NHL podcast with Matt Harrington: San Jose-Vegas series postponed due to Covid 19;

The Gala River Arena in Glendale what was going to be the season home opener site for the San Jose Sharks for Feb 1 and 3 has been postponed due to Covid 19 protocols issues from the Vegas Knights who were supposed to be the Sharks opponents for the two game series (Arizona Sports file photo)

On the NHL podcast with Matt:

#1 The Vegas Golden Knights and the San Jose Sharks series has been postponed for Feb 1 and 3 due to the Knight head coach Peter DeBoer; assistants Ryan Craig, Ryan McGill and Steve Spott; goaltending coach Mike Rosati; and video coach Tommy Cruz due to Covid-19 protocols.

#2 The Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon and AHL Henderson coaching staff assisted McCrimmon on Tuesday against the St Louis Blues in a game that turned into a 5-4 shootout loss for the Knights without their first string coaching staff.

#3 The Knights Alex Pietrangelo and another member of the Knight coaching staff also entered quarantine for Covid-19 protocols.

#4 Matt this was supposed to be a home away from home series for the Sharks opening up their season home opener in Glendale after such a long road trip while it’s awkward the Sharks were looking forward to playing the series but will really have a home opener in San Jose now against the Anaheim Ducks after they finish road games in Anaheim and Los Angeles.

#5 In other NHL news I wanted to see if you could give us an update on Los Angeles Kings defenceman Matt Roy who was pushed into the boards after chasing down a puck with the Minnesota Wild’s Kevin Fiala right behind Roy during Thu Jan 28th’s game in LA. Roy went down after his head hit the boards with such force. Consequently Fiala was fined over $77,000 and suspended without pay for three games.

San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Barracuda look to shut off Knights scoring in tonight’s game in Vegas

Orleans Arena in Las Vegas site of tonight’s San Jose Barracuda and Henderson Silver Knights second game (@JesseGranger photo) Jesse Granger is a staff writer for the Athletic and covers the Knights

On the San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko:

#1 The Henderson Silver Knights wasted no time scoring five goals in the second period and the Barracuda were whipped 7-3 at Orleans Arena in Vegas for game one of this two game series.

#2 Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer had to be concerned in that second period about shutting the Silver Knights offense but they found they’re way to the net with no problem.

#3 Sommer had to be concerned about goaltender  Zachary Sawchenko who stopped 25 shots but allowed six goals. Was this a game where Sawchenko was just off or he just wasn’t getting enough protection up front?

#4 Marko the other concern that the Barracuda had was the Silver Knights took just 11 shots to convert the six goals in that short of time the defense had to try and reconfigure the Knights offense.

#5 It’s another try again tonight for the Barracuda who face off at 7:oopm at Orleans. In pre season coach Sommer has the opportunity to take a look at a lot of talent how do you see tonight’s match up?

#6 In other AHL news Marko, the Stockton Heat will now play all of it’s home games in Calgary since they are the Flames minor league affiliate and the Heat want to avoid all Covid-19 border crossing protocols.

The San Jose State men’s basketball swept its Mountain West series against the Air Force Falcons with a 75-62 win at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center on Saturday. With the win, SJSU improved to 5-11, 3-9 MW, and won its third straight game.

SJSU head coach Jean Prioleau kept the same starting lineup against AF. Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Jalen Dalcourt, Caleb Simmons, and Ralph Agee stepped out on the court. The Spartans won the jump ball, and Simmons scored the first points of the game with a layup in the paint for a 2-0 lead at the 18-minute mark.

The Spartans went on a 10-0 run and took an early 10-0 lead at 14:06. Just 10 seconds later, AJ Walker ended the Spartans’ run with a jumper. The score was now 10-2 Spartans.

The Falcons played harder, but were unable to catch up to the Spartans. Omari Moore and Ralph Agee scored the final points of the first half — a fastbreak layup in the paint and a layup, respectively. The Spartans took a 39-28 lead to the locker room at halftime. SJSU shot 61.5% at halftime.

The Spartans opened the second half on the right foot, but the Falcons kept the game interesting. Ralph Agee made a jumper for a 41-28 Spartans lead just 54 seconds into the second half.

