Cal gets off the mat and surprises Northwestern in season-opening road win

By Morris Phillips

Quite frankly, Cal’s opening drive of 2014 may have been better than their entire, 1-11, 2013 season put together. That’s how good the 18-play drive was and, conversely, how bad the Bears were in their first season under head coach Sonny Dykes.

But the best part? Things got even better after the opening drive in Cal’s surprising 31-24 win over Northwestern. The Bears scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, built a 24-7 halftime lead, and held off a second-half rally by the Wildcats to beat a Division I opponent for the first time under Dykes.

“The big thing for me is just establishing what this team is,” Dykes said. “New Year. Everything is brand new and we’ll see where we are to start the year and make our journey.”

Cal’s two-pronged quarterback attack led the way as sophomore Jared Goff threw for 281 yards and three scores while freshman Luke Rubenzer spelled Goff and ran for a team-best 48 yards on 11 carries. Rubenzer made his name in pre-season practices with his arm and feet but was used in the opener as a change-up guy who wasn’t afraid to stick his helmet into the teeth of the defense.

Eight of Rubenzer’s 11 carries came on Cal’s first two drives as the freshman spelled Goff and kept the Wildcats’ defense on its heels. The 18-play opening drive culminated in a 1-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Treggs and was followed by an 11-play drive that ended when Kenny Lawler Jr. caught Goff’s 7-yard touchdown pass.

In between the two opening drives, the Bears’ defense stopped Northwestern at the Cal 22-yard line on fourth down and 1. Suddenly—and after being uncompetitive in games for long stretches in 2013—the Bears found themselves with a 14-0, first quarter lead.

When Northwestern finally struck back with a 54-yard touchdown pass and catch from Trevor Siemian to Cameron Dickerson late in the second quarter, the Bears opened their next drive with a 76-yard bomb from Goff to Trevor Davis that allowed Cal to take 24-7 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Davis not only caught his first touchdown as a Bear, he also led the team with 3 catches for 93 yards.

Cal saw Northwestern rally after halftime, slicing the Bears’ lead to 31-24 in the fourth quarter, but with the Wildcats driving for a potential, tying score in the final moments, Cal linebacker Jalen Jefferson came up with the critical interception with 1:38 remaining that preserved the win.

Jefferson was a one-man wrecking crew, finishing with a career-best 16 tackles along with a sack and his second-career interception, both coming in the fourth quarter.

Afterwards, the Bears were relieved to have ended their streak of losses against Division I opponents. But the disasterous 2013 season left the young team with only one direction—up—to pursue.

“All the work we put in all season, everything we did from last winter, all the way to spring ball, all the way to summer conditioning and all the way to camp has really kind of just come together,” Goff said. “That doesn’t mean we’re done or we’re finished or anything, but it just feels great to especially give the seniors, the guys who have been working for five years to get a big win like this.”

The Bears open their home schedule on Saturday at noon when they get a visit from the Sacramento State Hornets.

NCAA Football commentary: Powerful earthquake rocks Bay Area, multiple injuries one week before college football starts

by Michelle Richardson

We say our prayers to anyone who was effected by Sunday morning’s 6.1 magnitude earthquake which shook the Bay Area at 3:20AM hoping that you didn’t suffer anything more than rattled nerves. Muliple injuries were reported out of Napa and the Sonoma Valley which includes the epicenter American Canyon, Suisun, Fairfield, and Vallejo. For others from other parts of the country they think it’s just the earth shaking and things falling but an earthquake can be as dangerous as a hurricane, tornado or storm.

When it happens in the middle of the night a building that is not retrofitted that could be a problem like it was for some of the older buildings that were damaged in the North Bay. Sesmically it was reported that the quake should not have too much effect for college football next Saturday as most of the damage was done in the Napa Valley. That would be more like Homboldt State or Somona State somewhere like that could be effected.

You will think about that because you have a lot of kids who are returning to college in the Bay Area who grew up in those areas. That will be ever present on the athletes young men and women who grew up in the Napa Valley and the NCAA will be thinking about their families and hoping that everybody is safe and had no harm done to them.

