Raiders Drop to 1-3 Losing to the Chargers 24-17

The Los Angeles Chargers (2-2) were able to get past the Las Vegas Raiders (1-3) Sunday afternoon thanks to Kalil Mack’s six sacks coupled with three Justin Herbert’s touchdowns. The final was 24-17 in favor of Los Angeles. The six sacks from Mack was a franchise record for a single game.

Sunday afternoon the NFL entered the fourth week of the season. The Raiders took on the Chargers in Inglewood at SoFi Stadium. The Raiders were without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who is still on concussion protocol and ruled out for today’s game.

Going into the game the Raiders had to choose between Aidan O’Connell, who was a fourth-round draft pick without a single regular season game under his belt. The other choice, another shaky one, Brian Hoyer who has not won an NFL start since October of 2016 and has lost 12 straight starts.

It’s a very concerning situation for the Raiders so early in the season. We’ve seen terrible quarterback situations throughout the NFL to start 2023 and we have also seen how it can disable an entire team.

After the opening quarter this game was tied at seven. The Chargers were first up on the scoreboard. Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert rushed for 12 yards at 10:38 taking the early 7-0. The Raiders answered right back when their quarterback rushed for one yard and a touchdown with .45 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter.

Los Angeles took over in the second quarter of the game. The Chargers got the quarter going with a 33 yard field goal. They would follow this up with a Herbert pass to Keenan Allen for seven yards and the Chargers had a 17-7 lead. Justin Herbert would score his second rushing touchdown of the game, this one another one yard rush. At the half, the Chargers had a 24-7 lead.

The Chargers did not score in the second half of play. The Raider defense held up their end of the deal but the Las Vegas offense not so much. They did score a field goal in the third quarter, a 22 yard kick from Daniel Carlson. The Raiders now trailed by the score of 24-10.

Las Vegas had an opportunity in the fourth quarter when Josh Jacobs rushed for one yard and the touchdown; they were seven points away from tying this game. Throughout the game, Khalil Mack recorded six sacks making life pretty miserable for O’Connell. The Raiders did have the ball in the closing minutes but failed to score. The final was 24-17.

It was an up and down game for the Raiders. O’Connell had three fumbles losing two of them and he also had an interception for the three turnovers. He passed for 238 yards. Josh Jacobs had eight catches for 81 yards and Davante Adams had 75 reception yards. Jacobs also turned in 58 rushing yards.

The Raiders had some great chances in the second half. Their defense held tight but the offense just came up short despite scoring twice, once in the third quarter and again in the final quarter. Las Vegas now drops to 1-3 for the season.

In week 5, the Raiders will meet the Green Bay Packers in a Monday night showdown. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 5:15 PM. The Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is projected to start this game.

McCaffery’s 4 touchdown day paces the 49ers in 35-16 rout of Cardinals

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffery leaps off an Arizona Cardinals defender on his to way a touchdown at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday OCT 1, 2023. (San Francisco 49ers)

Christian McCaffery set a franchise record on Sunday.

McCaffery scored four touchdowns for the San Francisco 49ers who dominated from start to finish in a 35-16 blowout victory over the Arizona Cardinals in an NFC West divisional showdown on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

The All-Pro running back set a new 49ers record for scoring a touchdown in 13 consecutive games, breaking the old mark of 12 set by Jerry Rice, when he scored his first rushing touchdown with 9:07 left in the first quarter on a one-yard scamper that completed an eight play 62-yard opening drive.

San Francisco has started the season 4-0 for the first time since 2019. Arizona dropped to 1-3 on the season.

McCaffery and the 49ers offense had its way with Arizona as they dominated the line of scrimmage that allowed for a fun day on the field. San Francisco went up 14-0 early in the second quarter when quarterback Brock Purdy pitched the ball back to McCaffery who rushed 18 yards for his second rushing touchdown.

After a Matt Prater 38-yard field goal, the 49ers marched back down the field on a five play 75-yard drive that concluded with Purdy connecting with McCaffery on a six-yard touchdown reception to give San Francisco a comfortable 21-3 lead.

“Yeah, it would’ve been nice”, said McCaffery with a laugh when asked if had campaigned to get a fifth touchdown late in the game. “He’s (49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan) obviously got a lot going on in-game. That’s the last of anyone’s worries to do that. So as long as we scored, I was happy.”

