Donskoi’s Deke Spoils SAP Homecoming for McLellan, Oilers

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Former San Jose Sharks Todd McLellan made it difficult for his former charges Thursday night in his first trip to the Shark Tank at the helm of the Edmonton Oilers. McLellan’s youthful Oilers gave his replacement Peter DeBoer and San Jose all they could handle, but the Sharks (22-18-2) pulled out the 2-1 shootout victory to extend their win-streak to 4 games after playing their first home game into overtime on the year

“It’s been a long time,” said DeBoer on his team’s regulation streak at home. “I can’t believe we’re halfway through the season and it’s the first time we’ve had one.”

After leading San Jose to 311 wins from 2008-15, McLellan was familiar with the majority of the Sharks roster, but it was a pair of players not as his disposal during his tenure in Silicon Valley that made an impact in the upheaval of the Oilers (17-23-4).

Offseason trade acquisition Martin Jones made 24 saves in regulation for the Sharks, then managed to stop the potent duo of Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the skills competition for his 19th win of the year. Joonas Donskoi scored the deciding goal in the shootout on a masterful deke of an otherwise solid Oilers goalie Cam Talbot.

“It was an up-and-down game,” said DeBoer on the game’s pace. “Goaltending was excellent at both ends. It was a great hockey game.”

Donskoi, a known commodity to European Hockey aficionados and Youtube browsers, remains a mystery to North American scouts and coaches. Thursday was his first attempt at a shootout, and it produced a dandy.

“It was a no-brainer to throw him out there,” said DeBoer. “You don’t know how guys are going to react to the pressure but he delivered.”

The Finnish import forced Talbot to his right after pulling the puck to his backhand then transferred it back to his forehand in the blink of an eye to deposit it in the 72×48-inch vacancy.

“He’s got a few moves,” said Captain Joe Pavelski. “They can’t just be prepared for that one. It’s a situation he’s very strong at.”

“He’s got some nice hands on him to say the least,” added Sharks forward Joe Thornton.”

San Jose outshot the Oilers 37-25, but could only solve Talbot once in regulation, then had all 4 shots turned aside in sudden death overtime. Pavelski also scored in the first round of the shootout to help extend Team Teal’s winning ways after playing a quartet of contests in just 6 days.

“It hasn’t been too bad,” said Jones. “We’ve taken advantage of some days off and gotten ready to play for games. Everybody goes through the same thing.”

The Sharks all but guaranteed two points by hitting the score sheet first 11:29 into the game on a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal. They entered play Thursday night 17-2 when scoring first, while Edmonton was just 4-15-2 when after going down 1-0.

Center Joe Thornton initiated the play after he flipped a puck on his backhand from the Sharks defensive end up to the neutral zone. From there, a waiting Melker Karlsson corralled the puck before tapping it to a rushing Vlasic. Vlasic slid into the slot to Talbot’s right and ripped a wrist shot over the netminder’s blocker for his 5th goal of the season.

“We had a day off yesterday, we have a day off tomorrow,” said Vlasic. “You get your rest and keep your energy for the game. We want to play tight defensively, but if the chance is there to join the rush, join the rush.”

Vlasic nearly netted his second of the game 8 minutes into the 2nd period, but the exchange would result in a 1-1 tie instead of a 2-0 lead. Vlasic’s shot at a gaping net on a one-timer missed the mark, allowing Oilers defenseman Justin Schultz to shovel the puck to a pair of rushing Edmonton forwards with a lone Sharks defenseman playing back.

The puck was slowed in linesman Trent Knorr’s skate, but Lauri Korpikoski still managed to pick the puck up for a 2-on-1 chance. Korpikoski managed to slide the puck just under Justin Braun’s stick to connect with Nail Yakupov. The top pick in the 2012 Entry Level Draft converted for just his 3rd goal of the year amidst a campaign marred by struggles.

“It was an unlucky bounce,” said Pavelski. “It was nice to see the guys keep working. We didn’t let them beat us.”

The Sharks get to continue to build momentum at home, a place where they’ve struggled this season to a 7-12-0 record. They welcome the Dallas Stars to town Saturday night then host the Ottawa Senators Monday evening.

“You just understand how hard it is,” said Pavelski of playing at home in the NHL for any team. “Teams are good on the road. We know what we can do on the road, so we have to expect teams to do the same.”