Alabama vs. West Virgina: I don’t understand how Alabama not being the reigning NCAA Champion is holding onto the number one spot and I’ve always said “it’s your title until they take it and the winner should start the year as number one” that’s just how I feel about it. This is a good match up coming this Saturday definitely I’ll go with Alabama the Crimson Tide just retooled and retooled and it just seems like their never out of stock of young talent.

In the last three years the Crimson Tide have lost a lot of veteran talent they’ve either graduated or went to the NFL. Especially losing a quarterback who won three national championships, it could be a very big learning curve in Alabama and there is a bit of quarterback controversy with Jake Coker, David Cornwell, and Cooper Bateman.

When you have a transfer from Florida State and you have a quarterback whose been the cornerstone of the team and someone is coming in as a transfer and now there is a bit of a controversy and someone who didn’t even start from another school and they come to take your place at Alabama that could raise some hackles. Knowing head coach Nick Saban he has a way to make it work. All I can say it’s going to be an interesting year at Alabama.

Clemson vs. Georgia: The Clemson Tigers lost last year in the championship to Florida State and the Tigers lost a lot of players and they lost their starting quarterback. The AP Poll rated the Tigers number two but polls are about as useful as socks with holes in them. Clemson is going to struggle this year they open up against Georgia on Saturday.

Their not going to be as good as everybody might think their going to be. Their going to struggle with a new quarterback and whoever that’s going to be. There’s a whole cavalcade of quarterbacks trying out for the Tigers, Chad Kelly, Austin McCaskill, Dave Olson, Nick Schuessler, Cole Stoudt, and Deshaun Watson. There are a lot of players gone from last season.

I’m not necessarily saying that Clemson will be in the hunt for the national championship but I don’t see it happening they might make a bowl game but there not going to get into the national championship. I’ve been around before, I’m crazy like that.

Bears report: Dykes admits team needs spurcing up on offense; reports GPAs much better

by Ralph Gora

SANTA CLARA–The one thing that was discussed at Wednesday’s college coaches luncheon at Levi’s Stadium that the Cal Bears player athletes scores were much better. That was something confirmed by the head coach Sonny Dykes. Dykes also admitted the Bears had a tough year last season going 1-12 but look to turn things around in 2014.

“We have tremendous optimism as we start on Sunday and look forward to moving on our program, we talk about this last year about the small battles that we won and what they meant to us” Dykes said. Dykes said that there are things that need to be worked on during camp that will impact the future of the program at Cal.

Dykes said that the Bears need to believe in themselves and said that last season brought some pretty adverse situations especially considering that the team won only one game in 2013 with not a lot wins on the field. The optimism on the club has continued and Dykes said it’s carried from early spring to this summer.

Dykes is happy with the team’s hard work in camp thus far and he’s been please with the players attitude and what they’ve brought to camp. Dykes is excited about what he’s seen with the team since last fall and feels that the Bears have a chance to build for this season and looks forward to be involved in a program that the school could be proud of.

The student athletes have improved in the classroom in what was an issue, Dykes said that the team has addressed this with the team and told the players that improvement on their grades need to have the utmost action taken and that it’s paying off for the Bears in the classroom. Dykes said that the players have raised their APR from a 922 to 969 from last year and that was a tremendous jump.

The grade scores have placed Cal in the middle of the Pac 12 Conference and Dykes said there is still work to be done as he is pushing for the school to be at the top. Dykes feels with that number the school can only get better and better with improvement and Dykes said he’s excited that that grade average number is only going to increase for his players.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Angels set to turn things around in chase of A’s and first

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

ANAHEIM–The Los Angeles Angels are playing great ball right now, their playing to win and the last few years the A’s have won the west. Everybody on the Angels is healthy, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout is back, Josh Hamilton and the Angels have a great line up.

I challenge anybody who knows baseball to compare the Angels position by position. The Angels are a better team than the A’s. The A’s at present are playing much better no doubt about that. Looking at the Angels you have Pujols at first, you have Howie Kendrick at second, Erick Aybar is a great shortstop with a gold glove.

