That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Ken Griffey Jr and Mike Piazza elected to Cooperstown Jr breaks record

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo credit: thesource.com Ken Griffey Jr and Mike Piazza elected to the Hall of Fame class 2016

Ken Griffey Jr established a new record as he received 99.30% of the votes  (440 ballots/437 votes). Three writers did not voted for Ken Griffey Jr, so he will not be the first ever elected with 100% of the votes on  the most famous of sports Hall of Fame, National Baseball Hall of Fame, at Cooperstown, New York. How can three writers not voted for Griffey Jr?  I do not know, maybe those three guys never got to interview him while he was playing or simply they did not like the man. Mike Piazza was the other player elected today to Cooperstown, the catcher with the most career home runs 427, was the Rookie of the Year in the National League in 1993 with the Los Angeles Dodgers hitting .318 with 35 home runs and 112 runs batted in. Piazza got in with 83% of the vote. While Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines, the other two nominees fell short.
Ken Griffey Jr aka “The Kid”and “The Natural”played for 22 years in the major leagues. With the Seattle Mariners from 1988 to1999, then with the Cincinnati Reds from 2000 to 2008 and in 2009 with the Chicago White Sox. A lifetime .284 hitter with 630 home runs and 1,836 runs batted in. His contagious smile, his enjoyment of the game and the God-given talent took over center-field as a rookie for the Mariners and never stopped until over two decades later. He was the first overall pick in the 1987 draft, while in 1988 Mike Piazza was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 1,390 pick and in the 62nd round. Played from 1992 to 2007(16 seasons)finished with a .308 lifetime batting average, 427 home runs and 1,335 runs batted in. Not a defensive specialist but a power hitter, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres and in 2007 briefly with the Oakland Athletics.

Interestingly enough Griffey is the first No. 1 pick to make it, while Piazza is the lowest pick to do so. Nervous,” Griffey said about his reaction to getting the call. “It’s just one of those things where I can’t control — I can control how I play, how I do things — but I can’t control what other people do for you. It’s just a waiting game. It was quite a ride, but to get that call, it’s just unbelievable.” The closest candidates who came up short of the 75-percent threshold for induction were first baseman Jeff Bagwell (71.6 percent in his sixth year on the ballot), outfielder Tim Raines (69.8 percent, ninth year) and closer Trevor Hoffman (67.3 percent, first year), all of whom set themselves up well for 2017. Raines, who jumped up from 55 percent, has one year of eligibility remaining. Bagwell, who rose from 55.7 percent, has four years left.Every player who has received at least as high a percentage as Raines has eventually gotten into the Hall of Fame, via either the BBWAA or the Veterans Committee.

Words can’t describe this honor,” Piazza said on MLB Network. “Truly, truly humbled, truly blessed. I truly want to thank the writers for recognizing my career. It’s something that, man, you just really can’t say. What a tribute to what this country is all about as far the opportunity. You can work hard and really focus and try to do the right thing.”
Local angle: Mark McGwire was not voted in last year of ballot, while Barry Bonds got a total of 36.8% which was an increase of 2.1& from 2014. Other that fell short were Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa, all these names somehow “touched”by the steroids era.
Next Year a Hispanic flavor Unanimous:  For next year, here are the nominees:   Manny Ramirez, Vladimir Guerrero, Ivan Rodriguez,,Magglio Ordonez, and Jorge Posada.

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Barracuda rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the Stockton Heat 4-3 at the SAP Center Wednesday night in San Jose. With the win, the Barracuda’s record improves to 15-10-2-3 good for 35 points and third place in the Pacific Division. Stockton drops to 12-14-0-3 for the season. They currently reside in 7th place. The Barracuda did not play well until the third period. They could not take advantage of several Stockton penalties until late in the game. Trailing 3-2 with under a minute left to play, the Barracuda finally scored on the power play much to the delight of the fans.