The Sharks feel like they are finally hitting stride with a relatively healthy roster. It appears Logan Couture may finally be fully back after peppering Talbot with 11 shots on goal Thursday. His presence has allowed for comfortability amongst the San Jose forward lines.

“I think it’s no secret that as Couture comes back and starts to get back to a good place,” said DeBoer. “When he does, our game starts to come around again.”

“It helps being healthy,” added Jones. “The last 6, 7 games, even ones we didn’t win, I thought we were taking steps in the right direction. We’re starting to get some results now.”

The Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116-98 Thursday night at the Oracle Arena. The Lakers’ Kobe Bryant, retiring after the season, made his final appearance in Oakland. Bryant played about 28 minutes and left the game late in the fourth quarter. The fans, both Warrior and Laker fans, gave Bryant a standing ovation. The Lakers, who are rebuilding, fielded a very young lineup. They played the Dubs fairly even in the first half. Golden State did not shoot well from the floor as their field-goal percentage was just 35.6%. The Dubs led by one at the end of the first period and by three at the half 52-49. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson led the Dubs with nine each. Jordan Clarkson and D’Angelo Russell led the Lakers with ten each while Lou Williams pitched in with nine.

The Dubs were not successful extending the lead early in the third period.  They had a seven-point lead midway through the period but the Lakers would not quit. The Lakers kept coming back and closed the gap to three trailing 73-70. At this point, the Warriors went on a 12-2 run to take a ten-point lead with 1:26 left to play.  Dubs lead by fourteen 86-72 after three periods.  Steph Curry made two key three-point shots in the period. Steph, at this point, had made eight three-point shots good for 24 points. He made a dunk late in the period. It was his only two-point basket in the game. Steph finished with twenty-six points.

The Warriors bench extended the lead to twenty to start the fourth period. Shaun Livingstone and Leandro Barbosa were huge off the bench. The Lakers tried but could not catch up. They did cut the deficit a little bit but the Warriors refused to wilt and the Dubs won again at home by a final score of 116-98.

Game Notes- The Warriors are 19-0 at home this year and have won 37 consecutive games in a row at Oracle Arena. Their record for the season is now 37-3. Steph Curry led the Warriors in scoring with 26 points. Klay Thompson had twelve and Draymond Green added seven and had nine rebounds to his credit. Shaun Livingstone, Leandro Barbosa and Harrison Barnes scored seventeen, fifteen and twelve respectively. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 9-32 for the season. Jordan Clarkson scored twenty for LA. Lou Williams added eighteen while Julius Randle and D’Angelo Russell each had fourteen.  Kobe finished with eight.

The next three games will be on Saturday January 16th against the Detroit Pistons, Monday, January 18th against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Wednesday, January 20th against the Chicago Bulls.

NFL Playoff Podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: J Hawkes pix Kansas City, Arizona, Seattle and Pittsburgh read em and weep

by Joe Hawkes Beamon

photo credit: Seattle Post Intellingencer- Carolina quarterback Cam Newton should get MVP according to Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson

AFC Playoff Sat 16th Kansas City (11-5) @ New England (12-4): I’m leaning towards Kansas City because they have a great defense they can get after the New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. They forced a lot of turnovers last week against Houston in a 30-0 shutout.

The Chiefs safety Eric Berry was so impressive last week who could play one on one this coming weekend with the Patriots Rob Gronkowski. The Chiefs aren’t afraid of going man to man it’s a matter of if New England’s offensive line can protect Brady.

NFC Playoff Sat 16th Green Bay (10-6) @ Arizona (13-3): You got remember two weeks ago Green Bay was annihilated by the Arizona Cardinals 38-8. The Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers got sacked and the Cardinals had nine sacks in total on Green Bay quarterbacks when it was all said and done.

This game Saturday may not be the route that game was back on December 27th but Arizona is primed. Also Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer hasn’t won a playoff game his whole career. Green Bay has a good chance and I would lean towards Green Bay but there’s something about their defense and they could fold and I’m leaning towards Arizona.

NFC playoff Sun 17th Seattle (10-6) @ Carolina (15-1): You definitely have to tip your hat off to Carolina who had an unbelievable season going 15-1. The Panthers were just fantastic they were off the boards even without their wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin.

Benjamin must have had the first whistle in training camp but there’s something about Seattle that is hard to pick against them they’ve been in this position before. They have all the pressure on them and all of the pressure is on Carolina to win this game because they’ve had such a great season. I’m looking at this one being a low scoring game with a final score of 20-17 Seattle.

