Jets Bounce By Sharks 5-3

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks’ five-game win streak came to an end at the SAP Center on Thursday night, with the Winnipeg Jets beating their hosts 5-3. Joe Thornton tied Marcel Dionne for 10th all-time in career assists, Joonas Donskoi picked up his 100th career point and Evander Kane had a pair of points in the loss to his former team. Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves and Nikolaj Ehlers had a hat trick to give the Western Conference leaders their 48th point of the year.

The Jets scored first in a wild first period that saw a combined five goals, starting on a miscue by Brent Burns. The defenseman’s point shot went right into defenseman Dustin Byfuglien’s shin pad, resulting in a breakaway. The burly blueliner buried the puck for his 4th goal of the year just 51 seconds into the game.

San Jose tied the game after Joe Thornton and Evander combined on alittle give and go 45 seconds later, with the former Jet Kane scoring to knot the score at 1-1. Thornton’s assist was career assist 1040 for Jumbo, moving him into a tie with former Los Angeles Kings great Marcel Dionne for 10th place all-time in assists.

Joe Pavelski would tip a Kevin Labanc shot past Hellebuyck on the power play 11:27 into the period, his team-leading 22nd goal of the season scored from just outside the crease.

The Jets would again prey on the Sharks luck after a dump-in by Blake Wheeler caromed off the stanchion harmfully back into the slot, where Ehlers could score the easy tally with 7:28 left in the first. Mason Appleton gave his team the lead with a drive-by goal just 1:12 later for his first of the year.

The Sharks looked like they were back on the comeback after Donskoi scored his 6th of the year with just seconds left in the period on a opposite side redirection from a Kane pass. The Sharks’ forecheck forced Hellebuyck to turn the puck over behind his net, and Kane’s hard work on the boards pried the puck loose. Kane was potent all evening against his former team, firing 10 shots on goal to go with four hits. He played for Atlanta and Winnipeg from 2009 to a midseason trade to Buffalo in the 2014-15 season, playing in 361 games and amassing 222 points.

The Jets would put the dagger in the Sharks with just over three minutes left in regulation after a turnover on a breakout put the puck on the stick of a Jets forward on a 2-on-0. Martin Jones played the puck aggressively, allowing Ehlers to score his second of the night. He also would add the hat-trick after being awarded an empty net goal after a Sharks player impeded with his path to the vacant cage. Blake Wheeler assisted on all of Ehlers’ goals.

The Sharks look to get back to their winning ways with a pair of home games before the holidays, with the Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes coming to town for Saturday and Sunday tilts, respectively.

San Jose Sharks Podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Sharks show their will against one of the NHL’s best the Jets despite loss

On the San Jose Sharks Podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh:

Despite Tuesday’s overtime loss 5-4 at SAP Center the San Jose Sharks gave it their all something that lacked earlier this season. The Sharks taking on one of the NHL’s best the Winnipeg Jets. The game that kind was a high point was the game the Sharks won in Anaheim 6-2 last Sunday at the Honda Center. The Sharks are definitely getting stronger.

Defensively their working things out they’re finding a balance on defense and offense at least to win these games. If your going to lose it’s better to lose in overtime to one of the NHL’s elite teams like the Jets. The Sharks captain Joe Thornton got injured a right knee injury towards the end of the game on Tuesday night it was not disclosed when he would be returning but Thornton has been a huge piece of the Sharks recent resurgence.

Sharks Rally to Earn a Point, But Jets Win 5-4 in Overtime

By Matthew Harrington

SAN JOSE–Things could have gone worse for the San Jose Sharks during Tuesday night’s contest against the Winnipeg Jets at SAP Center, but then again, things could have gone a lot better. The Sharks managed to erase 3-0 and 4-3 deficits, but fell in overtime 5-4.

Joe Thornton was injured in the final moments of the contest and his status is currently unknown.

Winnipeg’s Bryan Little scored easily 18 seconds (remember that amount of time for later) into overtime, his second goal of the game, to hand Sharks goalie Aaron Dell his first loss in five games. Dustin Byfuglien circled the Sharks net, then passed from the goal line cross-crease to Little on the backdoor for his 10th goal of the year.

It almost looked like the Sharks wouldn’t need overtime to pick up a point (possibly two) in this game after a huge momentum swing in the final five minutes of the game. Timo Meier did an excellent job staying strong on his stick in the slot to find a rebound of a Marc-Edouard Vlasic shot to score with 4:20 left in regulation and tie the game at 4-4.

Byfuglien, known for his antics after the whistle, clipped Meier with his stick in the celebration and was sent off for a penalty. The Sharks would get caught with too many men on the ice 1:07 into the man-advantage though, and then had to kill off a Jets power play to hold on for overtime.

