Emotional Stampede: Winless Colorado stuns Cal in OT, 20-13

By Morris Phillips

Re-energized and inspired by an injured teammate’s recovery, Colorado was a force to be reckoned with for the Cal Bears.

It didn’t matter that the Buffs were allowing an average of 38 points per game, they held Cal scoreless in an eye-opening, first half.

Then Colorado withstood a back-and-forth fourth quarter, and scored the only touchdown of overtime, a 22-yard pass from J.T. Shrout to Montana Lemonious-Craig to win 20-13.

“This is all about their response, their resolve,” interim coach Mike Sanford said. “The stuff that I said here 10 days ago, everyone thought I was crazy when I talked about what an unbelievable group of resilient fighters that we have in our locker room. I think everybody had a chance to see that on full display today.”

From 0-5 to winning a sixth game in front of a raucous, home crowd that stormed the field after Cal’s Jake Plummer’s last pass attempt in the end zone fell incomplete doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Throughout, the Bears couldn’t sustain anything offensively, and they looked nothing like the team that put up 49 points on Arizona three games ago.

“It’s very hard to win at this level scoring one touchdown,” coach Justin Wilcox said. “You’ve got to put the ball in the end zone, and credit to them. They did it more than we did.”

Plummer’s pass to Mason Starling on first down in overtime appeared to be caught to pull call within an extra point of getting Cal even, but fast-closing safety Trevor Woods ripped the ball loose.

“I saw the ball lobbed in there, and he didn’t really make an effort to go get it,” Woods said. “I punched it as hard as I could.”

Plummer finished 29 for 52 passing for 262 yards and one interception where he overthrew a deep ball down the middle. While Plummer was mildly effective, the Cal run game suffered a miserable afternoon with only 35 yards rushing and one, lengthy run of 22 yards from Jadyn Ott.

“You can’t run a run play or a pass play very effectively if you don’t start up front. Generally speaking you have to block the people up front in the run and pass game and we we didn’t do a good enough job of that today, and their front got after our front.”

The high point for Cal was a third quarter touchdown pass from Plummer to J. Michael Sturdivant that saw Sturdivant calmly get his feet down in bounds after a leaping catch along the sideline. That put Cal up, 7-3.

The Buffs responded early in the fourth with a one-yard run from Anthony Hankerson that capped a six-play drive, and put Colorado up, 10-7. Cal got a field goal from Dario Longhetto to tie at 10, then with time expiring, Longhetto hit from 34 yards to tie the game, 13-13, at the end of regulation.

Buffs running back Deion Smith was injured early in the fourth quarter, and after several anxious moments, Smith was removed by a stretcher while surrounded by the entire Colorado team. When the celebration moved from the field to the locker room after the game, the team was given that much more to celebrate. Smith was up and walking.

“Deion is up and walking and I think he was emotional because he didn’t have a chance to celebrate on the field with his teammates. But he was a huge part of that victory, both in his play and more importantly, just how much this team loves him and showed their support for him.”

If Colorado’s story wasn’t improbable enough, Shrout replaced starter Owen McCown, who was hit in the mid-section, and couldn’t continue. But Shrout came on and led Colorado to it’s only touchdown in regulation, and a 10-7 lead.

The Bears (3-3) return to Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on October 22 to host Washington.

Stanford Upsets Fighting Irish 16-14; Win ends Cardinal 3 game skid

Stanford Cardinal cornerback Ethan Bonner (13) is thrilled after defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sat Oct 15, 2022 at Notre Dame (@GoStanford photo)

By Barbara Mason

Last Saturday Stanford (2-4) dropped a heart- breaker in the final seconds of their game against Oregon State 28-27. Fast forward and the Cardinal were facing (3-3) Notre Dame in South Bend on a chilly Saturday night.

The Fighting Irish are coming off three wins in a row, most recently beating BYU 28-20. The Cardinal held on Saturday night at Notre Dame for a 16-14 squeaker to pick up their second win of the season and snapped the Fighting Irish’s winning streak.

The passing and rushing excellence that we saw from Notre Dame last week was nowhere to be found in the first half of this game. The struggling Cardinal started strong in the first quarter. Casey Filkins rushed for two yards to give Stanford an early 7-0 lead. Stanford would finish off the first half with a 45 yard Joshua Karty field goal taking a 10-0 lead into the locker room at half time.

The Stanford Cardinal would extend their lead in the third quarter with a second Karty field goal, this one a 43-yard kick and a 13-0 Stanford lead.

