Sacramento Kings game wrap: Kings Lose Seventh In A Row to Pelicans 117-110

By Barbara Mason

With the regulation season approaching the final lap, team’s are fighting for that eighth spot. The eighth spot is a very real possibility for a few teams but the Sacramento Kings and the New Orleans Pelicans are probably not one of them. The Kings were defeated in New Orleans for their seventh straight loss 117-110 to the Pelicans on Monday night.

The Pelicans have made a bit of a move and are now in 11th place, three games behind the eighth place Grizzlies. With roughly have 19 games left in the regular season; now is the time to make a move for both of these teams. The Kings are 22-31 and in 12th place; a full five games behind the Grizzles. A win tonight is exactly what the Kings are gearing up for. They have lost six games in a row and desperately need a win.

The Kings started off the game on a slow note. The Pelicans led after one quarter 31-19. The second quarter did not go well for the Kings either. They trailed going into the locker room at the half 68-45. Sacramento had a lot of ground to make up in the second half. The Kings were having trouble stopping the Pelican offense. This is not surprising since the team has suffered with poor defense all season.

The Kings would need starters Richaun Holmes, Harrison Barnes, and Tyrese Haliburton to really step up in the second half. The Kings made up a lot of ground in the third quarter. They trailed 86-74 cutting their half time deficit in half. De’Aaron Fox was having a great game with 31 points through three quarters.

The Kings would pull to within four points of New Orleans but just plain ran out of clock. The slow start in this game came back to bite them in the rear resulting in the disappointing loss.

De’Aaron Fox had the high score of the game with 43 points for the Kings. Harrison Barnes finished with 16 points and Maurice Harkless had 15. The Pelicans Brandon Ingram had 34 points and Zion Williamson had 30. This loss is the seventh in a row for Sacramento.

On Wednesday evening the Kings will take on the Wizards. Tip off is at 7:00 PM.

#2 The A’s got a big 7-3 win over the Astros on Saturday that included a two run home run from Ramon Laureano for his first home run of the season.

#3 The A’s run production came up with two runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings something they lacked in those first six games and stayed ahead for the series win.

#4 The A’s got pitching help from starter Frankie Montas going six innings giving up six hits and one run, reliever Sergio Romo threw for two thirds of an inning giving up one hit and two runs. A’s relievers Jake Diekman and JB Wendelken shutout the Astros for the rest of way.

#5 The A’s open a brief two game series in Arizona against the Diamondbacks who have lost six out of their last ten games. The D-Backs are in dead last at 3-6 but the season is still early. The A’s will start Chris Bassitt whose looking for his first win of the season (0-2 ERA 5.56) the Diamondbacks will counter with Madison Bumgarner (0-1 ERA 11.00) since coming to the Diamondbacks he’s struggles and in his last outing he surrendered five runs on eight hits to the Rockies.

Barracuda route Reign in 5-1 victory

The San Jose Barracuda share congratulations after their win over Ontario Reign at the Toyota Sports Performance Center in El Segundo on Sun Apr 11, 2021 (@sjbarracuda photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

EL SEGUNDO, Calif—The San Jose Barracuda scored three goals in the first period as they dominated the Ontario Reign in a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Toyota Sports Performance Center.

San Jose’s win gave them 24 points as they continue to occupy fourth place in the Pacific Division and the final playoff spot. Ontario have lost four of its past five games.

The Barracuda (9-8-4-2) opened the scoring early on in the first period. Alex True picked up the puck after a multi-player collision along the right boards and quickly found a wide open Sasha Chmelevski in front of the crease and he snapped home a wrist shot past Reign goalie Matt Villalta for his first goal of the game and his fourth goal at the 4:00 mark.

Chmelevski didn’t take long to double the ‘Cuda’s lead to 2-0. Once again it was True setting up his winger. True spun away from an Ontario defender and found Chemelevski in the right slot. The Orange County native then fired home a wrist shot top-shelf past Villalta for his two-goal afternoon and fifth of the season at the 6:36 mark.

Ontario (9-15-3-0) cut the lead in half just under two minutes later. A failed clearing attempt by San Jose was intercepted by Lias Andersson and he sent the puck back up to the point where Austin Strand fired a shot through a body of traffic past ‘Cuda goalie Zachary Sawchenko for this first goal of the season at the 9:04 mark.

