49ers’ Future Begins to Shape Out on Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The San Francisco 49ers kick-off their pre-season schedule this Sunday against the Houston Texans. The contest will give everyone a first look at the new Chip Kelly style offense and how the 49ers’ might shape up this season. After a 5-11 season, and more key positional losses for the Niners’, expectations remain extremely low for this team, but a new revival offensive look could be this teams savior.

If however, sparks don’t fly for the red and gold, fans should expect another long and painful season that will affect the pocketbook of Jed York, with an empty $1.2 billion stadium for years to come.

Sunday revives the quarterback battle in Santa Clara as well, Blaine Gabbert has taken the edge and has been named the starter for Sunday. Colin Kaepernick was struggling with pain in his shoulder on Thursday, forcing Kelly to make the decision. Even if the pain in his shoulder, Kaepernick is expected to see some first team snaps.

Many think that Kelly could be the coach that revives Kaepernick’s career, but the one-time NFC champion needs to beat Gabbert, who’s on pace to revive his career after a dreadful start in Jacksonville. This most recent shoulder doesn’t help Kaepernick’s chances either.

Houston is coming off a 9-7 record and an AFC South Championship. In the offseason, Houston went and spent big money for a quarterback, bringing in the backup from the Super Bowl Champion, Denver Broncos.

Brock Osweiler signed a four-year $72 million contract in the offseason, as the Texans hope he can be the answer to the positional troubles they’ve experienced since the team’s inception. If the gamble pays off, Houston has potential at making a deep playoff run, especially the defensive force led by MVP, JJ Watt.

Another exciting player that fans can keep an eye on from Houston is Braxton Miller. The converted quarterback will be vying for a wide receiving spot on the Texans after being drafted in the third round during this year’s draft. The former Buckeye is expected his first NFL action.

What to watch out for as Oakland gears up for Arizona in preseason opener

OAKLAND — The Raiders will finally be able to see a different color jersey in training camp, as they travel to the Valley of the Sun to open the 2016 NFL preseason schedule against the Arizona Cardinals Friday night.

Typically in the preseason, the starters play an a series or two to get their feet wet, so don’t expect key Raiders players like quarterback Derek Carr, wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper to be on the field for too long.

And why would you want those guys on the field in a preseason game that is, in all honesty, a meaningless game?

Or defensive linchpin Khalil Mack, who is primed to have a monster of a season, why should he even step on the field?

I expect those guys to be ready for the season and if they don’t play against the Cardinals, I wouldn’t be upset.

What I do expect is to see a lot of the draft picks that general manager Reggie McKenzie has stock-piled for Oakland that will serve as it’s depth this to get the bulk of the work. Rookies like quarterback Connor Cook, running back DeAndre Washington, safety Karl Joseph, and defensive tackle Jihad Ward should see significant time against Arizona.

Washington, Joseph, and Ward have all taken snaps with both the offensive and defensive first teams during training camp and have wowed coaches and teammates.

Arizona, who are one of the preeminent favorites to win the Super Bowl this year after falling short last year to the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship game, still features former Raiders players in quarterback Carson Palmer and offensive tackle Jared Veldheer, to go along  with the ageless Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd at wide receiver.

Kickoff is set for 7:05 PDT at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Raiders offensive line expected to be one of the premiers ones in the league

AP file photo: Oakland Raiders left offensive tackle Matt McCants (73) in the stance during the December 21, 2014 game against the Buffalo Bills

On the Raiders podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon your left offensive tackle is crucial in protecting the quarterback and that’s what quarterback Derek Carr will expect from his left offensive tackles Donald Penn and Matt McCants. Penn is one of the more solid tackles in the game in the last two years. Look for the Raiders right offensive tackle Austin Howard and Meneilk Watson are the ones to watch for and the Raiders have the potential to have one of the best offensive lines in all of football along with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Raiders headed into Arizona are going to be one of the more watched lines and that offensive line. The Raiders have one of the more premier offensive lines in all of football matter of fact Pro Football Focus had all the starting offensive linemen at 80 percent which goes to show you that they really believe in them.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Kelly to key in Gabbert and Kaepernick in first preseason game Sun vs Houston at Levis

rantsports.com file photo: Blaine Gabbert (2) and Colin Kaepernick (7) quarterbacks of the San Francisco 49ers getting prepared for this Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans at Levis Stadium

On the 49ers podcast with David Zizmor, the focus this Sunday at Levis Stadium when the San Francisco 49ers host the Houston Texans will be on 49ers quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. 49ers head coach Chip Kelly was asked what he looking for at quarterback and he used the typical NFL buzzwords “efficiency, the ability to control the offense that kind of stuff.

On the surface those statements would seem to favor Gabbert a tiny bit just because Gabbert is better checking his receivers and reading through his routes. At the same time you can’t read too much into it in general because your not talking about a great NFL quarterback. Your talking about Gabbet and Kaepernick and the reason either hasn’t been good enough to win it yet.

Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who owned the San Francisco 49ers from 1977 to 2000, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday in Canton, Ohio.

With DeBartolo at the helm, the 49ers won five Super Bowls and established themselves as a perennial superpower during the ’80s and ’90s with Joe Montana and later Steve Young under center.

“For me, one of the biggest honors is joining my guys,” DeBartolo said in his speech. “Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Charles Haley, Freddy Dean, Steve Young and of course, the great Bill Walsh. It’s no secret what a big part they played in me being here today.”

