Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Bally’s waiting for green light before doing Vegas stadium construction

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry, talk about the MLB fans now getting behind the movement to try and get John Fisher to sell the Oakland A’s by the “Sell the team” chants. It happened on this last road trip for the A’s in Colorado and in Los Angeles.

#2 Jerry, talk about some of the owners who are not to favorable to relocation and in the A’s case this has to be the biggest protest against a team relocating since the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants coming out west.

#3 Some owners and sources mentioned New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner is not too excited about moving a storied team like the A’s to Vegas and playing in a much smaller park in the smallest TV market.

#4 Jerry, a Bally’s executive said there is not a lot of room for error in the design and roofing of the Tropicana ballpark. The A’s have consulted with competing architects who are vying to design a final rendering for the new Vegas ballpark.

#5 Bally’s and the Tropicana said Thursday that everything is on hold until the MLB owners take the relocation vote in November. Although the feeling from Bally’s seems 85% certain that the owners will vote in favor of the new park but their not taking any chances just yet.

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: Roof for A’s new Vegas ballpark gives you two choices, inside and out; Verlander back in the heart of Houston; plus NFL news

Ex Mets Max Scherzer (left) and Justin Verlander. Scherzer was dealt to the Texas Rangers on Sunday and Verlander went to the Rangers on Tuesday (AP News file photo)

On MLB The Show podcast with Jessica Kwong:

#1 Jessica, the new Las Vegas Tropicana ballpark will feature a translucent roof that will give you some sun but your protected from the outside temperatures which can get well over 100. The Las Vegas A’s were at one time considering a retractable roof but this will be a fix roof and windows can be opened to get the fans some air. The covering set up will be similar to Allegiant Stadium where the Raiders play.

#2 Justin Verlander has found his heart back in the heart of Texas once more getting dealt back to Dusty Baker and the Houston Astros. Verlander who pitched for the Mets this season. Verlander was signed with the Mets for two years worth $86.7 million the Mets will be on the hook for $35 million of Verlander’s salary as he heads to Houston.

#3 Jessica, the Baltimore Orioles (64-41) are jelling they’re 1.5 games in first place in the AL East and have won six of their last ten games. They just recently acquired right hand starting pitcher Jack Flaherty from the St Louis Cardinals to shore up the pitching staff. Flaherty was 7-6 with an ERA 4.43 with St Louis.

#4 The New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rogers says he’s willing to take a $35 million pay cut. Rogers said he was willing to take the pay cut so Jets general manager Joe Douglas could pursue some more talent to shore up the team. Rogers gets $112 million and will get $75 million in guaranteed money for the 2024-25 seasons.

#5 New York Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said that Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton broke the unwritten code by talking to USA Today about Hackett negatively. Payton said that Hackett’s 15 games with the Broncos last season was one of the worst jobs in the history of the NFL. Payton since has said he was going to call Hackett to apologize but Hackett said Payton never made that call.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jim on Bases: A’s get translucent ceiling idea from Raiders; Owners to sneak relocation vote in Nov after World Series

The A’s are planning on installing a translucent roof at their new Tropicana ballpark in Las Vegas similar to what the Las Vegas Raiders are using for their roof at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (photo from Raiders.com)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jim on Bases:

#1 Jim, instead of a retractable roof a Las Vegas A’s team has decided on a translucent roof similar to the roof that the Las Vegas Raiders have at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

#2 The cost for the retractable roof would run an amazing $1.5 billion almost the cost of the ballpark itself.

#3 So the see through roof will fit the size of the Tropicana ballpark which will sit on nine acres of land and the A’s are hoping this answer their roof issues.

#4 The A’s are waiting for the renderings from architect Gensler whose based in Las Vegas and BIG who combining forces with HNTB. The contractor with the best rendering will be the one to do the official rendering for the Las Vegas ballpark.