If the first few moments of the game were any indication, the Sharks should be satisfied with just the loser point. The Jets sucked any energy out of the SAP Center crowd after Mathieu Perreault scored just 18 seconds into play, then just over four minutes later Joel Armia really silenced the hometown fans after his backhand toss ricocheted past Aaron Dell for a 2-0 Winnipeg lead.

The situation went from bad to worse for the Sharks after Tomas Hertl found himself making his way to the showers after being handed a game misconduct for his hit on Dmitry Kulikov 8:13 into the period. The Czech forward was also assessed a five-minute major, putting his team on the shorthand for five minutes.

The Sharks were “fortunate” to survive the penalty kill only yielding one goal to the second best power play in the NHL. Bryan Little beat Dell for a 3-0 lead just 11:56 into play.

Leaders step up when times get toughest, so it was Sharks captain Joe Pavelski who changed the morale of team teal in the waning seconds of the first. After a flurry of shots on Jets netminder Connor Hellebuyck couldn’t find the back of the net, Pavelski crossed the blue line into the slot to pick up a turnover and rifle the puck into the net.

With believability back in the Sharks locker room trailing 3-1 heading into the first intermission, San Jose still had its work cut out for them. Perhaps inspired by Kristi Yamaguchi’s presence at the Shark Tank, Logan Couture followed up a perfect pirouette with a shot to Hellebuyck’s right for his 18th goal of the season with half the game in the books. Joel Ward and Brendan Dillon assisted on the goal to bring San Jose within one at 3-2.

Chris Tierney, pressed into power play placement following Hertl’s ejection, ran with his opportunity. Tierney slipped into the slot in perfect one-timer position with the perfect one-time assister Joe Thornton holding onto the puck on the other side of the ice. Thornton threaded the puck through the Jets penalty killing box, Tierney dug in for a full-power one-timer and with 6:35 left in the second period, suddenly San Jose was tied 3-3.

Joel Armia would pot his second goal of the game 11:38 into the third to give Winnipeg their 4-3 lead, which set up Meier’s game-tying strike and the overtime period. A collision in front of the Sharks bench in the final seconds cost the Sharks their top center in the three-on-three skate.

Up Next: San Jose continues its home stand, welcoming the New York Rangers to the SAP Center Thursday night.

The Sharks topped the Rangers 4-1 October 23rd at Madison Square Garden behind stellar play of Martin Jones, who’s currently out with a lower body injury.

Sharks lose third straight with 4-1 loss to Jets

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks finished a five game road trip 1-2-2, capping it off with a 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place on Sunday.

Logan Couture scored a power play goal, and Sharks goaltender Martin Jones made 26 saves in the loss to Winnipeg.

Matt Hendricks and Marko Dano scored for the Jets and Mathieu Perrault scored twice. Andrew Copp and Tyler Meyers earned two assists each in the game and Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves in a losing effort.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Sharks head coach Pete DeBoer said:

What did we get, four out of 10 points? Could have easily had six which would have made it good. We didn’t. You know, we’re in every game. The only game I thought was really poor was the Dallas game, throw that one out. The rest of the trip, the third period in Ottawa I didn’t like but I liked our first two. Tonight I thought we hung in there in a tough situation and gave ourselves a chance anyway. So, overall we’re okay. We’re not perfect, we’re not exactly where we want to be but could be worse.

Brenden Dillon and Matt Hendricks started Sunday’s game off with a fight at 2:22 of the first. At 12:42 of the first period, Matt Hendricks scored the only goal of the period. After Andrew Copp blocked a pass, Armia won the race to the puck and moved it up ice where Copp and Matt Hendricks were flying through the neutral zone. Hendricks ended up with the puck and broke away to beat Martin Jones for the lead.

The Jets extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal just after a power play expired 11:03 into the second. Copp forced his way past Brenden Dillon along the boards, then danced away from Tomas Hertl before getting the puck back to Jacob Trouba up at the blue line. Trouba took the shot and Marko Dano redirected it under Jones.

Timo Meier drew a tripping penalty to Tyler Meyers a few minutes later. Halfway through that penalty, Dustin Byfuglien was called for hooking to give the Sharks a 5-on-3. The Sharks didn’t do much more than wear the Jets down with the extra penalty, but after the first penalty expired, Logan Couture found an opening to get a hard shot through. It went off the pipe and in. Assists went to Joe Pavelksi and Brent Burns.

Chris Tierney was set to the box after being pushed into the Winnipeg goaltender, putting the Jets on the pwer play in the final minutes of the second period. Wheeler took a shot from above the circle that Mathieu Perrault was able to tap by Jones. It only took the Jets 25 seconds to score with their formidable power play. They had six power play goals in five games before Sunday, and it was not a wonder. They worked very quickly and didn’t spend much time standing around. Assists went to Blake Wheeler and Myers.

