STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (11-11, 6-6 Pac-12) could not withstand the sharp claws of the University of California – Los Angeles Bruins (12-11, 7-5 Pac-12), 82-74, in their LAST Pacific – 12 Battle on the Farm.

Although the LA bears took a 3-0 lead to start the game, the Palo Alto squad came back to go ahead momentarily. Both teams traded leads and had multiple ties during the first 20-minute block, Both had 5-point leads , while Stanford had an 8-0 run, UCLA had a 6-0 of their own push.

Despite no player for the Cardinal reaching double-figures in the First 20, senior Brandon Angel provided eight points for the home team. The Bruins leader at the half was freshman Sebastian Mack, with his 12 points, lady ng everyone in the gymnasium.

At intermission, the visitors from Westwood had a 2-point lead. UCLA 35, Stanford 33.

In the second half, the Bruins had an 8-0 run and held leads as high as 8 points. Stanford managed to get a 50-49 lead near the midway point of the second half. However, UCLA was able to stave them off the rest of the game.

Stanford was perfect from the line most of the game, until (1:25) less than two minutes left in the game, when Maxime Raynaud missed the first of his three misses. UCLA, on the other hand, was horrid from the line for the game, until late in the second half. They ended with a respectable 77% from the line at game’s end.

The Cardinal tried to overtake their southern California opposition, with three players tallying double figure scoring. Raynaud had a double-double (20 points & 10 rebounds), Brandon Angel (12) and Spencer Jones (15). Their 15 turnovers did not help, and the bruins 7 more made threes and 9 more FT’s was a huge contributing factor in the team’s downfall.

The Bruins presented five hoopers with 10+ points on the stat sheet. They were led by the aforementioned Mack (21) with 4 made threes. His 6 missed free throws kept him in the low 20’s. The other four: Aden Bona (16), Dylan Andrews (13), Will McClendon (13), and Lazar Stefanovic (10).

After the 40 minutes of regulation time ended, the UCLA Bruins maintained their largest lead (8) for the final score, 82-74.

The Cardinal will next be in action hosting the USC Trojans, Saturday, February 10, at Maples at 7 PM on ESPN2/U. The Bruins cross the Bay to take on California on the same date at 2:30 PM on FOX.

Kings bow to Pistons NBA’s worst team 136-110 at Golden 1 Center; Detroit’s Ivey leads with 37 points

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night in Sacramento. The Kings were coming off a seven-game road trip that saw them go 5-2. It was a solid trip for the Kings that exceeded expectations.

However, the Kings didn’t finish the trip strong as the red-hot Cleveland Cavs blew them out on Monday 136-110. On Wednesday, the Kings welcomed the worst team in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons. The tip-off was set for 7 PM PST at Golden One Center. The Kings fell to the worst team in the NBA, 133-120, on Wednesday night.

In the first quarter, the Kings played no defense as usual. Yet, the offense was firing on all cylinders. The Kings scored 36 points in the first quarter compared to the Pistons, who scored 31. The Kings were aided in the first quarter with great three-point shooting from Kevin Huerter, who hit 3-4.

In the second quarter, the Kings melted down. The Kings had zero effort on the defensive end, and the Kings shots stopped falling. That combo led to the Kings giving up the lead and giving the Pistons the lead going into halftime.

The Pistons outscored the Kings 39-27 in the second quarter to take the lead going into halftime. The Kings would trail the Pistons 70-63 at halftime. It was an embarrassing showing from the Kings as the boos reigned down from Golden One. Could the Kings turn it around in the third?

Yes! The Kings turned things around drastically in the third quarter as they stormed back to take the lead. The Kings outscored the Pistons in the third quarter 36-27. It was a welcome sight for Kings fans who were unhappy with how the first half ended. The Kings would go into the fourth quarter leading 99-97 after a buzzer-beating three from Domas Sabonis.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings lost the plot. The Kings were run off the court on Wednesday night as the Pistons fired in the final quarter to beat the Kings 133-120.

The Kings were outscored by the Pistons 36-21 in the fourth quarter, which led to their demise. The Kings best performance came from Domas Sabonis, who had 30 points and 12 rebounds. Jaden Ivey led the Pistons to victory with 37 points.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Denver Nuggets in Sacramento at 7 PM PST on Friday.

Golden State Warriors podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Warriors look to win their second straight game tonight in Philadelphia

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) drives on the Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton (33) in first half action at the Barclay Center on Mon Feb 5, 2024. The Warriors are in Philadelphia Wed Feb 7, 2024 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia (AP News photo)

On the Golden State Warriors podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 Jerry, the Warriors pulled another one off where they had to come back from behind and they can give most of the credit to guard Stephen Curry who led with 29 points on Monday night.

#2 The Warriors also got help from Jonathan Kuminga who finished second in scoring with 28 points. Kuminga scoring played huge since he and Curry finished in large numbers to get by the Brooklyn Nets.

