On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Bay Conservation and Development Commission who are to vote on Jun 2 on the Howard Terminal ballpark and project development said they will vote to move forward with the project and A’s president Dave Kaval called it a “massive deal.”

#2 Kaval said that with the vote from the Oakland City Council and now with the assurance of the BCDC it looks as if the project has a good chance to move forward.

#3 The East Oakland Stadium Alliance filed a lawsuit said that environmental protocols weren’t followed and that the Alliance wants the ballpark built at the existing location here at the Oakland Coliseum.

#4 Amaury not to mention there are shipping, steel, and the port groups that have filed environmental impact violation lawsuits against the project. The Alliance spokesman says the city process failed to meet environmental standards regarding the luxury condominiums, office and retail development.

#5 Kaval added that removing port designation puts the A’s on a path towards building at Howard Terminal.

Rays scored twice in third and forth innings defeat A’s 6-1; A’s play in front of smallest crowd of season

Tampa Bay. 6. 11. 0

Oakland. 1. 2. 2

Monday May 2, 2022

By Lewis Rubman

OAKLAND–The Oakland A’s (10-13) started this season by dropping a three game series to the Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love. They righted the ship by taking three out of four in St. Petersburg, the retirement community that is home to the Salvador Dalí Museum and the monstrosity known as Tropicana field. The A’s took it on the chin on Monday night at the Oakland Coliseum with a 6-1 loss to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays (13-10) to open a three game set.

By April 19 they reached the giddy heights of 7-5 and a tie with the Angels for first place in the AL West. Oakland finished the month at 10-11, last in their division

They continued to decline at the start of this month. Their 7-3 May Day loss to Cleveland wasn’t a distress call, but it wasn’t a harbinger of a smooth passage to the extended playoffs. Indeed, it completed the Guardians’ sweep of the three game series between the two teams.

The pitcher who earned the green and gold their first win of the season was Daulton Jefferies. He has pitched decently, in spite of losing to Toronto, Baltimore, and San Francisco in his three post Tampa Bay starts, only one of which lasted more than 4-1/3 innings.

Jefferies took the mound tonight with a record of 1-3 ERA 3.26, hoping to spark a turn around similar to the one that followed his start in the bailiwick of tonight’s opponents, the Rays. At least he wouldn’t have to deal with catwalks and artificial turf.

It did, however, have to deal with a team that is 12-10 in spite of its current two game losing streak, during which they scored only four runs against The Twins, who crossed the plate 18 times.

Their choice to face the A’s was right hander Drew Rasmussen, who brought his record to 1-1ERA 3.50 by going six innings to gain his first win of the season by defeating the Mariners in Seattle, allowing only a walk, a single, and a double.

Back at the Coliseum, a select group of 2,288 spectators saw the Rays crush the A’s, shortly after the Bay Area Conservation and Development Commission voted to approve the proposed Howard Terminal Stadium.

Yandy Díaz started things off for the visitors by parking Jefferies´sixth pitch, an 80mph curve on a 1-2 count, 407 feet into the staircase to the right of the nearly empty left field seats.

Oakland countered that long ball with some small ball in the bottom of the second. Seth Brown worked a two out 3-2 count for a walk and, with Chad Pinder at bat, stole second. Pinder’s single to right center knotted this score.

Wander Franco unknotted it for the Rays, with a little help from Cristián Pache, in Tampa Bay´s next AB. With Díaz on first with a lead off single, Franco singled to center and a charging Pache let the ball bounce over his head.

Franco reached third on the two base error and came home on Randy Arozarená’s single to center, but that was all the scoring the Rays were able to muster in that frame. Nonetheless, they had stretched their lead to 3-1.

Mike Zunino, whose BA wasn’t even half way up to the Mendoza line, got only his third RBI of the season by singling Manuel Margot, who had led off with a double, home and then advanced his lumbering frame to second on the throw, scoring one out later on Franco’s single to right. The score now stood at 5-1 in favor of the visitors.

It was 6-1 after 4-1/2. Margot’s two out two bagger plated Kevin Kiermaier with two down was responsible for the additional tally.