The Angels have a great team with Hamilton, Trout, they have great pitching with Jerod Weaver and C.J. Wilson and on Monday night they had starter Garrett Richards who pitched a tremendous game. The Angels are going for it they have won four in a row beating Oakland for their fourth on Monday night.

NCAA players making move for pay: It’s very simple I got one opinion I don’t agree with it, I don’t think college athletes should be paid to play sports. You go to college for academics and if you excel in sports that’s great.

There are a small amount of players that become professionals, you have to work hard, you have to have some kind of God given talent. I don’t agree I don’t think the players in college should get paid. This country is huge and it’s the richest country on earth.

There are still plenty of opportunities, you got four terrific leagues here. you have the NFL, MLB, NHL and the NBA. There are so many outlets if your good at the sport. I don’t think we should be paying kids to be playing sports in college.

World Cup in Brazil: Brazil is a huge country territory wise and it’s larger than the United States and population wise it’s still a third world country and their still very poor. There is a lot of criticism about FIFA.

FIFA has been for three years loaded with corruption and scandals and they have a lot of beautiful stadiums in Brazil and the people there are kind of complaining about what is going to happen when World Cup ends?

They cannot eat those stadiums there, what are they going to do with those stadiums? There are still a lot of people there still suffering. The World Cup should help them though in their economy. Brazil still has a lot of problems, the Brazilians are so proud to have the World Cup.

Martin leaves Tennessee to coach the Golden Bears

By Morris Phillips

Purdue man leaves Tennessee to coach the Golden Bears.

Must be a story there.

And there is.

Cuonzo Martin is leaving the Tennessee Volunteers to replace Mike Montgomery at Cal.  Martin spent three years in Knoxville following four years as head coach at Missouri State.   The former Purdue player appeared to be staying with Tennessee after leading the Vols on a season concluding run and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. But discord ran deep between Martin and Tennessee fans who campaigned loudly that he not be retained for a fourth year.
While others like former Warriors coach Eric Musselman and former UCLA coach Ben Howland were mentioned in the search, Martin was not. It wasn’t until Xavier coach Chris Mack apparently turned down the job that the Tennessee coach was seriously considered.
The Bears return David Kravish, Jabari Bird, Jordan Mathews and Tyrone Wallace to a team that finished tied for fourth in the Pac-12 and made an NIT appearance.

BERKELEY–Cal Bears head coach Mike Montgomery announced his retirement to the team on Monday after talking with Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour. Barbour was insistent that he reconsider and stay given what’s going on with the program and with the football program struggling and the basketball team being the bell weather with their successes.

This is something they’ve given a lot of thought to and according to reports as recently as a couple of weeks ago that he was looking towards retirement and this is the way Montgomery is going to go. At age 67 he’s done everything that you could do in coaching and nows the time.

Although Montgomery had bladder cancer he’s comepletely healthy at this point, there weren’t any issues in regards to his health this season and it’s hard to say if the cancer was a part of the reason why he’s retiring. He’s healthy now thank God and if he retires he’ll retire healthy.

Monty could have coached at Cal for as long as he wanted to and in his six year run at Cal he is arguably as impressive as his 18 year run at Stanford. Starting from the first year at Cal he took a team that former Cal coach Ben Braun had a real struggle with and turned them into first year conference champions and obviously Cal hasn’t won a conference championship in years.

Montgomery followed that up with four NCAA appearences, NIT appearences, no losing seasons, he’s got two years left on his contract but I’m sure if he wanted to stay longer he could. This program despertately needs him. They need his energy and his ability to win and draw attention to the university.

He could not be a in a more sucure spot in regards to his situation at Cal, in 32 years coaching at Montana, Stanford, and at Cal he’s compiled a win-loss record of 678-316 and 16 NCAA Tournament appearences. College sports is a constant business as Montgomery retires the university will have to move on.

The University will continue to nationally recruit and also in their own backyard at the local Oakland high school with Ivan Rabb at Bishop O’Dowd a top ranked junior a major national recruit and in order to keep that young man at home their going to need a solid situation and a place that doesn’t include Montgomery and they’re going to want to move forward.