The 69-year-old has a bit of a mixed legacy. In 1999, he was suspended by the NFL after he failed to report a bribe. He was involved in a corruption case that involved Edwin Edwards, the former governor of Louisiana.

But on Saturday, all of that was in the past for “Eddie D’s” special day. Though, he mades sure to credit everyone else who made an impact.

“I stand here today for the equipment managers and the groundskeepers, and the laundry crew who worked hard everyday,” he said. “I stand here for the executive assistants, the PR team and the interns who worked through the weekends. I stand here for the scouts and the bus drivers, and the cooks and the schedulers and (hot) dog venders, and the community reps who might never ever see their name in lights, but who are every bit as important to building a winning football franchise, as the players we root for on Sunday.”

DeBartolo is also a member of the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, in which he was inducted in 2008. Forever remembered as a unique, legendary owner, DeBartolo made an indelible imprint in 49ers’ history and his impact on not just the 49ers, but football as  whole, will live on for generations to come.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Raiders counting on Carr to lead offense into big year

AP photo file photo: Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr tuning up in Raiders camp on July 30th workout

On the Raiders podcast with Joe, the Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has been nothing but great in camp he and Amari Cooper are roommates their a little more on the same page which your suppose to do in camp. Carr is up for a big season it depends on him taking care of the ball particularly in the fourth quarter. He had seven league leading interceptions in the fourth quarter.

That just can’t happen from a career franchise quarterback, it’s one more year under assistant quarterback coach Bill Musgrave under the same offense. The Raiders have added some playmakers like in former Texas Tech running back DeAndre Washington. The Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio’s goal is to be a team that finishes out better, a team that hangs on the ball  little bit more.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Former Eagles players say Kelly was dictator and you were gone if you spoke out

AP photo: San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Kelly gets ready to get his team into shape for the 2016 pre season

On the San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor, Philadelphia Eagles tackle Lane Johnson said of former head coach and current 49ers head coach Chip Kelly that he was a dictator when he was coaching in Philly and linesman Jason Peters said that Kelly would get ride of any veteran who spoke out. What happened for Johnson and Peters they didn’t have a good experience under Kelly.

If you want to characterize it as Kelly being a dictator or Kelly not communicating so be it but the bottom line is they didn’t like what was going on in Philadelphia and it’s reflected in their comments. How that’s going to play out with San Francisco that’s anybody’s guess. It’s not like were hearing this from every single player from the Eagles it’s a couple of guys on their offensive line you have to take this all with a grain of salt.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Kaepernick in for the present, Gabbert returns to the back up role

AP photo: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick gets his passes in at camp on June 9th

On the 49ers podcast with Dave the 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is in camp with the 49ers, Kaepernick as you might remember tried to get his agent to work a deal with the 49ers so he could leave the team and move out of town and there were a lot of rumors swirling around the idea of Kaepernick being shopped and being traded to the Denver Broncos in the off season.

The Broncos had former quarterback Peyton Manning retire and now they had their former quarterback Brock Oswieler their back up went to Houston during free agency. The move for Kaepernick to Denver never happened and whatever the asking price was or what Denver was willing to pay it didn’t match up.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Lots to like on this Raiders team this year; huge offensive additions and Del Rio likes

AP photo: Oakland Raiders wide receiver Michael Crabtree reaches for a pass at the Raiders mini camp on Wednesday June 15, 2016

On the Raiders podcast with J Hawkes, Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio since he took over the team last season you saw the improvement this club has taken on and now the talk is that the Raiders are ready to be a playoff contender. They are expected to be better than a .500 club with all the improvements that they’ve made. The Raiders have the largest offensive front line in the NFL and have a run game that Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has confidence in that can get them places.

There are numerous players in the league who would love to play for this Raiders offense and like what Michael Crabtree and the offense has done. Jihad Ward whose a second round draft pick brings a lot of speed on the offense and being a second round pick that catches the attention of Del Rio and he looks forward to getting Ward some looks into the offense.

NFL ‘awards’ Pro Bowl to Orlando for two years plus option

By Daniel Dullum
Sports Radio Service
Friday, June 03, 2016

Orlando, Fla., is serious about getting into the football business, both at the college and professional levels.

The NFL announced that the 2017 Pro Bowl will be hosted by recently renovated Camping World Stadium, formerly known as the Citrus Bowl. But that’s not all. Because the Miami Dolphins are in the midst of a $450 million renovation of their current stadium, the Dolphins are already moving their Aug. 25 home exhibition game against the Atlanta Falcons to Orlando.

The Falcons-Dolphins preseason tilt will mark the first time since 1997 that an NFL exhibition game has been played at Orlando.

Coinciding with the relocation of the Pro Bowl from Honolulu, the NFL’s all-star game will return to a less-confusing AFC vs. NFC format after three years of having teams chosen similar to a pickup game. Orlando will host the next two Pro Bowls and holds an option on a third year.

The NFL, which feels that interest in the Pro Bowl had dwindled in recent years, had until Tuesday to notify Hawaii of its intent to move the game, and did so this past Tuesday.

Among the cities that bid for the Pro Bowl were Honolulu, Sydney, Australia and Houston.

The University of Miami is also looking at the possibility of playing an early 2016 home game in Orlando if the Dolphins’ stadium upgrades aren’t completed on schedule. There’s a possibility, according to the Orlando Sentinel, that the Hurricanes’ football opener against Florida A&M could easily move to Camping World Stadium.

Florida State has already scheduled its opener against Ole Miss to be played in Orlando on Sept. 5.

Civic leaders in Orlando feel the $250 million stadium renovation makes their city a destination for major events.