DeBoer singled that goal out in his post-game comments: “Really, the third goal was really the killer. I don’t understand and I’m still looking for an explanation on how that’s a penalty but that’s what you deal with.”

The Jets had yet another power play start in the first two minutes of the third period, when Melker Karlsson was called for hooking. The Sharks killed that off and Joel Ward added a short-handed breakaway for emphasis. Despite that hopeful start to the period, the Sharks could not score and gave up an empty net goal to Perrault at 16:48.

San Jose’s power play went scored once in three chances, and they killed three of four penalties. Brent Burns got credit for eight shots on goal, Logan Couture took five and Timo Meier took four.

The Sharks next play after a five day break in San Jose against the Arizona Coyotes at 7:00 pm PT.

Sharks Score 4, Shut Out Jets 4-0

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks scored four times and shut out the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. Goals came from Tim Heed, Tomas Hertl, and two from Logan Couture. Sharks goaltender Martin Jones made 38 stops for the shutout. At the other end, Jets goaltenders faced a combined 33 shots and each allowed two goals.

Despite giving up 38 shots, the Sharks defense got the job done. Winnipeg has one of the best records in the NHL this season, 14-5-3 going into the game against the Sharks. After the game, Sharks assistant coach Steve Spott said: “To hold them off the scoreboard…they’ve got a high powered offense over there, so to do what we did tonight, it was excellent.”

The Sharks saw yet another uncounted goal in the first period of Saturday’s game. Just 3:37 in, Joel Ward found the puck under Steve Mason’s left pad and poked it in the net. The whistle blew before the puck went in, as the official had lost sight of the puck.

Perhaps used to such setbacks by now, San Jose responded with two viable first period goals. The first was a power play goal from Tim Heed with assists to Kevin Labanc and Joe Thornton. Heed’s one-timer came from high in the slot and went in off the post. The second goal came at 19:44 of the first, from Logan Couture. Assists on the second goal went to Justin Braun and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Mason stopped Vlasic’s shot but the rebound went to the far side of the blue paint, where Couture closed fast and beat the goalie to the puck.

At the end of the first period, the shots were 13-9 for the Sharks.

The Jets changed goaltenders to start the second period, putting Connor Hellebuyck in for Steve Mason. Mason evidently sustained an upper body injury.

Winnipeg closed the shot gap in the first five minutes, to 16-15, but the Sharks gunked up the Jets offense so that those shots were not terribly dangerous. At the 6:05, Dylan DeMelo went to the box for slashing Joel Armia and the Jets were on their first power play of the game. The Sharks penalty kill was stifling and only allowed one shot on goal to the power play.

The Sharks had to face another slashing penalty at 9:56, this time on Brenden Dillon. The Sharks held the Jets to just one shot again, only this shot was a harrowing affair. The puck slipped past Martin Jones and and was snatched back from the brink by Joel Ward’s quick stick.

Dylan DeMelo went back to the box at 13:02, this time for interference. Instead of clogging up their own zone during this penalty kill, the Sharks jumped out with a short handed rush from Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl. Couture carried the puck in with Hertl on his right, and no Winnipeg player between them and the goalie. Couture took his time selecting the shot and added a third tally to San Jose’s collection. Assists went to Tomas Hertl and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

The second period shot count was 16-5 Winnipeg, for a total shot count of 24-18 Winnipeg.

At 5:08 of the third, Dylan DeMelo was the subject of another penalty, taking a high stick from Joel Armia. The Sharks power play did a pretty good job keeping the puck out of their own end, but could not get organized in the Jets’ end of the ice. They did get credit for two shots.

By the midpoint of the period, the Sharks had closed the gap in shots, adding eleven to their count, while limiting the Jets to just four.

The Sharks had a bit of a scare at 13:28 when Martin Jones had to take a moment to talk to one of the trainers. After the game, the team would only say that he was being evaluated.

Tomas Hertl extended the lead to four with an empty net goal at 16:50, with assists from Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns.

The Sharks will begin a four game road trip on Tuesday in Philadelphia at 4:00 pm PT.

Jets Blow Past Sharks 4-1

By Mary Walsh

AP photo & Winnipeg Free Press Winnipeg Jets Drew Stafford gets congratulated after finding the back of the net against the Sharks on Saturday night

SAN JOSE– On home ice Saturday, the San Jose Sharks fell by a score of 4-1 to the Winnipeg Jets. It was yet another disturbingly lackluster performance from the Sharks, seen almost exclusively at home this season despite a remarkably good road record. Of the overall performance Saturday, head coach Pete DeBoer did not mince words:

That was an egg, it was just… I don’t have an explanation. Top to bottom, really poor effort, poor execution, sloppy, soft, not enough adjectives to describe it. You have to give Winnipeg credit, they were desperate, they won all the races, they won all the battles, they won the goaltending battle, not much more then that, it pretty much sums it up.