Arizona ended the first half when quarterback Josh Dobbs hooked up with rookie wide receiver Michael Wilson on a 16-yard touchdown reception with 23 seconds left in the second quarter.

The Cardinals forced a three and out on the 49ers first possession of the second half. San Francisco punter Matt Wishnowsky pinned Arizona at their own 1-yard line.

Dobbs then led an 11 play 99-yard scoring drive down the field that chewed up 4:12 off the clock. Dobbs connected once again with Wilson for their second straight touchdown reception, an eight yarder to cut San Francisco’s lead to 21-16. They failed on the two-point conversion.

McCaffery put the game away for the 49ers early in the fourth quarter when he run for his third touchdown of the game and fourth overall with a two-yard run. McCaffery finished the game with 177 all-purpose yards with 106 on the ground on 20 carries and 71 through the air on seven catches.

“He’s a freak. He does everything for us. He can run the ball, run routes out of the back field, line up a receiver (and) run routes. So, we’re thankful for him. All you gotta do is get the ball to him and he does the rest,” Purdy said.

Purdy completed with the scoring with 1:59 left in the game when his one-yard quarterback sneak up the middle for his second rushing touchdown of the season. Purdy finished 20 of 21 for 283 yards to go along with his one passing touchdown and no interceptions. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk led all receivers with six catches for 148 yards.

Dobbs finished 28 of 41 for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown led the Cardinals in receiving with seven catches for 96 yards. Running back James Connor chipped in with 52 yards on 11 carries.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 3-for-5 on third down conversions. Arizona went 8-for-15.

San Francisco has won 14 consecutive regular season games, their second longest streak in franchise history.

Purdy set the 49ers’ single-game record for completion percentage (20 of 21) at 95.2 percent. Previous record (20+ attempts) was Steve Young, 1991 vs. Detroit (18 of 20) 90 percent.

UP NEXT: San Francisco hosts the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football 10/8 at 5:20pm at Levi’s Stadium.

Oakland Finishes Off 2023 Season With Loss to Angels 7-3

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Michael Stefanic (38) waits for the throw as Oakland Athletics Esteury Ruiz (1) steals third base during the third inning at the Big A in Anaheim on Sun Oct 1, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the Oakland A’s (50-112) took on Los Angeles (73-89) at Angel Stadium. They were hoping to avoid losing the series and at the very least finish off the 2023 season with a win.

In the game two win over the Angels, the A’s reached the 50 win mark and had a chance to win this series. The A’s didn’t pass the third game of the series taste test and dropped their last game of the regular season with a 7-3 four run loss.

This game did not go well for the Athletics. Through six innings, the Angels scored in every inning with the exception of the second inning. They hit three home runs two of them off the bat of Brandon Drury and after six innings held a 7-0 lead.

Drury had a homer in the first inning and the second in the fifth inning, a two-run home run. In the third inning Randal Grichuk hit a solo homer and this game was all Angels. Going into the eighth inning Los Angeles held onto the lead allowing two Oakland runs.

The A’s finally scored in the seventh inning. Nick Allen singled Lawrence Butler home preventing an Angel shut-out.

In the eighth inning Oakland celebrated a special moment when Brent Rooker, at his final at bat in 2023, hit his 30th home run. This was for sure a little lemonade in this lemon of a season. Los Angeles held on. While this was certainly a disappointing season for the Angels, it was an unbelievably painful year for the Oakland A’s.

The A’s had eight hits in this game but only scored two runners. Los Angeles had ten hits cashing in bringing seven runners home. It was another disappointing appearance on the mound for JP Sears to finish this year off.

He allowed four hits and three runs and lasted only four innings. Kyle Muller relieved for one inning allowing three hits and three runs. It was another rough afternoon for the Oakland bullpen.

Rather than dwell on the season record one can turn to the last couple of months for the A’s. There has been growth among these players and the way they have evolved has been encouraging. It has been a season of steps forward and steps back.

Next season these guys will be a year older and they will have had an entire MLB season under their belts. This has been the worst Oakland season ever and you have to take your hats off to these young guys who persevered through incredible negative publicity, through the anticipated move issues that wove their way throughout the season, and just getting to know each other.

If this team remains intact, they will be miles better next season. The caveat always remains with this organization. Due to the horrible mismanagement of the Oakland front office this team is always behind the eight ball from the get go season after season.

