San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: 49ers have lots to choose from in their backfield; SF getting ready for Fields, Bears in Chicago

San Francisco 49ers running back Eli Mitchell (25) takes off downfield in first half action against the Minnesota Vikings Sun Nov 28, 2021 at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. Mitchell is part of a ten man backfield roster for opening day in Chicago on Sun Sep 11, 2022 (AP News file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, the 49ers are carrying five running backs, four tight ends, and a fullback on the current 53 man roster that’s a lot of offense coming into the regular season.

#2 The Niners had so many running backs that they had to cut Trey Sermon what will his absence mean for the team and it looks like the 49ers didn’t have much of a choice in cutting him.

#3 As of Friday other NFL teams four teams in their backfield had nine players and at tight end. As one basketball team used to use in their motto “Strength in numbers” looks like the 49ers are going with a large number in their offense back field to start this 16 game campaign.

#4 Joe talk about some of the expectations for quarterback Trey Lance heading into opening day next Sunday in Chicago he didn’t look like he got much protection in that last pre season game in Houston but that can’t easily be said because that wasn’t the starting offensive line.

#5 Joe finally the Chicago Bears in the Bears last pre season game starting quarterback Justin Fields got some decent reps going 14-16 for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Looking at the kind of job Fields does finding receivers and give and goes to his running backs how prepared are the 49ers defense in going after Fields next Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Marko Ukalovic: How much confidence does Garoppolo give Niners now that he’s back?

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (left) looks for a fist bump from teammate quarterback Trey Lance (right) during practice at the San Francisco 49ers practice facilities in Santa Clara on Thu Sep 1, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Marko:

#1 Marko how surprised were quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo teammates when they learned that Garoppolo was returning and not being traded away.

#2 Garoppolo got a pay cut and will be receiving $6.5 million in guaranteed base salary and could earn another $500,000 in bonus money and could earn up to $8.45 million in incentives.

#3 Marko talk about Jimmy G’s reaction to getting the chance to return to the 49ers and be the back up for Trey Lance. Garoppolo said, “I’m happy with the way it worked out.”

#4 Turning to the City of Santa Clara and the 49ers settling on a dispute for a total of $1.675 million for lawsuits. The Niners added another $325,000 to the settlement to bring to the over $1.6 million total.

#5 The settlement wasn’t done without a verbal knock down drag out between city council member Anthony Becker who with four other city council members voted in favor of the 49ers settlement and opposed were city council member Kathy Watannbe and Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor. Becker told Watannbe to F off and he started in on the Mayor verbally cussing her out. Gillmor called for a policeman to stand in the hearing room and with his presence the meeting ran without any further verbal exchanges.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Is Garoppolo ready to step in just in case?; Are Niners still Lance’s team?

San Francisco 49ers quarterback who will remain with the team could he end up being back as starting quarterback at some point this season? (CBS Sports file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 Dave, With 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo staying in San Francisco does that mean that there’s just that possibility that the 49ers may not be quarterback Trey Lance’s job after all.

#2 Dave, how concerned will head coach Kyle Shanahan have to be that wide receiver Deebo Samuel most likely will not be in the line up for Sep 11th due to a bad bruise behind his knee which he got during Thursday’s pre season game in Houston?

#3 Reports say that Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields looked much better Saturday in a game the Bears pulled off against Fields old team the Cleveland Browns 21-20. Fields was 14-16 for 156 yards and threw for three touchdowns. Will the 49ers defense have their hands full on Sunday?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Lance hopes not be running all day against Bears in opener

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) is sacked by Houston Texans defensive end Jerry Hughes (55) during the first half at NRG Stadium in Houston on Thu Aug 25, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, Thursday night San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance was trying to run from the Houston Texans pass rush do you see Lance getting some protection on Sun Sep 11th in Chicago.

#2 Joe, 49ers cornerback Samuel Womack noted for leading in pass break ups and played a key role in preventing the Houston Texans from running up the score on the Niners on Thursday Night Football.

#3 Joe, talk about that pass that Womack broke up on a pass from the Texans quarterback Davis Mills intended for receiver Chris Moore in the second quarter.

#4 It’s pre season but how concerning is it that the 49ers got shutout, Lance was running all night and the running backs were stopped by the Texans defensive line.