NFL Report: Culliver arrested for hit and run and brass knuckles;former Cal star Jackson done in Philly

by Morris Phillips and Ken Gimblin

SAN JOSE–San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver who was best known for making anti gay remarks before Super Bowl XLVII, hit a bicyclist in South San Jose at 7th and Tully Roads on Friday morning, Culliver hit the cyclist and took off around 10AM. Culliver who was driving with a suspended license was then followed by an unnamed witness.

When the unnamed witness cornered Culliver, Culliver got out of his car and threatened to beat the witness with brass knuckles. The witness didn’t move his car and Culliver who was boxed in tried to flee and in doing so hit the witness’ car and police arrived at the scene and Culliver was arrested for felony and misdemeanor hit and run and carrying brass knuckles which are considered illegal contraband.

Culliver missed the entire 2013 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Culliver who said during Super Bowl week in 2013 regarding possible gay teammates in the locker room that “a gay player wouldn’t be welcome on the 49ers” after much critcism for Culliver’s remarks he apologized saying, “they are very ugly comments and that’s not what I feel in my heart. Hopefully I can learn and grow from this experience and this situation.”

The 49ers front office released a statement regarding Culliver’s arrest saying “we will remain in contact with Chris and the local authorities as we continue to gather the facts regarding this situation, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will reserve further comment at this time.”

DeSean Jackson released by Eagles: Former Cal Golden Bears receiver DeSean Jackson was released from the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. Jackson who finished his second year with the Eagles in the middle of a five year contract was released by the team because of his off field activities and connections.

According to NJ.com it was reported that Jackson had reputed ties with a Los Angeles street gang also the Eagles released him according to a source for “work ethic and attitude” issues. The Eagles were mainly concerned about Jackson’s gang activities and that the team had no other choice but to use the NFL’s policy of off field conduct code in releasing Jackson.

The Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, general manager Howie Roseman, and owner Jeffery Lurie had discussed this matter over a span of 24 hours prior to releasing the Eagles superstar with team lawyers. The team had been in trade talks with other clubs but that converstation was halted after the NJ.com information came out about Jackson’s gang ties.

Jackson for his part denies that he was affiliated with any gang whatsoever in a statement he released on Friday saying, “I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off the field. I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member, and to speculate and assume that Iam involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible.”

SMU’s big three sinks Cal in the NIT

By Morris Phillips

A game featuring coaches with a combined 2,400 career wins figured to be fiercely competitive.  That Mike Montgomery and Larry Brown sniffed out the other’s intentions on the biggest possession of the night in itself was fitting.  This time, Brown’s execution was a step ahead of Montgomery’s anticipation as Nic Moore’s 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining won it for SMU, 67-65.

The Cal Bears finish their season at 21-14, one game short of a NIT semifinal appearance in Madison Square Garden.

SMU will make the Garden appearance, and continue a renaissance season under Brown, who is making the 13th stop in his Hall of Fame coaching career.  The Mustangs were the most notable NCAA tournament omission, and they’ve displayed their worthiness, by winning three straight in the NIT.

But this one was whisker-close, and had it gone the other way, could have easily stood as the biggest win in Montgomery’s exemplary six years at Cal.

The Bears played without Richard Solomon and Kameron Rooks and saw Ricky Kreklow compete bravely with a broken nose, but never backed down from bigger SMU, which lost only one game all season at sold out Moody Coliseum.  With three lead changes in the final 90 seconds, this was a crowd pleaser, well above typical NIT fare that pales to the bigger NCAA bracket.

“The environment, the atmosphere was terrific,” Montgomery said.  “It’s great to see the job Larry has done here and got the excitement back up.  It was loud.”

Cal shot well early and led most of the first half, only to see SMU respond in the final minutes to lead, 32-29 at the break.  Spearheaded by Jabari Bird, who scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half, the Bears erased SMU’s seven-point advantage and led 18 seconds remaining.   That’s when the Bears abandoned the zone look they’d used for most of the night. The 67-year old Montgomery knew SMU would solve a zone in that situation and create a quality look to win.  But the 73-year old Brown was a step ahead.

