That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Cuba wins first Caribbean Series in 55 years

by Amaury Pi-González

SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO– At Hiram Bithorn Stadium. The Cuban champion Vegueros de Pinar del Rio, won the first Caribbean Series of Baseball for Cuba since 1960. The Cuban team didn’t wait for President Obama and the Castro’s dictatorship to re-establish relations, they took matters in their own hands, as Cuba beat Mexico 3-2. The first Caribbean Series took place in Havana, Cuba in 1949, Cuba won it, and then dominated for the next ten years, but in 1961 Cuba’s Fidel Castro declared Cuba a communist state and barred all professional sports in the country. This happened because Cuba broke relations with the John F.Kennedy administration.

It was a home run in the eighth inning by Yulieski Gourriel that decided the game and the series for the Cubans. Dozens of major league scouts were in San Juan, Puerto Rico following this series. The Cuban squad lost two players who defected last week and asked for political exile, 19 year old pitcher Vladimir Gutiérrez, who was the Rookie of Year in the Cuban League in 2014, and 30 year old shortstop Dainer Moreira. They did not hang around to see their trophy, but will file papers and start their inevitable journey to the Major Leagues. The Dominican Republic were the favorites, Cuba’s victory is considered something of an upset. Venezuela and Puerto Rico were the other teams in the tournament.

Fifty-five years have gone-by since Cuba won the popular Caribbean World Series. In 1960 neither the Oakland Athletics or the San Francisco Giants had won a World Series for their Northern California cities. The Giants were 2 years old in San Francisco and the Atléticos were the Kansas City A’S. 1960 was the last year that the Havana Sugar Kings of the International League (AAA) played and won that league. Of all Latin American players these days, the ones from Cuba have a great advantage, as many of them rarely go through the minor leagues, but come directly from Cuba, after they defect,to play in the majors. Cuba’s Frederic Cepeda the 34-year old veteran outfielder, who played in Japan last year, won the tournament MVP.

In 2014 the Cuban team had an early exit, so this was a very sweet victory for the Cubanos since they returned to this Caribbean classic. The 2016 Caribbean Series is going to take place at Estadio Francisco Micheli in La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Even prior to Fidel Castro and Raúl Castro birth, baseball was the #1 and most popular sport in the largest island in the Caribbean. Baseball was introduced in Cuba in 1864, and Cubans helped spread the game throughout the Caribbean. Currently, professional leagues exist in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. The seasons last from October to January, and since 1949 the winners of each of the four leagues have competed in the Caribbean Series each February.

Amaury Pi-González will begin his 38th season as a Major League Baseball play by play announcer as the Spanish Radio Voice for the Oakland Atheltics and also Fox Sports West TV Play by play for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Amaury was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2010. Amaury does News and Commentary each week on http://www.sportsradioservice.com

A’s change everything except their own expectations

By Morris Phillips

Curt Young, as rooted within the A’s organization as anyone outside Billy Beane, and as low-key as any human anywhere, seemed curious just like the any of the fans attending the team’s annual Fanfest on Sunday. In particular, non-roster invitee Pat Venditte, currently the only professional pitcher adept at pitching with either hand, held Young’s attention.

“Does he play catch with himself?” Young wondered.

When asked if the minor league pitcher would need twice the normal bullpen work, Young seemed genuinely vexed. After a pause and some thinking, Young answered, yes, knowing that Venditte, at least initially would provide a bit of a challenge for a coach long set in his methods.

During a Q&A session held inside Oracle Arena with the rain and the revamping going on inside the stadium, a young fan asked how do ballplayers get their nicknames. New bullpen coach Scott “Emo” Emerson thought instead of answering the kid’s question the time was right to gift newly acquired pitcher R.J. Alvarez his nickname.

“Shaggy,” Emerson declared, looking at the speechless Alvarez, the latest in a long line of lovable athletes with uncontrollably long hair.

And so it went for most of the afternoon, a meet and greet—heavier on the meet—that seemed to satisfy the most anxious fan attempting to figure out what type of team the 2015 A’s will be. Here’s what we know:

Beane orchestrated nine off-season trades the GM says were prompted by the team’s poor performance in last season’s second half that showed the team had gone as far as it could go as constructed in his estimation. The A’s said goodbye to Jon Lester, John Jaso, Brandon Moss, Josh Donaldson, Jason Hammel (just to name a few) and picked up 27 players—many not major-league ready—most notably Ben Zobrist from Tampa Bay, Tyler Clippard from Washington and signed Royals DH Billy Butler to a three-year free agent deal.

