WTA Suspends all Tournaments in China

The Women’s Tennis Association is suspending all tournaments in China, including Hong Kong. The announcement was made by WTA Chairman and CEO Steve Simon. This decision comes after Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai alleged she was sexually assaulted by Zhang Gaoli, former Vice Premier of China.

This suspension of activities also includes Hong Kong, aside from China. After Peng made the announcement on social media the Chinese government deleted her post on the site Weibo and also her account. For weeks there has been concern for the safety of the Chinese tennis star.

Mr. Steve Simon said: “Unfortunately, the leadership in China has not addressed this very serious issue in any credible way. While we now know where Peng is, I have serious doubts that she is free, safe and not subject to censorship, coercion and intimidation,” Simon said in the statement. “The WTA has been clear on what is needed here, and we repeat our call for a full and transparent investigation – without censorship – into Peng Shuai’s sexual assault accusation.”

It is not clear how many tournament this suspension will affect but Simon said he is “greatly concerned” of the risks all players will face if they were to play in China.

The 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled for Beijing, China on February 2. There is world pressure on companies to speak on defense of Peng Shuai and, at worst; the United States could boycott the Olympics.

According to the UN, Communist China continues to show disregard for human rights in many issues, including forced labor camps for minorities. It is believed that China as it was estimated that Chinese authorities may have detained up to 1.5 million people mostly groups of ethnic Muslims and Christians in internment camps.

The WTA (World Tennis Association) has shown a lot of balls in defense of this Chinese tennis star. So far no other sports league in the US has supported the WTA, who is picking principals over materialism, as they stand to lose a lot of money by this move.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Major League Baseball officially in lockout; First work stoppage since 1994

Major League Baseball Officially in Lockout

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

At 12:00 AM (midnight) Thursday, December 2, 2021, owners lockout players after both sides failed to come to a contract of a new CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). For the first time since 1994-1995 there is a Lockout in the game.

The best news is that this is happening early, with two-and-a half months before all 30 teams report to their respective training camps in Arizona and Florida. The 2022 season is scheduled to begin on March 31.

Without a new CBA, which is the negotiated accord that governs 99.9 % of the working relationships between MLB and MLBPA (players association), there is no baseball, there are no games, and transactions between teams are now frozen. During a lockout, free agency and trades of major league players are not allowed.

To make this clear: A strike is when the labor side (players and their union) puts a halt to operations, while a lockout is when management (owners) initiates the stoppage. In other words; a strike is when the players refuse to work while a lockout is when the owners refuse to permit the players to play. In this case, it is a lockout.

During the past three weeks, teams have spent close to $2 billion dollars in player signings. Max Scherzer, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Robbie Gray, Byron Buxton, Kevin Gausman, and Javy Baez are among some of the players that have gotten new contracts with new teams between $100 million to $325.

By looking at these signings we would think the business of baseball is doing great. Owners do not pay these contracts, because they are “nice guys”, as blunt as it sounds, owners do not go into the baseball business to be nice, but to make money.

Because many of them want to win and want to hire the best talent available they make these investments. The MLB revenues have increased from less than $5 billion in 2005 to more than $10 billion, during the last pre-pandemic season.

I cannot believe this lockout could go into the 2022 season, but if that happens nobody should be shocked. There is too much at stake here for the game. Aside from this two protagonists (owners and players), there are many others that work in the game of baseball around the 30 major league cities in the country.

They all want stability in their lives, anxiety is considered a disorder and it is not pretty. Teams also like to plan for sponsors, ticket sales, promotions, many peoples livelihood depends on the business of baseball and the majority are not players or owners.

There are many things that both sides are and will have to negotiate for the next CBA contract (usually a contract of this sort last for 5 years). Below are just a few of those:

-Pitch clock (yes, to ‘speed-up’ the game) -Creation of a “salary floor” -Salary arbitration for players after two years, not the three currently. A quicker path to free agency. -Universal Designated Hitter -Revenue sharing (in 2021 a modified, Loan-based revenue sharing was adopted) And many other issues that will not take a week or two to come to an agreement, or maybe it will? We can only go from the previous record of these type of negotiations and it is not a pretty sight.

“Baseball is like a poker game. Nobody wants to quit when he’s losing; nobody wants you to quit when you’re ahead.” -Jackie Robinson.

