Even though the Oakland A’s already opened the regular season, they came home to face their Bay Area rivals, the San Francisco Giants.

Stephen Piscotty, Jurickson Profar and Roman Laureano each hit home runs, as the A’s shutout the Giants 5-0 at the Coliseum.

Brett Anderson went six innings, and Frankie Montas pitched the final six innings, helping the A’s finish off the shutout.

Anderson struck out three and walked just one, while Montas also struck out three, as the two pitchers combined for a three-hitter.

Dereck Rodriguez went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and will be the Giants starter on Saturday against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Piscotty got the A’s on the board in the board in the bottom of the first inning, as he hit a two-run home run that scored Matt Chapman, who walked earlier in the inning.

Profar lengthened the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as he hit a solo home run and Laureano ended the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning, when he hit a solo home run.

NOTES: Catcher Erik Kratz was acquired by the Giants from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league infielder C.J. Hinososa. Stephen Vogt was reassigned to the Giants minor league camp, and right-handed pitcher Jose Lopez was designated for assignment.

UP NEXT: Drew Pomeranz will take the mound on Monday night for the Giants, as the Bay Bridge Series moves to the newly named Oracle Park. Liam Hendriks will take the mound for the A’s. Game time at 6:45 pm.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Joey Bart is all the rage, just how soon will he come up to the show?

sfgate.com photo: San Francisco Giants catcher Joey Bart has already established himself for his hitting but needs to polish up on some defensive catching. He could very well get called up during the Giants regular season.

On the San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 All the talk has been about young Giants prospect catcher Joey Bart. How soon do you think it will be until he will be in the show on a regular basis?

#2 Once promoted, will he be catcher Buster Posey’s regular back up? There’s so much expected of him, can he live up to the hype?

#3 Bart can swing the bats he had an OBP of .369 and hit .296 in spring training.

#4 Giants announcer Mike Krukow said that Bart has some bad habits. This spring, he has allowed six passed balls and committed six errors, but with some coaching, he can break those habits and with his bat and be a big piece of the Giants future.

#5 Once the National League adopts the Universal Designated Hitter rule, could Bart be a starting as catcher and Posey moving to the DH slot?

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Posey coming along from offseason hip surgery, starting every other day

On the San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris:

#1 The San Francisco Giants are going very slow with catcher Buster Posey after his surgery in the offseason. Manager Bruce Bochy says he wants Posey ready by opening day.

#2 On working behind the plate, Posey said he doesn’t want anything written in stone as far as starting in back to back days. He’ll wait for the regular season for that.

#3 Bochy is confident Posey will be able to catch 110-120 games this season

#4 Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner in his last start March 12th, struck out four hitters and picked up an RBI. He was impressive in the outing and at the plate.

#5 The Giants are back in the Bay Area in Oakland for an exhibition game with the A’s on Sunday, March 24th. Morris will be there and talks about some of the expectations that day.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Bumgarner battles his way in last start against Brewers

On the San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Taking a look at Giants starter Madison Bumgarner’s last outing on Tuesday’s game, he looked like he was in regular season form after throwing three perfect innings.

#2 It was later when he gave up hits to the Milwaukee Brewers’ Lorenzo Cain, Christian Yelich, and Yasmani Grandal, which loaded the bases in the fourth inning that some might have questioned how long he could have stayed in this one.

#3 Then, there was plate umpire Brian Gorman. Bumgarner was having a hard time with as he felt Gorman was squeezing him. Bumgarner on a 2-1 pitch to Brewers’ hitter Travis Shaw thought he had strike two extended his arms in protest, then on the next hitter Mike Moustakas. Though, he had another strike call taken away by Gorman and extended his arms again and turned his back and walked back to the mound.

#4 MadBum helped his own cause with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth as the Giants got four runs. It was all they needed in their 4-2 win in Tuesday’s exhibition game.

Police said Tuesday that the 31-year-old was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

On Headline Sports with London:

#1 If things couldn’t get worse for the San Francisco Giants, Giants outfielder Cameron Maybin was arrested at 2:30 am on Friday morning for DUI. He was driving in Scottsdale when he was pulled over by an officer who said he smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes. Maybin was arrested and released two hours later. The team said they are monitoring the situation and had no comment.

#3 How despite losing, the Sacramento Kings played some very close games with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Milwaukee Bucks this past week?

#4 Chaquita Evans became the first woman to be drafted by an NBA team in the NBA 2K league. Does this signal that more women could be playing in the NBA?