The Falcons used a 7-2 run to pull within eight, 43-35, at 17:30. Ralph Agee ended the Falcons’ run with a second-chance layup. The Spartans now led by ten, 45-35, at 16:43. Agee made another second-chance layup, and the Spartans eclipsed the 50-point plateau, leading 50-42 at 13:19.

Trey Smith made a pair of fastbreak free throws to help the Spartans build a 10-point lead, 70-60, with 31 seconds left in the second half. Smith made another pair of fastbreak free throws to close out the game. The Spartans won 75-62. Ralph Agee led all scorers in points (22) and rebounds (14).

AF fell to 4-12, 2-10 MW. AJ Walker led all scorers with 16 points.

The Spartans visit the San Diego State Aztecs for a two-game series starting Monday, February 8th at 8 pm PT.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Are Super Bowl Parties Super Spreaders?

Are Super Bowl Parties Super Spreaders?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

One of the biggest days to party is coming next week, when Superbowl LV will take place in Tampa between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs. And millions of Americans will party at home with family and friends as well as many others who usually go out to sports-bars, restaurants and places where sometimes the game is secondary to the festivities.

Millions of people gather and party together during the holidays, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year, Fourth of July and other festive days. In sports, the Superbowl is one of those days where millions of people gather to celebrate, millions (not all necessarily football fans) celebrate Superbowl at home or on the road.

During regular times, regular bars. Sports bars and restaurants usually have a “very good day” when it comes to Superbowl Sunday. Although is not a Federal Holiday, it might as well be because of the popularity on this one day, which always takes place on a Sunday, the one day of the week where most people do not work.

Nevertheless, restaurants expect good business this next Superbowl Sunday. Here in the Bay Area restaurants were recently allowed to open outdoor dining areas. The hospitality business has been hit as hard as any other business. It has been suggested that the day after the Superbowl should be a Federal Holiday, since the attendance to work is as bad as any day of the year.

In pre-covid years, hundreds of thousands of people traveled to Las Vegas each year for-Superbowl weekend, always a huge event in Sin City. Obviously this year is different, still airlines are offering very tempting low prices as well as the Casinos with special and seductive packages for accommodations.

The 2019 Super Bowl brought roughly 310,000 visitors to Las Vegas and had an estimated economic impact of $425 million; according to research company Applied Analysis.

According to protocols in Nevada, casino operators are prohibited from hosting big crowds this year. Hotel estimates people gatherings a lot of 50-person events in ballrooms, much smaller events than in the past.

If they fail to comply they can be fined or have their licenses suspended or revoked. But Las Vegas is open for business and it will be interesting to see the numbers this coming Superbowl weekend.

Restaurants in the Bay Area are now open for outside dinning as take-out continues. Jennifer Echeverri, owner of Habana Cuba Restaurant on SoFA Market 387 South First Street in San José told me: “things are starting to pick up” and added “we are going to have a Superbowl special”. Like most places they have been just doing take-out, and will continue, and too many restaurants take-out has been the only lifeline and what has kept them in business.

Whatever you do this Super Sunday February 7, remember to keep doing what you have been doing taking all regular common sense precautions, like wearing masks (double-up if you want) separation, washing hands, etc.

Getting vaccinated has not been easy in California, there still a lot of confusion, people over 65 waiting to get their shots, others are awaiting the call from their medical providers and things are moving slowly. I was lucky to get my first Moderna shot and scheduled for my second one in mid-February. Enjoy the Superbowl, preferable with your immediate family. Have a good time. And remember Superbowl parties do not have to be Super Spreaders.

Stay well and stay tuned.

A’s PA announcer Dick Callahan will be missed we were lucky to work with him

Dick Callahan who was the Oakland A’s and formerly the Golden State Warriors PA announcer passed away on Fri Jan 29, 2021. Dick also owned his own Insurance company. (file photo from sfgate.com)

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND–The Oakland A’s announced via Twitter the news that beloved Public Address announcer, Dick Callahan, had passed away. Dick was 80 years old.

Dick was a special guy. He was a kind, pleasant man. He was always enjoyable to everyone around him. I usually saw him every when I was at the Coliseum to report on the A’s games. On occasion, I was fortunate, along with the A’s Spanish language broadcaster, Amaury Pi-Gonzalez, to have dinner with Dick in the Media Lounge. He always was cheerful, and he had the famous Irish twinkle in his eye.