Among the lesser names the A’s acquired, Marcus Semien from the White Sox shows the most immediate promise as the team’s successor to the departed Jed Lowrie.

The A’s still have Coco Crisp, Josh Reddick, Ryan Cook, Stephen Vogt (just to name a few) and All-Star Sean Doolittle, but the bearded closer won’t be ready for the opening of the season. If things are to just keep humming along then Vogt could be plenty busy. The A’s are all in on the veteran after dealing Jaso and Derek Norris.

Young says that pitchers A.J. Griffin and Jarrod Parker will not pitch in any spring training games, given that both are still recovering from arm injuries that shelved them for all of 2014. Instead, the pair will do all their spring work on the side with the hope that both will be up to speed and back on the roster by early June.

In their place, Scott Kazmir and Sonny Gray will anchor the A’s rotation with Jesse Chavez, Drew Pomeranz, Kendall Graveman, Jesse Hahn and Chris Bassitt expected to compete for the other three available spots.

Through it all, the expectations are the same. Young said as much when revealing his spring training regimen.

“We have a team that we think is going to win, and that is what we are going to expect from our guys,” he said.

“Everybody is overlooking us again with what the Angels and Mariners have done. But we got some great pieces in return for what we lost,” Reddick said.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Super Bowl XLIX the dumbest play; plus Amaury’s latest in baseball news

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

PHOENIX–With 26 seconds left on the clock the dumbest play I have ever seen in a Superbowl, as well as many millions, 114.4 million to be exact(a new SB record). At the end it was a great show overall, great half time, and this is exactly what the NFL needed this time. It has not been a good season for the NFL, with all the scandals, players arrested, domestic violence, but as pure entertainment, and that is what the Superbowl is all about, I have to give it a nine, out of a perfect ten score. The commercials this year, were not as great.

”I made the decision. I said, `Throw the ball,”’ coach Pete Carroll said. ”Nobody to blame but me.” We cannot criticize coach Carroll for speaking the truth. But we can definitely criticize him for his judgment at the time. Marshawn Lynch rushed 24 times for 102 yards and a touchdown and caught a 31-yard pass in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl 49 loss to the Patriots. However, he was not anyplace to be seen when with a few minutes remaining in the game, Wilson three the interception that sealed the defeat of the Seahwaks, and prevented them to repeat as Superbowl champions.

The call from coach Carroll towards the end of the game in regulation, was one of the worse I can remember in a Superbowl. Tom Brady who won the Most Valuable Player(as I predicted in a previous column)said after the victory “It’s been a long journey. It’s just a great win. We left it all on the field.” Brady, born San Mateo by winning his third MVP in a Superbowl ties his idol 49er great Joe Montana with four Super Bowl wins. “I was a huge fan of Joe Montana” says Brady. Marshawn Lynch who prior to the pass interception by Wilson the ball to the half-yard goal line said he was not surprised of the pass, in his words: “it is a team sport”. But deep inside everybody and their grandmother, have to be thinking that Lynch probably said “what then hell?”

Tom Brady is 37 years old, owns a bunch of NFL records, with no plans of retiring, there is little doubt that if he wins another Super Bowl, he will be considered the greatest quarterback ever in NFL history.