#3 Jerry, there was little doubt the Warriors were trying to make amends for losing to the Atlanta Hawks last Saturday after Curry put in a full on effort with 60 points only to lose it.

#4 The Warriors started the game against the Brooklyn Nets questionable hitting only two out of 11 three pointers, turned the ball over ten times, the Nets capitalized scoring 15 points on Warriors turnovers while Golden State managed to get 43 points in the first half.

#5 The Warriors have won three of their last four games and tip off against the Philadelphia 76ers at Well Fargo Center in Philadelphia for a 4:30pm PT tip. The Warriors won the last time they faced the 76ers in San Francisco on Tue Jan 30th. Golden State’s defense were able to hold back 76ers star shooter Joel Embiid for that last win.

Super Bowl LVIII/San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Will rough UNLV field play a role in 49ers Super Bowl; Will Mahomes’ father DUI arrest be a distraction?

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan speaks with the media on Mon Feb 5, 2024 said the field the 49ers are practicing on at UNLV in Las Vegas is just fine and they’ll get through it up until game day at the Super Bowl this Sun Feb 11, 2024

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 David, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said using the UNLV field to practice on was no problem and it was all good. The issues reported were that the field was rough, it was not terribly torn up but for an NFL team to practice on a semi chewed up field could that impact their game as they will practice on that field all week leading up to the Super Bowl.

#2 Meanwhile the Kansas City Chiefs are using the Las Vegas Raiders practice facility. The 49ers were welcome to use the practice facility but declined and elected to use UNLV’s. Do you see that this could be an advantage for the Chiefs using a NFL facility going into the Super Bowl.

#3 Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes father Patrick Mahomes Sr was arrested for DUI he did bail out but there was a lot of publicity over the arrest and Mahomes was asked about it during media day at the Super Bowl saying that it’s an internal family issue that he’ll deal with it privately. Could this turn out to be a distraction for the Chiefs and Mahomes?

San Jose State’s losing streak extends to six with loss against Fresno State 69-57

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE- The Spartans looking to end their losing ways returned home to take on Fresno State on Tuesday night.

Heading into this one SJSU was coming off a two-game road trip where they played Utah State and Nevada and unfortunately lost both.

Both games weren’t particularly close though in the Spartans defense neither team they faced are exactly pushovers.

Fresno State had also lost their past two games as they played UNLV and Colorado State. The Spartans extended their losing streak to six games with a 69-57 deficit.

The first half in this one got off to quite the back-and-forth start as both teams exchanged buckets.

The Bulldogs began to pull away at 12:54 when they managed to pull together a 17-10 lead helped in particular by Jalen Weaver’s quick start.

San Jose State never let the first half get too far away from them as Trey Anderson tied the game up at 19 at 9:02.

Once again the teams went back to exchanging buckets with Fresno’s Xavier DuSell shining in particular at the end as he dropped 11 points in the last couple minutes of the first.

The first half ended with the Bulldogs holding onto a slim one-point lead over SJSU 34-33.

SJSU shot a rather average 45.45% from the field while going 2-8 from three. Alvaro Cardenas lead the Spartans in the first half with ten points.

Christain Wise lead by far in rebounds though for the Spartans snagging six in just one half.

Not skipping a beat Fresno got off to a 6-0 run to start the second half as SJSU quickly fell behind.

With the score at 43-40 in favor of Fresno the teams would proceed to not score a point from 15:46 until 12:28 when Myron Amey Jr. finally broke the cold streak.

SJSU would then actually take the lead on the next bucket as Garrett Anderson sunk a three.

They then began to seemingly pull away holding onto a five-point lead with just 10:46 left in the game.

The Bulldogs were able to get their lead back at 8:24 leading to the teams exchanging the lead back-and-forth making it a down-to-the-wire finish.

A 7-0 run by Fresno seemed to seal the deal as once again DuSell hit a clutch three with Trey Anderson fouling on the play making it a 64-57 game.

Isaiah Pope sunk the last bucket of the game for Fresno ending the game at 69-57 with SJSU unable to pull out the victory.

What really doomed the home team in the second was their shooting as they shot an egregious 32.14% from the field.

Cardenas would end up leading the Spartans in points on the night as he scored 12 while going 6-16.

If there was any positive on the night Tibet Goerner made San Jose State history as he broke the record for three-pointers made with 162.

For SJSU it’ll be back to the drawing board as they try to snap this six-game losing streak.