The first period did not go well for the Barracuda. The Heat took a 1-0 with 4:24 played when Morgan Klimchuk scored his second goal of the year putting the puck past Al Stalock for the score. Kenny Agostino and former Shark Freddie Hamilton assisted on the play.San Jose had three power play opportunities, but Stockton played very well on the PK and kept the Barracuda at bay. Chris Tierney had a breakaway on the power play at the 12:39 mark but Heat goalie mad a huge stop to deny Tierney.  San Jose went on a power play when Hunter Smith went off for high sticking. The power play didn’t last long as the ‘Cuda’s Joakim Ryan went to the box for slashing. The teams had to play four on four for forty-four seconds before Stockton would have the man advantage. The Heat’s Kenny Agostino scored his seventh goal of the year as he beat Stalock with 49 seconds left in the first period. The assist went to Drew Shore.  The Heat outshot the Barracuda 12-11. Stockton in charge 2-0 after twenty minutes of play.

The second period belonged to Stockton. Each team scored a goal, but the Heat continued to play well. They killed off another penalty and outshot the Barracuda 14-6. San Jose has not been able to take advantage of four Stockton penalties so far, and Stalock has been less than stellar in goal. John McCarthy scored San Jose’s lone goal while Derek Grant notched his fifteenth of the year for Stockton in the period. The Heat leads 3-1 after two periods of play.

The Barracuda played very well in the third period.  They cut the deficit to one when Chris Tierney scored his first goal of the year as a member of the San Jose Barracuda. Jeremy Langlois and Julius Bergman picked up assists on the play. Al Stalock also played very well. He made two big stops to thwart the heat. San Jose tied the game with just thirty-five seconds left to play. The refs called Heat defenseman, Brett Kulak, for a high-stick infraction with just 1:50 left. San Jose pulled Stalock at the one minute mark and had six on four advantage when Barclay Goodrow beat Poulin to tie the game at three.

In overtime, the Barracuda’s Nikolai Goldobin scored the winning goal with just 1:51 left to play in the game. Jeremy Langlois had a breakaway, but Poulin stopped the shot. However, the rebound went to Goldobin, and he didn’t miss.San Jose wins 4-3 in overtime.

NFL Playoff podcast with Tony Renteria: Chiefs open up offense; Roethisberger-McCarron even under center; can the Seahawks return to glory; Cousins gives Wash a boost at home

by Tony Renteria

AP photo of Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins

AFC

Kansas City @ Houston: You really have to look for Kansas City to roll in there the Chiefs Jamaal Charles getting hurt its’ really opened up the offense for the Chiefs. Instead of having one major tool to focus on they moved the ball around. The Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is looking like the Alex Smith of old when he was with BYU.

Smith has an opened the offense, I’m looking for the Chiefs to put this game away early and Houston doesn’t have the offense to keep up with the Chiefs as well.

Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati: These two teams are both cold weather teams, I really have to look to Pittsburgh winning this game on the road. Right now the Steelers are clicking on all cylinders while Cincinnati with quarterback AJ McCarron at the helm can match Steelers quarterback Ben Roethisberger.

NFC

Seattle @ Minnesota: This is got to be one of those old cold weather games as Minnesota is still waiting on when their new stadium to be finished. The Vikings are playing at the University of Minnesota which is outside. Their getting a Minnesota winter in the early part of January. This is going to be a great match up with two teams that are going to rely heavily on the ground game.

Green Bay @ Washington: Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins will start and Washington are very good at home. They do well on the road but they do very well at home and we all know the problems that Green Bay has been having. The Packers are not that really strong. Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers is going to have to have the game his life.

NFL podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Playoff picks for AFC and NFC this weekend

by Joe Hawkes Beamon

photo credit: imgarcade.com KC Chiefs head coach Andy Reid

AFC

Kansas City @ Houston: I’m going with Kansas City this weekend because Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs are red hot. The Chiefs when they went through their losing streaks in the history of their playoffs they faced some tough quarterbacks the Andrew Lucks, Dan Marinos, the Jim Kellys, Peyton Manning twice.