A’s Considering Free land offer from Howard Hughes Corporation in Las Vegas

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–The Hughes Corporation is willing to offer free land to the Oakland A’s if they chose to move to Las Vegas. The Howard Hughes Corp, own the A’s Triple-A affiliate, Las Vegas Aviators and their home, the Las Vegas ballpark. They have officially said that they will give the land to the A’s for free in Summerlin, (15 + minutes from the Strip) if the A’s want to build their $1 billion baseball park there.

David Kaval, President of the Oakland A’s who has made seven trips to Las Vegas since last May said the team would consider the potential land offer. “That is one consideration when we talk to different (owners) of the final sites is land cost, partnership on ancillary development, understanding all the aspects of the different locations logistically, making sure they work” and added “So those negotiations are going on with a couple (of) different groups to see what’s possible”.

On October 26, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted to keep the Howard Terminal Stadium plan alive in a 4 to 1 vote. However, if the A’s chose to take the offer of free land by the Howard Hughes Corporation in Las Vegas, then this would be an important change of plans.

For months now the A’s have been working on parallel plans to build a new ballpark, at Oakland or someplace else, with Las Vegas running in a race and tied with Oakland as the two cities. The Commissioner of Baseball is anxiously waiting where all this is going to end, but as he had said the current Oakland Coliseum is not an option for the A’s anymore.

LeBron gets the one game for elbowing Stewart in the face and Stewart gets two games for continuing to charge LeBron two times after being restrained and told to stop.

#2 The Golden State Warriors Klay Thompson was reported to be cleared to return to action from his cruciate ligament and Achilles injuries but Warrior head coach Steve Kerr said he didn’t hear anything about Thompson being cleared and Thompson’s return is scheduled for late December.

#3 Amaury, Associate coach Alvin Gentry is now interim head coach replacing former Sacramento Kings head coach Luke Walton. The Kings had lost seven of their last eight games before Walton was replaced. Gentry lost his first game as head coach against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night at the Golden One Center. The Kings have now lost eight of their last nine.

#4 The San Jose Sharks who came off three loses out of four game on the road returned to San Jose (9-8-1) on Monday night with a 2-1 win over the best team in the NHL the Carolina Hurricanes (14-2-1)

#5 Turning to baseball the Oakland A’s are moving forward in an offer to buy land for a new ballpark located in the same city as minor league team the Las Vegas Aviators in Summerland Nevada. The estimated price of the new ballpark is around $1 billion, the A’s who have tried to build at the Howard Terminal site in Oakland that project cost is around $12 billion.

#6 Busy day for the San Francisco Giants they signed pitcher Anthony DeSclafani for three years worth $36 million. DeSclafani went 13-7 with an ERA 3.17 in 2021. The Giants are reported in advance talks with Los Angeles Angels pitcher Alex Cobb 34, a right hander who went 8-3 with a 3.76 ERA. One more thing to unpack regarding Giants retired catcher Buster Posey he was named the 2021 National League comeback player of the year.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Mystery in the Tennis World Where is Peng Shuai?

Mystery in the Tennis World: Where is Peng Shuai?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Ms.Peng Shuai is 35, from China and one of the top professional tennis players in the world. She is ranked #1 in doubles in the world by the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association). This top women’s tennis association was founded in 1973 by Billy Jean King in London, England, with US headquarters in St.Petersburg, Florida.

Ms.Peng recently accused Mr.Zhang Gaoli, 75, a retired politician who served as the senior Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China from 2013 to 2018 and a member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, which is China’s highest ruling council.

According to Ms.Peng, Mr. Gaoli invited her to his home about 3 years ago and that she was raped. “That afternoon I didn’t consent at first” and added “I was crying the entire time”. Ms.Peng Shuai wrote a note on November 2 on Weibo (a Chinese social platform) and in this post she made the announcement to the public.

Since then she has not been seen in person. Last week there was a statement that it was released by the Chinese media and allegedly was written by Ms.Shuai. However, it looked contrived and many are concerned that she did not write it, but was produced from the government.

According to the New York Times, the tennis star disappeared from public view after she made the accusation. This weekend the editor of a Communist Party controlled newspaper posted a video clip that appeared to show Ms.Peng eating at a restaurant and later at a tennis event in Beijing. But the world has little confidence on what the Communist controlled media of China releases to the world. Steve Simon an official of the WTA said he remained skeptical that Ms.Peng was making decisions freely.

