Thompson’s fumble return for a touchdown keys Washington’s rout of Cal

By Morris Phillips

Think Shaq Thompson’s big play just seven minutes into Saturday’s Washington-Cal matchup wasn’t a game changer?

Simply look at the before and after UW’s star linebacker scooped up a Jared Goff fumble, broke a tackle just outside Cal’s goal line and raced a total of 100 yards for the game’s first score.

Before, the normally-challenged Cal defense opened with a three-and-out on Washington’s offense, still smarting from getting shut out in the second half at home against Stanford in their previous contest.  Meanwhile, Jared Goff shook off a shaky opening series to direct the Bears down the field on their second possession and had them poised for the game’s initial score with second-and-goal at the one yard line.

After, the Bears–averaging exactly 50 points a game–managed no more than face-saving, meaningless, late third quarter touchdown after trailing 28-0 at halftime.  The Huskies settled down, and methodically picked the Bears apart in an easy 31-7 victory.

So, once again, how did that start?  Well with Thompson the headliner in the game-within-the-game type story, you have to go all the way back to the beginning. In this case, that means all the way back to January 2012.

Back then, the Bears were looking to bounce back from a so-so 7-6 campaign in 2011 and they appeared to have a plan in place.  Led by ace recruiter, defensive line coach and former Cal player Tosh Lupoi, the Bears and Coach Jeff Tedford were poised to sign one of the nation’s best recruiting classes, and undeniably the best class brought in by Tedford in his decade as head coach.  Lupoi was the star of the show, securing commitments from Richmond’s Freddy Tagaloa, Sacramento’s Viliama Moala and others to give Cal an extremely-rare nationally top-ten recruiting class.

But with a week to go before national signing day, Lupoi bolted to Washington at the behest of then head coach Steve Sarkisian and Cal’s potential recruiting class was left swinging in the wind.  Lupoi had spent 12 years at Cal as a coach and a player after attending Concord’s powerhouse De La Salle H.S., and in what he described as a gut-wrenching decision left Cal for the greater potential of winning big at Washington and a salary more than double what he was making at Cal.

While Moala and Tagaloa stayed in place, other big-time recruits like Thompson and defensive end Ellis McCarthy were swayed.  McCarthy eventually signed with Oregon and Thompson, whose brother Syd’Quan played at Cal, followed Lupoi to Seattle.

The rest of the story is well-known: Cal faltered terribly in 2012, their first in remodeled Memorial Stadium, and Tedford was shown the door by then Athletic Director Sandy Barbour.  In Cal’s final season under Tedford and their first under Sonny Dykes, the Bears were a combined 4-20.

And instead of matriculating at Berkeley, Thompson went on to become a heck of football player at Washington, first as a safety, and now as a junior, a hard-hitting, playmaking linebacker, generally acknowledged as the Huskies’ best player on that side of the ball.  So when Goff fumbled trying to reach his arms and hands over the goal line, the football quite naturally bounced right to Thompson, who raced to the other end of the field for a Washington touchdown.

NCAA Football commentary: Undefeated no more five teams find the loss column and here’s who they are

by Michelle Richardson

Mississippi (5-0) 23 vs. Alabama (4-1) 17: The Alabama Crimson Tide have that USC thing going for them when they had that run but you have to play the game, the game has to be played. Alabama they have a lot of talent but this is what happens when teams have a lull. As a recruit I’m going to choose Old Miss over Alabama simply because Alabama is about three deep.

Arizona (5-0) 31 vs. Oregon (4-1) 24: I didn’t expect Oregon to continue being a perfect team and after I saw the Washington State (2-4) game when the Ducks went to Washington State Stadium in Pullman. I knew that Oregon would probably be out of the top five. I don’t necessarily see Oregon in the top four in the National Championships.

Especially the way that the Cougars stopped their offensive line if the Cougars had five or six more minutes I honestly think that the Cougars would have beat Oregon. I wasn’t drinking that Kool Aid and I wasn’t drinking Duck soup.

TCU (4-0) 33 vs. Oklahoma (4-1) 27: I’m from Forth Worth Texas and I have to tell you the Horned Frogs were so happy with this victory. I will honestly say this is probably one of the biggest wins for TCU since the break up of the old Southwest Conference when they used to play Oklahoma on a regular basis. I’ll just give you a little history lesson here when the old Southwest Conference broke up and the Big 12 was formed TCU was kind of put on the outs.