They will hope to end it on Friday against Colorado State on the road at 6:30 p.m. PST.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Vegas Mayor says A’s belong in Oakland; Schools over Stadiums ready to move language for petition drive to stop A’s ballpark funding

The Tropicana Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas the future home with the Las Vegas A’s hoping to break ground in April 2025. The issue of private financing has been so off schedule and unorganized that Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has said the “plans don’t make sense” (Las Vegas Review Journal file photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, because of all the lawsuits the Oakland A’s might lose the public money because of all the lawsuits and the Schools over Stadiums initiative ballot that stops using public money that could make the public ballot. This money is only earmarked for the Tropicana location and no where else. The A’s might be having problems figuring how to get a ballpark on nine acres at the Trop.

#2 MLB had no comment after Las Vegas Mayor Goodman said that the A’s ought to stay in Oakland.

#3 Mayor Goodman can read between the lines as the reaction at the Chamber of Commerce meeting was cold and talk has been the business community now has it’s doubts about the A’s since owner John Fisher has been going hat in hand looking for financial support.

#4 It’s Super Bowl week Amaury, and you would think the biggest news in Vegas would be about the Big Game but now the Oakland A’s are a headline with the Mayor saying the A’s shouldn’t come to Vegas but stay in Oakland.

#5 Amaury, the Last Dive Bar and Oakland 68s who are strong A’s fan groups are holding a Fan Fest at Jack London Square in downtown Oakland proceeds will help with legal fees toward Schools over Stadiums in Las Vegas to stop the use of public money to finance the ballpark. The first step of success is Schools over Stadium had Oakland A’s fans raise enough money to cover Schools over Stadium’s legal fees to get language to stop the public funding and get a petition drive to get initiative on the ballot for the Nov 2024 election not to mention that Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has been named as a defendant by Schools over Stadiums.

Super Bowl LVIII podcast with Tony Renteria: Will 49ers need to come back from behind again to become champs?; Can Chiefs Mahomes have enough time to score?

The Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones (95) and San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (23) face off in Super Bowl LVIII on Sun Feb 11, 2024 in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (CBS Sports image)

On the Super Bowl LVIII podcast with Tony:

#1 Patrick Mahomes Sr DUI arrest will it have an impact on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes Jr and it will it be a distraction for Mahomes Jr?

#2 San Francisco 49ers declined to share a practice same facility as the Kansas City Chiefs at the Las Vegas Raiders practice field and selected to play at the UNLV field and it was not a smooth field and chipped up after the Runnin Rebels season but head coach Kyle Shanahan said it was all good.

#3 The San Francisco 49ers combining the leads against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Division game and against the Detroit Lions in the Championship game was 27:30. That was time mostly trying to get back into their games.

#4 Does coming back like that for the 49ers make them a good team or a team that if studied well enough can have weaknesses and teams like Green Bay and Detroit can capitalize on?

#5 Tony who do you see having the better advantage in the Super Bowl playing at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas the 49ers who are just 1.5 half from San Francisco or the Kansas City Chiefs who are the AFC team playing in their AFC rivals the Raiders stadium?

#6 Tony, what was the Chiefs biggest strength this season was it their offense and Patrick Mahomes who towards the end of the season got aggressive and won key games particularly after losing to the the Raiders in their last meeting of the season.

#7 Tony, would you agree it was 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy who was the key guy for those come backs against Green Bay driving down field in six of seven plays and against the Detroit Lions taking advantage of Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s mistake in calling for a play rather than kicking a field goal on fourth down. Only for the 49ers to have good position and come back and score?

Bains late game heroics give the Pacific Division a 3-2 win over the Atlantic in AHL All-Star Challenge

Players from the AHL’s Pacific Division celebrate their 3-2 win over the Atlantic Division in the championship game of the 2024 AHL All-Star Challenge at Tech CU Arena on Monday FEB, 5, 2024. (Titus Wilkinson-Sports Radio Service)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The night belonged to the host division in the host city.

Arshdeep Bains scored the game winning goal with 12.9 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Pacific Division a 3-2 victory over the Atlantic Division in the championship game of the 2024 AHL All-Star Challenge on Monday evening at Tech CU Arena.

Bains, the Abbotsford Canucks forward, came loose on a breakaway down the right boards and beat Hersey Bears goalie Clay Stevenson with a wrist shot to the near corner for the game winning goal to send the pro-Pacific Division sold out crowd into a frenzy.

“It was fun,” said Bains regarding his first AHL All-Star experience. “When you have guys that are of this caliber and they’re competing, it gets really special. I know it a privilege to be here, so it was awesome that I was able to do it.”

Bains finished the night with two goals and three assists and earned All-Star Challenge Most Valuable Player honors, a day after travel delays had caused him to miss the Skills Competition on Sunday evening. The Surrey, BC native led all scorers with five points (two goals, three assists) in the round-robin tournament, a series of 3-on-3 games played among the AHL’s four divisions.

“You never forget your first one and to do it here (in San Jose) was special. (There were) a lot of guys I kind of knew so just being able to spend time with guys that I play against and play against guys I don’t get to play against on the other side was really nice and it’s a great city,” Bains said.

