That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Baseball–The Cellar is only good for wine

BASEBALL: The Cellar is only good for wine.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

OAKLAND–As Spring Training got under way last week for the Oakland Athletics in Mesa one of the first quotes was given by A’s manager Bob Melvin, when he basically said he doesn’t mind people calling his team underdogs. And he is absolutely correct.

The Athletics last season finished with a 69-93 record in the cellar of the American League West. This was the second consecutive year they have finished last. According to the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook the Oakland Athletics are 100-1 odds to win the 2017 World Series. Not a bad idea to put $20 on the A’s and if Melvin can perform the miracle you will receive a very nice dividend. For the record the rest of the teams in the division:     LA Angels also 100-1, Seattle 25-1, Texas 16-1 and Houston 12-1. While the Chicago Cubs remain on top of the baseball world, they are picked 7-2 to repeat as World Champions. This same sportsbook picked the Cubs last season to win it all.

For the Oakland Athletics this season is much more than winning, as a matter of fact the biggest win for the A’s would be if they can ink the deal to build a new ballpark in Oakland. For that mission, new team President David Kaval came on board and has told us that we will know this year, which is already of itself good news, because years and years are gone-by and nothing, nada has happened.

A new ballpark is the most important thing for this franchise at this time and point in their history. It would re-energize the fan base, create an aura of positivism, potentially new revenue which could result on bringing new star players and most importantly “keeping them here for more than a couple of years”. That is what the fans want, of course winning a World Series this year would be the only bigger story than building a new home for the team. Mr Kaval has also promissed to make the Oakland Coliseum more friendly so that A’s fans would have a better experience.

Some familiar faces of the past are back with the A’s: Rajai Davis, Adam Rosales and Santiago Casilla. This trio could contribute greatly in the hopes that the Athletics could improve to maybe a .500 ballclub. But in my opinion the key for a successful 2017 will be their young and talented pitching staff, it all begins with pitching and the young A’s are no exception. Sonny Gray has to re-establish himself as what he is, a Numero Uno in the rotation, he had a negative record last year, Gray was hurt and never really got-it-going. Young but inexperienced arms like Sean Manaea, Kendall Graveman, Jahrel Cotton, plus Andrew Triggs and Frankie Mantos are an intriguing rotation, with a solid and much experienced bullpen. John Axford, Sean Doolittle, Liam Hendriks,Madson and Santiago Casilla, most capable of closing and others make the bullpen a deeper one than last season.

Santiago Casilla returns to his first team in the major leagues. Most maligned last year because of his lack of success closing for the Giants in the second half, he still saved 31 games and from 2010 to last season a total of 123 games for the Giants. Casilla also brings three World Series rings to the east bay. He became the ‘punching bag’for Giants fans and many in the media. Truth-be-said, the Giants were the best team in baseball in the first half and the worse in the second half. The superstar of that team, Buster Posey hit just three home runs in the second half, but few even mention him for the ills of that team, it was Santiago Casilla that paid for the broken dishes.

Rajai Davis is a popular player who also brings a ring this season as he played in the World Series with the Cleveland Indians, his ring is for a League Championship. Both teams that make it to the World Series are assured of rings, the difference one ring would say World Champion the other one AL/NL Champion. Rajai Davis was #1 in the American League in stolen bases last season with 43. He is now a veteran on his 12th season and he is 36 years old, but he seems to keep himself always in very good physical shape and should help the Athletics.

Adam Rosales is one of the hardest working guys in the big leagues, a type of player that all teams need during the long season, a journeyman that can play many positions. He is always one of the first players to arrive at the park for a game, wherever he has played he has always played with passion, dedication and hard work. When he previously played with the A’s I went with him to an Athletics Boosters Club luncheon and he loved mixing with the fans and talking baseball, always with a smile. Here is a player which great attitude is a great asset to him and one of the reasons he still playing in the major leagues.