Dick went to Scranton Prep High in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He came to California and made his home in the East Bay. Dick had a successful insurance business, too. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s University and started his public address career with the Gaels in 1975.

He later became the public address announcer for the Golden State Warriors. People remember Dick for his signature “shooting-two” when a Warrior player had to take two free throws. Dick called games for the University of California, too. He also worked at the University of the Pacific, Santa Clara University, and the University of San Francisco.

Dick had the unenviable task of succeeding Roy Steele as the announcer for the Oakland A’s. Steele, affectionately known as the “Voice of God,” held the job from 1968 to 2005. Not only did Dick not fail, but he was also known as the “Voice of God.” One evening, I told Dick that he had a great speaking voice. Dick replied the microphone aided his voice. I told him that was not true and we had a nice laugh together.

Dick now joins people like Roy Steele, John Ramsey of the LA Dodgers, Bob Sheppard of the New York Yankees, and Sherm Feller of the Boston Red Sox in the Pantheon of great Public address announcers.

Dick called over 1000 games for the A’s and over 2700 games in his career. His three favorite games were Dallas Braden’s perfect game on Mother’s day in 2010. Sean Manaea’s no-hitter against Boston in 2018, and Mike Fiers no-no on May 7th, 2019. Fiers’ gem was the 1000th game called by Dick.

My favorite story with Dick happened several years ago. One night, after finishing my report, as I was leaving the park, a fan came up to me and asked me for an autograph. I was taken aback. I had no idea why anyone would want my autograph. I asked the fan why. He answered: why you’re Dick Callahan.” I smiled and told him that I wasn’t. The next night I told Dick the story. Dick smiled and said: “you should have signed it:” We both laughed.

Dick took the 2020 Oakland A’s season off as a precaution due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Amelia Schimmel took Dick’s place as PA announcer for 2020 and said in a San Francisco Chronicle interview at the time “Nothing replaces him, obviously, Dick did give me pointers, and he’s such a good person. He called and said, ‘You did a fantastic job.’ I know how hard it is for him not to come in this season and he was so sweet about it. He said, ‘Your voice sounded great on the broadcast.’ I think he’s trying to let me know he approves and that support is really, really appreciated.” said Schimmel.

The A’s organization has lost several longtime employees over the past three years. Dick joins people like Harold Miller, Chester Yarrow, Roy Steele, Gary Hughes( baseball scout) in our memories. We will miss you immensely, Dick. Rest in Peace, my friend.

Silver Knights dominate Barracuda in 7-3 victory

One of the few shots that the San Jose Barracuda threw at the Henderson Silver Knights net as the Barracuda lost by four goals at the Orleans Arena in Paradise NV on Fri Jan 29, 2021. It was the first of two games between the two teams. (@barracuda photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

PARADISE, NV—The Henderson Silver Knights scored five goals in the second period en route to a 7-3 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Friday evening at Orleans Arena.

It was the first pre-season game for the AHL team of the Vegas Golden Nights.

Both teams traded goals in the first period and were tied 1-1 at the end of the opening 20 minutes. Reid Duke scored the first ever franchise goal for the Silver Knights.

San Jose got into penalty trouble in the second period that opened the floodgates for Henderson. Five straight goals by Dylan Sikura, Ben Jones, Zach Hayes, Lucas Elvenes and Danny O’Regan put the game away for the Silver Knights.

The Barracuda scored twice in the third period to cut the lead in half but would get no closer than that. Henderson completed the scoring with a goal at the 19:50 mark to seal the deal.

UP NEXT: The same two teams go right back at it on Saturday 1/30 at 5:00pm at Orleans Arena.

Sharks-Golden Knights Games Postponed Due to COVID Protocol

The Vegas Golden Knights Max Pacioretty scored his third goal against the St Louis Blues in the third period on Tue Jan 26, 2021 in Las Vegas. The Knights were without their head coach and assistant coaches due to Covid 19 protocols during this game (AP News photo)

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks were scheduled to play their first (home away from) home games at Gila Arena in Glendale, Arizona next week. The games have been postponed because their opponent, the Vegas Golden Knights, are unable to play due to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols. Four members of the team, including a player and three coaches, are in isolation.