Jefferies didn’t come out to pitch in the sixth. He had managed to throw 90 pitches, 60 of which were considered strikes, in his five innings of work. All six of the runs scored against him were earned.

They came on 11 hits, one of which left the park. He struck out four but didn’t walk anyone. He was the losing pitcher. Oakland’s new pitcher was Domingo Acevedo, who retired six of the seven hitters he faced over the next two innings. The only exception was Franco, who reached on an error by Elvis Andrus in the sixth.

Rasmussen’s night’s work also ended after five innings. His other numbers were quite different from Jeffries’. The Rays’ starter allowed but one hit and one, earned, run, while striking out three and walking one.

He would get the win. Jason Adam replaced him in the sixth and set the A’s down in order before passing the baton to Phoenix Sanders. Sanders gave up the Athletics’ second hit of the night, a bunt single by Jed Lowrie.

Sam Moll was Oakland’s third hurler, taking over to start the eighth and setting the Rays down 1,2,3 with two strikeouts. Ryan Thompson, in turn, pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth for Tampa Bay.

Adam Kolarek finished up for the Athletics, retiring all three batters he confronted. Indeed, Oakland’s bullpen was nearly perfect. The only baserunner it allowed in its four innings on the mound came on Andrus’s error in the sixth frame.

Andrew Kittridge threw a perfect ninth for the Rays.

Oakland’s ace, Paul Blackburn will get the start on Tuesday night 3-0 ERA 1.35 mark against Tampa Bay pitcher to be announced in the second game of the current. series. Game time will be 6:40 at the Oakland Coliseum.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: A’s host Rays after losing three straight to Cleveland

The Cleveland Guardians starter Triston McKenzie goes into his stretch in the first inning against the Oakland A’s at the Oakland Coliseum on Sun May 1, 2022 (AP News photo)

On That’s Amaury’s podcast:

#1 For the first time in 22 years that brings us back to the year 2000 the Cleveland Guardians (10-12) swept the Oakland A’s (10-12) in Sunday’s finale by a score of 7-3. But just to the history of those 22 years that’s a long time does that say something about how penetrable the A’s were in this series or the Guardians were just that good?

#2 Guardians starter Triston McKenzie went 6.1 innings of shutout ball against the A’s and very well could have gone the distance if it weren’t for the pitch count.

#3 A’s pitching did wonders for the Guardians Franmil Reyes who entered Sunday’s game with a 1-27 slump but broke out with a third inning two RBI single in an inning where the Guardians scored three times.

#4 It was A’s pitcher James Kraprielian’s first time back after coming back from shoulder surgery Kaprielian ended up walking four batters and struggled and was lifted in the third inning going two plus innings, three hits on four earned runs and three strikeouts. Is his shoulder still a concern because Guardian hitters certainly saw the ball pretty well.

#5 The A’s will try it all over again tonight at the Coliseum as the A’s have lost six of their last eight games and will face the Tampa Bay Rays tonight the Rays will start Drew Rasmussen (1-1 ERA 3.50) and for the A’s Daulton Jefferies 1-3 ERA 3.26) first pitch at 6:40pm PDT.

Warriors Win Thriller In Memphis 117-116

By Barbara Mason

Ever since the Golden State Warriors finished off their series with the Denver Nuggets winning 4-1 the Warriors had all been wondering who their opponent in the semifinals would be. Friday night they got their answer when the Memphis Grizzlies finished off the Minnesota Timberwolves 114-106 winning the series 4-2.

This semifinal series started on the road for the Warriors at Fed Ex Forum winning the first game of the series in a narrow 117-116 victory to take a 1-0 lead. Golden State played in their seventh Western Conference semifinal in ten seasons.

The Warriors were healthy and ready for this game against a young, deep talented Memphis team. There is a history here. The Warriors rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the second round against Memphis back in 2015.

Ja Morant has put a real spark into the Grizzlies leading them into the semis for the first time in seven years. Their backcourt is one of the best in basketball making them an incredibly confident team. Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane are very strong offensive players for Memphis. They kept the Golden State defense on their toes throughout the contest.

The Warriors were coming off of a three day pause and were well aware of the challenge that lied ahead of them. This was kind of a role reversal with the Warriors coming in as a group of experienced veterans and the Grizzlies the youngsters.