They no sooner start to play great ball when the players who are succeeding are traded away leaving the coaches to pick up the pieces and start over. Selling this team to someone who cares is the only thing that makes any sense at all. What a shame to single handedly destroy a major league baseball team.

Giant lose season finale at Oracle 5-2 to Dodgers; Crawford plays final game for SF takes a curtain call

SAN FRANCISCO–This the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper. —T.S. Eliot, “The Hollow Men”

It wasn’t the end of the world, and the Giants’ season ended with both a whimper and a few bangs in a 5-2 loss to the NL West’s division winning Los Angeles Dodgers. Of course, one team’s bang is another team’s wimper, which is one of the beauties of baseball. Teams don’t compete to reach some abstract, context free goal; they play against each other.

Casey Stengel was right when he said that good pitching always beats good hitting and vice versa. The interplay between hitting and pitching, the confrontation, goes to the heart of the came. The Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset’s dictum applies: I am myself and my circumstances.

Brian Crawford received a two minute standing ovation just before the first pitch was thrown at 1:06. He would be the Giants’ leadoff batter in the bottom of the first, having been reinstated from the IL to make what is very likely to be his farewell performance. It was Crawford’s 1,655th major league game, all of them as a Giant. The ovations came and went as frequently as the “SELL TEAM” chants do in Oakland or the exhortation to “BEAT LA” do in SF.

The last and loudest came as the ninth inning began and Crawford embraced his teammates and walked off the field, replaced by Marco Luciano at short. The old guard had passed. Crawford was the only remaining Giant from the 2014 World Series champions.

San Francisco sent their latest highly touted rookie, southpaw Kyle Harrison, to the mound. He had gone 1-1,4.85 in his brief, six game, career in the show. He plunked two consecutive batters but got through the first inning without any other trouble, which cleared the way for another ovation when Crawford came to bat and yet another when he went down swinging.

Crawford remained in the game and ended his career by going 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. My score card shows him making one put out and no assists.

Having righted the ship, Harrison returned to the mound in the second and pitched until John Brebbia relieved him to start the visitors’ sixth.

Harrison had gone five frames without allowing a hit, although he did hit his work after throwing five innings of no hit baseball, although he did hit three Dodgers with pitches and walk another two. It took him 94 pitches, 61 for strikes to get through the 20 Angelinos he faced. The youngster was not involved in the decision and so finished his first big season at 1-1, 4.15.

The Dodgers also sent a rookie to the mound. Bob Miller came to Los Angeles with three years of minor league experience, during which he went 10-10, 3.79. In the bigs, he had gone 11-4, 3.89 before today. His last previous start came on September 26, when he gave up two runs, both earned, to the Rockies over seven innings in Coors Field.

The Giants mauled him in his only other start against them, getting to him for seven hits and seven runs, all earned, in 5-2/3 innings. This afternoon he lasted a mere four innings against San Francisco, but he shut them out over that stretch, allowing only one hit and one walk.

His pitch count was 57, with 38 strikes. Victor González, who went on to garner the win and now is 3-3, 4.01, replaced him for the fifth and set the Giants down in order. Like Harrison, Miller to settle for. a no decision. He closed the book on the 2023 regular season at 11-4, 3.76.

John Brebbia replaced Harrison at the start of the visitors’ sixth and was ineffective. He faced three batters, the first and third of whom, Will Smith and Max Muncy, reached base on a single and walk, respectively. Both of them scored on singles allowed by Taylor Rogers, Brebbia’s. replacement, and the runs were charged to Brebbia. Kike Hernández’s home run to left, however, and the three runs batted in that came with it were all charged to Taylor’s account. Ross Stirling relieved replaced Taylor with Los Angeles ahead, 5-0.

Ryan Pepiot, listed as a starter, was on the mound replacing González for Los Angeles when Casey Schmidt led off the home sixth with a 377 foot round tripper to left, his fourth dinger in his short span with the Giants. That fig leaf made it a 5-1 ball game.

Schmidt made it two in a row when, leading off the Giants’ half of the eighth, he sent Pepiot’s first offering, an 88.3mph slider into the left center field bleachers, 389 feet from, which it left at 106.3mph.

Evan Phillips set the Giants down in order to earn his 24th save. Brebbia was the losing pitcher and ended his season at 3-5, 3.99.

