had the lead, outscored Bakersfield twelve to seven. After the second period, Bakersfield outshot San Jose thirteen to six. And after the third period, to end the game, Bakersfield outshot San Jose fifteen to thirteen.

Coming into tonight’s game, the visiting San Jose Barracuda had a 25.2% on the powerplay and a 74.5% on the penalty kill. For the home Bakersfield Condors, they had a 26.2% on the powerplay and a 80.0% on the penalty kill. In tonight’s game, neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities. San Jose had three chances while Bakersfield had four.

Gabriel Carriere and Connor Ungar got the start in tonight’s game. Carriere came into the game with a 0-1 record against this Condors team. Recording the win/loss and making 37 saves on 38 shots, his record now moves to 0-2 against the Condors. Ungar came into the game with a 0-0 record against this Barracuda team, making his first start against San Jose. Recording the win and making 33 saves on 34 shots, his record now moves to 1-0 against the Barracuda.

Barracuda kick off New Year with a 4-1 loss against Condors

BAKERSFIELD–The San Jose Barracuda grabbed an important game to maintain position in the AHL standings with a 4-1 win over the Bakersfield Condors on Friday night. Coming onto the ice at the right time, Filip Bystedt shot one through goaltender Matt Tomkins to put San Jose ahead of Bakersfield 1-0 early in the first period. After being left open, Max Jones tied the game at 1-1.

Bakersfield took a 2-1 lead three minutes into the second period when Roby Järventie beat Jakub Skarek above his left shoulder.

Speeding through San Jose’s zone, Connor Clattenburg extended Bakersfield’s lead to 3-1. To seal the win, Seth Griffith scored an empty net goal to seal the 4-1 Bakersfield win.

After the first period, San Jose had the 1-0 lead and also outshot Bakersfield 11-8. After the second period, Bakersfield had the 2-1 lead but shots were even, 11 each. After the third period, Bakersfield, who scored twice, outshot San Jose 12-9.

San Jose wasn’t able to stay out of the penalty box, sitting down six different times while Bakersfield only went to the box one time. Neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities. Coming into Friday night’s game, San Jose was second on the powerplay while Bakersfield was first. Shorthanded, San Jose was last and Bakersfield was fourth.

Jakub Skarek, who is 1-0 against Bakersfield got the start for San Jose. Skarek recorded the loss, making 27 saves on 30 shots. For the Condors, Matt Tomkins who is 0-1 against San Jose, got the start in Friday night’s game. Tomkins recorded the win, making 30 saves on 31 shots. Gabriel Carriere and Connor Ungar are expected to get the starts in Friday night’s game.

SAN JOSE–Aatu Jämeson got the Ontario Reign on the board first, scoring his fifth of the season after picking up a loose puck and sneaking it past Jakub Skarek. Andre Lee beat Skarek on his glove side to extend Ontario’s lead to 2-0 at 3:47 of the third. To seal the win, Nikita Alexandorov scored an empty net goal to extend their lead to 3-0.

Going up 1-0 into the first intermission, Ontario outshot San Jose 9-8. After the second period, San Jose outshot Ontario thirteen to seven but weren’t able to score. After the third period, San Jose outshot Ontario 11-5.

San Jose was the first to show their powerplay units. They had three opportunities but weren’t able to capitalize. Ontario had two chances but also weren’t able to capitalize. Coming into tonight’s game, San Jose had a 27.4% on the powerplay and 73.7% on the penalty kill. For Ontario, they came into Saturday night’s game 18.1% on the powerplay and 79.5% on the penalty kill.

Jakub Skarek got the start for San Jose. Skarek, who is coming off of a win against this same Ontario team, recorded his fourth loss. With the loss, his record now moves to 10-4-0-1. Isaiah Saville got the start for Ontario. Saville who is coming off of a loss against this San Jose team, recorded his fifth win. Making 32 saves on 32 shots, his record now moves to 5-1-1-1.

#1 The San Jose Barracuda were in command with a three goal with a win over the Ontario Reign 6-3 Sunday at the Toyota Center.

