Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Will coach Gruden lose his job over racial email slur regarding NFLPA boss DeMaurice Smith

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden (left) says he’s sorry about the email he sent July 2011 to former Washington Football Team president Bruce Allen saying NFLPA Executive director Maurice Smith (right) “has lips the size of Michellin tires” (photo from Sports Illustrated)

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez:

#1 Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden it was uncovered sent decade old email to former team president of the Washington Football Team Bruce Allen on July 2011 Gruden was a ESPN analyst at the time. The players’ union voted against the collective bargaining agreement setting Gruden off against Union Chief DeMaurice Smith emailing Allen saying ““Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of michellin [sic] tires.”

#2 The email turned up as the NFL is conducting an investigation on discrimination by the Washington Football Team and Gruden had said he was sorry while being interviewed by the Wall Street Journal saying he meant “Rubber lips” meaning people who are lying.

#3 The NFL condemned the email saying, We condemn the statement and regret any harm that its publication may inflict on Mr. Smith or anyone else.” The NFL did not go onto say what steps if any there would be about the Gruden email.

#4 Rich, It’s too soon to say but how much something like this could be a distraction for the players, assistant coaches, and organization as the Raiders try and prepare for Sunday’s game against Chicago in Las Vegas?

#5 Rich, the Bears are coming off a ten point win against the Detroit Lions 24-14 from last Sunday their starting Justin Fields who threw for 209 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. The Raiders are coming off a 14 point loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football. Tell us how you see this Sunday’s match up.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw three touchdowns versus the Raiders leading the Chargers to a 28-14 win over the rival Las Vegas Raiders. The rivalry which has been going on for many many years started as Oakland versus San Diego.

Today of course it is Las Vegas versus Los Angeles. Regardless the Raiders slipped into So Cal slipping a few times. All happening in the new So Fi Stadium Stadium in Carson. The rivalry which has been going on for many , many years started as Oakland versus San Diego.

Today of course it is Las Vegas versus Los Angeles. Regardless the Raiders slipped into So-fi Stadium with an undefeated record. For a while the Raiders hung in there …but Jared Cook broke free over the middle and Justin Herbert hit the former Raider tight end with a touchdown pass.

That lead the Chargers to three more scores. Derek Carr did a pretty good job today but wasn’t effective when the Raiders needed it. The simply could not get into the end zone when they needed to …and as often as they needed too.

The Chargers QB Justin Herbert took advantage of every opportunity and scored. Winning the game 28-14. The Raiders prepare to play former LB Khalil Mack and the Chicago Bears back in Las Vegas this Sun Oct 10, 2021 at Allegiant Stadium.

Raiders overcome tough start, get 31-28 win over Dolphins now 3-0

By Rich Perez

Las Vegas Raiders beat writer Sports Radio Service

LAS VEGAS- The Raiders overcame a bad start and came out victorious in a tough game with the Miami Dolphins.

John Gruden had to be frustrated in the first half after Miami took a commanding lead in the ball game.

Derek Carr unceremoniously threw an interception while falling backwards that led to a Miami touchdown by the linebackers rolling down the field, Uncontested.

The second half had the Raiders really brewing up a comeback by coming out of a half wanting to seek and destroy a new game attitude, knowing they were at home , knowing that they were up against a second string quarterback in Jacoby Brissett.

Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards ,the dynamic duo with the Raiders ,have really been shining the last few weeks and they did just that again on Sunday. Both helped the Raiders on key drives to secure the victory.

RB Corp of Kenyan Drake and Payton Barber also did well in covering for Josh Jacobs who was out with a toe injury.

The Raiders also added a Dolphins safety as the first of the year for the team.

Next up the Raiders face a very strong challenge with the Los Angeles Chargers in So Cal. Suddenly the Chargers have become a strong contender in the west with new 2nd year quarterback Herbert at the helm and a key win in KC.

Injuries pile up for Steelers; Raiders Carr throws for two touchdowns in 26-17 win

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker TJ Watt (90) gets the swoop down on Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) Watt would later leave the game with a injury and watch from the sidelines in the second half at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Sun Sep 19, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Rich Perez

The Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) couldn’t withstand the injuries and fell to the Las Vegas Raiders (2-0) 26-17 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. One of the key injuries of the game was when outside linebacker TJ Watt left in the first half and it felt like one of the wheels fell off for the Steelers.

Watt was seen on television standing on the sidelines in the second half with uniform off wearing Steelers cap and garb colecting his thoughts. Watt suffered a groin injury and you could feel the tension at Heinz Field which you could cut the Steel Curtain with a butter knife as any adrenaline the Steelers had left them.

The Steelers were coming off a 26-17 opening week win from last Sun Sep 12th in Buffalo but all that was for not as they couldn’t muster any defense against the Raiders. The Raiders had a 9-6 lead after the first half and outscored the Steelers in the second half 17-10 the Steelers offense just fell flat.

Raider quarterback Derek Carr threw 28-37 for 382 yards and two touchdowns and key for Carr he never threw an interception he got protection all day from his offensive line. Other Steelers injuries cornerback Joe Haden and inside linebacker Devin Bush were inactive also suffering from groin injuries.

Steelers defensive tackle Tyson Alualu is out for the season with a fractured ankle and that didn’t take long as the injury happened during the Raiders first possession. Carr threw for a 61 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Henry Ruggs. The offensive line protected Carr so well that he had time to drop back and throw to Ruggs at 50 yards for the score.

Carr dropped back to pass 42 times in the game a lot of opportunities and was sacked twice. Watt got to strip sack Carr in the first half before he left with his injury. The Steelers Melvin Ingram also got the other sack. Carr made it look easy in the second half and had no struggles with the Steeler secondary. After suffering multiple injuries the Steelers looked as if all the wind had been taken out of their sails.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team needs time to grow and next Sunday comes fast after playing a game like they did on Sunday, “Win or lose, we’ve got to grow. We’ve got too many young people, new people in significant roles. They’ve just got to grow in terms of understanding those roles, the details required to win, the skills relative to their position to execute in those critical moments.”

The Raiders will entertain the Miami Dolphins (1-1) who were shut out Sunday by the Buffalo Bills (1-1) 35-0 on their home field in Miami. Kick off at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Sep 26th is at 1:05 pm.

On Las Vegas Raiders podcast:

#1 Rich, offensive lineman Richie Incognito will not be in the line up Sunday and Denzelle Good is out for the season the pressure to hold the Steel Curtain Sunday will be on John Simpson like last week against the Ravens. Simpson will have to be on his A game against the Steelers defense Sunday.

#2 Rich, talk about the front seven and how difficult it will be for Raiders center Andre James and the offensive line against the Pittsburgh Steelers front seven Sunday at Heinz Field.

#3 Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs impressed the coaching staff in camp and in practices to earn the job at starting nickel back. The coaches after the Baltimore game said Hobbs hasn’t seen competition until he faces the Steelers Sunday.

#4 Rich, Hunter Renfrow had himself a game the coaches say he was a huge part of the receiving core last Monday night with six catches for 70 yards and of those 59 yards came from catching them in the slot.

#5 The Raiders defense will try and read the Steelers offense all game long Sunday. The Steelers handled the Buffalo Bills in their last win last week 23-16. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was 18-32 for 188 yards and threw for one touchdown. How do you see the Raiders defense attempting to shut down Roethlisberger’s game down Sunday?
