The Golden State Warriors, down to eight healthy players, found a way to beat the Phoenix Suns Saturday night 115-99. Draymond Green was out with left knee soreness, Jordan Poole and Ky Bowman were out with ankle injuries.

Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr had to figure out another starting lineup. He inserted Dragan Bender and Juan Toscano-Anderson at forward and guard. Andrew Wiggins returned to action after suffering back spasms last Thursday. Eric Paschall, Kevon Looney, and Mychal Mulder were the only players to come off the bench.

The Suns easily won the first quarter 41-28. They took an early lead, and the Warriors played catchup for the first 12 minutes of play.  The Warriors offense picked up in the second quarter. The Warriors outscored the Suns 33-24 to finish the first half trailing 65-61.

The Warriors trailed for most of the third period. They were able to tie the game at 72. The Suns could not get their offense going at all in the period. The Warriors went on 16-0 run to finish the period leading 92-81. The Warriors won the third quarter 31-16.

The Warriors continued to hold the Suns’ offense in check as they held them to just 18 points. The Warriors did not fold down the stretch and finished with the win 115-99.

Game Notes and Stats- The Warriors had two former first-round picks of the Suns in their starting lineup Saturday. Marquese Chriss, number eight, and Dragan Bender, number four, in the 2016 draft had to enjoy beating the team that let them go.

Chriss finished the night with 11 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Bender had 13 points and eight boards. Rookie Eric Paschall, thriving coming off the bench, led the team with 25 points, three boards, and four assists. Damion Lee had 20, and Kevon Looney added ten.

Mychal Mulder, on a ten-day contract and playing in his second NBA game, had 14 points and six rebounds. Andrew Wiggins finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Steve Kerr had this to say about his team’s performance: “The joy in that locker room right now, the relief, everybody’s smiling and happy and excited “Our team’s played hard all year and competed, but at times has been out-manned. So every win becomes sweeter.”

The Suns, trying for the eighth spot in the Western Conference, had to wonder how they could have lost at home to the lowly Detroit Pistons and the Golden State Warriors.

They did lose Kelly Oubre Jr. to a torn meniscus. However, injuries are part of the game, and the Suns need someone to step up and fill the void. That did not happen in the last two games. Devin Booker led the Suns with 21, Deandre Ayton 20, Mikal Bridges 15, Elie Okobo 14, and Dario Saric 11.

The Warriors shot 47% from the floor. Phoenix shot 41%. The Warriors out rebounded the Suns 49-40. The Warriors recorded 30 assists. For a team with so many new players, the stat had to please the coaches. The Warriors defense forced the Suns to commit 19 turnovers. The Warriors turned the ball over just ten times.

The Warriors announced that their team leader, Steph Curry, will not play Sunday against the Washington Wizards. Curry will play on Sunday in Santa Cruz for the G-League Warriors. Steve Kerr wants him to get some additional conditioning before returning to the NBA grind.

The Warriors meet the Washington Wizards at the Chase Center Sunday night at 5:30 pm.

Warriors win second in a row beat Wizards 125-117

The Warriors met the host Washington Wizards Monday night in the Nation’s Capitol. The Warriors were without the services of D’Angelo Russell, who was sidelined with a bruised right quadriceps.

Without the team’s leading scorer, the Warriors had to come up with a way to beat the high-scoring Wizards. The Wizard’s leading scorer, Bradley Beal, has scored 30 or more points in his last six games. Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr inserted backup guard Jacob Evans into the starting lineup to go along with the other guard Damion Lee. Without Russell, the Warriors were counting on Draymond Green to be the playmaker.

The Warriors started the game with guns blazing. They scored forty points in the first quarter and led the Wizards 40-36 after the first 12 minutes of play. Alec Burks, coming off the bench, paced the Warriors with 13 points. The Warriors made seven threes in nine tries.

The Warriors continued to play well. They increased the lead to nine 49-40. The Wizards offense woke up, and they tied the game at 54. The game was tied at 61 when Damion Lee connected on a three. The Wizards responded with a two-point bucket to make it 64-63. The Warriors finished the first half with an 8-0 run to lead 72-63.