Although these are not three high paid superstars acquisitions, Rajai Davis, Santiago Casilla and Adam Rosales. They are committed players who will bring their brand of baseball to Rickey Henderson Field in 2017.

Soon I will be talking to some of these and other players at their Spring Training home in Arizona and will have more news from the Oakland Athletics.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Kaval considered face of the A’s; open door policy; names Coliseum after Rickey; plus the latest with the Giants

FILE – In this Nov. 17, 2016, file photo, Oakland Athletics President David Kaval gestures during a news conference in Oakland, Calif. TheAthletics will be phased out of revenue sharing in the coming years as part of baseball’s new labor deal, and that puts even more urgency on the small-budget franchise’s plan to find the right spot soon to build a new, privately funded ballpark. Kaval, named to his new A’s leadership position last month, is committed to making quick progress but also doing this right. That means strong communication with city and civic leaders as well as the community and fan base. (AP Photo/Ben Margot, File)

David Kaval is basically the new president for the Oakland A’s and he’s the new face for the A’s and also manager Bob Melvin, Kaval is a young guy in his early 40s he worked to build a new stadium for the MLS San Jose Earthquakes. It’s a beautiful park located next to San Jose International Airport. Kaval’s main mission with the Oakland A’s he told me is to build a new park some place in Oakland. Kaval will accomplish that, the A’s have been talking to the civic leaders.

Oakland won’t have to worry about the Warriors their going to be leaving for San Francisco. The Raiders who knows where their going to be playing. The A’s have to carve their own future and it’s going to be in Oakland but he’s the face of the franchise right now although he’s the president and Billy Beane is the general manager who oversees all the trades. Lew Wolf whose still part owner stepped down from being the managing partner.

 COMMENTARY:

The United States has never won the WBC, however they do have an excellent roster this season, the Dominican Republic will be defending their title in 2013.and are the favorites to repeat, Puerto Rico, has a very strong team and Mexico could be very tough with their pitching. Cuba is the wild card, as well as Japan(their players are not well known in the US, but should never count them out). Cuba does not allows defectors to play in the WBC, Yoenis Cespedes(Mets)who played for Cuba in 2009 (before defecting)will not be able to play, as well as all Cubans in MLB rosters, his younger brotherYoelkis(19) will be playing for the Cuban team. Recently Japan has not sent many of their stars to the United States, and most of their roster in this classic are well known players only in the Japanese leagues.

 NEXT: SPRING TRAINING

Most clubs open their Spring Training Camps next week in Arizona, the Cactus League, 15 teams including Oakland Athletics in Mesa and San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale. The other 15 teams train in Florida, the Grapefruit League. Some players on major league rosters, who are playing at the WBC will report late to this year;s Spring Training.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Q & A with Oakland A’s team president Dave Kaval

New Oakland Athletics President Dave Kaval holds his first open office hours, speaking to Saint Mary’s College sophomores Michael Doran, left, and Ryan Mitchell, center, both 19 and longtime A’s fans, at the Oakland Coliseum on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, in Oakland, Calif. (AP Photo/Janie McCauley)

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–About 15,000 people attended the Oakland Athletics 2017 Fan fest this past Sunday which is approximately the average crowd they have drawn during a whole season for the past few years.

As Vice President of The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, I attended the Fan Fest and had a tent/booth for the museum. We were right next to another non-profit, Tony LaRussa’s ARF(Animal Rescue Foundation) fun fact LaRussa and I are born on the same exact date and year.  As every year, at this time I met and chatted with many many folks, including those that listen to A’s Spanish radio. Many of the questions for the new A’s President were the ones that I heard from the fans.

Mr. Kaval came to our tent/booth at the Fan Fest and I had a chance of doing an informal interview.

Q; What do you think of the crowd?

Kaval: “Great, a great crowd on a beautiful day”.

Q: Many fans asked me about what is the news of a new ballpark for the A’s?

Kaval: We will know soon and make an announcement, we are considering different sites”.

