Utes snap four game skid at Cardinal expense 79-65

Stanford’s Thursday matinee at Salt Lake City didn’t go well, as Utah snapped a four-game losing streak with a 79-65 Pac-12 men’s basketball win over the Cardinal.

Timmy Allen led the Utes with 22 points and eight rebounds. Alfonso Plummer was next with 16 points for Utah (5-5 overall, 2-4 Pac-12), which had two games postponed since mid-December. Brandon Carlson added 12 points and four blocks, and Mikael Jantunen had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Daejon Davis was back in the Cardinal lineup after missing five games with an injury and scored a season-high 19 points. In the process, Davis became the 49th for Stanford (8-4, 4-2) to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Ziaire Williams scored 17 points, and Oscar da Silva was held to 11 points and two boards.

Utah used a 14-2 run at the end of the first half to surge ahead and spent most of the second half with a double-digit lead. The closest Stanford got was within nine points with less than four minutes remaining.

A 7-0 run, including five straight points by Jantunen, solidified Utah’s lead with 3 ½ minutes to play. The Utes shot 49 percent from the field, including 4 of 17 behind the arc and 25 of 30 free throws. Utah also outrebounded the Cardinal 37-26 and outscored Stanford 34-16 in the paint.

The Cardinal were 9 of 18 on 3-pointers, but shot only 29 percent (8 of 30) on 2-pointers.

Stanford’s Rocky Mountain road trip continues Saturday, when it travels to Boulder to face Colorado. Tipoff is scheduled for noon Pacific Time.

#1 Morris how relieving is it that Cal (6-7) finally got in the win column with defeat over the Washington Huskies (1-9) on Saturday?

#2 The Bears got a six point win over the Huskies 84-78 did the game appear to look a lot closer and was there any point in the game that the Bears had to be concerned about holding onto the lead.

#3 Matt Bradley is still out of the line up with an injury but Cal forward Andre Kelly has helped picking up the slack with leading the Bears in scoring on Saturday with 22.

#4 Grant Anticevich has made a return with four points and five assists. Talk about how he’s looked in his return and how those assists helped out.

#5 Can the Bears keep it going they head to Colorado (8-3) the Buffaloes are 3-0 at home and have won their last game beating a very tough Oregon Ducks  (9-2) team 79-72 last Thursday. The Buffaloes have a game tonight in Utah (4-4) before hosting Cal on Thu Jan 14th.

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal women’s (3-0)  game for Friday night vs. UC Davis (1-0) has been canceled due to coronavirus protocols. Santa Clara County does not allow sports of any kind to be played there until early January.

#2 Stanford women’s head coach Tara VanDerveer’s who is one game away from tying the late former Tennessee Vol’s head coach Pat Summitt’s record for wins could have come Friday. As a result Stanford will play at Cal on Sunday and VanDerveer with a win over Cal could tie Summitt’s record.

#3 The Stanford Cardinal (2-2) in football win over the Washington Huskies (3-1) last Sat Dec 5th was huge it evened the Cardinal win loss record at 2-2  and it was the Cardinal’s second straight win 31-26.

#4 Stanford quarterback Davis Mills threw for 252 yards and one touchdown, running back Austin Jones carried twice for two touchdowns and running back Nathaniel Peat ran for one touchdown in the Stanford victory.

#5 Jerry, the Cardinal close out the season against Oregon State (2-3), the last time these two teams met it was last season as it will be the two clubs first meeting of 2020. The Beavers in their last game lost to the Utah Utes (1-2) in a close game 30-24 and the Beavers upset the Oregon Ducks (3-2) on Nov 27th 41-38 could you see this one being as close as the Big Game was when they edged out Cal by just one point?

#1 The one game that stands out for the Cal Bears is the loss they took against the Washington Huskies getting walloped 87-52. That got Cal head coach Mark Fox to regroup and the Bears came out and won their next two games against some tough schools Utah and Colorado.

#2 The Stanford Cardinal got a huge win over the Colorado Buffaloes 72-64. The Cardinal are No.21 and got help from leading scorer Bryce Wills who played with a sore ankle and led with a key lay up and 19 points in the win on Sunday.

#3 San Francisco Giant catcher Buster Posey feels like he’s back into the swing of things and a good example of that is when he went yard after hitting a two run home run in the third inning of a spring training game on Sunday against San Diego. He’ll be crucial for the Giants line up.

#4 While sitting on the bench and waiting to get the okay to return to action Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry is hoping to get back in the line up for Golden State from his broken bone in his left hand.

#5 It was almost like a one on one contest when the New Orleans Pelicans Zion Williamson who finished with 35 points against the Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James with 34 in the Lakers win over the Pelicans 122-114 on Sunday.