The Warriors scored the first seven points of the third period to lead 79-63. They increased the advantage to 90-71 to lead by nineteen. The Wizards fought back and cut the deficit by six to finish the period trailing 99-86.

As mentioned earlier, the Wizards have a high-powered offense. Thirteen-point deficits have been overcome many times in the final period of play. The Warriors knew that they had to keep putting points on the board and stop Bradley Beal.

Beal, in his eighth season in the league, started making shots, and the Wizards made a run to make it a five point game 113-108 with 4:23 to play. Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson came through with buckets to preserve the Warrior win. Beal scored 15 points in the period, but the Warriors kept the other Wizard players from scoring to win 125-117.

Game Notes and Stats- The Warriors won their second in a row on the road. They had lost 15 of 17 before the last two games. It was their sixth straight win over the Wizards.

The Warriors improved to 12-39. The Wizards fell to 17-32.

The Warriors had six players in double figures.

Alec Burks had a career-high 30 points.

Burks made five threes in ten attempts. Glenn Robinson was second in scoring with 22. Damion Lee finished with 19, and he, too, connected on five threes. Eric Paschall had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Draymond Green also had a double-double with 12 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, Marquese Chriss added 13.

Bradley Beals paced the Wizards with 43 points. Davis Bertrans tallied 19, and the big man from Latvia made five threes.

The Warriors shot 49.4% from the floor and 50% from beyond the three point arc. They Outrebounded the Wizards, and they recorded 31 assists.

The Warriors finish the five-game road trip Wednesday night when they meet the Brooklyn Nets. It will be a homecoming of sorts for D’Angelo Russell. Russell came to the Warriors in the sign and trade deal that sent Kevin Durant to Brooklyn.

The game will start at 4 pm.

Warriors improved play still lose to Pacers 129-118

The Utah Jazz’ Rudy Gobert (27) and the Golden State Warriors Willie Cauley-Stein (2) scramble under the basket for the loose ball at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Fri Jan 24th

By Jerry Feitelberg

San Francisco- The Golden State Warriors hosted the Indiana Pacers at the Chase Center Friday night. The Warriors were hoping to rebound after being blown out by the Utah Jazz Wednesday night.

The Warriors played with a lot of energy. They moved the ball well as they recorded 31 assists. They shot 49% from the floor, and they made 19 threes. It was not enough as they turned the ball over 20 times, and Indiana put 33 points on the board as a result of the Warriors sloppy play.

The Pacers, who average about 27 three-point attempts per game. Knocked down 17 in 28 tries Friday night. The Pacers like to make a lot of two-point buckets, and Friday night’s game was no exception. They shot 57% from the floor to beat the Warriors 129-118.

The Warriors got off to a good start early in the first quarter. They led 22-16 about halfway through the first period. The Pacers got their offense going, and they went on a 13-0 run to lead 29-22. The Pacers finished the first quarter leading 35-30.

The Pacers played well as they increased the lead to 50-38. The Pacers defense held the Warriors scoreless for over three minutes in the period. The Warriors continued to turn the ball over, and the Pacers capitalized on the Warriors miscues.

The Pacers finished the first half with a 16-point advantage 67-51. D’Angelo Russell led the W’s with 16. Marquese Chriss was the only other Warrior in double figures with 10. The Pacers’ T.J.Warren led his team with 21. Doug McDermott coming off the bench knocked down 15, and he helped propel the Pacers to the 16-point advantage.

The Warriors turned things around in the third period. D’Angelo Russell made several threes, and the Warriors went on a 14-2 run to cut the deficit to six points as they trailed 80-74. The Pacers regrouped and were able to finish the third period leading by 98-86.

In the fourth quarter, The Warriors continued to make threes. Jordan Poole made two consecutive threes to make it 110-103. The Pacers refused to fold. They went up by thirteen 121-108. The Warriors went on a 7-0 run to trail 121-115. The Pacers were not fazed, and they went on to win 129-118.