During the covid-19 pandemic, record shows that many doctors and virologist spoke about this virus in a way not beneficial to the government and were quickly silenced. Many disappeared and have not been seen since the beginning of the epidemic that according to most “in the known” began at the Wuhan Laboratories. China’s communist government has a long record of their treatment of people who threaten to undermine public confidence in the party’s senior leaders.

Even before this incident was revealed the United States was and still considering a move to boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing this next February for their dismal record in human rights violations. It is believed that Chinese authorities may have detained between 1.5 to 2 million people, mostly Uyghurs and other ethnic Muslims and Christians and have internment into secret camps of forced labor.

For Ms.Peng Shuai is just another incident that is “piling on” the Chinese government record and treatment of humans in all sectors of life. The United Nations lists China as one of the top world human rights violators.

When it comes to the media in China, it is understood that unlike here in the US, where you have all types of opinions and most are never censored by the government, in China, the media can be censored because they are directly under the rule and control of their government. In other world; what the Chinese media says, is basically the official word of the communist government of that country and Sports are also under the control of that government.

Thats Amaury’s News and Commentary: MLB Owners and Players headed to another work stoppage; Contract expires Dec 1st

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred (left) and Tony Clark MLB Players Association Executive Director (right) seen in file photo during the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Will both sides get a happy medium worked out before the CBA expires on Dec 1, 2021 before the owners lock out the players (file photo by Bleed Cubbie Blue)

MLB Owners and Players headed to another Work Stoppage

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Major League Baseball and the Players Union have to renegotiate a new CBA agreement. The current one expires December 1 and if by December 2 there is no agreement, it is expected the owners will lock out the players. So here we go again in the never ending saga of players and owners relationships like the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s, like Cats and Dogs, like Democrats and Republicans. This time key issues include arbitration rules, the luxury tax threshold, the minimum contract and a team salary floor. Negotiations seem to be headed in the wrong direction.

If there is no new agreement by this December 2nd, there will be a freeze on:

1-All transactions/trades

2-Above includes all free agent signings

3-Depending how long, potential cancellation of games and even the whole season.

4-No Winter Meetings in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, scheduled for this Dec 5-9.

What is the CBA: A collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is a written legal contract between an employer and a union representing the employees. The CBA is the result of an extensive negotiation process between the parties regarding topics such as wages, hours, and terms and conditions of employment. The CBA has covered a period of five years. The current agreement was ratified in December 2016, so they have to work on a new one.

The first CBA was from 1968 to 1969. This was the first Collective Bargaining Agreement in all professional sports. Marvin Miller (recently inducted into MLB Hall of Fame) was the pioneer heading the Players Association. It was not easy but Mr. Miller was a very skillful negotiator and understood the economy of the game, the structure, and that the players needed representation.MLB was the first professional league in the country with such arrangement between players and owners,

Before the first game of the 2021 World Series Commissioner Robert Manfred was in attendance and spoke about the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement)that is to be re-negotiated next month and could affect the 2022 season.

It’s hard to characterize progress,” Manfred said. “Progress is you go in the room, you’re having conversations, and people are continuing to talk. It doesn’t move in any measurable way that I’ve ever figured out, and I’ve done it a long time. The most important point is I know our clubs are 100 percent committed to the idea that they want an agreement by Dec. 1.

The last time baseball had a labor stoppage was the 1994-95 strike. That wiped out one-third of the season and the entire postseason (including the World Series) shortened the season to 144 games. It took a few years after that, apathy among fans when baseball started to come back in 1998. Do you remember the Mark McGwire vs. Sammy Sosa home run race? Yes, that was 1998.

That two-players brought back the interest for the Boys of Summer among the millions of aficionados that follow the game. Next came 2002, when the game came close to a strike, but a deal was reached August 30 and the full season was completed including the World Series. That 2002 World Series where the Angels beat the Giants in seven games.

To put all of this in simple language, the main issue here is about economic issues, plainly m o n e y. It is like any other business because although we call it a game, it is a big business in the billions of dollars. And of course, owners want more, players want more, some owners will like to limit the cost so they can increase their financial gains. There is a lot of money in this business, like many would say “it is a battle between millionaires vs. billionaires”, something most of us never have to worry about.

Labor problems are not the only issue facing the game, this is what Whitey Herzog the second-oldest Hall of Famer living together with Willie Mays (both 90 years young) recently said “The state of the game in baseball is about as bad as I’ve ever seen it,” Herzog began. “It’s all strikeouts and home runs and a high number of pitches.”