#5 The relocation application is expected to be voted on in November after the renderings are submitted. Commissioner Rob Manfred and the MLB owners have scheduled all A’s relocation issues for after the World Series and after the topic of baseball is pretty much put to bed and not face the pressure of the fans.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: Why MLB owners are taking so long to vote on Las Vegas ballpark

Will owners such as New York Yankee owner Hal Steinbrenner agree to waving a relocation fee and having the Oakland A’s move to the smallest ballpark and TV market in MLB, in Las Vegas? (New York Post file photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said back in early June that the owners would take a vote on the Oakland A’s new Las Vegas ballpark by the end of June, here we are in the early days of July and the jury is still out is this just a matter of the owners haggling over the issues of the A’s relocating.

#2 The owners have to consider the pressure that the A’s must sell out every single event plus concerts and shows at the Vegas ballpark to meet their $380 million tax credit obligation running 30 years, in their view that’s a huge ask and some owners may think that’s just impractical.

#3 The other issue for the owners that doesn’t sit well is the A’s will be moving from the tenth largest market to the 40th smallest market in baseball the owners have always been conscientious about revenue and profit some owners think that this actually a step backward.

#4 The competitiveness of the sports and entertainment dollar is at hand and the A’s knowing this want to have a start time of games at 4:00pm PT because live shows and entertainment with dinner usually start at 7:00pm so the game would end in time for people to go to the next venue. This may not sit well with the owners because they may want primetime televised games for their own teams back east and have the A’s come on Pacific time prime time and there is no guarantee a 4:00 pm start time would sell games out. Is the 4:00pm start practical?

#5 There is also the fact that many Nevadans who were polled during the Nevada State Legislative special session at 87% voted no for public use of a new stadium. The group organization “Schools over Stadiums” is gathering signatures for a ballot measure to put education first. Education in Nevada which is 49th in the US. The measure would stop spending $380 million in public money over a new ballpark. If the measure makes the ballot for this November’s election and gets over one million votes to stop the public funding of the Vegas ballpark Senate Bill 1 would be dead and the A’s might be forced to go back to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao to talk turkey again regarding Howard Terminal.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Were horses traded in the Nevada Legislature in order to approve the A’s Vegas ballpark?

Oakland A’s have billboards up and around Las Vegas extending their congratulations to the recent NHL Stanley Cup champions Vegas Golden Knights. The A’s are already trying to make inroads in the Las Vegas community. (photo by the Las Vegas Review Journal)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Las Vegas Review Journal got a letter from a reader that says they rarely disagrees with the Journal saying that there will be new taxes and the Nevada tax payer will be on the hook for the new Las Vegas A’s ballpark at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino.

#2 Amaury, the paper points out, the average wage for the Nevada citizen $44,000, the average salary for a player is $724,000, while A’s owner is a multi billionaire. The paper goes onto to say that the citizens should not have to pay for a wealthy owner who owns a ball club.

#3 Amaury, a vote on the A’s relocation could come as soon as next week. This would be well ahead of the MLB drop date of Dec 2023. Will the MLB owners vote no because there is no share of relocation money to be divided or will they vote yes because the next owner who wants to move can do so without paying the relocation fee?

#4 Amaury, how interesting do you find it that despite 87 percent who were polled in a written opinion poll at the Nevada Legislature were against the funding of public dollars for the new A’s ballpark the Nevada Legislature had voted 25-15 in favor of funding the park worth $380 million in tax credits.

#5 Amaury, I know you wrote about this in your column yesterday that gambling is in the veins of those who live in Vegas and baseball is coming to casinos right outside of the ballpark and across the street from the park and that asks the question should lifetime banned players Shoeless Joe Jackson of that famous 1919 Chicago Black Sox team and former Cincinnati Reds player-manager Pete Rose be reconsidered for induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame?

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: A’s show grit in splitting with Rays; Owners only ones standing in way for A’s move to Vegas

Oakland Athletics’ Tony Kemp dives safely into third on Esteury Ruiz’s single against the Tampa Bay Rays during the seventh inning at the Oakland Coliseum on Thu Jun 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 The Tampa Bay Rays Luke Raley belted the game winning 4-3 go ahead home run in the top of the eighth inning to hand the Oakland A’s their second loss and a split in the four game series Thursday afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum.