San Jose regained its two-goal lead when Nicolas Meloche led an odd-man rush down the left wing. Meloche centered a pass over to Brinson Pasichnuk who lasered home a wrist shot top-shelf past Villalta for his first career AHL goal at the 13:52 mark.

The Barracuda outshot the Reign 10-9 in the opening frame.

San Jose went up 3-1 more than halfway through in the second period as Scott Reedy also scored his first career AHL goal. Joel Kellman sent a cross ice pass from the right slot over to Reedy who beat Villalta with a well placed wrist shot at the 13:52 mark.

The Barracuda out shot the Reign 13-11 in a penalty free middle frame.

San Jose put the game way late in the third period when Jacob Middleton intercepted a pass inside the ‘Cuda zone. Middleton raced down the ice on a breakaway where his initial shot was saved by Villalta but the veteran defenseman cleaned up his own rebound with a backhander for his third goal of the season at the 14:25 mark.

Sawchenko finished the game stopping 29 of the 30 shots he faced to earn the victory. Villalta made 27 saves on 32 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose went 0-for-2 on the power play. Ontario was 0-for-1.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Chmelevski 2) True 3) Pasichnuk

DeSclafani goes six in 4-0 shutout win to sweep Rockies

San Francisco Giants pitcher Anthony DeSclafani was the winning pitcher of record going six innings against the Colorado Rockies at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sun Apr 11, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO-Anthony DeSclafani made a great impression before the home crowd for the San Francisco Giants.

DeSclafani, pitching at Oracle Park for the first time as a member of the Giants, pitched six strong shutout innings, allowing zero runs on eight hits, walking just one and striking out eight, as the Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies 4-0 before a crowd of 6,560 at Oracle Park.

This is the fourth straight win for the Giants and they have won five out of their last six, all over division opponents.

With the victory, the Giants completed their first sweep of the Rockies at Oracle Park for the first time since June 26-28, 2017.

Alex Dickerson gave DeSclafani instant offense in the bottom of the first inning, as he took a German Marquez pitch and put it into the center field bleachers to give the Giants a quick 1-0 lead.

The biggest play of the game will not appear in the box score, but it was a stolen base by Brandon Belt that manufactured the second run of the first inning by the Giants.

Following the Dickerson home run, Belt walked and then with Evan Longoria at the plate, Belt stole second without a throw and standing up.

On the very next pitch to Longoria, he put it into center field to score Belt with a huge second run of the inning.

After that rough first inning, where he threw 35 pitches, Marquez settled down, as he only allowed two more hits until the bottom of the sixth inning.

It was in that sixth inning, that with one out that Belt launched a solo home run onto the arcade for his first home run of the season.

LaMonte Wade, Jr. made his Giants debut and it was a memorable one, as he singled, doubled and walked in his first three at-bats before flying out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Giants tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Evan Longoria drove in Mike Yastrzemski, who doubled with one out in the inning.

NOTES: Reyes Moronta was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right flexor strain and Wade, Jr. was recalled from the alternate site to take his spot on the roster.

Also before the game, the Giants received infielder Thairo Estrada from the New York Yankees for cash considerations. Estrada will report to the Giants alternate site, while outfielder Jaylin Davis was recalled and placed on the 60-day disabled list with left knee patella tendinitis.

Entering the game, Giants’ starting pitchers have tossed 5.0-or-more innings and allowed three-or-fewer runs in each of SF’s first eight games…only twice in the modern era have the Giants had a longer streak to begin a season (2002 & 1937)…the rotation has posted a 2.61 ERA, the third best figure in the National League behind Miami (2.01) and Milwaukee (2.08), (Stats, LLC).

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the first ever regular season game at what is now known as Oracle Park.

On April 11, 2000, Kirk Rueter threw the first pitch in what was then called Pacific Bell Park to Devon White, who singled to right field; however, it was the Kevin Elster show that day, as he hit three home runs and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Giants 6-5 before a sellout crowd of 40,930. Barry Bonds hit the first Giants home run in the new ballpark, as he hit a solo home run off of Chan Ho Park.

Bay Area native Ed Montague was the home plate umpire for that inaugural game.

UP NEXT: Aaron Sanchez looks for his first win of the season, as he takes for the Giants on Monday night in the opener of the three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds, who will send left-hander Wade Miley to the mound, as he looks for his second win of the season.