Game Notes and Stats- The Warriors announced that they have traded center Willie Cauley-Stein to the Dallas Mavericks for a second-round draft choice. The Mavs needed to replace former Stanford star, Dwight Powell. Powell suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon injury. He will miss the rest of the season and part of the 2020-21 season, too.

With the loss, the Warriors drop to 10-37. Indiana won its eighth game out of the last ten played. They are 30-16 and are within two games of being in second place in the Eastern Conference. They will be in the playoffs. Malcolm Brogdon did not play due to an injury, and the Pacers’ Victor Oladipo is close to returning to action.

The W’s were led by D’Angelo Russell’s 37 points. Russell was nine for 13 from behind the three-point arc. Glenn Robinson had 18. Chriss finished with 13. Alec Burks had 11 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Draymond Green recorded a double-double with ten points, six boards, and 11 assists. Jordan Poole, Omari Spellman, And Eric Paschall each added nine.

T.J.Warren had 33 for Indiana, Doug McDermott finished with 24, Jeremy Lamb and Damontas Sabonis each had 16. Sabonis pulled down ten rebounds to record a double-double. Aaron Holiday had 12. His brother Justin, a former Warrior, contributed eight to help the Pacers win.

The Warriors go on the road for the next two weeks. They meet the Philadelphia Sixers Tuesday night. Thursday they are in Boston, Saturday they play the Cavaliers. They go to Washington and Brooklyn before returning home to face the Lakers on February 8th.

The Sacramento Kings (7-8) jumped back into the win column on Sunday afternoon by defeating the Washington Wizards 113-106 in game two of their four-game road trip. The victory did not come easy, but the Kings never let their concentration wavier which allowed them to win the game.

Sacramento outscored Washington (5-9) in three of the four quarters. They also avoided the dreaded “third quarter letdown”. The Kings outscored the Wizards 33-30 in the third quarter, and then, they outscored the Wizards 33-28 in the fourth quarter. That is another major step forward for the Kings.

Kings starters carried the day

The Sacramento starting five scored 79 of the teams 113 total points. Harrison Barnes scored a game-high 26 points. Richaun Holmes recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Buddy Hield put 18 points in the book. He shot 4-for-14 from the field with 3 of his field goals coming from behind the 3-point line. Hield drove the lane very hard and went to the foul line seven times and was successful on all seven attempts. He also dished out five assists.

Cory Joseph had a big game for the Kings scoring 10 points and distributing five dimes. Joseph hit 5 of 10 shots from the floor.

All of the Kings starters expect Bjelica played well over 30 minutes in the game.

Sacramento bench

The key man off the bench was Bogdan Bogdanovic. “Bogi” scored 21 points shooting 7-for-16 from the floor while hitting 3 of 9 attempts from 3-point land. He also went 4-for-6 from the free throw line while dishing out four assists.

Focus on the Wizards

  • Bradley Beal scored a team-high 20 points while distributing eight assists. Beal has been averaging 29.6 points per game this season.
  • Thomas Bryant put up 14 points and added eight rebounds
  • Former King – Isaiah Thomas – scored 17 points against his old team.

Addition to the Kings roster

After having several outstanding games in the G-League with the Stockton Kings, Kyle Guy has been called up to join the Kings NBA roster. He joined the team in Washington but did not play.

Up next

The Kings have the unenviable task of playing the second game of a back-to-back on the road in Boston on Monday night.

Kings battle, but fall to Wizards 121-115 in DC

By: Jeremiah Salmonson

In the first half, it was a tale of two quarters for the Kings. The Kings appeared to get off to a quick start against the Washington Wizards, scoring the first five points, but that would prove to be just a mirage at the Capital One Arena Monday evening. After that, De’Aaron Fox and company struggled mightily in the first quarter. The Kings were only able to muster 20 points while shooting 29% from the field and making two of three from the stripe.  The Wizards, on the other hand, were able to score 28 points to take control of the game in the first.