TCU and SMU were put on the outs, TCU wasn’t allowed to join the Big 12 at that time it was because of Baylor University. That’s why there’s such a rivalry, Baylor did not want TCU in the Big 12, but now that their back in and they’re playing Baylor on a regular basis and their playing Oklahoma too. It’s old school again it like Texas rivals, so this win is huge for a program like TCU.

Miss St (5-0) 48 vs. Texas A&M (5-1) 31: This was an exciting game and I’ll be honest with you wow, I did not expect this. Miss St is just killing them. Wouldn’t it be crazy if you saw an all Mississippi finals. This game was just crazy Miss St was at home in their own stadium and A&M knew this was going to be hard because you just don’t leave to play at Miss St down in Oxford.

It doesn’t matter if Miss St was the worst team in the country you still can’t sell them short because when they go on their home field they want to play like champions. When they did they stuck it to Texas A&M. Texas A&M had a better fourth down efficency rating but it was the third down efficency rating that got it working for Miss St.

Utah (4-1) 30 vs. UCLA (4-1) 28: UCLA is one of the best teams in the Pac 12, they’ll get it together and they’ll turn it around. I expect to see UCLA in the Pac 12 Championship game. This is the one team I expect to see bounce back from this loss and possibly run the table again.

Watch out for Washington St in the Pac 12. They were the whipping boy of the old Pac Ten and now the Pac 12 for a long time. What you got to realize Cougars head coach Mike Leach is in his third year and you can see the difference in how their playing. The Cougars almost beat Cal on Saturday by one point 60-59. Watch out for a team like Wash St that’s the kind of team that’s going to spoil your Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.

Halliday throws for record 734 yards, but Cal pulls out a thriller, 60-59 at Washington State

By Morris Phillips

What transpired in Pullman, Washington deep in the recesses of Saturday night truly was unbelievable.

The Cal Bears, facing record-breaking Connor Halliday and Washington State, found a way to win despite trailing by 10 points after one quarter, 11 points at halftime, and 11 points on three separate occasions in the third quarter.

In a game of non-stop offense and scoreboard changes, the Bears’ James Langford suffered the worst indignity when his PAT was blocked with 8:52 remaining and Cal clinging to a rare lead, 54-52.

With long time Cal play-by-play announcer Joe Starkey besides himself regarding referee calls on caught passes, fumbles and the like, saying several times that “every, single call has gone against Cal,” the Bears actually benefitted from penalty calls, committing just 8 for minus 34 yards while the Cougars were whistled 12 times for 121 yards.

And even as Halliday set an FCS record for passing in a game with 734 yards, the Bears got 527 yards and five touchdown passes from Jared Goff and hung on to win 60-59.

The win improved Cal’s record to 4-1, 2-1 in the Pac-12, one season after they failed to win a conference game and finished 1-11. The Bears have undeniably taken the rough, unpaved road through five games, winning the last two by a combined score of 119-115. Despite averaging 50 points a game, the Bears haven’t been able to relax, allowing 40 points a game with a defense that ranks 119th and allows 545 yards per game.

Against WSU, the Bears faced a season’s worth of adversity, allowing Halliday to throw for better than 600 yards and six touchdowns through three quarters. With two minutes left in the third, Halliday hooked up with River Cracraft for a nine-yard score which put the Cougars up 52-41. But in a crazy affair, that would be Halliday’s final touchdown pass of the night.

Through three quarters, the Bears led just once, 27-24 early in the second half, after they scored two quick touchdowns right after halftime. But that lead lasted less than a minute, as Halliday hit Cracraft on an 86-yard scoring pass and run two plays after Cal took the lead.

When the Bears regained the lead for the second time, Langford missed the extra point, leaving Cal vulnerable to a potential game-winning field goal. But with the clock running out, Washington State’s final drive stalled on Cal’s 3-yard line, and their kicker, Quentin Breshears missed a 19-yarder with seconds remaining.

Breshears had connected on all three of his field goal attempts over 30 yards, but with the miss, the Turlock native has missed two of three from less than 30 yards. Stuck with a difficult angle for the kick, the junior missed left. The Bears celebrated wildly before taking a knee on the game’s final play.