Last Tuesday, the Golden Knights played the St. Louis Blues without their regular coaching staff behind the bench, as they were already in isolation. Instead, the team was coached by General Manager Kelly McCrimmon. The assistant coaching staff was replaced by their AHL affiliate’s coaches: Manny Viveiros, Joel Ward and Jamie Heward. Two days later, the team’s games started being rescheduled.

Since the season started, nine NHL games have been rescheduled due to the COVID-19 protocols. The Dallas Stars and the Carolina Hurricanes preceded the Golden Knights in the schedule shuffling.

At this time, the Sharks-Golden Knights games are expected to take place in the SAP Center in San Jose, some time after the Sharks’ scheduled return on February 13. The next Sharks game on the schedule is on February 5 against the Ducks in Anaheim at 7:00 PM PT.

Sacramento Kings game wrap: Kings Barnes leads with 26 in 126-124 win over Toronto; Kings win third straight game

The Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield (24) who finsished with 22 points drives against the Toronto Raptors forward Yuta Wantanabe (18) during Fri Jan 29, 2021 game in Tampa Bay (AP News photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings have been putting their losing ways behind them. The Kings, after losing five straight and getting two games postponed, have won their last two games. The Kings most recently defeated the Orlando Magic in Florida by a final of 121-107. The Kings are looking to turn the tide on the season. They still have time as the NBA season is long.

In Friday’s game, the Kings faced the Toronto Raptors and got a two point 126-124 win for their third straight win. The last time these two teams faced off it was ugly. The Raptors ended up getting the victory but neither team played any defense and at the time Toronto was 2-6 on the season. On Friday, the Raptors come in at a 7-11 record looking to improve on a rough opening month. The tip off was set for 4:30 PM PST in Toronto.

In the first half, the Kings played well! They managed to jump out to an early double digit lead outscoring the Raptors 36-24 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Kings regressed a little bit. They were outscored 34-32 in the second quarter as the defense took a step back.

It was a worrying trend after what seems to be a daily occurrence of second half meltdowns for the Kings. However, the Kings still lead 68-58 heading into halftime feeling good about their chances. Up until this point Harrison Barnes had 15 points and Pascal Siakam had 17.

In the second half, the third quarter went according to the Kings plans. They could have performed better in the other defensive end but nonetheless outscored the Raptors 36-33. In the fourth, the Kings didn’t play well. They were outscored by the Raptors 33-22 in the final quarter.

However, the Kings managed to hold on and beat the Raptors despite having faltered in the final minutes. The defense didn’t it hold together, and they didn’t score at the clip they had earlier in the game. However, in the end they won and that’s something they can build on. The Kings were led by Harrison Barnes who scored 26 points in victory. In defeat, the Raptors were led by Pascal Siakam who had 32 points.

Up Next: The Kings make the flight to Miami to take on the Heat at 5 PM PST on Saturday evening. Charlie O will have coverage for us at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: ASU plays keep away gets 4 pt win over Cal Bears

The Cal Bears had a hard time keeping up with Arizona State University Sun Devils in the closing moments of Thu Jan 29, 2021 second half in Tucson (@CalMBBall)

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael final moments of the game on Thursday night the Arizona Sun Devils (5-8) pulled far enough away in the second half to grab a win 72-68 win away from the Cal Bears (7-11).

#2 After getting crushed Monday night by the Arizona Wildcats 80-67 the Sun Devils were out for some revenge and they had both offense and defense working against Cal in the second half after getting eclipsed by one point by Cal in the first half.

#3 One positive thing that came out of the game was that guard Matt Bradley has found his shot and led Cal with 26 points.

#4 The only other player for Cal who was in double figures was Andre Kelly who finished up with 16 points, how tough has it got to be for Cal head coach Mark Fox to get the rest of the offense to find the basket in a game like this?

#5 Cal’s task doesn’t get any easier they face the Arizona Wildcats (12-4) who just came off a Thursday night loss in Tucson to the Stanford Cardinal (10-5) 73-64 there is very little doubt that the Wildcats will be also taking their frustrations out on the Bears on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Duca does the Cal Bears podcasts each Friday at http://www.sportsradioservice.com
