SAN FRANCISCO-Friday night’s dramatic Giant come from behind victory over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers was a hard act to follow. Saturday afternoon’s set between the two rivals, a 2-1 Giants win, managed to do that.

Before the game, the Giants announced the return of two players from the injured list and the placement of two others on it. Rejoining the team are pitcher Jacob Junis and third baseman Evan Longoria.

Going on the IL for 15 and 10 day, respectively, are right handed pitcher Mauricio Llovera, left last night’s contest in the fatidic fifth with what turned out to be a strained right flexor, and Crawford, Longoria’s partner on the left side of the infield. The veteran shortstop has been hampered by injuries all season long; his current one is an inflamed right knee.

The Giants’ starting pitcher also has been a visitor to the injured list. A neck strain kept him on it for 15 days, and this was his sixth start since his June 19 return to active duty. He went 0-2 since then with three no decisions and brought a 3-4, 4.57 mark to the game.

He was brilliant this afternoon, holding Milwaukee to one, unearned, run on four hits and no walks over 7-1/3 innings. He threw 99 pitches, 35 of which were balls. For all that, he went home with a no decision and an ERA reduced to 4.09.

Cobb’s opposite number, lefty Eric Lauer, came to Milwaukee in the deal that brought Luis Urías to the middle west. The five year veteran hurler brought a 6-3, 3.83 mark with him to this, his 17th start of the season.

His performance matched Cobb’s in its brilliance. He lasted seven frames and surrendered a single, earned, run, on only two hits, one of which went the distance, and three walks. He threw 108 pitches, 66 for strikes. He, too, got a no decision and a lowered ERA, 3.65.

The teams traded zeroes until, with two down in the bottom of the sixth, Darin Ruf unloaded on a 94mph four seamer that travelled 377 feet before landing in the left field bleacher. It was the Giants’ first baseman’s ninth home run and 32nd run batted in for the season and put the home team up, 1-0. A fragile lead, but, with the way Cobb, who had thrown only 71 pitches at that point, was dealing with the Brew Crew, a significant one.

That lead became more tenuous when Hunter Renfroe led off the Milwaukee eighth with. a double that sent Austin Slate turning one way and then another one the running track in front of the center field fence Slater misplayed the rebound, allowing Renfroe to take third on the error.

Omar Narváez brought him home with the tying tally on sac fly to left, ending Cobb´s shut out and his day’s work. John Brebbia took over for him. Brebbia walked number nine hitter Jonathan Davis on a full count, and the speedy centerfielder proceeded steak second.

The Giants challenged the call, but it was upheld on review. Christian Yellich struck out, and Bart turned Davis’s attempt at a repeat into a strike ’em out, throw ’em out inning ending double play.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth against Brent Siuter, Bart took a full count change up that home plate umpire Pat Hoberg thought was a strike. Slater and Flores hit back to back singles to left, putting runners on first and second.

Ruf grounded into an unassisted force out at third. That brought Jandel Gustave into the game for the second day in a row. He hit Longoria with a 95 MPH sinker, loading the bases with two outs for Yermín Mercedes.

The count went to two and two, and then came the climactic anticlimax: Hoberg called a balk on Gustave, and San Francisco was ahead, 2-1. Mercedes then took a called third strike. The umpire giveth, and the umpire taketh away.

Dominic Leone came to attempt the save. Adames legged out a hit to deep short and took second when Leone’s pick off throw went wild. But the lion hearted reliever buckled down to retire Tellez, McCutchen, and Wong in order, the last on a called third strike. Brebbia got the win and now is 5-1, 2.45. The save went to Leone, his second in four opportunities.

The loss was charged to Suter, whose record now stands at 1-3, 4.58.

The Giants will go for three in a row Sunday at 1:05, They’ll send Logan Webb (8-3,2.82) against the Brewers Aaron Ashby (2-6, 4.37).

Shut Out On South Beach: Giants can’t solve Alcantara in 3-0 loss to the Marlins

By Morris Phillips

The Marlins with their sub .500 records overall and at home haven’t moved the meter thus far in 2022, but the Miami pitching has. Pablo Lopez and Sandy Alcantara are the headliners with near-100 mph four-seam fastballs, and Alcantara got his chance to make an impression on the reigning NL West champion Giants on Thursday.

Let’s just say mission accomplished.