AFC Playoff Sun 17th Pittsburgh (10-6) @ Denver (12-4): The fate of the Denver Broncos really depends on the fate of Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. I’m going with Denver in this one. The Steelers are a little banged up right now Antonio Brown is still in the NFL concussion protocol.

The Steelers quarterback Ben Rothlisberger’s shoulder has a sprain and has some ligament damage in there. Denver is primed for this match up and with Big Ben ailing this could be favorable for the Broncos. Overall these playoff games are a rematch from the regular season.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Niners in the Chips, hire Kelly with questions about his player relationships

by David Zizmor

media.philly.com photos: SF 49ers new head coach Chip Kelly who will try and not pull his hair out like he did in Philadelphia

SANTA CLARA–Does new San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly have relationship problems with his ex-players whom he coached at the Philadelphia Eagles? The 49ers will keep an eye on those issues but whenever you get fired from a football team the previous team doesn’t usually say positive things about you or your relationships.

You always have to take these kind of statements with a grain of salt. Before last season started in Philadelphia Kelly took over some personnel responsibilities, he let some players go. He found some new players and a lot of those moves a lot of those players did not work out.

Eagles owner Jeff Lurie was upset that and that might be part of the reason for his dismissal. Kelly isn’t going to get anything regarding personnel responsibilities like he had with the Eagles. He’ll have some input any general manager- coach has that relationship.

David has an in depth look at Chip Kelly and how he’ll mesh in with the 49ers for 2016 listen to the podcast below at www,sportsradioservice.com

Kelly Named 49ers Head Coach

By: Joe Lami

photo credit: tigerdroppings.com SF 49ers new head coach Chip Kelly will face microphones of the Bay Area media next week

After a dreadful year behind first-year head coach Jim Tomsula, the San Francisco 49ers have found their new man in leading the team for the future in Chip Kelly. Kelly was relieved of his duties earlier this year as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, where he finished with a 26-26 record.

49ers’ CEO Jed York announced the excitement of the offensive coach, “We are thrilled to announce Chip Kelly as the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Chip has a proven track record at both the college and NFL levels that speaks for itself. We believe strongly that he is the right man to get this team back to competing for championships.”

Before Kelly took over for the Eagles, he boasted a 46-7 record at the University of Oregon in four seasons in Eugene. He brought the Ducks to be thought of as a national powerhouse with the up-tempo offense that led to a Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl victory.

General Manager, Trent Baalke chipped in “Chip possesses all the qualities we were looking for in our next head coach. He has demonstrated the ability to be innovative everywhere he has coached and has had great success throughout his career.”

While this past season in Philly was a disappointment, Kelly led the Eagles to back-to-back 10-6 seasons in his first two years. He broke the Eagles record in 2014 for most points scored in a season with 474.

“As one of the most historic franchises in the National Football League, I realize the high standards and expectations that this position demands and I embrace the challenges ahead. My immediate focus is to build the best coaching staff possible, one that will maximize the abilities of each of our players and put us in the best position to win football games,” Kelly added.

The addition of Kelly immediately makes one speculate about the future of the 49ers roster and the future of the quarterback position. Colin Kaepernick, who many thought to be on his way out the door could return with the potential of throwing up some insane numbers with Kelly at the helm.

Kelly will be introduced as the 20th head coach of the 49ers next week in Santa Clara.

Golden State Warriors podcast with David Zizmor: With Green hurt Warriors now getting into the really physical part of the schedule

by David Zizmor’

photo credit: abc7news.com Golden State’s Draymond Green  is currently sitting out and resting

OAKLAND–The Golden State Warriors loss on Wednesday night to the Denver Nuggets 112-110 was just one of those things it’s the tough part of the schedule. The W’s have a lot of road games between now and the end of February. It’s the really physical part of the schedule.

The Warriors are coming off a road game and are playing back to back with a game at the Oracle Arena on Thursday night against the Lakers. They’re tired just from the altitude in Denver alone and it’s really tough. Not having Draymond Green Wednesday night that was physical too.

The Warriors did a pretty good physical job on defense but the shots weren’t falling. That might be them just getting a little bit tired and a little worn down. It just seems a week or two their shots haven’t been falling quite as much as their offense has been lacking.