In 2015 it was the opposite way around with Golden State being the younger team. Will the vast playoff experience help the Warriors in this series? We soon found out in this highly anticipated series.

Game 1 recap: The wait was finally over and the first quarter got underway. Memphis came out strong and led after 12 minutes 32-24. The Grizzlies extended their lead at the half 61-55.

The Warriors suffered a heavy blow when with 1:18 left in the second quarter Draymond Green was ejected from the game after committing a flagrant foul which was suspect at best. After two quarters of basketball the Warriors would have to dig deep especially with the loss of Green.

The Warriors won the third quarter 36-29 and took the lead after three 91-90 in a tight contest. The team was visibly upset after the ejection but pulled it together playing some great offense. One quarter remained in this game that Golden State wanted badly to win.

Jordan Poole was shooting lights out and was leading the team in shooting. He was single handedly trying to will his team to the win.

With 3:20 left in this game it was a dead heat tied at 108. At two minutes it was a tie 112-112 in a crazy Game One. With 1:17 left in the game the tie remained 114-114. The Warriors took a one point lead with 3.6 left on the clock. Ja Morant would miss a two point shot and the Warriors had won a hard-fought road game against a very tough Grizzly team.

Ja Morant was the high score for the Grizzlies with 34 points followed by Jaren Jackson Jr. with 33. Either team was in position to take this game and it all came down to that one missed shot by Morant who does not miss very often. It could have come down to youth and inexperience in that final shot.

Poole was the hero of this game with 31 points in 38 minutes. He was 5 of 10 from downtown in a brilliant game by the 22-year-old. Stephen Curry finished with 24 points and hung in there with five personal fouls.

Wiggins, Poole and Porter Jr. all had eight rebounds apiece in a nice defensive effort. While there is lots of room for improvement this was a great start in this series for Golden State. A road win in the NBA semifinals is huge for any team.

Game Two of this series is scheduled for Tuesday May 3rd in Memphis. Tipoff is 6:30 PM.

By Lewis Rubman

SAN FRANCISCO–Veteran pitcher Alex Cobb came off the injured list to start the rubber game of this weekend’s three game series for the San Francisco Giants (14-8) against the Washington Nationals (8-16). Cobb, who strained his right abductor muscle while pitching in New York against the Mets on April 19, brought a season record of 1-0 ERA 4.82.

A repertoire of two- and four-seam fastballs, along with curves and changeups, with him to the mound. Kervin Castro was optioned to Sacramento to make room for him. San Francisco’s starting pitcher should have, as Dizzy Dean once eloquently put it, “stood in bed.”

Cobb´s mound rival wasl 24 year old Josiah Gray, who came in at (2-2 ERA 4.05). The promising righty throws four seamers about half the time, followed, in descending order by curves and sliders with an occasional change of pace thrown in to keep things interesting.

The Nationals took an early and significant lead. César Hernández led off the game with a clean single to left, thanks to the infield playing in the shift. Next, Juan Soto lashed a vicious line drive up the middle that almost hit Cobb before landing in center field, moving Hernández up to center.

Nelson Cruz followed with a bouncing ball that looked as though it would result in an around the horn double play. But the pellet took a bad bounce over Jason Vosler for what originally was called a run-producing double that put Soto 90 feet from home.

The scorer later changed that to an error on SF’s third sacker. Josh Bell made the first out, grounding to first, the runners holding Yadier Hernández then singled to center, scoring both runners. After Maikel Franco flew out to left, Cobb walked Kaibert Ruíz and Víctor Robles, loading the bases.

Number nine hitter With Lucius Fox at bat, everyone moved up a base on a balk called by home plate umpire Ben May, which meant that Yadiel Hernández scored. Fox then got his first major league hit and RBI, beating out a ground ball to short and driving in Ruíz. and moving Robles over to third.

With César Hernández, at bat for the second time in the opening frame, walked, Cobb was done for the day. His line was 2-1/3 innings pitched, five runs allowed, only one of which was earned, four hits, and three walks. He threw 40 pitches, 18 of which were balls, and his ERA rose to 5.40. He would be saddled with the loss.

