Headline Sports with Barbara Mason: 49ers can’t hold the lead against Falcons, will this be a concern going forward?; Raiders string four straight losses together; plus more

On Headline Sports with Barbara:

#1 The 49ers couldn’t hold another lead, dropping their third loss of the season to the Atlanta Falcons 29-22 at Levi’s Stadium.

#2 The Oakland Raiders suffered a 20-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterback Derek Carr just couldn’t get and anything going for Oakland in the second half on offense.

#3 For former interim Warriors head coach Luke Walton, it was an important win in defeating his old team as head coach of the Sacramento Kings in the 100-79 victory Sunday night.

#4 Changes in baseball: Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is trying to change the game drastically. First by getting rid of some 42 minor league teams and next by mandating that pitchers must face the minimum of three batters before getting relieved. It certainly will be an issue with the players during contract negotiations for the CBA.

#5 The San Jose Sharks had lost six straight games before winning on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks. They host Arizona tonight to try and pick up their second straight win under new head coach Bob Boughner.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Charlie O: Hornets force turnovers as Kings go down 110-102

Photo credit sacbee.com: The Charlotte Hornets Terry Rozier (3) drives towards the basket against the Sacramento Kings D’Aaron Fox as the Hornets defeat the Kings by eight points in Charlotte on Tuesday night.

On the Kings podcast with Charlie O

The Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night in Charlotte just simply got outplayed physically. In fact, that was one of the things that Kings head coach Luke Walton said. The Kings just physically got beaten up by the Hornets. It wasn’t in a bad way. It wasn’t like they played dirty.

The Hornets just went out and played a very physical game. They were determined. The biggest number that showed how physical Charlotte was that the Hornets outrebounded the Kings 53-31. When a team is outrebounded with 18 rebounds in a game, you’re not going to win.

Cardinal uses big second half to upend USF 64-56

Oscar da Silva and Daejon Davis each scored 18 points for Stanford Tuesday, as the Cardinal overcame the absence of injured point guard Tyrell Terry and slipped past San Francisco 64-56 in non-conference men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

Bryce Wills and Spencer Jones added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Cardinal (10-1), who trailed 23-18 at halftime. Jones, da Silva and Wills each had five rebounds; Davis added four assists.

Terry was held out of the Cardinal lineup due to what Stanford called “an upper body injury” sustained during the pregame shootaround. Afterward, Stanford personnel said they didn’t think the injury was serious.

Terry’s absence affected the Cardinal offense, which totaled only six assists while committing 19 turnovers. Stanford compensated for the lack of ballhandling by shooting 48 percent from the field while holding the Dons to 39 percent shooting.

Stanford outscored USF 46-32 in the second half. San Francisco averaged 84.6 points per game going into Tuesday’s contest.

Charles Minlend led the Dons (9-3) with 18 points, and Jamaree Bouyea added 15 points, while Minlend and Josh Kunen each grabbed seven of USF’s 29 rebounds.

The Dons are 1-2 against Pac-12 opponents this season. USF lost to Arizona State two weeks ago and earlier defeated California.

Next action for the Cardinal is on Saturday, when they face San Diego in the Al Attles Classic at Chase Center. The Dons play UC Davis on Saturday.

Kings fall to Hornets 110-102 in Charlotte

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings have not been at full strength since the first game of this 2019 season. Tuesday would mark the first time since then the Kings would have all players available. The matchup was the Sacramento Kings visiting the Charlotte Hornets. For Kings fans, they hoped Tuesday would mark the beginning of the season they could have had started if fully healthy.

In the first quarter, the Kings offense sputtered out of the gate. Sloppy ball handling and missed shots allowed the Hornets to only be trailing 9-7 with 6:00 left in the quarter. The rest of the way, the offense continued to sputter.

It’s hard to fault the Kings who are playing with lineups they haven’t seen all year.

Unfortunately, the offense looked a little lost in the first quarter something the Kings would look to remedy in the second quarter. All in all, the Kings put up 21 points compared to the Hornets 26. Leading scorer for the Kings thus far was Harrison Barnes with 5 points while Marvin Williams put up 8 for the Hornets.

In the second quarter, the Kings perimeter shooting continued to struggle. The Kings shot a mediocre 33.3% in the first half from downtown. That being said, they were able to put up 47 in the half. The Hornets didn’t play exceptionally well either, who shot an identical 33.3% from three, were able to put up 53 in the half to lead the Kings 53-47 going into halftime. The leading scorers in the game were De’Aaron Fox for the Kings with 11 points and Hornet Marvin Williams with 10 points. The Kings offense didn’t look smooth, but it wasn’t all red flags. De’Aaron Fox, after missing the last 17 games, looked good in the opening half. Sure the offense didn’t flow the same way it has in recent games, but the Kings are well on their way to getting the rhythm back.