#2 The Barracuda with the win improve to 17-9-1-1 second in the AHL Pacific Division behind the first place Colorado Eagles. The Barracuda are only three points behind the Eagles for that coveted first place spot.

#3 Marko, the Barracuda got goals in the first period from Jimmy Hunington for his fifth goal, Kasper Halttunen scored his sixth goal, and Shane Bowers picked up his first goal of the season what’s your impression of these scorers and that opening period.

#4 The Barracuda would add three more insurance goals with Filip Bystedt scoring his eighth goal in the second period. In the third period the Barracuda scored twice with Patrick Giles with his fifth goal, Pavol Regenda scored his fourth goal for the Barracuda’s sixth goal of the game.

Barracuda wrap up roadtrip with a 6-3 win over Reign

The San Jose Barracuda showed off their special teams once again to start the game that helped lead for a 6-3 win against the Ontario Reign on Sunday. After Ontario’s Andre Lee was given a two minute roughing penalty and a game misconduct, Jimmy Huntington extended his point streak to two games.

As a result of San Jose not being able to clear the puck out of their zone, Ontario tied the game at one a piece. Jared Wright with his sixth goal of the season. Picking up a loose puck, Halttunen beat Sholl on his glove side to give San Jose their lead back. 30 seconds later, Shane Bowers scored his first goal in a Barracuda sweater to extend their lead to 3-1.

Staying aggressive in the second period, Filip Bystedt extended San Jose’s lead to 4-1. Ontario didn’t give up without a fight. Koehn Ziemmer scored his second of the season to cut into San Jose’s two goal lead. With two minutes left, Patrick Giles scored an empty net goal to extend San Jose’s lead. To seal the win, Pavol Regenda scored an empty net goal to improve to a 6-3 lead.

With the score being as close as it was, the shots were pretty close also. After the first period, Ontario outshot San Jose by one shot, 11-10. After the second period, Ontario outshot San Jose again, this time ten to eight. With four minutes left in the game, Jack Hughes scored to make it a one goal game.

Today’s game was very chippy which means there were a good amount of penalties taken. San Jose went to the box five times while Ontario went to the box four times. San Jose was able to capitalize on one of their three chances while Ontario didn’t capitalize on either of their two chances.

Gabriel Carriere got the start for San Jose, and making his AHL debut in today afternoon’s game, Mattias Sholl got the start for Ontario. Carriere, who recorded the win made 23 saves on 25 shots, and now has a record of 7-6-2-1. Sholl, who recorded the loss, and made 17 saves on 21 shots now has a AHL record of 0-1.

Jakub Skarek makes 19 saves in Barracuda’s 4-3 shootout win

Egor Afanasyev opened up the scoring and put San Jose up on top first. In his first game back since his injury, Colin White registered the secondary assist. Five minutes later, Martin Chromiak of the Ontario Reign made teddy bears fly all over to tie the game at 1-1 a piece.

Shorthanded, Andre Lee gave Ontario their first lead of the game. After Cole Guttman was given a ten minute misconduct, Egor Afanasyev tied the game for his second goal of the game.

With their second powerplay goal of the game, Oliver Wahlstrom gave San Jose their lead back. Musty, who drew the penalty that put them on the powerplay, registered the primary assist. With 45 seconds left of the game, Andre Lee tied the game at three to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, it headed to a shootout.

Round one, both teams scored. Round two, Bystedt missed and Ward missed. Round three, Afanasyev scored, Chromiak missed. Skarek with the save, Barracuda win 4-3.

Both teams showed off their special teams in Saturday night’s game. San Jose took advantage and went two for eight on the powerplay while Ontario went zero for four. Coming into Saturday night’s game, San Jose had the advantage on the powerplay, ranking first in the Pacific Divison. On the other hand, Ontario had the upper hand on San Jose on the penalty kill, ranking third while being shorthanded in the Pacific Division.

Being such a close game, the shots were also very close. After the first period, Ontario outshot San Jose 8-7. After the second period, both teams shot the same, seven shots. After the third period, Ontario outshot San Jose ten to seven.