The expected Notre Dame domination in this game was absent in the first half but came to life in the third quarter when an Audric Estime ten yard romp gave the Fighting Irish their first touchdown of the game.

Notre Dame still trailed 13-7 but with a lot of time left on the clock there was a real shift in momentum. With time running out in the third quarter the Cardinal went on 4th and 2 and failed. Stanford was 0-2 on fourth downs.

The Notre Dame offense was wearing the Cardinal defense down going into the fourth quarter. The Fighting Irish would start the quarter with a 41- yard touchdown from Drew Pyne to Tobias Merryweather to give Notre Dame their first lead of the game 14-13. After 2 1/2 lackluster quarters Notre Dame had turned this game around.

The Stanford offense continue to test the Notre Dame defense and Karty kicked his third field goal of the game, this one another 43-yarder taking back the lead for the Cardinal 16-14.

With 6:35 left in the game Notre Dame fumbled and the upset-minded Cardinal recovered. Stanford was able to hang on for the win 16-14. This game had so many highs and lows but it was the Cardinal defense that came up huge.

Next Saturday the Cardinal will take on Arizona State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Strong first period for Barracuda is enough for win over Iowa Wild by score of 3-1.

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

Another night in Iowa another win as the Barracuda found a way to win against the Wild by a final score of 3-1.

The game would start with a quick penalty call against the Wild for holding that would be killed off. It would end up being a pattern for the rest of the game as the Barracuda finished the night 0-3 on the power play.

Despite the power play being killed Luke Johnson found the back of the net for the Barracuda. The assists coming from C.J. Suess and Ryan Merkley on a nice shot from far out that went bar down past Iowa goalie Zane McIntyre.

Not less than a minute later William Eklund followed it up with a tap in to a wide open net off a nice feed from Derrick Pouliot. Ryan Merkley got the other assist as the Barracuda quickly found themselves up 2-0.

That would be all the scoring in the first period with the shots ending at a tie of 9-9 between the two teams.

Momentum seemed to swing in the other direction in the second period with the shots moving more in favor of the Wild. With the shots by the end of the period in favor of the Wild by 19-13.

To cap off this momentum swing Nick Swaney scored for Wild with assists from Steven Fogarty and Turner Ottenbriet.

Newly anointed Barracuda captain Andrew Agozzino would respond on a breakaway goal shooting it through the five-hole of McIntyre. Max Veronneau got the assist feeding it up to Agozzino to propel him on the breakaway.

That would do it for scoring as the Barracuda would hold on to that lead of 3-1. Due in large part to goalie Eetu Makiniemi making 28 saves on the night.

The Barracuda’s next game will be against the Henderson Silver Knights on Saturday Oct. 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at Tech Cu arena.

Late goal gives Hurricanes 2-1 decision over winless Sharks

Carolina Hurricanes center Sebastian Aho (20) scores against San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer (47) during the third period on Fri Oct 14, 2022 at SAP Center in San Jose (AP News photo)

By Daniel Dullum

Friday, October 14, 2022

Sebastian Aho’s goal with less than two minutes remaining in the third period lifted the Carolina Hurricanes past the San Jose Sharks 2-1 Friday at SAP Center.

The Hurricanes are undefeated in their first two games of the NHL season, while San Jose is 0-3. This was the first game of a five-game road trip for Carolina, all of them against Pacific Division opponents.

Aho scored his first goal of the season at 18:02 of the third period, with Brett Pesce and Teuvo Teravainen each collecting their first assists. Aho worked his way to the slot and converted a re-direct off his skate from Pesce’s shot from the point.

The Hurricanes tied the game at 19:37 of the second period on Martin Necas’s second goal of the season, assisted by Andrei Svechnikov.

Evgeny Svechnikov opened the scoring for San Jose with his first goal of the season and his first as a Shark, coming at 17:48 of the first period. Jaycob Megna and Erik Karlsson had the assists.

James Reimer stopped 33 of 35 shots he faced in the Sharks’ goal, while Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta faced 19 shots, with 18 saves.

San Jose had 11 penalty minutes, including five by Noah Gregor for fighting with the Hurricanes’ Stefan Noesen in the third period. Noesen also received a 5-minute visit to the penalty box.

The other Sharks penalties were drawn by Radim Simek (tripping, closing hand on the puck) and Luke Kunin (hooking).

Former Shark Brent Burns was a plus-1 in 23 minutes of ice time. Burns spent the previous 11 seasons with San Jose.