Besides Goff, the Bears were lead by Trevor Davis, who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, one covering 98 yards and the second for 100 yards. Davis also pulled down the game-winning touchdown catch from 51 yards out, a play that put Cal up, 60-59 with 3:18 remaining.

Bryce Treggs also had a big game with 10 catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bears have a share of first-place in the Pac-12 North with a 2-1 record. But things get increasingly tougher for Cal in the coming weeks with five of their seven remaining opponents currently ranked. But first up the Bears face unranked Washington at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Bend don’t break: Cal finally nets a Pac-12 win in shootout with Colorado

By Morris Phillips

The reactions after Cal’s first Pac-12 conference win in over a year were priceless, and you didn’t have to talk to James Langford-who kicked the game-winning field goal in double overtime—to term them as such.

ESPN’s SportsCenter jumped all over it, opening their show with the emotional Bears gathered around their bear claw logo in their locker room chanting “This is Bear Territory!” The segment went near 30 seconds, an eternity on a highlight show recapping another busy Saturday of wall-to-wall sports activity.

Langford didn’t even try to recount the events directly after his kick sailed through the uprights. The Cal Poly transfer said he never looks up after a kick and wasn’t sure who was grabbing him in the aftermath.

“All the noise confirmed that it was good,” Langford remembered. “I didn’t really have to see it.”

The Cal kicker was actually run over by a Colorado defender on the play which drew a flag that was quickly announced as declined in the moments after the kick. But afterwards, Langford didn’t seem to remember that either.

“Being around your best friends and teammates for one of the best moments of your life is just totally priceless,” Langford said. “My cheeks kind of hurt from smiling so much.”

With the win, the Bears ended a streak of conference futility that saw them lose all nine conference games in 2013. Cal hadn’t won a conference home opener since 2010, and second-year coach Sonny Dykes hadn’t experienced a conference win since he was coaching Louisiana Tech in 2012.

“If there has ever been a team that knows about perseverance and sticking together, it’s these guys,” Dykes said. “They did a great job of finding a way to win the football game.”

Almost lost in all the hoopla was Cal’s devastating loss in Arizona last week on a last-second Wildcats’ Hail Mary pass that was the team melt down in muggy, desert heat after leading for almost the entire ballgame. The loss stands as the only blemish in what would have been a 4-0 start to this season, one year after the team finished 1-11.

The Bears seemingly fought uphill the entire afternoon, allowing the Buffs to score 21 points in the first quarter as the defense couldn’t catch its rhythm to counteract Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau. In a game in which the Buffs would run 110 offensive plays, Liufau put up Arena-like numbers with 46 of 67 attempted passes for 449 yards and seven touchdowns.

But in a game of back and forth, Jared Goff may have been less accurate, but more deadly, also throwing for 449 yards and seven touchdowns on just 23 completed passes. It was Goff’s beautifully-thrown, 40-yard touchdown pass to Chris Harper that had the Bears near victory, leading 49-42 with 2:24 remaining in regulation.

But instead, things were just getting started.

Liufau and Colorado responded in the final minute with a 30-yard touchdown pass that went to Bryce Bobo with 21 seconds remaining. That tied the score at 49 and put the proceedings into overtime.

On Cal’s third play of the extra session, Goff found Bryce Treggs streaking across the back of the end zone for a 56-49 Cal lead. But Colorado struck right back, needing just one play for Luifau to find Nelson Spruce from 25 yards out.

In the second overtime, the Buffs marched to Cal’s two-yard line then saw the Bears muster some resistance in a goal-line stand that saw the throwing Buffaloes decide to run. On fourth down, miscommunication cost Colorado as Liufau was thrown for a three-yard loss.

Surprisingly, after seven touchdown passes, the Buffs opted for run plays on each of their last four shots to take the lead. And the Bears defense that was on the field for 114 plays in Arizona and allowed 49 points, and 110 plays allowing 56 points on Saturday, found a way to make a play.

“Throughout the whole week, throughout the whole camp, spring ball, Coach (Art) Kaufman has always talked about, ‘play the next play,’ so whatever happened the play before that, forget it, wipe it clean, you have one more play to play,” Nickerson recounted.

The Bears look to carry their momentum into next Saturday’s trip to Pullman to face Washington State at 7:30pm.