The 26-year old right hander was electric, throwing 111 pitches with the best of those coming late, in a 3-0 shutout win over the Giants. Alcantara allowed three hits, walked two, struck out eight and kept the Giants off balance by starting 17 of the 25 batters he faced with strikes, and inducing 24 swings and misses. Knowing they were entering a battle, Giants’ hitters got the majority of Alcantara’s pitches out early with several, lengthy at-bats. But the response was simple: as the game wore on, Alcantara became highly efficient, dispatching Giants’ hitters quickly and quietly.

“If it were up to me, I would have stayed until the ninth, but I respect the manager’s decision,” Alcantara said through an interpreter.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly lifted his ace after seven innings, but rightfully termed the process of Alcantara finishing better than he starts by saying, “he finally got that groove that we talk about where it’s like he’s going 75 mph on the highway.”

So ingrained is the process, Mattingly actually delivered the previous quote after Alcantara’s previous start in Atlanta in which he struck out a career-best 14 in eight innings of work.

The timing of Alcantara’s start couldn’t have been better for the Marlins, who played two games in Denver against the Rockies on Thursday before returning home. The Giants, who got an early start in Philadelphia to conclude their series with the Phillies looked like the far more sluggish team as the hosts got RBI hits from Jacob Stallings (second inning), Jesus Aguilar and Miguel Rojas (both in the sixth) to create breathing room for Alcantara.

The Giants dropped their second straight after a pair of wins in Philadelphia. Their lineup was thin with Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria dealing with bumps and bruises along with Darin Ruf away on the bereavement list following the death of his father. The Giants are also missing Lamonte Wade Jr., Brandon Belt and Austin Slater, who took batting practice and could make his way into the lineup on Friday night.

The poorly-situationed Alex Wood didn’t pitch poorly for the Giants. Wood worked into the sixth inning, allowing two runs on four hits. Wood has dropped three, consecutive starts and his record is 3-5.

“Any time you face a guy like Sandy, he’s pretty good, so there’s no going to be a whole lot of room for error,” Wood said afterwards.

The announced pitchers for the second game of the series are the Giants’ Alex Cobb and Miami’s Elieser Hernandez.

Rams edge 49ers 20-17 to win the NFC Championship, will face the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could only hide his face after the 49ers collapsed in the fourth quarter in a giveaway to the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in the NFC Championship (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — For a second consecutive the team from the host city will be playing in the Super Bowl.

Matt Gay’s 30-yard field goal with 1:46 remaining in the fourth quarter was enough to propel the Los Angeles Rams to a 20-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game on Sunday evening at SoFi Stadium.

In a game that went back and forth, the Rams scored the final 13 points of the game and Travin Howard’s interception of 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with 1:09 left in the game booked LA’s ticket to Super Bowl LVI where they will face off against the AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals, who earlier defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 24-21 in overtime.

The Rams pulled a Vincent Gambini, as the 7th time was the charm in finally being able to beat the 49ers

“We came up short today,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. “And that’s a part of sports and a part of life, so you gotta deal with it. Those guys are hurting now, but they’ll rebound, they’ll be strong like before.”

Neither offense could get going on their opening possession which resulted in a three and out for both teams.

Los Angeles got inside the red zone in their second possession, but Jimmy Ward intercepted a tipped ball inside the endzone off of quarterback Matthew Stafford and returned to the 23-yard line.

San Francisco wasn’t able to capitalize on the turnover as their drive stalled near midfield.

The Rams then went on a long drive that consumed over nine and a half minutes of possession. Stafford engineered an 18-play drive that started at their own three-yard line. The drive was capped off with a 16-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who was able to get behind the 49ers’ secondary in the endzone.

The 49ers answered back immediately on their next drive. They only needed four plays to even the game when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo connected with hybrid superstar Deebo Samuel with a wide receiver screen at the line of scrimmage. Samuel performed his magic as he raced down the field before diving for the pylon for a 44-yard touchdown reception.

It was the first offensive touchdown for San Francisco in more than six quarters since they scored in the third quarter against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card game.

Los Angeles was on the verge of responding back on their next drive. However, two big drops, one by Kupp and the other by Ben Skowronek that went off his hands in the endzone stalled the Rams drive at the 49ers 36-yard line.

Matt Gay’s 54-yard field goal attempt missed badly wide right with 1:55 remaining in the first half.