The game against Houston this weekend they’re facing Brian Hoyer he’s a decent quarterback he’s got the Houston system down as quarterback this year. The Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is going to be the best quarterback on Saturday.

Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati: As much as everybody is griping on Cincinnati I like the Bengals this year even though AJ McCarron this year even though he’s starting in the absence of Andy Dalton. McCarron has six touchdowns, 854 yards passing and is 79-119.

He’s really phenomenal McCarron has been holding down the ship for the Bengals he has a real good defense and he knows how to play Pittsburgh. The Steelers in the last 16 games in Cincinnati are 13-3. That’s including regular season and playoffs.

NFC

Seattle @ Minnesota: The Minnesota Vikings Adrian Peterson won the rushing title this year he was by voted best back by far for the title in this year’s voting. Seattle is still Seattle their the two time defending NFC Champions and the former Super Bowl Champs.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson became the first quarterback in NFL history to get 4,000 yards passing, 30 touchdowns, and 500 yards rushing. He’s been red hot lately, the Hawks Marshawn Lynch has missed most of this season and that takes a little off their game.

Golden State Warriors Tuesday game recap: Curry gets kicked in the shins W’s kick Lakers out of court

by Jessica Kwong

LOS ANGELES – If the Golden State Warriors didn’t go into Los Angeles with a sure win on Tuesday night, it became all but guaranteed a couple hours before tipoff, when the Lakers announced that Kobe Bryant would not play due to a sore right shoulder.

As expected, the Warriors claimed a 109-88 victory over the Lakers – who since the New Year were on a three-game winning streak, impressive for their standards. The biggest concern for Golden State during the lopsided match was that their star Stephen Curry kept getting kicked in the same bruised spot on his lower left shin, and kept going in and out of the game until he did not return.

Afterward, Curry called his injured shin, “a magnet, but I’ll be alright.”

“Yes it’s frustrating and annoying and there are a lot of adjectives you want throw in there,” he said. “Long-term, it’s not something that I have to worry about, it’s just playing through an injury that’s there. It doesn’t get worse if I play on it, unless I get kicked, and that’s happened three times since I did it. Hopefully it won’t keep happening again.”

Curry added that he’s been “trying all sorts of pads and stuff,” but he’s not worried about it when he’s out on the floor and that’s his goal.

Warriors’ Interim Coach Luke Walton said he didn’t take the game out of Curry’s hands when he wanted to play – despite Golden State’s double-digit lead throughout – because trainers said Curry could be out on the floor.

“I played with a guy like that,” Walton said, drawing a comparison. “Kobe wouldn’t sit out for anything. Most of the time, he was still able to play at a level that made us a better team. Occasionally, he was shooting left-handed three pointers because he couldn’t lift his right shoulder and Phil (Jackson) had to take him out.”

“But you give players of that caliber the benefit of the doubt – unless the staff says he shouldn’t be there and then we’ll pull him out.”

The game at Staples Center started off competitive, with both teams tied at 12 points, but that only lasted about half of the first quarter. The Warriors took the lead but the Lakers – also without D’Angelo Russell due to a sore throat, kept within about 10 points of the defending champions through the second quarter.

By the second half, the Warriors’ lead snowballed, reaching some 30 points, and dipping down into the 20’s occasionally as the Lakers attempted to fight back. Golden State’s Draymond Green said his team could have shut out Los Angeles at the start of the third quarter, and finally did so by the end of the quarter.

“I think we played ok. I think we played good,” Green said. “I just think, for a while there we could of put them away and we didn’t. And we kind of kept letting them stick around. Other than that, I think we played really well.”

Klay Thompson, the Warriors’ leading scorer with 36 points, called their 33-2 record “surreal.”

“It feels like we’re a good team, but this good” was hard to believe for him. He attributed it to depth and his teammates making sacrifices.

Green came short of a fourth consecutive triple-double.