NCAA Commentary: USC on right track with third win; FSU Winston throws for 365 yds

by Michelle Richardson

USC (3-1) 31-Oregon State (3-1) 10-USC has always been strong the Trojans throughout their history have had defenses that knew how to handle quarterbacks and the opposing lines. Oregon State not so much but it does compare to USC head coach Pete Sarkisian’s defense and their there for business to do work and get USC the ball.

That has always been the key in So Cal’s offensive production because the defense tires out the opposing offense or overpower the offensive line which happened against Oregon State on Saturday. That’s pretty much what the Trojans are doing right now. Their keeping their offense fresh and ready to go and they get the ball back for the quarterback and the quarterbacks do what they need to be doing.

Florida State (4-0) 56 vs. NC State (4-1) 41- The Seminoles had a tough game last week against Clemson where FSU quarterback Jameis Winston wasn’t allowed to play. That’s the one thing about this team, they aren’t as good as they were last year. They realized they lost some very tough weapons and they have to make up for that and their playing with more heart now than they played last year.

Winston got to come back Saturday and he threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns and missing one week will make you rest and think things over. He got to rest for two weeks because he came off the win at the Citadel on Sep 6th 37-12 and FSU had a bye the next week before they were to come home and play Clemson and previous to making his obscene remarks in the FSU student cafe.

Winston sat out the bye week and the Clemson game the following week, for Winston’s ignorant remarks he was out for two weeks of action and your only good for the last time you played. Winston played against a team Citadel and was almost taken out in the second half of that game. He really needs to get that ball in his hands and make things happen he certainly did against NC State on Saturday.

Fresno State (2-3) 35 vs. New Mexico State (1-3) 24- When Mexico State hired Bob Davie for head coach he’s not the right guy. He’s better than Mike Locksley the previous coach and the Lobos are playing a little better but he’s just not that guy. Fresno State went into New Mexico St and they handled their business. New Mexico they were turning over the ball for the Lobos it was just yuk.

Fresno State went in and did what they had to do and keep playing hard in order to make their goal for a bowl game. I’m at a loss of words to describe what that game was, UNM I think they can be good, if they can get the players they could be good. As far as the coaching is concerned the Lobos head coach Davie is really not the right guy for the job.

There has to be some candidate out there that can make it happen at UNM but right now it’s more of the same. That’s been going on for over a decade. The Lobos haven’t had any winning season since 2007 since the last time they went to a bowl game. The Lobos keep trying and they keep hoping, they have a lot of potential on that team and they have players who can get things going. It comes down to the leadership and Davie is not the right coach.

NCAA Commentary: Winston sits or warms up as Seminoles win; Bears almost clear Wildcats; Alabama offense has record day

by Michelle Richardson

Florida State University (3-0) quarterback Jameis Winston sat all throughout the Seminoles victory over the Clemson Tigers (1-2) 23-17 on Saturday. Winston was sitting over a half game suspension for yelling an anti women’s obscenity in the Florida State cafeiteria in front of fellow students. The fact that Winston is a Hiesman Trophy winning starting quarterback at the premier school in the nation and jumped up on a table in the cafeteria in the middle of the student union and yelled out an obscenity warranted a full game suspension.

I don’t care what the other factors are, I’m glad that Florida State administrators saw the light on this and acted. Winston also was warming up despite being suspended for the first half of the game we don’t know what that is about. There is just a question why Winston was in full pads and warming up when he was suspended for the whole game. Winston looked dumbfounded when he was ordered to go back in the locker room by Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Winston looked like he couldn’t believe that he was being sent back and had to change out of his uniform. Sean McGuire did a great job at quarterback going 305 yards, 21 completions, one touchdown and he was sacked five times. I ran into some Clemson fans and they said Clemson lost that game and I said, “Clemson didn’t lose that game it was the defensive line that won that game for Florida State” FSU had all of their starters in. It was a very good game and the star of that game was FSU tight end Nick O’Leary who had six catches and made the key catches that helped Florida St gain some ground on.

Arizona (4-0) just edges Cal (2-1) 49-45: The Cal Bears lost just by a game winning Hail Mary pass and this is a huge improvement for a team that won only one game all last season and almost beat Arizona which would have been their first Pac 12 victory since 2012. The Bears came into Tucson with a 2-0 record to face the Wild Cats. It takes great new leadership to make things like this happen and since former head coach Jeff Tedford’s departure and Sonny Dykes who took over last season things have improved.