Q: Why not the same Coliseum, it has great accessibility, BART on the east side of the Coliseum and Highway 880 on the west side, why not building a new park right there?

Kaval: “That is a possibility, especially if the Raiders (who we want to stay at Oakland) it’s a good thing to have the Raiders stay but if they happen to leave, maybe that area could be turned into a new ballpark for the Athletics”.

Q: The situation about players staying with the A’s is always a case for all fans, many asked me that although they like the A’s it is tough because they trade all the good players.

Kaval: “Well, if we build a new park things will change we will have a situation where we would be able to keep all the players that we all love”.

Q: Is Sony Gray going to be traded?

Kaval: “I like to have Sonny Gray with us for the near future and maybe like for the next ten years”.

David Kaval was speaking to a group of fans in front of The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame who asked him: ‘Would we be able to keep our same position as last year for out tailgate parties?

Kaval: “I do not see why not”.

Fans: We would love to have you to visit us….

Kaval”: Sure where will you be?

After the fans told Kaval their location for their tailgate parties, they asked him, what do you like to eat?

Kaval: “What do you have?

Fans: Anything you want…sausage, tri tip, burger, you name it”.

Kaval: “I love tri tip, so I will be there”.

Fans: You got it!.

David Kaval was friendly and engaged with the fans as he walked around during a sunny and very nice afternoon at Jack London Square.

The day before, Friday, the Oakland A’s had their First Pitch Luncheon at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Oakland. This is a yearly affair where the A’s invite their sponsors and most players show up to mingle with the fans. Question were also asked from the audience after the luncheon, and mostly were geared to the “new ballpark”. Ken Korach introduced all the A’s announcers, but forgot to introduce yours truly and it was a front office employee who stood up as he grabbed the mic that was passed from table to table to say: “we also have here today the Spanish play by play announcer of the Oakland A’s, Amaurty Pi-Gonzalez”.

They forgot about me, and Korach apologize for that oversight. This is not the first time it happened, but I have been in this business way too long to get all worked-up about such things. I feel I am blessed to keep working and doing what I like, since 1977, when Charlie O. Finley told me: “Amaury, you can broadcast in Mexican”.

Mr Finely (RIP) thought that Mexican was a language, which it is not, it is a nationality, the language is called Spanish. But those are the things I have seen and heard over almost 40 years in this business. So nothing surprises me anymore. Although it might surprise some of the readers if I would start to list them. I expressed my opinion to the new Athletics President David Kaval, about the biggest issue that confronts him and his franchise, the construction of a new ballpark in Oakland.

I told him that they already have the location, it is right where the Oakland Coliseum sits today, and they could built a brand new ballpark right there, the only problem is that that area is an industrial section of Oakland, and the common denominator in new baseball parks is that they are built in downtown areas or places where there is an infrastructure, restaurants, theaters, all kind of places where people could also go and spend a whole day there after watching a ballgame.

Unlike the 2016 Fan fest which took place at the Oakland Coliseum and it rained and rained and rained, this time it was a marvelous day at Jack London Square and it seemed fans had a great time, and that is what it is all about, that is why it is called “Fan Fest”.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: A’s Annual Fan Fest is held at Jack London Square, a good time was had by all

Oakland Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt, right, and pitcher John Axford, far right, sign autographs for fans during the annual Oakland A’s FanFest at Jack London Square in Oakland, Calif., on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group

By Jerry Feitelberg and Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND- The A’s held their annual fan fest at Jack London Square in Oakland for the first time since 1999. The A’s, with new team president, Dave Kaval, made the fans in attendance hoping that they would see a turnaround similar to the one that took place in 2011 when Joe Lacob and Peter Guber took control over the Warriors.

Attendance at the event was about 15,00, and the A’s did not charge anything to be there. There were food trucks, and the fans were able to stuff their faces for free. There was, without any doubt, a lot of goodwill toward the fans. The fans are hoping that the front office won’t trade away the best players for prospects and that the team will be playoff contenders again. General Manager David Forst told the throng that he wants to have ace pitcher, Sonny Gray, be with the team for the next 10 years. The fans are holding their collective breaths on that statement.