The Sharks’ quest for their first win continues Saturday night when they host the winless Chicago Blackhawks. Opening faceoff at SAP Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Warriors lose final preseason game to Denver Nuggets 119-112

The Golden State Warriors Patrick Baldwin Jr (7) takes aim against the Denver Nuggets at the Chase Center in San Francisco Fri Oct 14, 2022 (@warriors photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors hosted the Denver Nuggets at the Chase Center Friday night and ended their pre season with a 119-112 loss to the Nuggets.

The Warriors were playing the fifth and final preseason game before the start of the 2022-2023 season. The Warriors, who won their fourth NBA title in the last eight seasons, will face the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday night as they seek to win another crown.

Both teams had their projected starters on the floor to start the game. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Kevon Looney, and Andrew Wiggins did not play last Monday night against Portland.

The starting five had to go against Denver’s big man Nikola Jokic, a two-time NBA MVP, Aaron Gordon, Bruce Brown, Michael Porter, Jr., and Kentavius Caldwell-Pope. Jamal Murray, who missed most of last season with an injury, was not scheduled to play Friday night.

The Warriors did not play Moses Moody or JaMychal Green. Thompson did not play in the first four preseason games and was penciled in to play the first half.

The Warrior’s coaching staff wanted to see how Thompson, James Wiseman, and Jonathan Kuminga would do against the first string of the Denver Nuggets.

Both teams played well in the first quarter. Denver finished with a four-point lead, 32-28, after the first 12 minutes. Thompson knew he would shoot whenever he had his hands on the ball. The Warrior’s tried to get him open so he could take the shots. Thompson finished the first half with 17 points and made four threes.

The Warrior’s won the second quarter 36 -24 to finish the first half leading 64-56. The team played well. Kuminga and Wiseman did the bulk of the scoring for the Warriors. Curry, Jordan Poole, and Wiggins let Klay, Kuminga, and Wiseman carry the load. The Warriors led 64-56 after 24 minutes of play.

The third quarter was a different story. The Warrior’s increased the lead to 11. Denver, behind the play of Nikola Jokic, went on a 24-9 run to lead 83-78. The Warrior’s narrowed the gap to two, 86-84. Denver then went on a 10-0 run to lead 98-84. The Nuggets outscored the Warrior’s 42-20 in the third.

The Warriors let players fighting for a job on the team play the fourth quarter. The Warrior’s had Patrick Balwin, Jr, Ryan Rollins, Pat Spencer, Jerome Robinson, and Kuninga try to get the Warrior’s back in the game. The young players fought back and went on a 15-3 run to make it a seven-point deficit. The Nuggets did not fold as they cruised to the win.

Thompson, Kuminga, Wiseman, and Curry were all in double-figures. Jokic paced the Denver attack. The two teams meet again next Friday. This time the game will count. The Nuggets want to beat the Warrior’s as they lost to Golden State in the playoffs.

The Warriors will raise their championship banner before the start of the game with the Lakers Tuesday night. The players will receive their championship rings, too. The game will start at 7 pm.

Kings Wallop Lakers For a Second Time 133-86

Kings Wallop Lakers For a Second Time 133-86

By Barbara Mason

Friday night, the Sacramento Kings (4-0) took on the Los Angeles Lakers (1-5) for the second time in this pre-season and picked up their second straight in pre season over the Lakers 133-86. In their first meeting Mon Oct 3, the Kings beat the Lakers soundly 105-75.

Sacramento repeated the task of defeating the Lakers in Friday’s game. While this is only the pre-season what we have seen from the Kings so far has been very encouraging in regards to the upcoming regular season.

Friday game recap: The Kings got off to a quick start and led at the end of the first quarter 36-23. The Lakers took the court without Anthony Davis who was out with a low back issue. Both teams were hoping to treat the final games of the pre-season as a sort of rehearsal to the start of the regular season. The loss of Davis made this much tougher for Los Angeles.

At the half the Kings had a healthy lead over the Lakers. They had nearly doubled their lead after the first quarter taking a 65-44 lead into the locker room. De’Aaron Fox had 14 points in the half playing 14 minutes. LeBron James had 11 points in the first half. Russell Westbrook missed the second quarter limping off the court with a hamstring injury near the end of the first quarter.

The Kings continued to extend their lead, ahead 95-62 after three quarters and Sacramento was well on their way to an undefeated pre-season.

The Kings came away in a blow-out. De’Aaron Fox finished with 19 points and the high for the Lakers was LeBron James with 12 points.

As the regular season kicks off, the Kings will take on the Portland Trailblazers at Golden 1 Center on Wed Oct 19th. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