The Giants’ next game is scheduled for Thursday, March 28, 2024, against the Padres in San Diego. The probable starters haven’t been announced yet.

#3 “An Unbelievable team we just played; great in all three phases [Offense, Defense & Special Teams].” Said Stanford HC Troy Taylor.

#4 Ducks’ senior QB Bo Nix was absolutely motivated, as he put on an aerial display, tossing three TDs in the third 15-minute block. First he hit junior TE Terrance Ferguson for a 10 yard score. Less than two minutes later, he connected with junior wide receiver Troy Franklin for a 46 yard TD.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Stephen Ruderman: Posey, Melvin, Wotus, Correa, who amongst them will be Giants next manager

Former San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey takes to the 2012 World Series celebration back on Oct 31, 2012. Posey has been named as a top candidate for manager for the Giants job. It’s unlikely that Posey will take the job according to sources as Posey left baseball to have more time with his family. (AP file photo)

On the SF Giants podcast with Stephen:

#1 Stephen wanted to go over some of the top candidates for the job of manager of the San Francisco Giants. We’ll start with Buster Posey nothing like name recognition. He’s a three time World Champion catcher and a no one would be surprised if he gets on a Hall of Fame ballot after the five year waiting period is up. Yet can Posey come in and manage the club with no managerial experience what would that adjustment be like?

#2 Bob Melvin is still managing the San Diego Padres but that all could come to an end. The Padres didn’t make post season and Padres GM AJ Preller and CEO Erik Greupner will be meeting Melvin Monday at Petco Park to discuss Melvin’s future. If Melvin gets canned in San Diego he’s been speculated as one of the top contenders for the Giants job. He managed a struggling Oakland A’s club and got the best out of a bad situation, he was a former Giants catcher and is well known and admired for his work in the Bay Area.

#3 Giants third base coach Mark Hallberg is considered the best candidate for the job. He’s well respected and has worked with all the players through his time as third base coach and the players would say he would be a fit. Hallberg was good friends with Posey and if Hallberg was named manager he might tab Posey to come back as a coach.

#4 Ron Wotus is a special assistant with the Giants and a fan favorite. Wotus has been coaching the team under managers Dusty Baker, Felipe Alou, Bruce Bochy, and now Gabe Kapler. Wotus spoke to the team after last Wednesday night’s game after the Giants lost giving up three runs in the top of the tenth inning against the Padres in a 5-2 loss. The writing was on the wall after that game. Did Wotus speaking with the team have meaning for the future for him as a possible manager.

#5 Stephen, just mentioning three more names that could come up available as manager the Rockies Bud Black, the Angels Phil Nevin, the Yankees Aaron Boone, and the Brewers Craig Counsell. Of that short list who do you see having a chance joining the helm at the Giants.

Stephen Ruderman was a MLB podcast contributor for http://www.sportsradioservice.com

On the MLB podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Charlie O, the San Francisco Giants after firing manager Gabe Kapler on Friday have a short list of replacements in mind top names mentioned former Giants catcher and San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin and former Giants catcher Buster Posey.

#2 Tommy John surgery can be a devastating and it will be for the Baltimore Orioles pitcher Felix Bautista. The surgery can set Bautista back by missing the 2024 season. Bautista was placed on the 15 day IL on Aug 26th one day after he got hurt in a game against the Colorado Rockies.

#3 The New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone addressed pitcher Carlos Rodon’s turning his back on pitching coach Matt Blake. Rondon pitching against the Kansas City Royals threw zero innings, 35 pitches without getting an out, giving up eight eight earned runs and six hits. The thing that brought a lot of attention to this story was Rodon’s turning his back on Blake.

#4 Charlie, the Miami Marlins have been here before they clinched their fourth playoff birth on Saturday as the Marlins dominated scoring a run in each of the first, third and ninth innings and two runs in each of the sixth and eighth innings to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3.

#5 Charlie, talk about your memories of former and late Baltimore Orioles third baseman Brooks Robinson. Robinson known as the human vacuum cleaner for his dives and grabs of balls that seem not reachable. 16 Golden Gloves. He was key in the 1970 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds a team and a World Series you might remember.

#6 Charlie, one more thing before I let you go Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper after the ejection flipping the helmet in the stands “give it to the kid.”

Sharks lose final home preseason game in overtime against the Kings 2-1

Photo courtesy of San Jose Sharks.