#5 The Oakland Raiders and the Oakland Coliseum Authority authorized a two-year deal on Tuesday for the Raiders to stay at the Coliseum for 2019. The team will pay $7.5 million and 2020 is an option year at the cost of $9.5 million. Baer to take leave of absence; Will Baer step down from CEO position?

by Jeremy Harness

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer has released a statement that he will be taking a leave of absence the leave of absence started on Monday following last week’s physical altercation with his wife Pam in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. The two were recorded when Baer reached for his phone which Pam was holding. Baer stood up to get the phone out Pam’s hands and she fell over in the chair she was seated in. Baer stood over his wife and walked away in the video.

Here is the statement released by the San Francisco Giants and Baer today: “The Board of Directors of San Francisco Baseball Associates is closely monitoring the matter involving Giants President and CEO Larry Baer. Pursuant to League policy, Major League Baseball is taking the lead in gathering all facts surrounding the situation. The organization is cooperating fully with the process. Mr. Baer has acknowledged that his behavior was unacceptable, apologized to the organization and is committed to taking steps to make sure that this never happens again. He has also requested, and the Board has accepted, his request to take personal time away from the Giants beginning today (Monday). The Board has asked the Giants executive team to manage the day-to-day operations of the Club during this period, reporting directly to the Board. As leaders in the community, we at the Giants hold ourselves to the highest standards and those standards will guide how we consider this matter moving forward. We have no further comment at this time.”

MLB has suspended MLB players in the past Adroldis Chapman pitcher of the New York Yankees and Jose Reyes of the Colorado Rockies for domestic violence. The talk of a double standard was starting if baseball or the Giants didn’t do anything to Baer to discipline him for domestic violence in a public place. There has been talk about Baer stepping down from his CEO post and MLB suspending him, which is to be determined. If Baer were to step down he would most likely remain a minority owner, but he will not have input on the day to day operations of the club.

The Giants have had some other bad off-the-field issues during the off season the Giants majority owner Charles B Johnson donated $2700 to Republican Mississippi U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s political campaign. Hyde-Smith had said in front of a group of supporters that she would want a front row seat to a public hanging and she was photographed with a Confederate army hat on holding a Confederate rifle.  The blow back forced Johnson to request his money back from Hyde-Smith, while Johnson pleaded that he had no knowledge that Hyde-Smith was a racist.

The Giants family suffered the loses of some key high profile people first with the death of former Giants radio play-by-play announcer Hank Greenwald, followed by former Giants superstar Hall of Fame slugger first baseman Willie McCovey, and most recently, the death of Giants partner owner Peter Magowan.  The Giants had replaced former General Manager with Bobby Evans with Farhan Zaidi after Evans took what same say the blame for the teams woes over the last two seasons. Former Giants first baseman and Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda fell at a golf course and had a close call, but has recovered.

The Giants have suffered losing records for the last two seasons. As a result, it has been grueling on Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who announced his retirement concluding this season. Since the Baer altercation, none of the players, coaches, or front office people have made a statement regarding Baer or his situation. Only Bochy would say that Baer is a friend and has respect for the work he has done for the organization.

San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer in physical confrontation with wife

by Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer on Thursday was recorded by bystanders in a physical altercation with his wife Pam. Baer was arguing with his wife while trying to grab her phone out of her hand. In the ensuing action, Pam fell to the ground in the chair she was sitting in.

Pam shouted “Oh my God!” and was calling for help. Baer was heard telling his wife “Stop Pam stop!” and was seen in the video walking away as witnesses were telling Baer’s wife to stay away from him. Baer and his wife have released a statement regarding the incident apologizing and trying to put a good face on the incident saying,”Regrettably today, we had a heated argument in public over a family matter. We are deeply embarrassed by the situation and have resolved the issue.”

Baer said that he was truly sorry for the embarrassment that he caused his children and his family and to the Giants organization. Baer said that he assured everyone involved that this would not happen again going forward. Pam said that she fell backwards to the ground and lost her balance and that Larry did not push her to the ground, “Ha…An unfortunate public marital argument. I grabbed his phone and I fell back. I love Larry more than anything.”

San Francisco Police are involved and are investigating at the location of the incident and studying the video recording, according to Officer Joseph Tomlinson, who is no relation to San Francisco Giants infielder Kelby Tomlinson. Major League Baseball has established rules about domestic violence to its teams and its employees, which includes players and team executives. MLB is also studying the video and trying to determine if discipline on Baer is called for. New York Yankees pitcher Aroldis Chapman and Colorado Rockies infielder Jose Reyes had been suspended in the past for domestic violence.