#1 After Cal (13-16) beat the Utah Utes on Saturday they got inspiration and also took out the Colorado Buffaloes (18-5) last Thursday teams that are both tough customers

#2 Cal’s offense went all out five players with double figures Matt Bradley 21 points, Grant Anticevich 17, Paris Austin 15, Andre Kelly 15 and Joel Brown  11.

#3 It was a hard fought game that went into overtime and it showed that a good team can come back late in the game like the Bears did

#4 The Bears struggled a good portion of the season what has lit their fire and has this team turned around?

Cardinal stun No. 21 Buffaloes in Pac-12 hoops 72-64

Stanford took a large step toward solidifying its chances of reaching the NCAA tournament with a 72-64 men’s basketball victory over No. 21 Colorado Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Cardinal (20-9 overall, 10-7 Pac-12), and Colorado’s first three-game losing streak of the season.

Bryce Wills led the Cardinal with 19 points on 9-of-13 field goal shooting. Oscar da Silva was next with 16 points, followed by Daejon Davis and Tyrell Terry with 12 points apiece.

Wills, da Silva and Spencer Jones each grabbed five rebounds. Davis had five assists and Jones had two blocks, three assists and three steals.

Colorado’s top scorer was Tyler Bey with 17 points, followed by D’Shawn Schwartz with 14. McKinley Wright IV added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Buffaloes (21-9 overall, 10-7 Pac-12), who held a 30-29 rebounding edge.

Aside from an early Colorado lead, Stanford led most of the game. A Wills basket with 8:13 to play. The Buffs responded by scoring 10 straight points on three hoops by Wright and two by Bey.

The Cardinal endured a four-minute scoring drought, ended on a short jumper by Wills. Colorado proceded to miss its next seven shots.

By beating Colorado, the Cardinal are assured of a winning conference record going into the final weekend of the regular season, and can still finish with a possible second-place tie.

The Cardinal travel to Oregon State on Thursday.

#1 Morris the Bears (10-13) tallied their lowest point total for 2019-20 with a 60-45 loss in Utah (14-9) and Bears head coach Mark Fox tried to explain how to fix the offense that looked like they recovered in games against Stanford (16-7), OSU (14-9) and Oregon (18-6).

#2 When you look at the miniscule number of only 45 points scored was it a matter of Utah’s ability to shut down all of Cal’s offensive efforts and playbook or Cal just went right back to the former offense they were before the Stanford game?

#3 The Utes Timmy Allen who led Utah with 21 points said after Saturday night’s game that he was stress free, that he could almost do whatever he wanted on offense does that speak to Cal’s lack of stopping Utah’s offense or Allen really was that good to do whatever he wanted with the basketball

#4 The Bears Matt Bradley had only 13 points on Saturday night he at times was well covered and couldn’t take the kind of shots he normally takes

#5 The Bears go back to the drawing board this time they go back to Berkeley and face the Arizona schools first this Thursday against Arizona (16-7) and then against Arizona State (15-8) on Saturday can they get back that old mojo they had before they went to Utah?

Utes outlast Cardinal in overtime 64-56

Utah used a 14-6 overtime run to knock off Stanford 64-56 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.

Freshman guard Jaxon Brenchley hit a 3-pointer from the left baseline that gave the Utes a 57-53 lead with 2:08 to play in overtime. After a defensive stop, Brenchley penetrated the lane and dished off to Branden Carlson for a dunk, increasing Utah’s lead to six at the 1:10 mark of OT.

Stanford was 2 of 10 shooting in the extra period.

The Cardinal had the last possession of regulation. After a clock malfunction forced a five-minute monitor review, Stanford inbounded from mid-court. Tyrell Terry’s 25-foot jumper missed at the horn.

Stanford (16-6 overall, 5-4 Pac-12) had its last lead at 50-49 on a Terry jumper with 49 seconds remaining in the second half. Utah’s Timmy Allen hit one of two free throws with 3.9 seconds left to tie the game at 50-50.

Allen and Carlson led the Utes (13-9 overall, 3-6 Pac-12) with 15 points apiece, with Riley Battin adding 11, and Rylan Jones finished with six assists.

Battin led Utah rebounders with 11 boards, with Carlson next with 10 rebounds and eight blocks, as the Utes outrebounded Stanford 39-37.

Terry was the Cardinal’s top scorer with 14 points, followed by Daejon Davis with 12. Oscar da Silva added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Bryce Willis finished with nine points.

The Cardinal shot 35.4 percent from the field (23 of 65, 6 of 22 3-point), while Utah shot 36.8 percent (21 of 57, 6 of 19 3-point).

Utah led 28-22 at halftime.

The Cardinal’s road trip continues Saturday afternoon in Boulder, Colo., when they visit No. 24 Colorado.