#2 The Rays got help from their rookie starter Taj Bradley who struck out the first A’s six hitters and set the tone early in the contest. Bradley finished with 11 strike outs for the game. Bradley did give up a home run to the A’s slugger Seth Brown in the bottom of the fifth inning.

#3 Daniel, during their seven game win streak and even in their last two loses to the Rays to close out the four game series the A’s were always in the game. On Thursday down 3-0 the A’s came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game that was a character that the A’s lacked until reason.

#4 The Rays are going well with their win on Thursday they became the first team this season to win 50 games. Taking that in consideration the A’s got a split against the Rays for the A’s to battle back it’s been a real mind over matter series for Oakland.

#5 Daniel just to get some updates the owners are preparing to vote on the relocation of Oakland to Las Vegas. If eight owners vote to oppose that would stop the relocation how much does MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred have influence on the owners vote for the A’s move to Vegas?

#6 Daniel, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo who signed off on SB1 which moves the stadium forward for construction and the park would sit in a “sports and entertainment improvement district” put together by the Clark County Commissioners. The way the park would be paid off by tax increment funding that would use all tax revenues in the district to pay back the $380 million in bonds.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Oakland A’s Nevada Assembly vote could be razor close

From left to right Jeremy Aguero, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Hill, and A’s President David Kaval, at the 35th Special Session of the Legislature regarding SB1 the $380 million in public funds for the Tropicana Ballpark in Las Vegas on Jun 7, 2023. The second special session reconvenes on Mon Jun 12, 2023 (Nevada Independent photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Nevada State Assembly are suppose to meet and vote today on SB1 the Tropicana ballpark initiative that will send the bill to the senate for another vote. Sources say that the votes are close the legislation were suppose to vote last Thursday but that vote was adjourned and now it’s supposed to be today.

#2 This is a second special session do you think the reason for the hold up on the vote is because some in the assembly are under pressure to get this bill through while other assembly people are holding out because they don’t want to vote for a $385 million bill that helps pay for a ballpark with public money?

#3 One of the other questions that has been weighing heavy was if the A’s were to get the Las Vegas ballpark they need to meet selling out every game plus concerts or shows at the Tropicana venue to meet the annual payments to pay for the ballpark. How big of an ask is to say that every game and every concert at the A’s Las Vegas ballpark needs to be sold out to meet the economic need?

#4 The issue of government involvement from Congresswoman Barbara Lee who represents Oakland and Alameda County the 12th Congressional District wrote a letter saying that she and many of her constituents are frustrated that MLB and the Oakland A’s failed to deal in good faith and that they had a deal with Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao that was almost ten percent complete.

#5 The A’s walked away saying they had a binding deal in Las Vegas fast forward they have moved again from the Wild Wild West location to the Tropicana location. Could congress make a move saying the A’s and MLB failed to let the process of the Howard Terminal deal works its way through but dropped the deal and took the offer in Vegas.

MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O: Phils manager tossed for clock reset issues; Twins Polanco back on IL for hamstring injury; plus more

On the MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Philadelphia Phillies manager Ron Thompson was ejected after plate umpire Roberto Ortiz refused to reset the pitch clock after Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola requested a new baseball. Ortiz had threw out several baseballs and requested new ones and Ortiz felt that he had reached his quota of disposed baseballs. Thompson came out to argue that Ortiz should have reset the clock back from 10 seconds to 20 seconds with a runner on base in the sixth inning. Crew Chief Bill Miller got most of Thompson’s heat after ejecting Thompson, while Nola was facing the Los Angeles Dodgers David Peralta. Thompson questioned how Ortiz knew for sure that Nola was trying to stall for time by throwing out baseballs.

#2 The Minnesota Twins second baseman Jorge Polanco is back on the ten day IL due to a left hamstring. Polanco returned to the line up on June 1st from being out with the left hamstring injury. Polanco is hitting .250, with five home runs, 16 RBIs in 30 games.

#3 Los Angles Dodgers pitcher Shelby Miller was place on bereavement leave on Saturday. Miller 32, 1-0 ERA 2.57 and has relieved in 24 games for the Dodgers. Friday night Miller pitched two innings striking out three in two innings of work.

