It’s only the preseason but things need to get cleaned up on the offensive side of the ball.

The San Francisco 49ers had another stellar performance by their defense, while the offense looked in preseason form in their 17-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday evening at U.S. Bank Stadium.

San Francisco improved to 2-0 on the preseason, while Minnesota dropped to 0-2.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had his backup quarterbacks rotating every two series to start the game. The majority of the offensive and defensive starters, including Tre Lance and Fred Warner, sitting this one out as this was an opportunity for guys on the bubble to make an impression before the cutdown to from 85 to 80 happens on August 23rd.

The defense stood out on the Vikings first drive. An outside corner blitz led to Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond to force a throw up in the air only to have 49er cornerback George Odom intercept the ball and return it for 34 yards.

Another welcome sighting was the play of defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. He recorded one sack and was in the backfield during his time in the first half. It was Kinlaw’s first game action since he tore his ACL last October.

The offensive side of the ball was another story in the first half. A combination of dropped by balls by three different players, penalties, bad pass protection from the offensive line led to just two Robbie Gould field goals as San Francisco trailed Minnesota 7-6 at halftime.

The 49ers were 1/7 on third down conversions and 0/2 on fourth down conversions in the first half.

San Francisco’s defense had three takeaways during the game and have six in the first two preseason games with five interceptions and one fumble recovery. The combo of Malik Turner and Sam Womack III were responsible for the fumble recovery.

Nate Sudfeld led a 14-play, 79 yard drive at the end of third quarter that resulted in a JaMycal Hasty two-yard rushing touchdown to give the Niners a 14-7 lead with 14:57 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Sudfeld finished the game 13 of 17 for 102 yards and one touchdown. Brock Purdy was 14 of 23 for 128 yards and no interceptions. Neither separated themselves for the backup quarterback job as they both played better in the second half.

Mond finished 10 of 20 for 82 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Sean Mannion was 10 of 15 for 65 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

GAME NOTES: 49ers offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez made his NFL debut in the final two minutes of the game and received the game ball from Shanahan.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: What’s keeping 49ers from dealing Garoppolo?; Is the $24.2 million pact keeping teams away?

San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo (left) and Trey Lance (right) tune up in practice camp back on Jul 29, 2021. Garoppolo is still being shopped by the 49ers. (AP photo file)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 Dave, Jimmy Garoppolo has been said to have practically vanished from the team after he signed the big contract in 2018.

#2 There was talk that Garoppolo ignored the coaching staff after signing the contract. An unnamed member of the 49ers coaching staff said that Garoppolo virtually disappeared and did not contact the team for weeks after signing the big contract in 2018.

#3 Garoppolo is in the last year of his contract and the team wants to deal him do you think the biggest reason why he hasn’t moved onto a new team yet is because of the price tag of the last year of this contract at $24.2 million.

Lance starts and plays well in preseason debut as 49ers take down Packers 28-21

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — It was the first installment of the Tre Lance show in Santa Clara.

Lance played well in two offensive series throwing for one touchdown as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Green Bay Packers 28-21 in the first preseason game of 2022 on Friday evening at Levi’s Stadium.

The enthusiasm for Lance was expected from the 49ers faithful during the team’s first drive with Lance under center. The opening drive went nine plays, 27 yards that resulted in a 38-yard field goal by Robbie Gould. Lance was 2/3 for 11 yards as well as a seven yard scramble on the drive’s opening play.

“Solid,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Lance’s play. “On the first play he made a good scramble. It was nice to come down on that third down play to Danny (Grey). So he did some good things, a good first game. Wished we could’ve kept him out there a little more, but (you) gotta get him out.”

Despite Jimmy Garoppolo still being on the roster, Shanahan has give the keys to Lance to lead his offense in 2022. Lance finished the game 4/5 for 92 yards and one touchdown.

“Trying to get bet better,” said Lance when asked what his goal was for the game. “Having the training camp mind set. Be efficient, take care of the ball and give those guys a chance. The offensive line played well. The young guys did a great job. It’s a lot more fun to win.”

On the flip side, the NFL’s reigning MVP, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not play in the team’s first preseason game. Instead backup quarterback Jordan Love started and played all of the first half.

Love connected with wide receiver Romeo Doubs on a 33-yard touchdown reception down the right sideline to give the Packers 7-3 lead. The drive went eight plays, 80 yards in just 3:23.