#5 It’s off to Soldier Field for Sun Sep 11th’s opener against the Chicago Bears how ready are the 49ers to start the regular season?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Would 49ers have been better off just staying in San Francisco?; Troubles with City of Santa Clara

Levi Stadium the site of all operation cost disputes over the last few years between the San Francisco 49ers and the City of Santa Clara. Would the 49ers in hindsight been better off staying and building their own stadium in San Francisco? (file photo from Hochtief)

On 49ers podcast with Marko:

#1 The City of Santa Clara and the San Francisco 49ers continue to their embroil over stadium operation costs. The 49ers offered Santa Clara a $50,000 increase from the $650,000 to $700,000 to the general fund. In all the 49ers want to settle the dispute at a total of $4 million from $3.3 million.

#2 Marko, Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor said a proposal given to city council members by the 49ers ten minutes before a meeting was ridiculous because it did give her or city council members time to contemplate the impacts of the proposal. The conflict was not resolved despite the 49ers latest proposal.

#3 According to 49ers spokesman Rahul Chandhok the 49ers had lengthy discussions on how to settle the dispute with the Santa Clara city attorney over the last three months and that draft proposals were discussed and shared over the last two months and this should not have been a surprise to Gillmor and the city council.

#4 In hindsight considering all the problems with the city the 49ers have had over the operation costs with the city and some fans complaints about sitting in the hot sun on August and September days wouldn’t the team have been better off building the stadium and staying in San Francisco.

#5 Turning to the 49ers on the field the 49ers were shutout on Thursday in Houston 17-0 and 49ers quarterback Trey Lance said that there were mistakes and the team will get better and get ready for opening day on Sep 11th in Chicago.

#6 Marko, how doubtful is the offensive line was it a matter of Lance not getting enough time to throw and had to keep running because of the Houston Texans pass rush?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Daivd Zizmor: Questions on Lance’s timing and accuracy

San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance (5) scrambles and leaps to make a throw under pressure from the Houston Texans defensive line in pre season action at NRG Stadium in Houston Fri Aug 26, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 Dave, do you agree with a good quarterback should throw 90% strikes to receivers but in San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is throwing below 65% any cause for concern on the part head coach Kyle Shanahan?

#2 Lance under center struggled going 7-11 for 49 yards. He was under pressure as the offensive line struggled to contain the Houston Texans pass rush.

#3 It was three drives that Lance struggled in the 49ers open their regular season Sun Aug 11 against the Bears in Chicago at Soldier Stadium will Lance be ready by then?

Texans shutout 49ers 17-0 in final preseason game

Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills (10) is pressured by San Francisco 49ers defensive end Samson Ebukam (56) during the first half at NRG Stadium in Houston on Thu Aug 25, 2022 (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

In the final tune-up before the regular season, the Houston Texans defeated the San Francisco 49ers in a 17-0 shutout in the final preseason game on Thursday evening at NRG Stadium.

San Francisco finished the preseason 2-1 while Houston went undefeated at 3-0.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had the opening day starters begin the game on offense. Quarterback Tre Lance played the entire first quarter and the first drive in the second quarter before being pulled in favor of Nate Sudfeld. Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. started at halfback. The first drive stalled at the Texans 36-yard line after Steven Nelson broke up a deep ball to Deebo Samuel.

On the flip side Texans’ head coach had his opening day starters in the lineup as well. Quarterback Davis Mills led an opening drive that went 85 yards on 11 plays that resulted in rookie running back Dameon Pierce one-yard rushing touchdown. Pierce rushed for six carries on 36 yards during the drive. Charles Omenihu’s roughing the passer penalty kept the drive alive after the defense had stopped a third down conversion attempt.

Lance finished with 7 of 11 for 49 yards as the next three drives didn’t amount to much as the Texans defense forced the second year quarterback to check down the ball that resulted in failed third down conversions. San Francisco was also shutdown on a fourth down conversion attempt.

Mills played the entire first half and opened up the second half with a six play 77-yard drive that was capped off with a 16 yard touchdown reception by Chris Moore. Mills finished 6 of 10 for 58 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Sudfeld and Brock Purdy battled for the backup quarterback role as they rotated in on offense in the second half. Neither distanced themselves from one another in winning the backup role. A combination of penalties, turnovers and dropped balls plagued the offense throughout the second half.

Sudfeld finished 5 of 10 for 49 yards with one interception. Purdy was 13 of 20 for 182 yards and one interception.

The lone offensive bright spot for San Francisco was backup tight end Ross Dwelley who had three catches for 42 yards.

The 49ers coaching staff now has some tough decisions to make between now and August 30th when teams have to cut the rosters down to 53 players for the regular season. There’s a crowded room at running back with Trey Sermon being a possible casualty of the talented backfield.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco was 6-for-15 on third down conversions. Houston was 6-for-14.