The 49ers responded by going 36 yards on eight plays which resulted in a Robbie Gould 38-yard field goal to end the first half 10-7.

The 49ers defense dominated the third quarter in the trenches as they held the Rams runing game in check. The big momentum turner was the Niners defense stopping Stafford’s quarter back sneak attempt on 4th and 1 near midfield.

Garoppolo rewarded the defense’s effort by marching the offense down the field 58 yards on 10 plays that was capped off by an outstanding reach of a reception by tight end George Kittle for a 16-yard touchdown to put the 49ers up 17-7 with 1:59 left in the third quarter.

Stafford then led the Rams on a seven play, 75-yard drive where he finished it off with an 11-yard touchdown reception to Kupp, his second of the game to cut the lead to 17-14.

Gay kicked the 40-yard game tying field goal with 6:49 left in the fourth quarter as the Rams went 63 yards on nine plays. The key play on that drive was the first play when Stafford threw deep down the middle of the field and Jaquiski Tartt had the ball fall in and out of his hands for a would-be interception. The next play Stafford hit Odell Beckham Jr. with a 29-yard reception and Jimmy Ward was flagged for unnecessary roughness.

“For me that’s something I was thinking about all week, I know I can make that play,” Tartt said. “That was a big opportunity for me, and the team and I just felt like I let my brother down.”

The Rams defense didn’t allow the 49ers offense to score in the fourth quarter as they were able to plug the gaps and not allow San Francisco’s run game to gain any momentum. They also were able to pressure Garoppolo into forced throws as they chased him out of the pocket during the 49ers final two drives.

“I think we won the line of scrimmage,” said Stafford. “Our guys on the outside made plays. It’s a team effort. That’s what it’s all about.”

Los Angeles kept the 49ers defense on the field for the majority of the game. They ran 42 plays in the first half and won the time of possession battle 35:39-24:21. The Niners defense had a difficult time getting off the field on third down that allowed the Rams offense to extend drives into 49ers territory.

“It was a roller coaster of a year, it really was,” Garoppolo said. “We fought through it. We’re a resilient team and that’s what good team do; you fight through things like that (so) you come up better from that.”

Stafford, who will be playing in his first Super Bowl after 13 seasons, finished the game 31 of 45 for 337 yards, two touchdowns, one interception a QB rating of 96.2. Kupp led all wide receivers with 11 catches for 142 yards to go along with his two touchdowns. Odell Beckham Jr. had a productive game with nine catches for 113 yards. Cam Akers, who returned to the lineup, chipped in with 48 yards on 13 carries.

Garoppolo, who might have played his game in San Francisco, finished 16 of 30 for 232 with two touchdowns, one interception and a QB rating of 87.1. Samuel led the 49ers in receiving with four catches for 72 yards, but only contributed 26 yards on the ground on seven carries. Brandon Aiyuk had a quiet game with four catches for 69 yards. Elijah Mitchell had just 20 yards on 11 carries.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 3-for-9 on third down conversions. Los Angeles was 11-for-18.

Despite the loss, San Francisco is 6-1 in their last seven games against Los Angeles.

The attendance, which consisted of a majority of 49ers fans, was 73,202. The normal capacity for SoFi Stadium is 71,500.

Rams tight end Tyler Higbee left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury and did not return to the game.

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles suffered a knee injury in the first half, and he did not return as well as linebacker Dre Greenlaw who suffered a calf injury.

Gould’s last second field goal punches the 49ers into the NFC Championship game with 13-10 win over Packers

San Francisco 49ers kicker Robbie Gould (9) kicks the game winning field goal with no time left in the fourth quarter to help defeat the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay on Sat Jan 22, 2022 at the NFC Divisional round (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

There’s a reason why special teams are called special.

In a game where the San Francisco 49ers offense was as cold as the temperature on the field, it was the special teams that came through as Robbie Gould’s 45-yard field goal as time expired sent his team to the NFC Championship game in a 13-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Playoff game on Saturday evening at Lambeau Field.

“My ultimate goal is to be a Hall-of-Famer and to win a Super Bowl,” said Gould after the game.

Both defenses play exceptionally well but it was the 49ers special teams that was difference in the game as they were responsible for all 13 points.

With the 49ers trailing 10-3 with under five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Jordan Willis blocked Corey Bojorquez’s punt inside the Packers 10-yard line. Talanoa Hufanga picked up the ball at six-yard line and run it in for a game tying touchdown.