All clear: In Oakland, an investigation by the city’s Public Ethics Commission has found there was no violation of city election last year when Councilwoman Rebbeca Kaplan accepted two campaign contribution checks from Oakland A’s co-owner Lew Wolff… Miguel Tejada is now playing baseball in the Mexican Summer league with the Pericos de Puebla team, the ex-Athletics shortstop is 40 years old…All In: The Los Angeles Dodgers are having some drastic changes inside their Spanish broadcast, veteran play by play man Jaime Jarrin will continue in the Spanish radio booth(he has been there since the late 1950’s)and his son Jorge Jarrin, who during the past couple of years was doing the Dodgers Sports Telecast in Spanish will join Jaime on radio, while Pepe Yniguez, play by play radio, and Fernando Valenzuela, commentary radio, are moving from radio Spanish to do 150 Dodger games on Spanish television for Time Warner-Cable. Manny Mota will continue as commentator for 30 games on Spanish television, while Valenzuela will work the other 130 games… Anaheim: For the fifth year in a row the LA Angels will broadcast all home games from Angels Stadium on Fox Sports West/Spanish with José Mota, commentary and yours truly at play by play; this production airs in the LA area and also in Arizona and Nevada on other cable companies. I will also handle half of a 72 game home schedule in Spanish for the A’s on KIQI 1010AM radio(Bay Area) and three other affiliates on the network…SABR: Society for American Baseball Research held their 2015 annual meeting of the Lefty O’Doul San Francisco/Sacramento chapter at famous Ricky’ Bar and Sports Lounge in San Leandro, they have a group of members getting ready to travel to Cuba to watch baseball in the island…NBA: Will this be the second time the Warriors win a title? I was there as a sports reporter here in the Bay Area when they won their first and only championship during the 1974-75 season, it is about time for the Warriors, to go “all the way”, it has been 40 years, but the record for longer time without winning a Championship in the Bay Area still belongs to the World Champion Giants, they moved to San Francisco from New York in 1958 and won their first World Series in The City in 2010, if you are counting, that was 52 years…Dominican Republic: The Commissioner’s Office and the MLB Players Association jointly announced on Monday that they will partner with the United States government to focus on education in the Dominican Republic. The program, with the help of the U.S. Agency for International Development, will focus on education, supporting children with disabilities and combating domestic violence..Changing jobs: Omar Minaya ex-New York Mets General Manager left his job as Senior Vice President of the San Diego Padres, to become a special adviser to the Major League Baseball Players Association. Minaya, born in Dominican Republic, became the first ever Hispanic General Manager in Major League Baseball.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: MLB Commish wants to get A’s Stadium issue solved very soon; San Jose to appeal lawsuit in U.S. 9th Appeals Court

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–Jack London Square would be the ideal location for a new Oakland A’s Stadium as Major Baseball League Commissioner Rob Manfred said he would like to see the A’s get a new stadium in short order. The Jack London location would be the ideal location but as we know we don’t live in a perfect world. It’s not a surprise their not going to be in San Jose who just recently lost a lawsuit to Major League Baseball to obtain the right to move the A’s to San Jose and now the city is prepared to appeal the case in the U.S. 9th District of Appeals Court.

Oakland’s new mayor Mayor Libby Schaaf says she would entertain the idea of a new stadium for the A’s but also Schaff said that she will not allow one dime of public funds to be spent on the new stadium. To take this issue with San Jose further, San Jose is not even in the picture, so you have the choice of rebuilding the Coliseum which actually is an ideal or Jack London Square.

I was told years ago by the most unlikely source former A’s outfielder Rickey Henderson who came in the pressbox in Oakland and told me after I asked him about the problems in the Oakland Coliseum. Henderson said, “look man all they have to do is rebuild this place and make it look like it was before.” They built that cement monstrosity called Mount Davis in centerfield and that’s due to come down.

Maybe it should be named Rickey Henderson Park because Rickey was the first guy who told me that and that wasn’t a archaic idea but it makes a lot of sense. The A’s won’t be able to move out of Oakland, there’s not going to be any contraction in other words the A’s aren’t going to be dismantled. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred likes the idea of a new stadium in Oakland, the A’s aren’t going to relocate.

So what do you have? You have two locations the one now at the current Coliseum site, or possibly Jack London Square. Schaaf is optimistic I don’t blame her she wants to start off on the right foot and she wants to keep the A’s in Oakland. The City of Oakland is going to lose the Warriors that’s a given in a couple of years or so. The Raiders who knows, so the city of Oakland if it’s the Mayor or a politician are the best threat you have to keep the A’s they can also try and generate more revenue.

The A’s play 81 home games compare to 10 home games for the Raiders and 40 or so in basketball and now A’s owner Lew Wolf said that they would build a new park but they never said they would build it in Oakland. They said they would build it in San Jose or if they can’t they would rebuild the Oakland Coliseum or build at Jack London Square.