In the second quarter, the Kings flipped the script. The Kings put up an impressive 40 points to take the lead in the game 60-59 going into the locker room at the half. At one point, Fox went on a run to score 15 points in just over 3:30. Going into the locker room, the Kings appeared to have some confidence after a very up and down half. Going into the third, it was imperative for the Kings to keep the momentum and add onto the lead they managed to capture in the second.

However, the Kings weren’t able to do that. They came out in the second half much like the performed in the first quarter. They gave up their second 31-point quarter and only managed to score 21 points, a near carbon copy of the first quarter, but the Kings weren’t done yet.

The Kings managed to retake the lead in the fourth with 3:21 remaining on a Willie-Cauley Stein free throw. Unfortunately, they lost steam after an encouraging run. They missed a couple of key shots while the Wizards made some key shots and that proved the difference in the game.

When it was all said and done, the Kings gave up six too many points in the early quarters and fell to the Wizards 121-115. Notable scoring performances were De’Aaron Fox with 23 points for the Kings and Bradley Beal with 27 points for the Wizards. This game ended the way so many Kings games have ended lately. The Kings were close but were unable to finish the game in the final minutes.

Kings head coach Dave Joerger summed it up perfectly in postgame, “This game sucks, this one hurts.” Indeed, this game hurt the Kings’ playoff chances as they fall 4.5 games back of the Clippers and Spurs with 16 games left.

Close but no cigar for the Kings:

FG PCT: Kings 45.1%, Wizards 46.5%
3PT PCT: Kings 33.3%, Wizards 37.8%
REB: Kings 47, Wizards 47
AST: Kings 28, Wizards 29
TO: Kings 16, Wizards 17
BLK: Kings 3, Wizards 1

Scoreboard Watch:

Kings fans will be locked in Monday evening to the Clippers vs. Celtics matchup on NBA TV. The Kings desperately need the Clippers to lose to keep the deficit to four games behind the eight seed in the Western Conference.

Up Next:

The Kings travel to Boston to take on the Boston Celtics on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 PM PST.

The Golden State Warriors won their ninth game in a row and their eighth straight on the road as they defeated the Washington Wizards at Capital One Arena Thursday night in Washington. The Warriors are now 34-14 for the season. The Wizards gave the Warriors a tussle even though they are missing three important players. John Wall, Dwight Howard, and Markieff Morris were not available due to injury. The Warriors connected seven times in 20 attempts, but they, with DeMarcus Cousins clogging up the middle, were able to score 70 points in the paint. Cousins, in 24 minutes of action, scored 17 points along with six boards and three assists. Cousins also connected on a 3-pointer.

The Wizards went on an 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter With the score 106-103, Cousins scored to put the Warriors ahead 108-103. The Wizards’ Chasson Randle, who starred for the Stanford Cardinal during his college days, connected on a three to close the gap to two 108-16. The Warriors’ bench, led by Shaun Livingston. The Wizards scored the last seven points of the game, but it was too little, too late. The Warriors win 126-118

Game Notes and Stats: The Warriors’ Steph Curry led the team with 38 points. It was the 19th time this season that Steph has scored 30 or more points in a game. Curry was 14 for 24 from the floor and made but two threes in 8 tries. Kevin Durant had 21, Draymond Green 7 to go with 15 rebounds and 7 assists. Klay Thompson scored just 9. Cousins finished with 17. The Warriors’ bench was led by Andre Iguodala’s 11 points. McKinnie and Kevon Looney each had 8 and Shaun Livingston added 7.

Trevor Ariza led the Wizards with 27 points. Beal had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Satoransky also had a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists.

The Warriors shot 56.8% from the floor and held the Wizards to 46.3%. The Warriors recorded 34 assists, and it was the 20th game of the year with 30 or more assists. They outrebounded the Wizards 5-36. On defense, the Warriors had five steals and 6 blocks.

Up Next: The Warriors travel to Boston to face the Celtics on Saturday at the TD Garden. Game time will be at 5:30 pm.

The Celtics, under coach Brad Stevens, have fought the Warriors tooth and nail. The Celtics have a formidable lineup featuring Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward, Hayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, and Terry Rozier.