Tedford had been there a little too long and the Bears needed some new blood and they got that. The bigger story is that Hail Mary that Arizona threw to win that game it reminded me of a game between Georgetown and Villanova in basketball. It ain’t over until it’s over, you never count anything out until you have zeros lined up on the clock. That’s an embarrassing situation for Cal losing by four and a squeaker for Cal.

Dykes has been turning the tide and when they play a game like that against Arizona that means the Bears are turning and their turning in the right direction. They got a couple of wins in before their visit to Arizona. The best possible chance for the Bears in the longest of longest chances a possible lower level Bowl game.

Alabama’s quarterback Blake Sims with great offensive day: This is what Alabama (4-0) does when you really look at it they win ball games like this with the Saturday win over Florida (2-1) 42-21. Alabama Wide receiver Amari Cooper caught ten passes for 201 yards, and three touchdowns giving him 20 receiving touchdowns for his career that’s a school record in Alabama. This is what Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban does his quarterbacks just air it out.

Alabama is one of those teams that once they put their foot on your neck they don’t ever want to take it off. This was a powerful showing and everybody in the SEC knows Alabama is here and their the team to beat. Alabama quarterback Blake Sims had a career day throwing for 445 yards for 23 completions and four touchdowns, Sims threw an 87 yard touchdown pass to Kenyan Drake on the first series and a 79 yard touchdown to Cooper.

Sims was besides himself in disbelief of his performance, “I didn’t think it was possible, I just try to take what I take and what the defense gives me, and just try to trust my guys that they’re going to be there” Saban was impressed too and said that other teams who try to defend Sims give Sims respect as the opposing quarterback, “people have to respect his passing, he has made too many plays for people not to respect him as a passer” said Saban.

NCAA Football Commentary: Fla St will face formable Clemson; N.Dakota a force in the MVC;Oregon-Wash St could be a close match

by Michelle Richardson

Florida State (3-0) ranked number one: Clemson (1-1) is coming down to Bill Campbell Stadium to face the undefeated and number one ranked Florida Seminoles and this game is expected to be electric and everybody remembers what happened last year to Clemson in Death Valley as the Seminoles defeated Clemson by a landslide 51-14. Don’t get too overly impressed by anything that Clemson has done they come into Saturday’s game 1-1.

Clemson got trounced 45-21 by Georgia in week one and then they trounced South Carolina State 73-7 last Saturday. So with Clemson coming to Florida State this week this is going to be good. Florida State is coming off a bye week their going to be fresh and you can expect Florida State to be prepared for this game. The Seminoles are the favorites but if you start noticing other teams in the ACC they are really coming up.

Louisville (2-1), Syracuse (2-0), most of the ACC teams are playing really well likewise for some non-ACC teams, Boston College, Duke, and USC is in the house the ACC wants other teams to take notice that their here and nobody is going to take that away.

North Dakota State Bison (3-0): North Dakota State is one of the best kept secrets they were ranked number one in the FCS Coaches poll this week and they’ve been going strong for over five years now. The Bison have been challenging everybody to all new comers. North Dakota State their definitely going to do their damage and their a MVC champion.

The Bison have been around awhile and they’ve conistantly good, their quarterback Carson Wentz has thrown for 45 completions, for 633 yards and three touchdowns, running back John Crockett has carried for 56 times for 341 yards, and receiver Zach Vraa leads the Bison with ten receptions for 139 yards, and is averaging 13 yards per catch.

The Bison are not a team to overlook and the MVC is basically is a treasure trove of talent and people look past because their too busy looking at the big five conferences.

Oregon (3-0) 48 vs.Wyoming (2-1) 14: The Oregon Ducks maybe 3-0 but they really haven’t faced anybody yet, they should beat a school like Wyoming and that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Your supposed to beat Wyoming. Next week the Ducks get into the Pac 12 opening up their first conference game against Washington State (1-2).

This game will be at Washington State and you can bet that Cougar Nation will be ready for the Ducks at Pullman, I don’t expect the Cougars to win this game but I do expect the Cougars to be competitive. This will be an interesting match up this Saturday. One thing about conference play, there are a couple of teams in the conference that will have to fight to get by.

Oregon they cruised over Wyoming and they were supposed to, you have to do that in the Pac 12 as well as outside of the Pac 12.