That’s Amaury’s News, Commentary& Podcast: Great stage set up for Super Bowl XLIX; also more baseball signings

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The NFC game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers was a super game for the upcoming Super Bowl and the Packers took the lead early and it looked like they were going to run all over the Seahawks but the Seahawks are reigning champions and they came back in a terrific game in overtime and they won it 28-22.

On the other side the AFC game was very boring it was a showcase for Bay Area native Tom Brady quarterback of the New England Patriots whose hero was former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana. Brady will be going onto his sixth Super Bowl and that’s a record and it’s going to be a great, great, Super Bowl and this one is going to be one of the best with Russell Wilson quarterbacking for the Seahawks who has a terrific defense.

The Patriots with Brady handled the Indianapolis Colts with that impressive 45-7 win on Sunday, the Colts have a young team with quarterback Andrew Luck and it seemed just like yesterday when Luck was throwing for the Stanford Cardinal. You can’t blame big crowds and being in enemy territory the Colts have a lot to learn. They’re still a young team and they still have a young quarterback.

Luck just was riding into a hot team the Patriots and with Brady who is entering his eighth post season and going into his sixth Super Bowl and is one of the best ever. Brady is the ultimate leader and in the NFL it would be hard to find a player that typifies the word leader. Brady is one of those guys. The Colts will be back, they have a good head coach, great young players, a fantastic organization but they just ran into a team that was is used to getting into post season and are experienced. Your facing a quarterback (Brady) that’s a future hall of famer and thats what the Colts ran into.

The Super Bowl has transcends sports if it wasn’t on a Sunday it would be declared an American Holiday because on Super Bowl Sunday everything stops they’re expecting the highest TV ratings ever for this Super Bowl as everybody gets together and watches the game on TV and this game is in a neutral city Phoenix. A TV spot for a Super Bowl commercial runs $3 million and this represents a terrific sport which the whole country is fascinated with.

It’s not only the Super Bowl itself that six days before the game will turn Phoenix into a party town and you can see Phoenix by the way will be the spring training home of half of Major League Baseball just next month. Your talking about 15 MLB teams there and then you have the Super Bowl in Phoenix it’s going to be a terrific it’s going to be a boon for the town.

That’s Amaury’s News, Commentary, & podcast: Sharks looking to gear up for a successful January; A’s pick up Zobrist & Escobar from Rays

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

SAN JOSE–The Anaheim Ducks continue to be the class of the NHL Pacific Division with their eight point lead over the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks. When the NHL season started this is basically the same team from last season with Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski, Joe Thornton, and Patrick Marleau. You know what is going to happen and I asked to do some TV work for Telemundo and the news director said, “call me when the Sharks make it to the playoffs” and I asked “how do you know they’re going to make it to the playoffs?”

We’ll see what happens the Sharks are 2-2 for the month of January and it’s a situation where anything can happen they dropped two key games by five goals to the St.Louis Blues this month not once but twice by scores of 7-2. Otherwise this is going to be a good year for San Jose at this point their 25-15-5 with 49 points. The team is set to play an outdoor game for Sat Feb 21 at Levis Stadium as part of the NHL Stadium Series hosting the Los Angeles Kings.

That game should get a lot of media coverage nationwide. It will be great to see that game outdoors it will be the first outdoor game in Sharks history. The Kings will be playing in their second outdoor game as they and the Anaheim Ducks played an outdoor game last season at Dodgers Stadium. This will be a historic moment to cover a game like that never in the history of Bay Area professional hockey has a game been played outdoors.

Zobrist and Escobar come to Oakland for Jaso: The Oakland A’s General manager Billy Beane never too shy to make a deal dealt catcher John Jaso and two minor leaguers to Tampa Bay for infielder Ben Zobrist and shortstop Yunel Escobar. Zobrist hit .272 with ten homers, and 52 RBIs last season for the Tampa Bay Rays. Escobar hit .258 with seven homers, 39 RBIs and 33 runs scored. Jaso hit .264 with nine homers, 40 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

Escobar is a very good shortstop, he’s an upgrade from Jed Lowrie and look for Escobar to be the everybody shortstop for the A’s looking at Zobrist he’s going to play every position. Zobrist can play in the infield and the outfield as well. So it looks like Beane strikes again these are not double A players these are two guys who step up and play the game. Circle the names on your scorecard Zobrist and Escobar will be big helpers for the A’s this coming season.

