SANTA CLARA–San Francisco 49ers quarterback  Colin Kaepernick will have left shoulder surgery. The 49ers placed him on the injured reserve list. He is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday in Vail Colorado. Kaepernick is suffering from a torn labrum.

Kaepernick threw for all but one game thus far on the 49ers schedule and he sat out two weeks ago against the Atlanta Falcons when backup Blaine Gabbert got the start in the 49ers victory 17-16. The 49ers promoted backup quarterback Dylan Thompson from the practice squad.

Thompson will serve as Gabbert’s back up in Seattle on Sunday. Kaepernick was probable for this weekend’s game but was a scratch when he was on the injury reserve list on Wednesday. Kaepernick’s performance has suffered for most of the season and the 49ers had lost a good share of their games with Kaepernick under center. There has been talk the 49ers could release Kaepernick after this season is over.