New team President, Dave Kaval said the team will make an announcement regarding a stadium within the next year. The three options under consideration are the Oakland Coliseum if and when the Raiders decide to go to Las Vegas. The second option is at Laney College, and the number three is Howard Terminal. Kaval stated that the A’s are evaluating transportation options at ll three sites. Oakland Mayor, Libby Schaaf, is a huge proponent of the Howard Terminal location.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Tribute to Bill King at Perry’s In San Francisco

pinterest.com photo: Newly inducted Hall of Famer Bill King at the mic in 1974 circa photo

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

SAN FRANCISCO– On Wednesday afternoon, a bevy of Bay Area sports personalities, past and present attended a well deserved tribute to Bill King, to celebrate his induction this year into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York. The recipient of the Ford C.Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting. Owners, broadcasters, writers, producers, radio engineers, scouts, in general, people in the business who worked and knew Bill King.

Hosted by the inimitable Andy Dolich, (Marketing Guru), Master of Ceremonies and the best ownership in Bay Area history, Athletics Wally Haas and Roy Eisenhardt, they were all there, together with Ken Korach current voice for the Oakland Athletics as well as Ford C. Frick Award winner Jon Miller, Voice of the San Francisco Giants, who before joining the Giants was a play by play man for the Athletics.

Roy Eisenhardt, who told me he is teaching law these days, described Bill King as a man that would “paint a picture “of a baseball game that you, by listening to him on the radio, could basically see the game in your head. It was that Athletics ownership that hired Bill King and also Lon Simmons. In my opinion that was the best broadcast team in Bay Area history. Two number one announcers working side by side. Both are in the Hall of Fame and both are Bay Area institutions. The Bay Area never had two Hall of Fame announcers working in the same booth and for the same team. That has never happened.

Broadcasters, executives, writers alike were rubbing elbows. Like Hank Greenwald (another Bay Area legend) and his son also broadcaster Doug Greenwald, Ted Robinson, Barry Tompkins, Lowell Cohn, Dave Newhouse, Pat Gallagher, Rich Walcoff, Gary Hughes, Debbie Gallas.,among others. Perry Butler the owner of Perry’s at Union Street, since 1969 a very popular San Francisco spot, himself a huge sports fan, was enjoying the tribute to the one and only Bill King.

I remember many years ago writing a story for El Mundo News of Oakland about Bill King, in which I described that listening to Bill doing the play by play of the Golden State Warriors on the radio, was a lot better than watching the game on television. The “Holy Toledo” man was one-of-a-kind. I gave him a copy of my article (in Spanish) and framed it and presented it to Bill and basically told him what I was writing about. He loved it. He was always very inquisitive and wanted to get involved with everything he took interest with. If he asked me how to pronounce a players last name that was Spanish, I told him and he always wanted to know more about each player.

It is about time that Bill King won the Ford C. Frick Award. Like I told his daughter, it was a pleasure and something I had to do, when he was nominated to ask my friends Jaime Jarrin (Dodgers Spanish announcer) and Rafael (Felo) Ramirez(Marlins Spanish announcer), both whom I have worked with during postseason for Latin American networks, and urged them to vote for Bill King, they did.  Jarrin and Ramirez are the only two living Spanish speaking Major League Baseball announcers that have also won the Ford C.Frick Award. The other was the legendary pioneer Eloy “Buck” Canel, who used to be the anchor for “Cavalgata Deportiva Gillette” (Gillette Cavalcade of Sports) which originated from the NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Canel was also the Voice in Spanish for the New York Yankees and for many World Series for millions of radio listeners in Latin America.