David gives you all the latest on the state of the Warriors this week listen to the podcast below at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Baseball demographics reflect the USA

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo credit: pintablecoluringpages.co.uk One of the very few African Americans in the majors Coco Crisp of the Oak A’s

In the world, only China and India have a larger population that the United States of America. Today, of over 323 million people live in our country, the largest minority is comprised of Hispanics.US government statistics as of 2014 list Hispanics are 17.4% and African-Americans 13.2% of the total US population. It was some time ago that Hispanics passed African-Americans as the largest minority in the United States. in Baseball, Hispanic player participation in the game is much higher than the 17.4% and it keeps growing each year. With the relaxing of relations with the country of Cuba, more Cuban players are coming into the United States and are signed by major league teams.Since the 1800’s Cuba’s #1 sport has been baseball and not even the Cold War could stop Cuban players from coming into the United States.

While Hispanics continue to increase in the major leagues, the same cannot be said about African-Americans, unlike some of the other main professional sports leagues in the country, the NBA and the NFL, Major League Baseball has been struggling in recent decades making baseball more attractive to African-Americans, but not much success there. For example, right here in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Giants, recently signed outfielder Denard Span, and that makes him, the only African-American on their roster as today and the Oakland Athletics with Marcus Semien and Coco Crisp.
Asian players have also been coming to the major leagues, although not in the same numbers as Hispanics/Latinos. According to SABR(Society American Baseball Research)as of 2012 Hispanic/Latino players made 26.9 % of all players in the major leagues, African-Americans 7.2% and Asian players 1.9%. Most recent and according to SBN(Sports Business News)The percentage of Hispanic/Latino players increased from 28.4 percent in 2014 to 29.3 percent on 2015 opening day rosters. The percentage of Asian players decreased from two percent in 2014 to 1.2 percent in 2015.
Statistically speaking, baseball is changing in step with the United States That is only fitting, since baseball still likes to be called The National Pastime.

Kings Lose to Pelicans 109-97

By Tony Renteria

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings are still fighting to shake off an identity of a team that continues to struggle as the host Sacramento Kings lost the visiting New Orleans Pelicans 109-97.  Sacramento faithfully has lost two games for every win this season and as the All Star break gets closer they proving that they are the team there record says they are as they sit 15-23.

The Pelicans sit in last place in the Southwest division but the Kings were not able to defend home court against a team they should be able to put away at home.

The Kings were by DeMarcus Cousins 32 points and 12 rebounds but the he was not able to keep the Kings close in this game, the score was not even as close as the game really was as the Pelicans we up by over 25 points at one point of the game in the third quarter.

The Kings look to bounce back as they head to Salt Lake to face the Jazz on Thursday and Pelicans return home to the Big Easy to face the Bobcats from Charlotte on Friday.

Barracuda beat Gulls in overtime

By: Eric He

San Jose Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer won his 634th career game and it came in grand fashion — a 2-1 overtime win over the San Diego Gulls on the road on Wednesday night.

Draymond Green-Less Warriors Fall In Denver

By Ben Leonard

photo credit: bleachereport.com Golden State’s Stephen Curry’s face says it all in the Warriors third loss of the season

Stephen Curry might be the reigning MVP, but Draymond Green might be nearly as valuable to Golden State. //

Without Draymond Green’s stifling defense, the Warriors (36-3) looked listless on defense in the high altitude at lowly Denver (15-24), falling 112-110 to snap a seven-game winning streak.

Interim head coach Luke Walton decided to rest Green. It made sense — he had been nursing a leg injury that had hobbled him. But it was evident that Golden State certainly missed Green’s athleticism and energy, yielding ten more points than their season average while allowing four Nuggets to score 18 or more points.

Stephen Curry wouldn’t let his Warriors go down without a fight, dropping 38 points while draining 5 of his 12 three-point attempts. However, he might have been trying a little too hard to will his team to victory — he turned the ball over eight times, including a pivotal one with under 15 seconds left, with the Warriors down just two points. With a chance to be the hero, Curry lost his handle on the ball, allowing Denver to sink two foul shots to put the game on ice.

Little-used power forward Jason Thompson took Green’s place in the starting lineup, but was relatively ineffective, scoring just four points in thirteen minutes on the floor. With that total, he almost doubled his minutes played this season, as he had seen the floor for just 18 minutes this season.

Danilo Gallinari led the way for Denver, dropping 28 points despite a poor effort from the field (5-14 FGA) — because he made 17 of 19 free throws. Will Barton also chipped in with 21 points for Denver.