Southpaw Sam Long took over and struck Soto out swinging and stayed in the game until fellow lefty Jarlín García relieved him to start the DC fourth. In his 2-1/3 innings on the hump, Long allowed a hit and two walks but no runs. His lone K was the inning ending one that ended the Giants’ horrendous first episode.

García retired the first five Nationals he faced. He surrendered a single to the sixth, Ruíz, with two out in top of the fifth and gave way to the right handed Yunior Marte, who got Robles out on a called third strike.

Meanwhile, Gray just kept cruising along. He didn’t allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth, when with two outs, Krizan got his first major league safety, a hard line drive to right. Bart followed that with a walk, Gray’s third of the afternoon. It was the first time that the home team had a runner in scoring position all game.

Gray issued a free pass to González, and suddenly the bases were fog, full of Giants. Then, the count, too, was full And Gray delivered a slider … swung on and missed. The score remained 5-0 in favor of the visitors after five.

Then Marte suffered a fate similar to that of Cobb a couple of hours earlier. Fox led off with his second leg single, beating out a grounder to second. After César Hernández lined out to center, Soto singled up the middle, past a diving Estrada, who just missed snaring the ball, while the speedy Fox made it to third.

With Cruz at the plate, Marte uncorked a wild pitch that brought Fox home and Soto to reach third. He came home when Cruz lifted a sacrifice fly to right center.

Marte finished out his inning, getting Bell to fly out, but it was Tyler Beede who started the top of the seventh on the mound for the home team, yielding a lead off double off the left center field fence to Yadier Hernández..

Two outs later, Robles sent a grounder past a sprawling Vosler and into left field to bring Hernández and put the capitol crew up, eight-zip.

Victor Arano took over for Washington after the seventh inning stretch. Gray had thrown 93 pitches, 50 counting as strikes, over six innings of one hit ball in which he walked four, delivered one wild pitch, and struck out three opposing batters. He would be the winning pitcher

Arano lasted a third of an inning, leaving with the bases loaded and a run in, thanks to singles by Estrada, Vosler, and González who hit drove in the run, and a walk to Bart. Kyle Finnegan was brought in to keep the Giants from further reducing their deficit.

He walked Ruf, forcing in Vosler. Flores forced Ruf out at second on a grounder to short but, in a bang-bang play, beat out the relay to first, which enabled Bart to score from third.

Crawford walked on a full count, reloading the bases and putting the potential tying run at the plate in the person of the powerful recent addition to the roster, Mike Ford, who faced Steve Cishek, who was brought into the game to stop the hemorrhaging.

Ford drove in González and Ruf with a hard single to left that put Crawford on third. After Cishek got Estrada to fly out to left for the final out, the Giants were trailing by only 8-5. The first four runs of the Giants rally were charged to Arano; only the last was charged to Finnegan.

Jake McGee, who took over for San Francisco in the eighth, ran into trouble early. He walked César Hernández, who went to third on Soto’s single to right. Soto advanced to second on Cruz’s broken bat ground out to Crawford, but Hernández didn’t try to advance.

The Giants decided to grant Bell an intentional walk, which set up Yadíél Hernández’s bases-clearing triple to right center. McGee had no trouble retiring Franco and Ruíz, but the Nats now had a comfortable 11-5 advantage over their hosts.

Camilo Doval was the Giants’ seventh and final pitcher of the distressing afternoon, having been given the task of mopping up the mess the Nats had made of the orange and black bullpen. He struck out the side. Although what Doval accomplished wasn’t too little, it sure was too late.

Tanner Rainey took care of the Giants in the ninth, allowing only a single to Ruf, and fanning González to put an end to the misery It took three hours and 37 minutes to happen.

There was no save for the Nationals, and no salvation for the Giants.

The team will have a day off tomorrow to recover before facing the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine for a quickie two game set and returning to the windy confines of Oracle Park for a four game series against the Cardinals. The Giants will start Carlos Rodon (3-0 ERA 1.17) and for Dodgers Julio Urias (1-1 ERA 2.50) a 7:10 pm PDT first pitch.