“Y’all were expecting that. I was just out there trying to do what I do, but it didn’t happen, oh well, I really don’t care,” Green said. “Good game, I didn’t play a good game but we did, so I’m cool with that.”

The Warriors face the Trail Blazers in Portland on Friday.

Kings Lose in Double OT on Williams Buzzer Beater

By Matthew T.F. Harrington

The Dallas Mavericks needed all 58 minutes Tuesday night to beat the Sacramento Kings 117-116. No, that’s not a typo. Deron Williams hit a three-pointer as time expired in a second overtime period to give the Mavs the win at the buzzer.

The Kings (14-21) looked like they’d pull out the win after leading by 7 in the closing minutes of the game. Dallas (20-15) scored the final 8 points of the contest to spoil Sacramento’s night and instead pile upon the game-winner Williams.

Sacramento was trailing Dallas 78-70 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the Mavericks 28-20 to force the tie. Each team was held to only 6 points in the first overtime to end the extra session tied at 104.

DeMarcus Cousins played nearly 49 minutes, producing a game-high 35 points on 15 of 30 from the field. The Kings center hauled in 14 rebounds for the double-double. Rudy Gay added 31 points in the defeat. Rajon Rondo did not play in his return to the team he played for last season before being unceremoniously benched. Starting guard Darren Collison, another former Mav, also picked up a double-double with 14 points and a game-best 12 assists.

Williams led all Mavs in scoring with 25 points while Dirk Nowitzki produced 23 despite going 8-for-19 from the field. JaVale McGee produced the double-double coming off the bench with 13 points and 11 points.

The Kings will be happy to leave Dallas considering they haven’t won there in 22-straight games. They’ll head back to the Capitol to host the lowly Los Angeles Lakers fresh of a drubbing by the Warriors.

NHL podcast with Joe Lami: Iginla gets 600th goal; Oilers look to make big progress under McClellan

On the podcast Joe talks about the illustrious career of the Colorado Avalanche’s Jarome Iginla who scored his 600th goal against the LA Kings on Monday night. Iginla had played much of his career with the Calgary Flames having great success there.

The Edmonton Oilers who beat the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday are an improving team despite being last in the Pacific with a record of 17-21-3 and 37 points. They are led by former Sharks head coach Todd McClellan who has taken this team to another level.

The Sharks who defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 last week and turned around and lost Saturday night to the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 which Sharks team will show up on Thursday when they host the Detroit Red Wings.  Logan Couture is showing improvement since returning from his lower body injury and looked sharp in the game against Winnipeg.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Sharks to face Red Wings which Sharks team will show up?

On the podcast Mary talks about last week’s Sharks win over the Flyers 4-2 and then the Sharks turned around and lost on Saturday night 4-1 to the Winnipeg Jets.  The penalty kill is killing the Sharks in a number of games they face Detroit on Thursday night and hope to get things turned around in the hurry.

The Sharks Brent Burns who is 20th in the NHL with 34 points has helped the club with great offense. The Sharks who are struggling at home desperately wanted to win on Saturday and will have to try and beat the Red Wings to get out of the home loss funk.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Charlie O: Kings riding a lot of highs and lows but loved winning in OKC

by Charlie O Mallonee

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings enjoyed a victory in Oklahoma City for a change getting a healthy victory there on Monday night 116-104. There was a low too when the Kings lost to the Philadelphia 76ers last week. The Sixers came into that game looking like a team on fire.

The Sixers came in and played tough defense they kept Cousins from being the unbelievable force that he could be and Philadelphia came out with a 110-105 victory. At that moment I knew what was going to happen on Saturday afternoon when the Phoenix Suns came to town because whatever team came out against the Suns was the team we were going to see for the rest of the season.

The Kings game in OKC saw the Thunder’s Kevin Durant out with an injury so the Thunder were playing with one hand tied behind their back. Cousins took high advantage of that rebounding a season high 19 and scoring 33 points.