Green Bay’s lead didn’t last long. On the first play of the second drive. Lance showed off his canon of an arm when he found Danny Grey wide open down the left sideline and Grey raced in for a 76-yard touchdown to put the Niners back on top 10-7.

Marcelino McCrary intercepted Love at the four-yard line and returned it 57 yards to the Packers 39-yard line. On the ensuing drive, backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld only needed one play to find Ray Ray McCloud on post route for a 39-yard touchdown. Sudfeld finished 8/11 for 103 yards and one touchdown as he vies for the backup QB job.

Love threw his second touchdown pass late in the second quarter with a 33-yard pass to Danny Davis to close out the first half at 20-14. It wasn’t a great overall game for Love as he finished 13/24 for 176 yards with two touchdowns and two badly thrown interceptions.

“It could’ve been a better night for everybody,” said Love. “The ball bounced a weird way. The 49ers capitalized on those plays. Obviously, no one wants that to happen and it sucks when it does.”

Sam Womack III had two interceptions to led the relentless 49ers secondary that has gone from the defense’s Achilles heal a season ago to one of its strengths.

“I think the defense as a whole works really well together,” said linebacker Fred Warner. “When the D-line is disrupting, sticking in the back end, that’s when you’re going to create big plays. We have really good players right now and we’re continuing to get better everyday.”

Each team traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Danny Etling, who replaced Love in the second half, threw a 22-yard touchdown to Amari Rodgers. Brock Purdy, who replaced Sudfeld in the fourth quarter, found Tanner Hudson from five yards out with 7:58 remaining.

Tyrion Davis-Price, a third round draft selection this year, led the 49ers in rushing with 10 rushes for 36 yards. Tyler Goodson led the Packers with 12 rushes for 37 yards. Purdy was 3/6 for 36 yards and one touchdown.

Grey led San Francisco in receiving with two catches for 99 yards. BJ Baylor had two catches for 75 yards to pace Green Bay.

UP NEXT: San Francisco takes on the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday 8/20 at 4:00pm at U.S. Bank Stadium.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: How Deebo and Lance are the NFL’s top one two punch

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) on a pass to teammate wide receiver Deebo Samuel (19) are considered the best quarterback-wide out combo in football (San Francisco Chronicle file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had Trey Lance throwing decoy practice throws some wildly and some intercepted deliberately to keep any scouts or spies from dissecting Lance’s real throws from his deliberate throw into traffic throws. Leaving them to wonder what’s real and what isn’t the real Lance pass.

#2 It’s been said that the 49ers are a team that isn’t depending heavily on Lance to win games and that having a dominating quarterback isn’t something that will get the 49ers deep in the playoffs. Wasn’t that much of the style in past seasons for Jimmy Garoppolo when he got them in post season?

#3 How much would you go along with the fact that wide receiver Deebo Samuel and Lance are one of the best one two punches in the NFL.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Garoppolo in camp and throws look good 49ers still shopping him

San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo (left) and Trey Lance (right) tune up in camp back on Jul 29, 2021. Both are tuning up in Camp 2022 at the 49ers practice facility in Santa Clara as the 49ers continue to shop Garoppolo (AP News file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes:

#1 Joe, Jimmy Garoppolo is in camp his throws look good and the 49ers are still shopping him and if he remains with the team will be a back up for quarterback Trey Lance.

#2 What would you point to as the main reason why the 49ers weren’t able to deal Garoppolo yet at this point.

#3 Deebo Samuel in the off season wanted to leave the 49ers in meeting with the press never gave an answer why he was seeking to go to another team but the answer might be follow the money and it followed him $73.5 million on a three year extension.

#4 Samuel did admit getting a deal done gave him the feeling of pressure if he was going to get a good deal on the other side of it how much pressure was on head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch to get it done?

#5 The 49ers host the Green Bay Packers on Fri Aug 12th in their first pre season game what’s the chances of seeing quarterbacks Lance and the Packers Aaron Rogers getting a few snaps?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Deebo relieved to get the deal done; Gets 3 year extension for $73.5 million

Deebo Samuel takes a run in practice on Wed Jul 27, 2022 at the San Francisco 49ers practice facility in Santa Clara. Samuel signed a three year extension with the 49ers for $73.5 million. (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David Zizmor:

#1 David, Deebo Samuel said he had a lot of pressure to get a deal done with the San Francisco 49ers at the right price. Samuel said that at the end of the day business is business. He had expressed an interest in playing elsewhere signed a three year extension worth $73.5 million.