San Francisco’s defense forced a three and out and gave the offense one more chance with 3:20 remaining in the game.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who didn’t get help from his offensive line or his receivers during the first half of the game as well as made a couple of poor decisions during the game, led the Niners on a nine play, 44-yard drive to set up Gould’s heroics. The key play on the drive was Deebo Samuel’s nine-yard run on a 3rd and 7 to give San Francisco a first down on the Packers 29-yard line.

Green Bay drew first blood on its opening drive. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers led a methodical drive as he connected with his favorite target wide receiver Davante Adams three times for 35 yards on a 10 play 69-yard drive that was capped off with an AJ Dillion six-yard rushing touchdown.

Despite being set up with good position on its first drive thanks to JaMycal Hasty’s 30-yard kickoff return that set up San Francisco at the Packers 40-yard line, the 49ers went three and out as Garoppolo was sacked on third and 12.

The Packers second possession ended when Fred Warner punched the ball out of the hands of Marcedes Lewis and Dre Greenlaw recovered the ball at the Niners 42-yard line. However, the Niners went three and out after the Packers second sack of Garoppolo.

The Niners offense didn’t fare any better on the next two possessions as dropped balls and a lack of a rushing attack forced San Francisco’s offense into three straight three and outs at the end of the opening 15 minutes with a total of minus seven yards.

San Francisco finally got the offense going near the end of the first half. They were moving the ball with a balanced attack, but the drive ended when Garoppolo threw an interception to Adrian Amos.

It looked like Green Bay was going to take advantage on the ensuing possession as Rodgers found Aaron Jones for a 75-yard reception down to the 49ers 14-yard line. But Mason Crosby’s 39-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Jimmy Ward as time expired as the 49ers special teams made the first of its three big plays of the game.

The 49ers opening drive of the second half was all about Samuel. He returned the kickoff 45 yards to midfield. The hybrid wide receiver-running back also had two receptions of 18 and 12 yards. However, a personal foul penalty of Elijah Mitchell and an illegal formation penalty took the Niners out of a goal line situation. They settled for a 29-yard field goal by Robbie Gould.

Green Bay extended its lead to seven points early in the fourth quarter with a long, time-consuming drive that went 14 plays, 57 yards eating up nine minutes off the clock that resulted in a 33-yard field goal by Crosby. Rodgers was six for six for 44 yards on the drive as the Packers took a page out of the Niners playbook running the ball through the Niners defense.

San Francisco had a chance to tie the game earlier in the fourth quarter, but they weren’t able to convert a 4th and 1 from the Packers 19-yard line. Rashawn Gary blew up a run up the middle by Mitchel as the 49ers turned it over on downs with 6:14 remaining.

Rodgers, who might have played his last game in Green Bay, finished 20 of 29 for 225 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and a QB rating of 91.9. Devante Adams, who also could have played his game as a Packer, had nine catches for 90 yards. Jones had just 41 yards on the ground in 12 carries but had 129 receiving yards on nine catches.

“I’m gonna take some time and have conversations with the folks around here, and then take some time away and make a decision, obviously before free agency,” Rodgers said.

Garopollo finished 11 of 19 for 131 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and a QB rating of just 57.1. Tight end George Kittle led San Francisco in receiving with four catches for 63 yards. Samuel finished with 83 total yards (39 rushing and 44 receiving). Mitchell had a quiet game with 53 yards on 17 carries.

“Jimmy G (Garopollo), you can’t say enough about that guy. The sh*t he takes,” Kittle said.

The 49ers defense sacked Rodgers five times and forced five three and outs as the unsung hero of the game.

“After we won, I didn’t want to leave the field,” said 49ers defensive tackle Arik Armstead. “I just don’t want to go home…We keep making plays.”

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 4-for-11 on third down conversions. Green Bay was 5-for-12.

San Francisco running back Jeff Wilson Jr. suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter and did not return to the game.

Dillion suffered a chest injury in the third quarter. He did not return to the game.

Rodgers, who is 0-4 against San Francisco in four playoff games, had his second career playoff game with no touchdowns.

UP NEXT: San Francisco await the winner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers/Los Angeles Rams Divisional Playoff game for the NFC Championship Game on Sunday 1/30 at 3:40pm.