“And too many four-hour games, he said, especially during the postseason. “And then, the Commissioner (Rob Manfred), who’s never worn a jockstrap, has all these rules … and the way every manager is using his bullpen now … out of 54 outs every night, you’ve got about 22 strikeouts between the two teams and ten walks. So you’ve got 32 guys every night that doesn’t hit the baseball,” said Herzog

History: Lockouts, strikes, work stoppages in these seasons: 1972, 1973, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1985, 1990 and 1994. About: Pension dispute, salary cap, salary arbitration. Free agency, free agency compensation. We can rejoice that baseball has experienced 27 years of Peace, from 1994 to 2021. Can we keep this peace or are they headed to war again?

If no agreement is reached by December 2, 2021, M.L.B could enact a lockout to freeze transactions. Spring training is to begin in February, with the 2022 regular season scheduled to start on March 31. Nobody really knows what will happen, it could last until early February when all 30 teams report to Spring Training, that is just my take on this, there is way too much money involved to cancel the season “suicide”. Your opinion as a fan is as good as anybody’s.

Let’s hope for the best, but these things are unpredictable. May I be the first to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a Happy New Year.

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, the MLB Players Association and Major League Baseball are far apart in trying to avert a lock out the contract expires Dec 1st. It’s been 26 years since the last work stoppage back in 1994 which canceled almost half of that season.

#2 There are many issues on the table one big one is the Competitive Balance Tax which acts like a soft salary cap it’s one of the things the players in the past have been dead set against but could a salary cap be part of the baseball landscape in the quick future?

#3 Turning to pro football the Las Vegas Raiders (5-4) were absolutely crushed by the Kansas City Chiefs (6-4) on Sunday Night Football. Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes threw five touchdowns and the Raiders have now lost two straight games has the Henry Ruggs and Damon Arnette situations been a distraction for Las Vegas?

#4 Golden State Warriors (7-2) Stephen Curry has been mentioned as being on possibly the NBA All Time greatest players list amongst the top 20 or top ten. He’s been scoring off the chain in games lately around 40-50 points per game.

#5 The San Jose Sharks (7-6-1) have lost three of their last four games their last loss came against the Colorado Avalanche (6-5-1) 6-2 on Sunday in Denver. The Sharks were hit with a Covid 19 crisis putting seven of their players in quarantine including their head coach for two weeks while the Sharks had to call up minor league replacements to fill in. They play in Minnesota tonight against the Wild who have been winning and are 10-4. You got to see the team this month taking seven players away for Covid certainly changes the direction of any team chemistry.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Oakland A’s could have a Winter Sale

Matt Chapman (26) and Matt Olson (28) look to be seriously shopped by the Oakland A’s this off season as the A’s are expected to be putting a lot of free agents up on the trade block (file photo Athletics Nation)

Oakland A’s Could have a Winter Sale

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–Some of the best Oakland A’s players could be on the move this winter. Two of the team’s All Stars this year, first baseman Matt Olson and starting pitcher Chris Bassitt head the list; they both can become free agents next year. Matt Chapman, the best defensive third baseman in the American League won his third Gold Glove in 2021. Aside from Olson, Bassitt, and Chapman there are other A’s players that could be traded. Should not be any surprise, under the A’s system players do not stay too long. A good friend of mine and A’s fan for decades, tells me “Hollywood marriages are usually longer than A’s players in Oakland”.

–Matt Olson’s 2021 season was his best since he started his career with the A’s in 2016; he ended with a .271 average, 39 home runs (sixth best in the league) for the first time Olson drove over 100 runs, with 111 RBI. His 111 RBI tied No.5 in the league with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a contender for the MVP trophy. His batting average, home runs, and runs batted it was all personal highs for Olson. The most consistent slugger of the A’s could bring some very good prospects to Oakland. The New York Yankees (always looking for sluggers) have shown interest. Olson is the perfect fit as a left-handed hitter for Yankee Stadium.

–Matt Chapman recently won the 2021 Gold Glove (his third) he has now won the award in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Was going for his third Golden Glove last year but his season was shortened by injuries. His High School friend Nolan Arenado (both went to El Toro High School in Southern Orange County) has won nine (9) consecutive Gold Gloves at third-base, eighth with Colorado, and one with St Louis. Brooks Robinson (Baltimore) aka “The Vacuum Cleaner” won 16 Gold Gloves, the most for any position player in history.