NCAA Football commentary: Alabama slip in polls but wins big; Ducks score four unaswered TDs; Fla St is number one

by Michelle Richardson

Alabama 41 Florida Atlantic 0: As I keep telling people this is going to be a real different year for Alabama. It’s going to be harder because their going to be fighting for those four top spots to get into the playoffs. Alabama is fighting just as hard with the other schools to get into the top four spots that’s how hard Georgia and LSU are fighting to be there.

Alabama has been on top a good five years and they’ve won five consecutive ACC Championships. With schools like that they stop getting the top recruits because they have so much fire power and that student athlete will think “if I go to some other school I’ll be the third or second in line” the thought here is the rich keep getting richer and that the way it is getting that top spot in college football.

I’m not really worried about Alabama just yet because their not into conference play, if this continues into conference play and if they beat Florida like what their suppose to do these games won’t be over for another three years and most of these games will be scheduled at least four years in advance. In about three or four years all of these money games will come to an end and Alabama knows they’ll have to make up time and points the next week.

Oregon 46-Michigan State 27: I’ll be honest I was very surprised, I had Michigan State winning this game, this was going to be the turnaround season where Michigan State really was going to stand up and take over the Big Ten. They still are likely able to take over the Big Ten but they couldn’t get past Oregon last Saturday.

Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 17 completions, 318 yards, for three touchdowns inspite of getting sacked three times. Michigan State was behind at the half 24-18, Oregon came back with four unanswered touchdowns after Michigan State scored four straight times unanswered. Oregon knows how to win and they’ve been doing it well for the past ten years, even with the change of coaching they still manage to be on top.

This is very interesting as Oregon is on top in the Pac 12 and number two in the AP Poll, it’s going to be Oregon and UCLA in the Pac 12 Championship, one of those teams will end up in one of the top four slots.

Florida State is number one in the AP Poll: The Florida State Seminoles are number one because they haven’t lost and they won’t stop winning until you tell them their not the champions. They haven’t lost a game they beat Citadel and Oklahoma State and are 2-0 and they beat both of them soundly. Even Oklahoma State by six points.

Everybody says they didn’t win so big and for Oklahoma State it’s not like dropping off the bridge it’s the first game nobody didn’t play football since last January and Oklahoma State hadn’t played since last December. So let’s just quit the panic over one game. Florida State will be number one but they’ll drop into the polls because they go into a bye week this weeek.

Though the Seminoles will go and play Clemson, and Clemson is coming to Doak Campbell Stadium on September 20th, beating Clemson at home at Doak Campbell really means something. Clemson is going to be out for blood simply because Florida State went to Death Valley last year and handed Clemson one heck of a beat down on their way to the Natonal Championship.

Cal flying high after blowout of Sacramento State, move to 2-0

By Morris Phillips

Buying in and getting rewarded. With a painful, lesson-filled year in the rear-view mirror, the Cal Bears are finally getting an opportunity to see how the process of becoming a winning football team works.

For the second week in a row, the Bears got off to a fast start offensively and they went on to bury Sacramento State, 55-14, in their home opener at Memorial Stadium. Cal scored touchdowns on their first six possessions of the game, building a 42-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

“That is what the offense is supposed to look like,” head coach Sonny Dykes said. “We are doing a good job of taking what they are giving us. Last week, we had an 18-play drive to start the game and this week it as a 15-play drive. That is a hard thing to do—to be able to play and execute at that level for that many plays.”

Jared Goff finished 17 for 22 passing and an extended group of Cal backs combined for 253 yards rushing as the Bears were too balanced and too good for their outmatched FCS opponent from the state capital. The only negative for Cal was 10 penalties for 100 yards, as they not only played well but saw numerous guys contribute outside the two starting units.

It was fun to get to play that many players,” Dykes said. “Those guys work incredibly hard in practice. I told our scout team guys that I think they are the best scout group I have ever been around. They work incredibly hard.”

Five running backs and three quarterbacks carried at least once, contributing to Cal’s impressive 5.4 yards per rush attempt.   Nine different Bears made at least one catch, led by Chris Harper’s five for 39 yards. Of both groups, Kenny Lawler Jr. stood out with his great hands and catching ability, hauling in three balls and two touchdowns, including a 19-yarder on a spectacular one-handed grab that put Cal up 28-0 near the conclusion of the first quarter.

“He’s ridiculous,” quarterback Jared Goff said of Lawler. “There is no other way to describe it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone catch balls the way he does and it’s not the best catch I’ve ever seen him make.”