The Sharks seemed to have the game well in hand for the first ten minutes. Outshooting Winnipeg and controlling most of the play, it was probable that they would have the first power play. They did.

At 12:05 of the first, Ben Chiarot went to the box for delay of game. The first minute of the power play went fine, but then the Sharks started having some trouble getting through the neutral zone. The Sharks’ game of keep away was interrupted by an interception of Joel’s Ward’s backhand pass. The interloping Blake Wheeler skated in with Drew Stafford for a two on none against Martin Jones. The short-handed goal went to Stafford. It was just the second short-handed goal scored against San Jose this season.

The Sharks did not score on that power play, and they were on their heels for most of the rest of the period.

As the second period began, the shots stood at 8-7 Sharks, the score 1-0 Jets. The first hits came in the Sharks’ zone, as the Jets made the first move. During a four player puck battle along the boards, someone caught Joe Thornton near the right eye, but nothing was called.

At 2:45, Joel Armia skated into the Sharks’ zone, went around Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and put the puck on net. Matt Halischuk was standing by at the crease. With Justin Braun on hand but unable to stop him, Halischuk scored his first of the season from very close range.

Penalties started to stack up then, with Toby Enstrom going to the box for interference at 2:58, and Joe Pavelski going for an illegal heck to Bryan Little’s head just 18 seconds later. The four on four time created by those penalties favored the Jets, and they passed the Sharks up on the shot clock.

Bryan Little did go to the room for further evaluation but returned to the game before the period was half over.

At 8:29, Dustin Byfuglien was called for slashing. Under a minute after that, Brent Burns got the Sharks on the board with a hard shot from just above the faceoff circle. Assists went to Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. The assist extended Thornton’s point streak to eight games.

On the next shift, the Sharks finally managed to stop the Jets in the neutral zone, and then Tommy Wingels tried to take the puck back the other way. Instead, he was tripped by Toby Enstrom and the Sharks went on another power play.

The power play started with a rush by the Jets into the Sharks’ zone. The Sharks stopped them from scoring another short-handed, but when they did get set up in the o-zone, San Jose’s plan seemed too complex to work. They made too many passes, too creatively executed, while time ticked off the clock. With 47 seconds left in the power play, they were taking a draw in the defensive zone.

With 5:31 left in the second, Justin Braun went to the penalty box for delay of game after sending the puck over the glass. It took the Jets 26 seconds to score on their power play. The goal was Mathieu Perrault, with assists going to Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler.

Joe Pavelski went to the box again witbh 4:02 left in the period, this time for too many men on the ice. The Sharks did kill that penalty, and showed a touch of vim in the final minutes of the period. Tommy Wingels even got tangled up with Dustin Byfuglien after the buzzer. Fortunately for the Sharks, nothing came of that as the officials intervened.

Al Stalock was in the Sharks’ net to start the third period. He had only been there for a minute and 13 seconds when he skated to the bench for a delayed penalty all. Blake Wheeler went to the box for tripping Tomas Hertl. The Sharks’ power play created a few chances but the Jets’ penalty killers broke up most of their attacks quickly.

Tommy Wingels and Matt Halischuk went to the box shortly thereafter for unsportsmanlike conduct. Two minutes of four on four did not produce any more goals.

Pete DeBoer has not done a lot of in-game line changes this season, but by the third period on Saturday, only one forward line and one defensive pair looked as it had during the first. When the game started, Melker Karlsson was on a line with Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton, Couture was back with Marleau and Ward. Hertl, Wingels and Nieto were a third line, while Donskoi, Tierney and Zubrus made up the fourth. Dillon was paired with DeMelo, Burns with Martin and Vlasic with Braun.

In the third period, Karlsson was with Tierney and Zubrus. Donskoi was up with Marleau and Ward, and Logan Couture was out with Thornton and Pavelski. On defense, Paul Martin ended up paired with Dylan DeMelo, and Brendan Dillon with Burns.

Of course, the netminders had also swapped positions.

Al Stalock tried a nice stretch pass to Joel Ward with about six minutes left, but Ward could not do much with it. The puck got to him but he didn’t have any help in the zone.

Al Stalock went to the bench for the extra attacker with nearly three minutes left in the game. With 2:43 left, the Jets scored into the empty net after handily escaping the Sharks in the neutral zone. The goal was Nikolaj Ehlers’ and it was unassisted.

The Sharks next play the Detroit Red Wings. That game will be on Thursday, January 7, at SAP Center, at 7:30 PT.