#2 In what could be explained as a turbulent off season for Deebo he was telling the 49ers basically he was leaving and without an extension he was taking his business elsewhere. That’s when general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan went into panic mode and tried to get something worked out with Samuel.

#3 David next week the 49ers open up their first pre season game on Fri Aug 12th against the Green Bay Packers at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. As noted by Joe Hawkes who does the 49ers Sunday podcasts said that the 49ers will not be using quarterback Trey Lance and the Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers most likely will not see any action that night.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Lance has nothing but good things to say about Garoppolo

San Francisco 49ers who met with the news media this week said that he had nothing but good things to say about former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco Chronicle file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance said there is nothing weird about saying that he can only say nothing but good things about 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who guided and mentored Lance when he first came to the 49ers.

#2 Lance said that Garoppolo could have made it hell for him when he first got the Niners but he didn’t and he helped Lance out with everything.

#3 Garoppolo is not going to be released by the 49ers but the 49ers are still shopping Garoppolo. The Miami Dolphins have showed interest in Garoppolo. The best time is to trade now.

#4 Joe, talk about linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair who had off season surgeries on his left knee and left elbow. Al-Shaair said that his knee surgery recovery is not as bad as recovery from the elbow surgery.

#5 Yes it’s only pre season but it means a lot to a lot of people everywhere when the Green Bay Packers come calling on Fri Aug 12 against the 49ers at Levi Stadium. How much will you see of Aaron Rogers and Trey Lance in that one?

49ers continue prep for 2022 season on Day 4 of training camp

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle gets the blood pumping during warmups during a training camp practice at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday Jul 30, 2022. (Sports Radio Service)

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In the last practice before they strap on the pads for full contact, the San Francisco 49ers were busy working out the kinks on Day 4 of Training Camp at their training facility just outside Levi’s Stadium.

There was grim news to begin the day from head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst tore his biceps in practice yesterday and will require surgery to repair his biceps. Hurst will most likely miss the entire 2022 season.

San Francisco was already thin on their defensive line with Hassan Ridgeway out (mild quad strain) and Arik Armstead who suffered a knee sprain and will be out a few weeks according to Shanahan.

Quarterback Trey Lance led the offense out in team drills. During 11-on-11 team drills, Lance showed off his running ability, eluding the rush when the pocket broke down around him. He showed off his strong arm that has his teammates impressed.

The 49ers running game led by Elijah Mitchell and JaMychal Hasty had impressive runs during the 11-on-11 team drill.

However, once again for a third straight practice, the vaunted defense of the 49ers stole the show to the delight of the 49ers Faithful who were in attendance.

Linebacker Fred Warner was the star of the defense with a knock away on a George Kittle reception attempt. Warner also had an interception off of Lance who was trying to connect with Ray Ray McCloud.

Other defensive players that stood out was Tarvarius Moore who had two interceptions himself, one of Lane and the other off of quarterback Nate Sudfeld.

Neither Sudfeld or Brock Purdy, both who are battling for the backup QB spot, looked impressive with Sudfeld having numerous overthrows and Purdy not making quick decisions.

Shanahan said he’s liked what he has seen from Lance during the first week of training camp. “Yeah I think I said the last time I thought he had a really good day. I was very happy with the throws. There’s something we have to get on the same page with wide outs on and that’s what camp’s for letting it rip.”

The 49ers have Sunday off to get prepared for their first practice with the pads on Monday morning.

NEWS AND NOTES: Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw participated in team drills but was limited as the coaching staff is being cautious with him. Kinlaw is coming off surgery to repair his ACL he tore last November.

Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey participated in team drills for the first time since training camp began.

San Francisco’s first preseason game is on Friday 8/12 hosting the Green Bay Packers at 5:30pm at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Shanahan says “This is Trey’s team”

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel throws the ball around in the team’s camp in Santa Clara on Tue Jul 26, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says the team is not fooling around when they say their looking for a taker on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

#2 Shanahan also said during practice this week that “this is Trey’s team”

#3 Shanahan also said that the 49ers have been trying to off load Garoppolo since the beginning of last season. The 49ers are still looking for takers but are having trouble as Garoppolo is in his final year of his $24 million contract and most teams have backed taking on his salary.