“I thought they would play man, they had played zone the whole time, and fortunately they played man and Markus (Kennedy) set a good screen and we got a wide-open look,” Brown said.

Sophomore guard Moore raced along the three point line from the baseline and caught and shot the game winner in a flawless sequence.

“(Brown) called the one that I wanted to hear and Nick Russell found me and I hit the shot,” Moore said.  “Moody magic came out.”

“I thought it was the right decision,” Montgomery said of the defensive change.  “We were switching all the ball screens…everybody was prepared to do that. Tough shot…good result for them.”

Justin Cobbs raced up court when Cal eschewed a final timeout, but his three attempt at the buzzer just missed. The senior guard had just given Cal a led with 18 seconds to go, on a shot from distance, but this one was barely off.

”It felt good actually,” Cobbs said. ”It just didn’t go down.”

Cobbs helped lead Cal with 18 points in his final college game.  Bird had his best game of his young career, scoring in double figures for the third straight game for the first time.   In the absence of Solomon, David Kravish gamely played 38 minutes, scoring 12 points with eight rebounds.

Markus Kennedy had 19 points for SMU and Moore added 11.  The Mustangs enjoyed a huge disparity on the glass, 35-22.

Michelle Richardson on March Madness: Cardinal to face Dayton Thursday;Wichita 35 game win streaks ends

by Michelle Richardson

Stanford 60 Kansas 57: I don’t know about anybody else but my bracket totally looks like crap and the Stanford Cardinal did their homework for this game and at Stanford kids usually don’t come out of college early. When Stanford went in there they were truly the underdog going against Kansas on Sunday.

The point of the advantage for Stanford are the players staying in college to the end and having the experience on the team and Kansas just had too many younger players on their team and Stanford won out on experience. Even though the Jayhawks had athletic talent they couldn’t necessarily get the job done because in college you have to play the more athletic talent game.

You really have to have knowledge of the game and college is the place where you gather that knowledge where you gather that knowledge about playing basketball. It was a very good game, you had four of the Cardinal starters in double digits and they really played well on both sides of the ball. The leading scorer for Stanford was Dwight Powell with 15 points, Chasson Randall had 13, and with ten points each Anthony Brown and Stefan Nastic.

Cardinal vs. Dayton (Thursday March 27): These two teams match up very evenly and this one is going to be a real barnburner. Both of these teams get up and down the court very well, they know how to score. Dayton is one of those teams that is not afraid. Dayton will go there and fight you tooth and nail.

They’ve done this many times before and for Dayton head coach Archie Miller who really got his young men focused and really have to get these guys ready to play. Dayton is the quintessential of giant killers don’t be surprised when they beat Ohio Stated during the season and they can beat an Ohio State because their not afraid of Ohio State.

Many of those young men who played for the Dayton Flyers probably played high school and Jr.College ball against these same gentlemen who are at Ohio State. Ohio State won’t even play the other Ohio teams in pre season. The Buckeyes won’t play Dayton, Toledo or Kent State. They don’t want to play those guys because those kids are too familar with these players.

Stanford and Dayton will be a war on Thursday for the next step in the brackets.

Kentucky 78 Wichita 76: The Shockers broke my heart I actually had Wichita going to the finals in the NCAA against Michigan State. I honestly thought Wichita State would be able to challege for the national championship and they did. Hats off to all of those young men. They really played a great basketball game against Kentucky and had a great 2013-14 season that they will never forget.

It was a very close game the high scorer for UK was Andrew Harrison with 20, Aaron Harrison with 19, and Julius Randall and James Young both finished with 13. For Wichita’s high scorers, Cleanthony Early finished with 31 and Ron Baker had 20. Fred VanFleet had only four points but he had six assists.

VanFleet was all over the place and he got into a litle foul trouble and had to be taken out of the game and that’s what took the turn for the Shockers was that they missed VanFleet. The problem with Wichita State was you only had points scored by two guys. The loss snapped a 35 game winning streak.