Dykes’ “Bear Raid” offense which took so much criticism in 2013 has—at least through two weeks of 2014—shown the ability to put opposing defenses on their heels from the start. Cal led 14-0 early against Northwestern last week and went above and beyond that against Sacramento St. Unlike last season, the Bears have displayed the ability to move the football and wear down opponents.

“I talked to Coach Dykes briefly about it and asked him if this is how it’s supposed to look and he said ‘Yeah this is how it’s supposed to be. The offense executed very well in the first half and I was very happy with it,” Goff said.

The Bears now get two weeks to prepare for Arizona and the possibility of a 3-0 start that almost no one would have thought possible. Given that, Dykes cautioned his team during a celebratory moment in the post-game locker room that they need to get better. That and not have any Saturday night incidents of immaturity or over exuberance following their big win.

One less obvious sign of growth would have to be the play of Cal’s linebackers and secondary, where a bushel of the defensive breakdowns occurred last season. This year, both units appear to be quicker and at least through two games, linebacker Jalen Jefferson looks like an all-conference level performer.

Hornets’ quarterback Garrett Safron led his team in passing and running with 149 yards through the air and 60 yards rushing on nine carries. Receiver DeAndre Carter contributed a team-best seven catches for 72 yards.

NCAA Commentary: Cal might have something there with upset in Northwestern; USC’s Shaw story jumping to conclusions

by Michelle Richardson

What a shocker by Cal in a 31-24 win over Northwestern: I was one of the people with my mouth open because the Cal Bears took my card in the pick em, this could be the tide turning for Cal. They’ve had some many years in missing bowl games and last year they won only one game and maybe former head coach Jeff Tedford’s exit might have brought in a change and right now it’s new blood with head coach Sonny Dykes.

Part of that new blood is new students and a new attitude at Cal, I always say sometimes it takes a change in management to change how a place works and I’m hoping that there is another team in the Pac 12 that will be competitive this year. If you rank the big time conferences the Pac 12 is at the bottom. UCS is not impressive, Stanford I’m not sure if they’re kind of a bubble team or a team that’s been pretty much running the Pac 12 the last few years.

Mike Leach at Washington State took over and made the Cougars his team and the team has got better and better every year. This is his third year and all of those recruits are all his, I’m looking forward to seeing whats going on and not like USC whose changed coaches in the last few years. I’m very excited that Cal turned it around and beat a team in the Big Ten and their hoping to be number one and to show some strength in their schedule.

Notre Dame’s win over Rice 48-17 not surprising: Don’t get confused this win by the Fighting Irish is not a tone setter for the season, it’s Rice its not going to set any tone unless your playing Rice in baseball I’d say no. Notre Dame was supposed to win this game and win this game handedly. Had Rice won I would tell you that Norte Dame could stick a fork in it.

This is not a game where you can say Notre Dame beat Rice the Fighting Irish are going all the way, no there not, I need to see the Irish play a Michigan and play more top ten teams. When Notre Dame starts getting into their part of the ACC schedule we’ll see. The Irish play Michigan for the last time this year we’ll see then. Right now no, that game meant nothing except that’s the first game of the season for the Lucky Charms.

USC controversies: Josh Shaw’s fake balcony jump and he was also named in a burglary report in L.A. I don’t feel sorry for him and I know he’s a young man and he’ll make mistakes but he lied and said he went and jumped do really think somebody is going to follow up on that? His nephew was drowning and he jumped two stories do think people are going to follow up on that. USC is going to follow up on that because the school is concerned now about their reputation.

You have the L.A.Times and Sports Illustrated making this a national story is Shaw stupid? Then there is the fact that he lied. You could lie about a whole lot of things but you don’t lie about people’s lives being in peril and you don’t lie about people dying. Because you believe in karma and it mighht come back on you in a bad way.

That was just a horrible, horrible, thing that Shaw did and I truly, truly hope that he learned his lesson and he’s eligble for the NFL draft, doesn’t Shaw know he’s affecting his draft stock? My thing is if Shaw just said he jumped off the balcony and he did something stupid and he hurt his ankle that would show more character than saying he saved two kids from a burning building. This lying is ridiculous and you put yourself in a bad position with the team over something that was completely stupid and illegal, I don’t have a place for you on my team.