In the second half, the Kings started to hit their three-point shots. The Kings shot much better from downtown making five threes and it makes a difference in the score. The Kings were able to put up 32 in the third out scoring the Hornets who added 27. In his return, De’Aaron Fox continued to lead the Kings putting up 15 points through three quarters. The Kings would try and do something they haven’t done all year on the road; win trailing after three quarters. The Kings went into the fourth trailing 80-79.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings faltered early. Hornets guard Malik Monk started hitting shots after struggling early and the Kings were in a 101-90 hole with 4:25 remaining. From there, the Kings weren’t able to muster anything against the Hornets. The Kings didn’t attack the basket with enough urgency as the Hornets were in foul trouble and that led to a disappointing defeat. The Kings dropped the first game of the road trip by a final of 110-102 in a game dominated by the Hornets in the fourth quarter. The Hornets ended up out scoring the Kings 30-23 in the fourth. The positive for Kings fans from this game was the return of a healthy De’Aaron Fox. Fox led the Kings with 19 points.

Up Next: The Kings travel to Indiana to take on the Pacers on Friday at 4 PM PST.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: MLB Plans to Eliminate 42 Minor League Teams

By Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

During the Winter Meetings in San Diego last week, Major League Baseball (MLB) proposed eliminating 42 minor league teams. That is approximately 25 percent of all the minor league teams in the country. This is planned to happen after next year.

One minor league owner already said: “It’s never going to happen”.

What this signals is just the beginning of a very rough period for baseball. The Professional Baseball Agreement (PBA) covers the working arrangement between Major League Baseball and Minor League teams and will expire after the 2020 season.

The fight has already reached the political arena, where Bernie Sanders, a Democratic Party candidate running for President out of Vermont, strongly opposed the idea. By the way, the Oakland Athletics have a minor league team in Vermont in the Vermont Lake Monsters of Class-A. But you do not need to be a politician to understand how such a reduction of teams will do nothing but hurt the game of baseball, not to mention the cities where they play, the economy of those cities (less revenues and less people hired to work in the stadiums), the reputation (identities) of those cities that would lose a minor league team. The minor leagues serve a purpose to provide opportunities for player development and a way to prepare for the major leagues. The minor league system in is as old as MLB dating back to 1901

According to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, several key issues are at the heart of debate, including potential increases in player compensation as well as the need for facility upgrades, team relocation and the feasibility of a Dream League, which would replace affiliated baseball in the cities that stand to lose their team under the version of the plan known to the public.

All listed below.
– Facilities
– Player Welfare
– Team Travel
– Hotels
– Clubhouse Conditions
– Player Salaries
– Subsidies
– Dream League
– Public Financing
– Relocation
– League Realignment

Here are the A’s minor league franchises: Las Vegas Aviators, Midland Rockhounds, Stockton Ports, Beloit Snappers, Vermont Lake Monsters and AZL Athletics.

Here are the Giants’ minor league franchises: Sacramento River Cats, Richmond Flying Squirrels, San José Giants, Augusta Green Jackets, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and AZL Giants.

Moreover, it is unclear which 42 teams MLB has proposed to eliminate.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: MLB rule changes irk Reds’ Bauer; Former Giant Vogt biggest reason why Bumgarner a D-Back; plus more

On Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred is applying a new rule change that pitchers must face at least three batters before being relieved the very unpopular wiping out of 42 minor league teams, which has not gone over well with the players.

#2 At some point, these changes will not go over well with the players and they will tell Manfred “enough is enough” at the bargaining table when the Collective Bargaining Agreement is up.

#3 Madison Bumgarner’s departure from San Francisco came when Bumgarner realized that he won’t get a deal from San Francisco that would match the Arizona Diamondbacks’ five-year, $85 million offer.

#4 Former Giant catcher Stephen Vogt, who spoke with his current team’s brass at the Diamondbacks, said that if they can get Bumgarner it would be well worth it. Vogt is one of the biggest reasons why Bumgarner came to Arizona.

#5 The Oakland A’s have put out a full page ad in the printed versions of Bay Area local papers. The A’s are pushing the “Rooted in Oakland” brand and trying to secure a fanbase that had worries the team could leave if they don’t get a new stadium at Howard Terminal in Oakland. The A’s are trying assure everyone they are committed. But fans know that the environmental impact report, parking and public transit issues are at play still.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Will the 49ers’ 7-point loss burn into their psyche going forward?