Now we can tell the A’s they have the left side of the infield safe with Brett Lawrie who will be the third baseman, Escobar will be the shortstop and Eric Sogard more than likely be the second baseman. Zobrist brings a lot of offensive production to the A’s line up this should be a good deal for the A’s as they seal the deal Saturday and it’s not quite enough to win the division for the A’s and they didn’t win it last year and the Angels won it with 98 wins. The A’s made the wild card and were eliminated in one game in Kansas City maybe that’s why Beane is making so many off season overhauls.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Havana Athletics?

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–As in previous articles I wrote that Cuba is the only country outside the US and Canada to ever have a professional baseball club in a regular league, affiliated with Major League Baseball. Until 1960 when Fidel Castro told John F. Kennedy, the US and the world in a speech: “Cuba will be a Marxist-Leninist state until the day I die”. The Havana Sugar Kings were one of the eight teams in the old International League until 1960.

That league also had teams in Toronto, Buffalo, Richmond, Rochester, Columbus, Miami and Montreal.
What would have to happen for Cuba in order to have another professional team, even maybe this time in the Major Leagues? For starters the most important thing they need totally new political leadership. There is only one boss in Cuba: the government. The people there are told what to do, what to say(or not to say)where to go to get their food allowance and so on.

Of course there is no infrastructure, no Major League quality stadium in place today, a flight from Miami to Havana is less than 30 minutes. My Aunt Violeta used to live in the US and used to visit my family in Cuba, and as I remember, she would travel via Ferry boat,(Miami-Havana-Miami) in which you could put your car, and then with a permit drive it in Havana or anyplace in Cuba.

The memo never arrived to the Castro’s, Fidel and Raúl, that communism has collapsed, that it doesn’t work, that even in China(who’s government is communist)they are big capitalist players in the whole world. For those of you old enough, you probably remember when Bob Hope used to make jokes about stuff that said: “Made in Japan”. Well that was decades ago. Today nobody makes fun of stuff made in Japan, as a matter of fact they are #1 with Toyota as the biggest car manufacturer in the world.

With China, same thing might happen, they are developing so fast and making stuff very cheap right now, with the world’s largest population. Hard not to see all the stuff we buy that says “Made in China”. But that could change in the future. Raúl Castro, who is now President, was made Chief of the Cuban Armed Forces, years ago when Fidel could think for himself, he was lucid and would make four to five hours speeches, so long that many in his own communist party, would fall asleep during his speeches.

Remember in 2013 the San Francisco 49ers “who have it better than us?” That slogan by then coach Jim Harbaugh, applies today to the rulers in Cuba. Fidel and Raúl and the two-thousand or so communist party rulers eat very well, can travel anyplace they wish, have nice homes, what embargo? There is no embargo for them. Two days after President Obama said that the US would lift the embargo, dozens of Cuban dissidents were arrested, some later released.

I was 16 and living in Cuba when Fidel made some of those speeches, I remember I had to go to bed to get up early in the morning to go to school, and I would listen to some of those speeches and really fell asleep. I really didn’t understand what communism was, to take from the rich to give to the poor and all that, redistribution of wealth, all that I knew is that the Havana Sugar Kings were no more, that things were changing, that one day Fidel abolished all pro-sports in the island.

While the top rulers of Cuba have all the privileges, and their is no blockade for them, they can get anything the want, the Cuban people have to live with food rationing and other goods rationing All that stuff that I heard Fidel in his speeches about all of Cuban being equal and nobody ruling over anybody, was a bunch of caca. In Cuba everybody is poor, and the government is rich.

One thing that keeps Cuban sane, is their great sense of humor, in or out of the island. I once read a cartoon in a Miami newspaper which read, that Fidel Castro was once making a speech, saying that no Cuban should go to bed hungry, then one little guy in the corner shouted “Fidel I go to bed hungry”, and then Fidel replied: “Well, then the solution is to stay awake, do not go to bed”. Cubans joked that Fidel Castro had a response to every criticism, of course he is always right and 11 millions Cubans are not.