UP NEXT: San Francisco opens the regular season on the road against the Chicago Bears on Sunday 9/11 at 10:00am at Soldier Field.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: 49ers Gipson most likely to start for Ward; Safety Jackson knocked down twice keeps getting up; more on Garoppolo

Former Cleveland Brown Tashaun Gipson Sr most likely will fill in for safety Jimmie Ward on opening day Sun Sep 11, 2022 due to Ward’s hamstring injury that head coach Kyle Shanahan said was pretty significant (whodatedwho.com file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 The San Francisco 49ers Jimmie Ward injury is pretty significant according to head coach Kyle Shanahan that the team moved quickly and picked up Tashaun Gipson Sr from the Cleveland Browns. Shanahan said that Ward in danger of missing the opener on Sep 11 in Chicago because of a hamstring injury.

#2 David, how important is it that the 49ers pass rusher Drake Jackson who was knocked down pretty hard by the Minnesota offensive line last Saturday got up and battled some more which had Shanahan saying most players would be done but Jackson is a different kind of player.

#3 Dave, the Seattle Seahawks are waiting, hoping that the 49ers release quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo so they would avoid his $26 million guaranteed salary and the Seahawks like other NFL teams are trying to wait this out as opening week approaches.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Sudfeld most likely back up quarterback to Lance

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nate Sudfeld (7) prepares to heave one against the Minnesota Vikings defense on Sat Aug 20, 2022 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, there was a combination of back up in Saturday night’s game in Minnesota for head coach Kyle Shanahan to evaluate we’ll start with the back up quarterbacks vying for a job at the quarterback position Brock Purdy and Nate Sudfeld what impressed you most about their work under center?

#2 Sudfeld went 13-17 for 102 yards and a touchdown he’s been getting a lot of looks in the last two pre season games.

#3 Brock Purdy could end up as the third stringer for Trey Lance, Purdy 14-23 for 128 yards from the sound of head coach Kyle Shanahan he’s pretty keyed in on Purdy.

#4 Joe, talk about the defense they held the Vikings to seven points is this reflective of the kind of defense the 49ers will have in the regular seaon?

#5 49ers return back to Santa Clara on Thu Aug 25th against the Houston Texans. Will Lance get to play the first half in this one and what are some of the things that coach Shanahan looks for in this final pre season game.

49ers offense sloppy, defense the star of the show in 14-7 preseason win over Vikings

San Francisco 49ers defensive back Tayler Hawkins, center, celebrates with teammates linebacker Segun Olubi, left, and safety George Odum, right, after intercepting a pass during the second half against the Minnesota Vikings at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

It’s only the preseason but things need to get cleaned up on the offensive side of the ball.

The San Francisco 49ers had another stellar performance by their defense, while the offense looked in preseason form in their 17-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday evening at U.S. Bank Stadium.

San Francisco improved to 2-0 on the preseason, while Minnesota dropped to 0-2.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had his backup quarterbacks rotating every two series to start the game. The majority of the offensive and defensive starters, including Tre Lance and Fred Warner, sitting this one out as this was an opportunity for guys on the bubble to make an impression before the cutdown to from 85 to 80 happens on August 23rd.

The defense stood out on the Vikings first drive. An outside corner blitz led to Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond to force a throw up in the air only to have 49er cornerback George Odom intercept the ball and return it for 34 yards.

Another welcome sighting was the play of defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. He recorded one sack and was in the backfield during his time in the first half. It was Kinlaw’s first game action since he tore his ACL last October.

The offensive side of the ball was another story in the first half. A combination of dropped by balls by three different players, penalties, bad pass protection from the offensive line led to just two Robbie Gould field goals as San Francisco trailed Minnesota 7-6 at halftime.

The 49ers were 1/7 on third down conversions and 0/2 on fourth down conversions in the first half.

San Francisco’s defense had three takeaways during the game and have six in the first two preseason games with five interceptions and one fumble recovery. The combo of Malik Turner and Sam Womack III were responsible for the fumble recovery.

Nate Sudfeld led a 14-play, 79 yard drive at the end of third quarter that resulted in a JaMycal Hasty two-yard rushing touchdown to give the Niners a 14-7 lead with 14:57 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Sudfeld finished the game 13 of 17 for 102 yards and one touchdown. Brock Purdy was 14 of 23 for 128 yards and no interceptions. Neither separated themselves for the backup quarterback job as they both played better in the second half.

Mond finished 10 of 20 for 82 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Sean Mannion was 10 of 15 for 65 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

GAME NOTES: 49ers offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez made his NFL debut in the final two minutes of the game and received the game ball from Shanahan.

UP NEXT: San Francisco finishes out the preseason against the Houston Texans on Thursday 8/25 at 5:15pm at NRG Stadium.
