#1 Josh Bailey and Cal Clutterbuck of the New York Islanders each scored in the third period of Friday night’s game and Isles goaltender Thomas Greiss stopped 19 shots against the Washington Capitals for a 2-0 win.

#2 The Calgary Flames’ Sam Bennett couldn’t be contained, scoring two goals as well as the go-ahead goal as the Flames took a two-goal win past the Detroit Red Wings 6-4 on Friday.

#3 Phil Kessel got a power play goal at 4:09 in overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Arizona Coyotes 3-2. The Pens won it on a 4-3 power play after slashing was called on the Coyotes’ Richard Panik.

#4 Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks got a goal and an assist and Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko stopped 36 shots, beating the visiting Buffalo Sabers at Rogers Center in Vancouver.

#5 The Ottawa Senators’ Bobby Ryan and Mark Stone didn’t waste anytime in the second period, scoring 13 seconds apart to win their fourth straight game, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes in Ottawa 4-1.

#1 Former Major League pitcher John Wettland, who pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers, was arrested for continuous sexual abuse with a child under 14. The abuse was reportedly to have taken place between 2004-2009.

#2 NFL Championships game and the road to the Super Bowl. London makes his predictions: New England and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC.

#3 In the NFC Championship: The Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints. One of these teams are just one game shy of getting into the Super Bowl.

#4 The Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will be replacing the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers in the Pro Bowl. In the regular season, Luck completed passes 67.3 percent of the time for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns.

#5 The NHL All-Star game will be in San Jose on Saturday, January 26 without Alex Ovechkin, who’s the Washington Capitals star.

#2 San Jose Sharks got two goals in 39 seconds after Sharks were down 2-1 in the third period. Brett Burns and Joonas Donskoi scored the two goals.

#3 The Nashville Predators’ Artemi Panarin scored two goals and an overtime goal to help Nashville beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3.

#4 The Tampa Lightning’s Brayden Point scored the game-winning goal with 3:15 left in the and got an empty-netter to help Tampa Bay with a 3-1 win.

#5 Crosstown win for the New York Islanders’ Josh Bailey, who scored with 1:26 left as the Isles defeated the New York Rangers 4-3.

#3 The Carolina Hurricanes (18-27-5) defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets (24-14-3) 4-2. For the Canes, Michael Ferland (12), Dougie Hamilton (5), Greg McKegg (1), and Sebastian Aho (16) were Friday night’s goal scorers.

#4 Tyler Seguin (14) and (15) was all the Dallas Stars needed for offense as Seguin scored in the first period and in overtime for a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals Friday night.

#1 The Anaheim Ducks on Friday night got a key win over the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime when the Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf got a breakaway goal that rang the post to give the Ducks a 3-2 win over the Canes. Getzlaf’s goal came at 1:15 in the overtime.

#2 Nicklas Backstrom hadn’t had a hat trick since 2014, but got one for the history books on Friday night for the Washington Capitals as this team is hot with seven straight wins as they picked up a three-goal win over New Jersey.

#3 The Florida Panthers’ Alexsander Barkov at 2:26 in overtime got the game-winner as the Panthers edged the Buffalo Sabres 3-2. Buffalo lost it’s second game in two nights.

#4 There was no stopping the Calgary Flames as Mikael Backlund got two goals and assist to put away the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night 4-1.

#5 The St. Louis Blues in overtime got a goal from Colton Parayko to defeat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2. The last place Blues improved their record to 9-12-3 while the Avs dropped their record to 15-6-5 Avs are in second in the Central. The Avs snapped their six-game win streak with the loss to the Blues.

#1 For the Los Angeles Kings goaltender Calvin Peterson, it was a homecoming facing the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night at the United Center. Peterson was a player with the Chicago Young Americans of the Midwest Elite Hockey League; played at the United Center when he was with Notre Dame during the Frozen Four. Peterson stopped 34 shots in the Kings victory over the Hawks 2-1.

#2 The St Louis Blues who come to SAP Center tonight against the San Jose Sharks picked up a huge victory at T Mobile Center on Friday in a 4-1 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights. Goals from Ryan O’Reilly–two of them help pace the Blues to victory.

#3 The red-hot Toronto Maple Leafs who have won six of their last seven including a win last Thursday over the San Jose Sharks defeated the Anaheim Ducks 2-1. The Leafs Morgan Reilly scored an overtime breakaway goal for the winner. It was Reilly’s ninth goal of the season and 26th point.

#4 The Washington Capitals’ Nicklas Backstrom didn’t waste any time scoring a power play goal 22 second into overtime to help edge the Colorado Alvalanche 3-2. The Caps’ Alex Ovechkin and Devante Smith-Pelly also scored.

#5 The Dallas Stars shutout the Boston Bruins behind Jason Dickinson’s goal a rebound at 1:34 in overtime. The Stars’ Ben Bishop stopped 23 shots. Big win for the Stars and tough loss for the Bruins.

NHL podcast with Matt Harrington: Jackets on a roll, get ninth win past Caps; Leafs with five-goal win, 6-1, over New Jersey; NHL matchups for tonight

#1 The Columbus Blue Jackets (9-6-1) got by the Washington Capitals 2-1 Friday night. The Jackets got a goal from Oliver Bjorkstrand at 17:16 in the first period and Anthony Duclair got goal number seven of the season at 5:09. Not much offense from the Caps.

#2 The Toronto Maple Leafs (11-5-0) and the New Jersey Devils (6-7-1)  skated to a 6-1 five-goal Leafs victory Friday night. The Leafs scored four goals in the second period and they’re not slowing down.

#3 The Vancouver Canucks (10-7-1) are in Buffalo (9-6-2) tonight. How dangerous, how improved are these Canucks this season?  The Sabers won it by a goal 4-3 in a shootout beating a tough Canucks team after having a two goal deficit.

#4 The Chicago Blackhawks (6-7-3) face the Philadelphia Flyers (8-7-1) at the Wells Fargo Center. Is this an evenly matched game or do the Flyers have the home ice advantage when the puck drops tonight? The Flyers blanked the Blackhawks 4-0 for the Hawks seventh straight loss.

#5 Tonight, the Golden Knights (7-8-1) are in Montreal (8-5-3). Taking a look at the Knights’ offensive leaders: Jonathan Marchessault leads the team with 14 assists, seven goals, and William Karlsson eight assists, and for the Montreal Canadiens, Max Domi 19 points, nine goals, and Jeff Petry with 11 assists.