As I remember today those hectic years(I lived through the revolution, Batista leaving Castro taking over)I didn’t understand much about politics, but I was really upset that I could not listen to the games on the radio when the Havana Sugar Kings played. Their games were heard in Cuba, that upset me the most. After 1960 the Havana Sugar Kings were gone! Eliminated, not because the Major League teams(who ran those affiliates in the International League) extracted the team from the league, but because the Cuban government made the decision to eradicate all professional sports, including baseball, always the most popular in the island.

We had dictators in Cuba prior to Castro, but they never “nationalized” or took baseball away from us, Cuba always had professional sports, even before the Castro’s were born. I want to make this point very clear, the Havana Sugar Kings were not taken away from the International League by that league, or by the Major League teams, but by a final decision by the radical Cuban government.

The current government could have said many years ago (and made the first move) that they wanted to re-establish relations with the United States, and-in return- they would open up Cuba to the rest of the world. But they never said that. Some people come to me and tell me “so and so is in Cuba” like this was a great tremendous achievement, when in fact, if you are a US citizen and have a US Passport you can fly to Cuba from Mexico, Canada, Spain and many other countries. There is nothing heroic about going to Cuba, neither is it to see the caliber of baseball in that country, which after the USA was the best in the world decades prior to the Castro’s.

So maybe destiny will have the Oakland Athletics moving to La Habana, Cuba in 2020, but then again the Giants might claim Cuba as part of their territorial rights, after all the hated Brooklyn Dodgers trained in Havana in the spring of 1947, the historic year when Jackie Robinson was about the break the color barrier and the end of the Negro Leagues was at hand. However, in 2020 Cuba might still have the ball, they have never initiated anything, with such arrogance they like to tell the world that they have beaten the US and the embargo, when in fact they have actually beaten themselves, destroyed a country that until 1960(you can research this it is documented) was one of the most advanced countries in all of Latin America.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary with podcast: Rams taking a look at moving back to L.A. and so are the Raiders

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–A couple of years ago I saw the plans for the new football stadium in downtown Los Angeles and I’m sure their going to build it but I don’t know if the Raiders are going to go there. The Raiders have considered moving back to L.A. they do have more fans there than they do in Oakland. Mind you the L.A. area is a huge area so you can draw more people and the have twice as many people down there as they do here in the Bay Area.

As far as the poor conditions of the Oakland Coliseum I sympathize with Raiders owner Mark Davis and if I was him I would be looking for a new facility it’s no secret the Oakland A’s play there for six months for 81 games and their looking for another place and everyone knows they want to move to San Jose. So why not the Raiders? For a football fan it’s not as bad because you only play ten games at home compared to 81 games for the A’s.

It’s conceivable for a Raiders fan who can fly to L.A. for the weekend and stay their not going to follow the team all over the country. It’s not that bad for a football fan compared to a baseball fan if they lose the team. That’s what people don’t talk about, if you have money to go to the NFL you can go on a plane from Oakland to Los Angeles and watch your team because you take your family and friends and make a weekend out of it.

So it’s very possible that it could happen and I would not be surprised if the Raiders are the team going down to the Southland. I know their going to build sooner or later a brand new downtown stadium in L.A. for most likely the Rams. The TV market is a huge market and it’s only number two to New York. It’s just a matter of time that they build a park and I saw the proposed sketching of the park years ago and yes it will be there by Figueroa Street right next to the Staples Center.

They probably will have to close the whole area down and right across the street from the Staples Center is a huge plaza that has LA Live that they do TV and radio broadcasting. They will close a couple streets down in the area on Saturday and Sundays and if they build a stadium and an NFL team goes back to LA I’m sure the whole area will be closed. Even in the football season when there is no basketball the Staples Center is busy everyday, you always have some event there.

There’s the ice show, RV Show, the circus, concerts there is always something going on at Staples Center and in basketball season when the Lakers are on the road the Clippers are home and vice versa. The Staples Center is one of the busiest places in the country there’s always something going on. There are only two or three days a year that they don’t have anything scheduled. They do maintenance those two or three days.

