Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips:

#1 Morris, the UCLA Bruins (1-1) on Sunday didn’t waste anytime jumping on the Cal Bears (0-1) at the Rose Bowl taking a 27-10 lead to get things started in the first half.

#2 Lots of defense from both teams in the second half where UCLA was the only team who scored in the fourth quarter a touchdown as the Bears get trounced in the opener 34-10.

#3 Morris, would you say a lot of this game loss for Cal had to be attributed to all the schedule changes the Bears had to go through they started out the week not even knowing how to prepare for a game at ASU that might not be played, then it was canceled once they got to ASU and were told on Friday night to get to Los Angeles for a Sunday morning game against UCLA.

#4 As tough as the loss was for Cal how important is it for the Bears to at least to have got this first game in the books considering all the changes and preparation they put into practicing this week.

#5 The Bears play their second straight road game this time next Sat Nov 21st at Oregon State (0-2). The Beavers took a close loss against the Washington Huskies (1-0) 27-21 at Husky Stadium in Seattle on Saturday. The Beavers and Huskies played to a narrow margin in the first half with the Huskies taking the half time lead 24-21. The second half was all defense with UW getting the only score in the half with a field goal and a 27-21 final. Morris set up the Cal Bears at OSU for this Saturday.

#1 Michael what does the cancelation of Saturday’s game mean for Cal as they were to open the season at home against the Washington Huskies at Memorial Stadium?

#2 Cal head coach Justin Wilcox says the team takes all kinds of precautions against the spread of Covid 19 but sometimes that’s like plugging multiple holes in a row boat.

#3 One unnamed player and his co-position players are quarantined, the unknown player is asymptomatic and keeping with Berkeley’s Health Department’s protocols the player’s teammates who share the same position with him are quarantined.

#4 The Bears have this game canceled and coach Wilcox says this is a huge disappointment for the alumni, fans, faculty, school, coaches and players and worst it opening day in college football is something that every campus is always looking forward to.

#5 So the Bears will try to again this time at Arizona State on Sat Nov 14th it will be the Bears first game and the Sun Devils second game of the season in the brief six game campaign.

#1 Not enough offense as you stated in the headline of your article that the Cal Bears (11-16) were stopped cold in their game in Seattle against the Washington Huskies (13-15)

#2 You always hope at least three people can shoot for double figures but Cal only had one player do that that was Matt Bradley who finished with 14

#3 For the Huskies they were draining shots all first half ending up with 43 points and sinking Cal to just only 26 points a clear indication of what was to come for the rest of the game

#4 The second half didn’t prove any more inspirational as Cal was spiraling again with only 26 points and the Huskies came up strong again with a 44 point second half.

#5 The Colorado Buffaloes (21-7) who have won three of their last five games but lost their last game which was at home are coming to Haas Pavilion Thursday night in Berkeley to face the Golden Bears could this be one of those games where Cal has a shot at bringing out some of those surprises

Second-half comeback sparks Cardinal past Washington 61-55

A late Stanford rally, capped by Tyrell Tyler’s 3-pointer with under two minutes remaining in regulation, helped the Cardinal defeat visiting Washington 61-55 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

Daejon Davis scored 12 points in the second half, including his game-tying 3, for the Cardinal (13-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-12). Stanford has won six of its last seven games.

On the defensive end, the Cardinal held Washington scoreless over the last 3 minutes and 12 seconds, and outscored the Huskies 26-8 in the final 11 minutes. In addition, Stanford held UW”s Isaiah Stewart to a season-low four points – his first game under 12 points this season.

Stanford stayed in the game with the combined assistance of Spencer Jones, James Keefe and Oscar da Silva. Jones scored eight of his 14 points in the first half, Keefe added seven first-half points and da Silva bagged all 11 of his points in the second half.

Leading the Huskies was Jaden McDaniels, who accomplished his first career double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds for Washington (11-5, 1-2). Nahziah Carter was next for the Huskies with 16 points.

Oakland native Quade Green was declared academically ineligible by Washington on Thursday. In his place, Elijah Hardy made his first csreer start.

Stanford bounced back from a rough start, as the Cardinal shot 28 percent from the field – 3 of 14 behind the arc – in the first half. Meanwhile, Washington led by as many a 12 before White connected on a 3-pointer to cut Stanford’s deficit to 28-20 at halftime.

Davis underwent concussion protocol after being hit in the eye nearly seven minutes into the first half. He returned just before halftime.

The Cardinal hosts Washington State on Saturday.

Cal Bears Saturday game recap: Electrifying win for Cal 20-19 at UW; 1250 lighting strikes delays game for 2 1/2 hours

1250 lighting strikes was all it took to hold up the second game of the season between the visiting Cal Bears and the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium in Seattle on Saturday night. The 2 1/2 hour delay restarted the first quarter of play around 10:30pm and the game ended around 1:30 am. The Huskies had a 14-point spread coming into the contest, but with 15% of the crowd staying after the delay, the Bears were able to take advantage of a quieter stadium and edged the Huskies 22-21.

The loss marked the end to the Huskies’ 15-home game win streak. The Bears put the ball through the uprights for the win and a 17-yard field goal for the one point winner. Earlier with the Huskies up 19-17 with just second to the two minute warning Patrick Henry booted a 49 yard field goal. The Bears got that second wind and answered back marching the ball to the Washington 17 and with eight seconds left got the game-winning field goal from Greg Thomas for the win.

Husky Stadium is a house of horrors. No team has won there in 15 straight home games, and for the Huskies, it was a set of different circumstances with the lighting and mother nature taking the crowd out of it and that it all changed. It was a see-saw game to begin with. In the second quarter at 14:57, the Huskies kicker Patrick Henry kicked a 36-yarder to put Washington on the scoreboard 3-0. At 7:59 Salvon Amhed rushed for 21 yards to put UW on top 10-0.

The Bears got on the scoreboard with a field goal from Thomas that made it 10-3 Washington at 3:43. In the third quarter, the Bears Marcel Duncy would score twice. He rushed for a 20 yards at 11:56 to tie the game up at 10-10. At 5:50, Patrick Henry booted a 21-yard field goal that put the Huskies back on top 13-10. Still, in the third quarter, Duncy got the ball for an eight-yard rush to get Cal back on top with 50 seconds left in the quarter for a 17-13 lead.

In fourth quarter action, the Huskies’ Henry kicked a 25-yarder at 7:10 to make it a 17-16 contest and the Huskies regained the lead 19-17 at 2:09 when Henry booted a 49-yard field goal. It was all for naught as the Bears quickly marched down field with under two minutes left in the game and got in field goal position for Thomas to boot the game winner for a 20-19 victory with eight seconds left in the game.

The Bears quarterback Chase Garber threw for 111 yards and the Huskies quarterback Jason Eason threw for 162 yards and one interception.