Andy Dolich was right when he said that Bill King should also be in the Basketball and Football Hall of Fame. The Bay Area never had a much versatile announcer than King. He was at the same time the voice for the A’s, Raiders and Warriors, and -trust me- he preferred radio over television. Ken Korach who wrote the excellent book, Holy Toledo:Lessons from Bill King, Renaissance Man of the Mic, share anecdotes about working with Bill King. Wally Haas told me he is involved in running a non-profit for inner city kids. There has never been a more humble and decent owner in Bay Area Sports than Wally Haas, and his late father Walter Haas, they brought pride to Oakland, a winning attitude and great years of baseball.

During the late 1980’s championship years they drew much better than their cross bay rivals San Francisco Giants, who were then dying at the gate at maligned Candlestick Park. Last time I saw Bill King, the Athletics were playing the last weekend of the regular season at SAFECO Field in Seattle(2005) Bill King and Ken Korach were calling the game and I was two booths to their right doing the same in Spanish language. I remember I asked Bill what was he doing in the off season, he told me he was going to have hip replacement. About three weeks later I learned he has died of some kind of after-surgery complications, at a hospital in San Leandro

Remembering Bill King’s life, was quite an event and on the first day without rain in the Bay Area, and Holy Toledo! the skies opened up and where clear for the great erudite broadcaster.

Kudos to Andy Dolich and the Haas and Eisenhardt ownership of the Oakland Athletics for this very emotive event.

Amaury Pi-Gonzalez was broadcasting the Oakland Athletics in Spanish, when the Haas family bought the team from Charlie O. Finley in 1980.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, & Commentary: MLB Hispanic Heritage Museum to appear at A’s Fan Fest

bing images photo: Major League Baseball Hispanic Heritage Museum logo

It’s important that the Major League Baseball Hispanic Heritage Museum will be making it’s appearance at the Oakland A’s Fan Fest this month at Jack London Square in downtown Oakland. The A’s had finished in last place they’re trying to recoup fans they haven’t done a lot in the off season. The A’s have kept Sonny Gray and Stephen Vogt so far two All-Stars a number one pitcher and the former catcher of the Detroit Tigers.

They both could have been traded and the A’s need to get a good first step to start the season and it’s important that the Hispanic Baseball Museum appears at the Fan Fest it is a marketer’s dream that the A’s have people already thinking about baseball which it starts next month and a couple weeks. You also have the NBA and NHL seasons still going on too.

Amaury Pi Gonzalez will be hosting at the Major League Baseball Hispanic Heritage Museum at the Oakland A’s Fan Fest listen to the podcast right here at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Rickey and Rajai back together; Man of Steal reunited with 2016 AL theft leader

photo from en.wikipedia.org: Rajai Davis (11) during his Oakland A’s days taking a hack at the plate will return for the 2017 season to the tune of $6 million

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–The Oakland Athletics signed Rajai Davis to a one-year $6 million contract and he will be back patrolling centerfield at the spacious Coliseum. A’s fans are happy, he is a popular player and left very good memories, last time he play here.

Rajai played for the Athletics in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2010 he sole 50 bases, becoming the first Athletic to steal that many since the “Man of Steal” Rickey Henderson in 1998 when he stole 66 bags. During those three seasons at Oakland, Rajai stole a total of 115 bases, and last year with 43 steals for the American League Champion Cleveland Indians led the American League. He is a great guy to have in the clubhouse and a very humble but hard-working player. Last World Series, his last at bat of the season came in the eight inning of game seven, a game tying two-run homer against Aroldis (103mph) Chapman of the World Champion Chicago Cubs whose now a Yankee. Rajai said goodbye to 2016 in style.

Nobody since Rickey Henderson has come close to be a total blur on the base paths for the A’s. l remember Rickey as a rookie in 1979 with the green and gold. He was part of that famous outfield together with Dwayne Murphy in centerfield and Tony Armas in right field. I remember when Rajai first came to the Athletics in 2008, Rickey was very happy to see a fleet-footed player like Davis. I remember talking to Rickey during Spring Training in Arizona. He always likes to coach players that are fast and always a threat to steal. I am sure Rickey is happy to see Rajai again, and will be working with him this spring again in Arizona.