It’s very likely that the Raiders could leave Oakland and move to L.A. that would make a lot of sense especially the Raiders by the time they conclude the time is right they can head to L.A. that would be the perfect fit if he Raiders can go down to L.A.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: California’s Golden age of baseball teams

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–Four of the five California major league teams made it to the playoffs in 2014, that is a first. If all California teams were in a “California Division” this is the way they would have finished last season (prior to playoffs) 1-Angels 98-64, 2-Dodgers 94-68, 3-Athletics 88-74, 3-Giants 88-74, 4-Padres 77-85. The San Diego Padres were the only California team that did not advanced to the postseason. Is this California’s golden age for baseball? A strong case can be made, especially during the past few seasons, since the balance has shifted from the East to the West in both leagues.

How about World Series winners for our California teams? The Dodgers are still on top, with a total of five World Series championships, followed by the Athletics with four, the Giants with three, the Angels with one, and the Padres, still searching for their first. It took the Los Angeles Dodgers only two seasons to win their first World Series championship, after playing in Los Angeles for the first time in 1958, they won it in 1959. For the Oakland Athletics, who moved from Kansas City to Oakland in 1968, they did in five years as they won their first of four in 1972. For the Los Angeles Angels, who were born in LA in 1961, it took them 41 years to reach the top, when they won it in 2002, while for the San Francisco Giants, who moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958, it took them 52 years to win it for the first time, in 2010.

How about periods of dominance? The Oakland Athletics won three consecutive World Series, 1972,1973 and 1974, that’s three in three consecutive seasons and is the only team to accomplish such dynasty in California. The Los Angeles Dodgers won three World Series in a span of seven years, 1959, 1963 and 1965. And the Giants have won three World Series in a span of five years, 2010, 2012, and 2014. The Oakland Athletics became the first team in the expansion era to win three consecutive titles, led by a pitching staff of Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, Ken Holtzman and Blue Moon Odom. Their offense was also one of the best in baseball, led by a young Reginaldo Martínez Jackson(Reggie). Of course you can throw the word “dynasty”all over the place in a very subjective matter, but nobody has been close to the New York Yankees in that regard, not only because they have won 27 World Series, most in history, but because they ruled baseball in various different decades.

Loading and Unloading for 2015:

Four of the five California teams, were extremely active in the recent Winter Meeting held in San Diego. The reigning champs San Francisco Giants were mostly the “spectators” here in the west. The Giants still could use another experienced starter, since nobody knows what Tim Lincecum is bringing in 2015. They will need a very healthy and effective Matt Cain, coming off surgery, and Superman MadBum at his best, plus another right handed bat, preferably an outfielder.

This off season(to date)the Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres were the most active. For starters, The San Diego Padres will have a brand new outfield with Matt Kemp, Wil Myers and Justin Upton, among other new players, while the Los Angeles Dodgers have a new double-play combination, at shortstop with Jimmy Rollins and second base with Howie Kendrick. The Dodgers still have the best pitching rotation in the west with the three-headed-monster of Clayton “All World”Kershaw, Zack Greinke, who is actually a #1 in most places, except with the Dodgers, and Korean Hyun-Jin Ryu.

The Oakland Athletics, no strangers to dealing in the off season, did a lot of remodeling, or cleaning house if you wish,or retooling(a much more politically correct word) with starters Jon Lester, Jeff Samardzija, reliever Eric Gregerson, first baseman Brandon Moss, shortstop Jed Lowrie and third baseman Josh Donaldson all gone in trades mostly for young talent, and some(in the case of Josh Donaldson to Toronto) in return they received third baseman Brett Lawrie. who although prone to injury while in Toronto, still an accomplished major league player.Veteran infielder/utility Alberto Callaspo was also send packing, plus Derek Norris their All Star catcher last year went bye-bye.

Hard to doubt General Manager Billy Beane, since he always seems to have “the magic touch”, getting veteran players that do not produce anyplace else to produce at Oakland, as well as unknown young talent beginning to make a name for themselves. Beane still might have a couple of deals left, before pitcher and catchers report to Mesa, Arizona and their new Spring Training facility in the middle of February.

It is just very hard for A’s fans to keep up with the incoming and outgoing players every winter. If you are an A’s fan, just buy the Oakland Athletics Jersey (plain )without name and number, and then you can buy the names and numbers as they come, and just attached to the back. However, if you are a real nostalgia fan, you can still buy all the old stuff you need.

Some 50 days, remain in the calendar until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training camps in Arizona and Florida.