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE- The Sharks played a tight-checking affair against Los Angles but came up short losing 2-1.

Getting his first start during the preseason was Magnus Chrona who played last season in college. The Kings had veteran goalkeeper David Rittich who they got from Winnipeg get the start.

This game overall was pretty tightly played as neither team was able to score until the third period. The player who broke the ice was Alex Laferriere as he tipped home a shot from Jacob Moverare.

The third also saw Jacob Doty lay a big hit on Jan Rutta that got a response from Scott Sabourin who dropped the gloves for a spirited tilt. The hit was a little high so we’ll see if there is any suspension handed down from the league. Rutta did not return to the game after the hit.

Later in the third with the goalie pulled Thomas Hertl would tie it with a shot low on the blocker side of Rittich. The assists went to Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Mario Ferraro.

In overtime, the game-winner came from Samuel Fagemo on the power play as he one-timed a shot from the point to end it.

Special teams were of note tonight though mainly the penalty kill as the teams combined to go 1/11 with the extra man.

Chrona ended up looking solid in tonight’s game making 28 saves and both goals not being his fault.

The shots finished at 35-30 in favor of the Sharks.

The three stars of the game were 1st: Samuel Fagemo 2nd: Thomas Hertl 3rd: Magnus Chrona

The Sharks will look to bounce back on the road against the Golden Knights on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Earthquakes late goal in second half salvages 1-1 draw with Minnesota FC

San Jose Earthquakes defender Rodriguez battles for a loose ball with Minnesota FC midfielder Franco Fragapane at Allianz Field on Saturday SEP 30, 2023. (Minnesota FC)

by Marko Ukalovic

The San Jose Earthquakes needed some late match comeback magic to earn a critical point.

Paul Marie scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute as the Quakes settled for a 1-1 draw with Minnesota FC on Saturday evening at Allianz Field.

San Jose stayed in eight place in the Western Conference with the tie to stay one point ahead (42) of FC Dallas (41) who earned a point with a 0-0 draw with the Houston Dynamo. Minnesota is on the outside looking in as they are tied for 11th place in the conference with Sporting Kansas City with 38 points.

Minnesota FC (9-11-11-38 points) controlled the first 15 minutes of the match as they generated scoring chances from Emanuel Reynoso and Bongokuhle Hlongwane only to have both players miss their targets.

San Jose (10-10-12-42 points) generated two scoring chances late in the opening 45 minutes when shots from Cristian Espinoza and Matthew Hoppe were off target against Minnesota goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.

Minnesota FC broke the seal in the 56th minute on a counterattack. Bongokuhle tried to dribble through two ‘Quakes defenders inside the box when the ball deflected off Carlos Akapo. Teemu Pukki cleaned up the loose ball and buried a shot past ‘Quakes goalkeeper Daniel for his sixth goal of the season.

“In the first half, I thought we did have some moments of possession, but not enough. I thought we could have connected more and been a little more patient in our build up. I thought it was a pretty fair and even game. We started the second half quite well, but they hurt us in transition. We were down 1-0, and we responded with some aggressive subs with guys who could give us some verticality and speed and take the game to another gear,” Earthquakes head coach Luchi Gonzlez said.

Espinoza, who has been the catalyst for San Jose’s offense all season, set up the late match heroics when he made a move around Franco Fragapane just outside the box before depositing a cross to the left side where an unmarked Marie one-timed the ball with an arial volley into the upper right corner of net for his third goal of the season.

“Starting or not, (Marie) has been in rotation and involved. He’s important. I think he’s a starting caliber fullback/wingback, not just for us but for the league. I am proud of his mentality, being ready no matter what, starting or not. Knowing the game will have a role for him, and he came in showed that. I am very proud of him, and that shows what kind of a teammate he is to this group,” Gonzalez said.

Both goalies had one save on two shots on target to each the draw.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished with seven corner kicks. Minnesota FC has four.

The Quakes now hold a 5-4-4 record against Minnesota United FC, including a 2-2-2 record on the road.

Espinoza tallied his 11th assist of the season and 56th of his MLS career. Akapo tallied his fourth assist of the season and of his MLS career.

UP NEXT: San Jose finishes its regular season road schedule against FC Dallas in a battle for 8th place in the West on Saturday 10/7 at 5:30pm at Toyota Stadium.