Rajai’s brother is a missionary spreading Christianity around the world, I had the pleasure of meeting him years ago. Rajai Davis is one of those guys that seems to have a smile on his face when he comes to the park, he works hard, but also has fun playing, a positive attitude he always maintains, and that is good in any sport at any level. The mental part of baseball is extremely important, long season, long trips, ups and downs. But Rajai Davis always seems to manage the ‘high and the lows ‘of the long summer.

Always happy to talk to the media, to mingle with the fans. This was a good idea by A’s management, to bring him back, at the same time resolving their centerfield situation.

One brief anecdote about Hall of Fame member Rickey Henderson. I remember I used to tape promos for him, for Spanish radio. No, he doesn’t speak Spanish, but every season in Spring Training I would write in a 3X5 card something like “Hola, yo soy Rickey Henderson, escuche los juegos de los Atleticos en Espanol en ___radio” Hello, this is Rickey Henderson, listen to the A’s games in Spanish on___radio”. He would take that 3 by 5 card and rehearse for a few minutes, with my coaching, reading it a few times…then he would tell me: “OK chief, I’m ready” and then we taped it. Quite a guy Rickey, looks like he can still play today and at 58 he still looks great.

It will be fun in a couple of months to see Rajai Davis listening to Rickey Henderson in Spring Training, about the stealing technique and all that good baseball stuff. After all Rickey Henderson is the only man on earth than can say he played for 25 years in the major leagues and stole 1,406 bases.

Bienvenido a la bahia otra vez Rajai! Welcome to bay again Rajai!

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: Theismann rips Kaepernick; Should 49ers York step down?; the A’s welcome back Rajai Davis

Topics on That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary’s podcast

Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann in criticizing San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick for taking a knee during the national anthem during the 2016 season. Theismann said of Kaepernick that while he has a right to protest the national anthem he should not do that in the work place.

Also Amaury talks about 49ers owner Jed York and if it’s time for him to step down or move aside for someone who can make the right football decisions from the president’s office. York said team president Al Guido was making the football decisions but he’s been handling the business sid former general manager Trent Baalke was handling those football decisions and we know what happened there.

Rajai Davis is back in an A’s uniform. Davis who led the American League in stolen bases with 43 and hit 18 home runs is back with his old team. Davis was a very liked clubhouse guy and a veteran who will make $6 million for coming back for the 2017 season. A’s manager Bob Melvin knows that Davis is a experienced player and can be a good role model for the younger players in the clubhouse. Davis played in the post season with Cleveland and also formerly played with the San Francisco Giants. Davis also has a great relationship with the press in the Bay Area.

Raiders try to wrap up AFC West title in Denver without Derek Carr in regular season finale

Sports Radio Service Writer

OAKLAND, Calif — With a playoff spot already in their back pocket, the Raiders have a chance to clinch the AFC West title with a win in Denver (or a Kansas City loss in San Diego) Sunday at 1:25 p.m. to close out the 2016 regular season at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

But the 12-3 Raiders are going to have to go out and win the division (and the AFC’s No. 2 seed) without franchise quarterback and MVP candidate Derek Carr. Carr fractured his right fibula during Oakland’s 33-25 win over the visiting Indianapolis Colts in Week 16 on Christmas Eve.

The third-year quarterback completed 21-of-31 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns before being helped off the field following a sack by Colts defensive end Trent Cole in the third quarter. Carr’s leg got stuck in the Oakland Coliseum turf as Cole spun Carr around, fracturing his right fibula. On the season, Carr passed for 3,933 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.

The loss of Carr is devastating for the Silver and Black as they embark on their first postseason appearance since 2002, but Carr’s backup Matt McGloin is a guy that is ready for the challenge of leading a very talented team.

“I feel great,” McGloin said this week via CBSSports.com. “I know this team, these guys around me, this staff and this organization will do a great job of helping me out, embracing me, and making sure we keep moving in the right direction.”