Jakub Skarek, who made 19 saves on 21 shots, recorded Saturday night’s win. His record now improves to 10-3-0-1. For Ontario, Isaiah Saville got the start in the net. He recorded 18 saves on 21 shots and his record now moves to 4-2-0-1.

The Barracuda will be back in action Sunday December 21st at the Toyota Center in Ontario for 3:00pm PT, wrapping up their roadtrip against these same Reign. They will be looking to the series. Gabriel Carriere and Mattias Sholl are expected to make the starts in net.

Barracuda fall to Firebirds 4-2 in midweek matchup

The San Jose Barracuda took a tough loss to the Coachella Valley Firebirds 4-2 Tuesday night. After the Barracuda failed to keep the puck in their zone, Firebirds took advantage and scored for the first goal in Wednesday night’s midweek matchup in.

John Hayden put his team on top first, poking the puck in after many attempts. San Jose starting the third period on a powerplay and eventually getting 5 on 3 action, Oliver Wahlstrom scored his sixth powerplay goal to tie the game at 1-1. Mitchell Stephens, who beat the Barracuda to the puck, gave his team the lead again at 5:40 of the third period.

A minute into their third powerplay opportunity of the third period, Filip Bystedt tied the game at 2-2 a piece, scoring his third powerplay goal of the season. Picking up the ricochet and going coast to coast, Oskar Fisker Molgaard put his team ahead with 3:16 left of the third. To seal the win, Logan Morrison scored an empty net goal.

After the first period, San Jose outshot Coachella Valley nine to seven. After the second period, both teams had 14 shots on goal. After the third period, San Jose outshot Calgary 17-9. As a result, San Jose outshot Coachella Valley 40-30.

Both teams had a shot to show off their special teams. For San Jose, they went 2-5 on the powerplay. Coming into tonight’s game, San Jose came second on the powerplay and last on the penalty kill. For Coachella Valley, they went 0 for 5 on the powerplay. Coming into Wednesday night’s game, Coachella Valley came sixth on the powerplay and fifth on the penalty kill.

For San Jose’s Gabriel Carriere, this was his first matchup ever against the Coachella Valley Firebirds. For Coachella Valley, Nikke Koko got the start. Carriere, who recorded the loss, made 26 saves on 29 shots. After coming off of a 27 save win on the 12th, Carriere’s record is now 6-6-2-1. Koko who recorded the win, made 38 saves on 40 shots. After coming off of a 23 saves on 23 shots coming into relief, Koko’s record is now 9-4-1-1.

Barracuda win first on the road trip, 3-2

San Jose Barracuda vs Texas Stars on Friday December 12th at H-E-B Center (via txstarshockey)

The San Jose Barracuda get that first road win with a defeat over the Texas Stars 3-2 on Friday night. Jimmy Huntington opened up the scoring putting the Barracuda up first. 30 seconds later, the stars tied the game at one a piece, courtesy of Curtis Mackenzie. 

Patrick Giles scored at 1:22 of the second to put San Jose back in the lead, 2-1. Jimmy Huntington scored his second of the night to extend their lead to 3-1. 27 seconds later, Jack Becker scored to make the score 3-2 but it wasn’t enough to make it a comeback. 

Despite it being a pretty low scoring game, both teams put up a good amount of shots. After the first period, Texas outshot San Jose 8 to 7. After the second period, Texas outshot San Jose again 13 to 10. And after the third period, Texas outshot San Jose once again 8 to 7. As a total, Texas outshot San Jose 29 to 24. 

Both teams were quiet and stayed away from the penalty box, San Jose taking the only penalty of the game. Anthony Vincent was called for a holding penalty at 16:06 of the second, Texas did not take advantage of their power play. Stars came into the game, last on the power play while San Jose came into the game also last on the penalty kill. 

Gabriel Carriere got the start for San Jose while Remi Poirier got the start for Texas. Carriere, who recorded the win, made 27 saves on 29 shots. His record now moves to 6-5-2-1. Poirier, who recorded the loss, made 21 saves on 24 shots. His record now moves to 6-9-3-1.

The Barracuda will be back in action tomorrow against this same Texas team, looking to sweep the weekend. Jakub Skarek and Arno Tiefensee are expected to get the start in tomorrow’s game.