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 The 49ers clinched a playoff spot Sunday but not before they lost to the Atlanta Falcons 29-22. Is this a loss that should concern the 49ers?

#2 There’s a breakdown in the game plan that allowed Atlanta to get back into the game and all the Falcons’ Julio Jones had to do was score on a five-yard pass to end it and give the 49ers their third loss of 2019.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Bears put on a show of resilience, but Gaels just too much on Saturday; Cal set for kickoff at Redbox Bowl

calbears.com photo: Cal’s Andre Kelly (22) had a hot hand against St. Mary’s forward Malik Fitts (24)  Kelly scored a career-high 26 points on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 On Saturday night at Haas Pavilion, the Cal Bears put on a exhibition of resilience when they attempted to come back and rally on the visiting St. Mary’s Gaels.

#2 Like you said in your article, the Gaels brought aggressiveness, experience and nerve to the table in their 11-point win over Cal Saturday.

#3 It was the first loss at home for this season for Cal. They have won five of six games at home and are 6-5 and winning at home against a complete St. Marys team was going to be a task.

#4 The Gaels are in the top 25 in the nation at 10-2. Needless to say, Mark Fox–head coach of Cal–called St. Marys a very good offensive school.

#5 Next up for Cal? The Golden Bears will be at the Chase Center in San Francisco this Saturday, Dec. 21st when Cal tips off against Boston College for a 2:30 pm matchup.

#6 Football: Cal kicks off against the Illinois Illini Monday, Dec. 30th at Levi’s Stadium for the Red Box Bowl. Talk about Cal quarterback Chase Garbers throwing against that Illini defense.

San Francisco 49ers game report: Ryan’s five-yard pass to Jones gets Falcons by 49ers 29-22

photo from sfgate.com: Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones (11) sits next to the goal line after scoring against the San Francisco 49ers during the second half of an NFL football game in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019.

By Barbara Mason

On Sunday afternoon, the San Francisco Forty Niners took on the Atlanta Falcons at Levi Stadium. While most looked at this game as a walkover, we do have to remember that midseason the Falcons beat the New Orleans Saints. This is a league of “any given Sundays” and no team can be taken for granted.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been exceptional as has been the San Francisco defense so signs point to their 14th win of the season. A win today will mean a playoff berth for the team. This Sunday will mark the first time in nearly three years that quarterback Matt Ryan and Coach Kyle Shanahan have been on the same field. Shanahan and Ryan had a dream season prior to the devastating loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI. Atlanta is a 10 1/2 point underdog

The first quarter was a defensive effort by both teams. Matt Ryan would finish the quarter with 15 yards and Garoppolo would finish with 26 yards. The quarter would end with neither team finding the end zone although San Francisco was threatening deep in Atlanta territory.

The 49ers would start the second quarter with a Mostert rush for two yards and the first touchdown of the game giving San Francisco a 7-0 lead.. When it looked like the 49ers were taking control of the game, Matt Ryan would find Julio Jones for 5 yards and the touchdown to tie up the game at 7.

The Falcons were not finished. On their next drive Atlanta settled for a 43 yard Younghoe Koo field goal and the 10-3 lead. San Francisco would go to work with two minutes left in the half. Although unable to score the touchdown, San Francisco kicker Robbie Gould would kick a 22 yards field goal to tie up the game at the half 10-10.

Midway through the third quarter the teams remained tied at 10. That’s when it appeared that San Francisco was finally making their move. Robbie Gould kicked a 46 yard field goal taking a 13-10 lead. It was the fourth quarter that proved to be their undoing.

San Francisco scored a Garoppolo to Juszczyk touchdown from two yards out and the 49ers had their second score in a row for a 19-10 lead. Gould would miss the extra point. Atlanta answered and scored a touchdown with 5 minutes left. This game became very tight in the closing minutes 19-17. Robbie Gould would kick a successful 43 yard field goal to extend the 49ers lead 22-17. There was only 1:48 left on the clock.

When it looked like another San Francisco win, Matt Ryan would drive downfield and finish with a 5 yard pass Julio Jones for the go ahead touchdown 23-22. Their two point conversion attempt would fail. With seconds left on the clock a fumble return by the Falcons to score a touchdown gave them the win 29-22.

San Francisco had lost their third game of the season and dropped into a Wild Card spot in a real shocker. As I said “any given Sunday”!