McGloin, who threw for 1,547 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions in six starts for Oakland in 2013, will have the same offensive unit that took down the Broncos 30-20 in Week 9 in front of the country on NBC’s Sunday Night Football in the first matchup.

In his career, McGloin has thrown for 1,847 yards with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 58.3 percent of his passes.

Starting running back Latavius Murray bludgeoned one of the league’s best defenses on 20 carries for 114 yards and three touchdowns that night in front of a sold out Raider Nation crowd at the Oakland Coliseum.

Rookie running back DeAndre Washington had career-day against the Colts, carrying the ball 12 times for a career-high 99 yards and two touchdowns, both for 22-yard scores that capped off four straight touchdowns for Oakland.

The tandem of Amari Cooper (78 catches, 1,110 yards, 4 TDs) and Michael Crabtree (84 catches, 956 yards, 8 TDs) are great weapons for the former Penn State quarterback to throw to.

Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio believes in the closeness of his team and the coaches.

“We’ve got a good group of guys and a good group of men and a good group of coaches and players,” Del Rio said via CBSSports.com “who are going to work hard to put together a good plan, and we go out and expect to win.”

Denver (8-7), who will miss the playoffs this year after winning the Super Bowl last year, is coming off a 33-10 loss to Kansas City (11-4) on Christmas Night at frigid and rainy Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City racked up 484 yards of total offense and held a 21-7 lead in the first quarter against the once vaunted Broncos defense, highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown run by rookie speedster Tyreek Hill and an 80-yard catch-and-run score by tight end Travis Kelce.

Both Hill and Kelce were named to the AFC Pro Bowl team as starters with Hill being named as a return specialist for his first selection of his career.

Hill, who has superb hands is second on the Chiefs with 56 catches for 547 yards and six touchdowns, has 497 yards on 38 returns including a 78-yard punt return for a score against Oakland in a 21-13 victory on Dec. 9 in Kansas City.

Hill also has an 86-yard kickoff return for touchdown that helped Kansas City take the Broncos in overtime,  30-27, in Denver on Nov. 27.

Kelce earned his second-straight Pro Bowl nod by having another impressive year for Kansas City  with 84 catches for 1,117 yards and four touchdowns.

The playoff-bound Chiefs are hoping that Denver can knock off Oakland because a Raider loss would give Kansas City the No. 2 seed and the first-round bye, and knock Oakland to the No. 5 seed where they would open the playoffs on the road in either Pittsburgh or Houston on Wildcard Weekend.

But the Raiders have shown that they can win on the road this season going 6-1 (well 7-1 if you count playing in Mexico City that was technically considered a Raider “home” game), but that was with Carr under center, not McGloin.

Second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian has surpassed the 3,000-yard passing mark for the first time in his career with 3,195 yards, but has engineered a Broncos offense that scores just 20.6 points per game, 20th in the league.

Siemian has thrown for 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions with a 83.9 passer rating.

But according to Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak, Siemian will share some snaps this Sunday with former  first round draft pick Paxton Lynch.

“I think Trevor deserves the right to go back out there as a starter,” Kubiak said via the Denver Post. “He’s done a lot of good things this year. He’s a young player that needs to keep going.

“I want him to get the Kansas City taste out of his mouth. It was a tough outing. Paxton is also going to play. I’m preparing both and you’ll see them both in the game.”

Just like Oakland, Denver have a premiere wide receiving corps with Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders leading the way.

Thomas leads the team with 86 catches for 1,036 yards and Sanders is second with 79 catches for 1,032 yards.

Both are tied for the team lead with five touchdowns a piece.

After starting the season 7-3, Denver is just 1-4 since.

Oakland won last season’s game in Denver on Dec. 13, 15-12, behind the dominate performance of defensive end Khalil Mack who tied a franchise-mark with five sacks off former Broncos quarterback now Houston Texas  high-priced backup, Brock Osweiler that day.