#4 The Oakland A’s for the first time have a won four straight games. The A’s who have baseball’s worst record at 16-50 and are 26.5 games in last place in the AL West. The A’s took two of the last three games in Pittsburgh and the first two games of a three game series in Milwaukee. Is it possible that they might have turned a page or too early to tell?

#5 Charlie lastly, the saga of the $380 million tax credits that the Oakland A’s are seeking from the state of Nevada and Clark County continues as the Nevada Assembly adjourned Thursday and will return on Monday to vote on whether or not to approve the bonds. If the bonds are not approved the A’s will have to find another deal to work out possibly with the City of Oakland and Mayor Sheng Thao who has a deal from the previous Howard Terminal bargaining session. If the Nevada Legislature approves the stadium bonds the Nevada State Assembly must approve the measure before Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo signs off on the deal.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: A’s might not have enough votes to pass Nevada ballpark bill in the Assembly

From left to right, Community Benefits Planning Consultant Yolanda King, Oakland A’s vice president Catherine Aker and A’s president David Kaval sit at a committee meeting regarding SB1 the public funding for the A’s ballpark at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino on Wed Jun 7, 2023 at the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City NV (photo from the Nevada Independent)

On the A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, the Nevada State Assembly who were supposed to vote on Thursday on using public funds to tax credit the proposed Tropicana ballpark but once again the vote has been delayed and is expected to resume on Monday.

#2 Both members of the senate and assembly after haggling all day on SB1 have adjourned extending the special session. The Senate and Assembly had adjourned last Monday without an initial committee vote and no vote had taken place all of last week.

#3 Throughout the day at the Assembly Legislature assembly members and lawmakers were around with Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo who was signing bills. SB1 is still being debated as no decision and no vote as of yet. Democratic senators are looking for health care benefits for kids, food for the poor and elderly and school subsidies.

#4 Democrats who make up a majority of the Legislature 13-8 have expressed frustration over the lack of changes in the A’s ballpark bill Sen. Rochelle Nguyen (D-Las Vegas) said “To say I’m extremely disappointed that no work has been done on this bill over the past 10 days is an understatement.”

#5 Daniel, among some of the changes that Democratic lawmakers are pushing for is entertainment tax that would need to be applied at A’s home games. The NHL’s Las Vegas Golden Knights, the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders and the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces are exempt from the entertainment tax which would have been 9 percent. Also the A’s would need to make the same contributions like they had in Oakland to food banks in Las Vegas.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: Special session possibly needed for A’s ballpark vote past Jun 5th deadline

The possible future new home of the Las Vegas Athletics at the Tropicana Casino and Hotel as seen on May 9, 2023 (file photo Nevada Independent)

On the A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 Daniel there is talk now that some owners are against the Oakland A’s getting a free pass from being allowed not have to pay for the relocation fee to Vegas and it’s not sitting very well with the owners.

#2 One thing about not enforcing the relocation fee is that this might set a precedent for future moves in MLB and clubs will want that relocation fee waved.

#3 If MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was to wave the relocation fee that might make a difference in how owners will vote and that might have them vote no on the A’s moving out of Oakland.

#4 Daniel in the event that the Nevada State Assembly votes no on public funding for the Tropicana ballpark at the tune of $395 million. $185 from the State of Nevada and Clark County $145 million. There has been talk that the A’s will seek other cities that will have them and not return to Oakland. That said the Mayor of Oakland Sheng Thao has said that she would take a phone call from the A’s if it doesn’t work out in Vegas.

#5 The Assembly met in Carson City as you know last Monday Memorial Day and it sounded very much like a favorable meeting for the new park but two items stand in the way the one we talked about at the top of the show with MLB owners possibly objecting to move the A’s because they don’t have to pay a relocation fee and the other public pressure on the Nevada Assembly showing in a recent poll that over 80% of Las Vegas residents are opposed to using public funds to pay for the park and 21% are in favor for using public funds for the park.

#6 Sacramento has also shown interest in the A’s moving to Northern California in the event that the Las Vegas deal falls through.