Calgary Wranglers goalie and Gilroy, Calif. native Dustin Wolf earned the victory for the Pacific Division as he recorded one saves on two shots in the final 3:04 as he subbed in for Tucson Roadrunners goalie Matt Villalta who started the championship game.

“Yeah, it was awesome,” said Wolf who had close to 10 family members and friends who watched him perform from the stands. “These are events that you look forward to coming to. It worked out, it was a Cinderella ending to give the Pacific (Division) the win on the West coast.”

San Jose Barracuda defenseman and lone representative for the All-Star Challenge Shakir Mukhamadullin had quite the night. The Russian rookie scored the tying goal against the Atlantic Division in one of the round robin games with seven seconds forcing the second shootout for the Pacific Division. He then set up Wrangler forward Matt Coronado with a spinning highlight reel back pass for the equalizer goal at the 3:38 mark of the first period in the championship game.

“It’s really good the fans love hockey; they love the players. They come to every game and get loud. It’s really nice the reaction they gave me,” Mukhamadullin said.

Other highlights of the night included, Adam Gaudette of the Springfield Thunderbirds, the AHL’s co-leader with 24 goals this season, scored three times for the Atlantic Division. The Chicago Wolves’ Rocco Grimaldi and the Manitoba Moose’s Brad Lambert recorded two goals and two assists each for the Central Division, and Angus Crookshank of the Belleville Senators led the North Division with a pair of goals.

The Iowa Wild’s Jesper Wallstedt led all goaltenders with an .833 save percentage on the evening, stopping 15 of 18 shots.

The 2024 AHL All-Star Challenge featured 24 former first- or second-round NHL draft picks, and 28 players who have skated in the National Hockey League already this season.

Warriors come back on Nets 108-98; Curry scores 29 to help lead in victory

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) drives on the Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton (33) in the first half at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn on Mon Feb 5, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Golden State Warriors overcame their struggles at the start of the game to beat the Brooklyn Nets 108-98 at Barclays Center on Monday night in what head coach Steve Kerr described as a “really good team effort”.

It was a welcome win for the Warriors after their 141-134 overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday despite Stephen Curry scoring 60 points. In Brooklyn, Curry scored 29 points and Jonathan Kuminga contributed 28.

“We won a game on the road against a team that’s been playing well,” said Kerr. “And we had multiple guys step in, you know Lester (Quinones) and Moses (Moody) and Gui (Santos) and that’s the story of tonight’s game, is those guys coming back and really contributing to a win.”

The Warriors were 2 for 11 on 3-pointers and had 10 turnovers that led to 15 points. They were held to only 43 points in the first half, but outscored Brooklyn 66-49 in the second half.

In the first quarter, Brooklyn was only 3 for 16 from the 3-point range but scored 12 points from seven Golden State turnovers, and finished off with a 23-20 lead. The Warriors did not make a triple until Curry scored one with 4:29 left in the second quarter, which was his 3,600th career three pointer. Still, Brooklyn led 49-43 at the half. The game was tied with just under three minutes left in the third quarter, and the Warriors led by 69-68 at the end of the quarter.

The Warriors stepped it up in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 10 points a couple of minutes in. With 5:41 to go, Brandin Podziemski made a two point shot from Draymond Green and the Warriors took an 11-point lead. At 4:59 remaining, Nic Claxton was ejected for a flagrant foul on Podziemski.

Podziemski got up after a few minutes on the floor and made one of two free throws and put the Warriors up 92-82. The Warriors lead 100-94 at the two-minute mark. Curry made an 8-foot driving floating jump shot, drawing some “MVP” chants from the crowd. Curry made the free throw to put the Warriors up 105-94 with 1:19 remaining.

Gui Santos, who returned to the NBA in November, added 9 points, two of which were free throws with 40 seconds left in the game and the Warriors led 107-96.

“Everybody here always say, be ready for when you have the opportunity,” said Santos. “When I saw I have a couple minutes on the court, I was like, I have to bring another energy to the team, especially defensively.”

Mikal Bridges made a driving layup with 33 seconds left to go to cut Golden State’s lead to 107-98. Kuminga made a slam dunk with 20 seconds remaining, and Curry dribbled the ball to run out the shot clock and seal the 109-98 victory.

“We needed every bit of it to close out a game,” Curry said of the guys giving it their all. “It was a six point game at one point. Last four minutes was a beautiful brand of basketball.”

Kerr said he could not remember when the last time was that the Warriors went 4 for 22 from 3 and won.

“It seems like every game is like this for us. We’ve hardly had any blowouts in either direction,” Kerr said. “So every game is tight and I think if our guys can build on this, we can recognize what it takes to win these close games.”

At 22-25, the Warriors are 12th in the Western Conference. They continue their five-game road trip against the Philadelphia 76ers (39-19) on Wednesday. Tip-off is at 4:30 p.m. PT.