–Chris Bassitt was 12-4 with a 3.15 era in 27 games he started but missed a month and a half after he got hit by a 100MPH line drive in Chicago in mid-August. His best season since he joined the A’s in 2014.

–Frankie Montas, had his best season as he ended with a 13-9 and 3.37 ERA in 32 starts and established himself as a “top of the rotation” arm. Back in 2019, he was up to his best start in the majors with 9-2 and 2.63 ERA in 16 games he started but was suspended 80 games at the end of June because testing positive for PED use. He missed the rest of the season and did not return until 2020.

–Sean Manaea. The lefty had a productive season in the rotation with 11-10 and 3.91era in 32 starts, most for him in a season, as well as innings, pitched with 179 1/3 and 194 strikeouts, all personal highs.

Starting pitching is a big commodity this off-season. Needless to say, position players with the talent of Olson and Chapman are also very attractive on an everyday lineup. However, not much is happening in the trading/free-agent market and that might be the case for a while, the way it looks now. Fast approaching is December 2.

That is a very important day because if there is no new CBA contract by then, it is widely known that owners will be locking out players and all transactions will be frozen. I will have more of the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) later this week.

“Baseball people, and that includes me, are slow to change and accept new ideas. I remember that it took years to persuade them to put numbers on uniforms.” -Branch Rickey.

Ray Fosse to be Inducted into the Oakland A’s Hall of Fame Way Overdue

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–I could have only wished the Oakland A’s would have inducted Ray Fosse into their Hall of Fame when he was alive. Today the Oakland A’s announced the popular catcher and broadcaster will be in the Hall of Fame.

The A’s Press Release today:

‘Two-time Major League All-Star catcher and Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Ray Fosse will be enshrined in Athletics history forever as a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame. Fosse joins four-time All-Star “Captain Sal” Bando, Gold Glovers Eric Chavez and Joe Rudi, Director of Player Development Keith Lieppman, and A’s Clubhouse Manager Steve Vucinich as members of the Class of 2022.’

Affable and always available to talk baseball Ray was one of those guys that I would always enjoyed picking his brain when it came to baseball knowledge. How to manage different pitchers during a game and all other aspects of the game we all love. A presence in the Press Box, I will always miss him. During the games at home we would talk about what happen in the previous game(s) or what to expect prior to the game at hand. I was privileged to have known him for years. He was strong of body and mind.

Ray Fosse was the catcher during the last two years of the A’s 1970’s dynasty, in 1973 and 1974. He caught some of the greatest luminaries in the history of the Oakland Athletics, guys like Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Vida Blue, Ken Holtzman, John “Blue Moon” Odom, and Rollie Fingers.

He always asked me about Latino players, their idiosyncrasies and superstitions, guys like Dagoberto Blanco (Campy) Campaneris, Manny Trillo, Gonzalo Márquez, who was a professional pinch hitter something that was seen as a key component of a team in the American League before the Designated Hitter rule was adopted in 1973.

Since I was a kid I was always fascinated by the work of a catcher. The only player that sees the whole field right in front of his eyes, and no wonder many catchers become managers. They’re basically acting managers, on the field. Ray Fosse was a real catcher. He played the position like it was intended to be played. Ray personified what a catcher is, strong, smart and in charge.

“A good catcher is the quarterback, the carburetor, the lead dog, the pulse taker, the traffic cop and sometimes a lot of unprintable things, but no team gets very far without one” -Miller Huggins.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Dodgers Urias Only to Win 20 games but not Nominated for the Cy Young Award

MLB: Only to Win 20 games but not Nominated for the Cy Young Award

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Young Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urías was the only pitcher in Major League Baseball among all 30 teams, this 2021 season to win 20 games; he ended with a record, 20-3, 2.96 ERA, started 32 games, pitched 185 2/3 innings, and struck out 195 hitters. However, the Mexican-born Urias was not among the three finalists for the coveted National League Cy Young Award. Is it because now victories are an antiquated way of judging a pitcher?

These were the three pitchers nominated for the Cy Young Award in the National League: Max Scherzer, who pitched for two teams this season, Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers, he finished with 15-4, 2.46 ERA, started 30 games, threw 179 1/3 innings, and struck out 236 batters.

In all fairness, he is a first-vote Hall of Famer. Philadelphia Phillies Zack Wheeler ended with a 14-10 record, 2.78 earned run average in 32 games he started, pitched 213 1/3 innings, and struck out 247. Corbin Burnes of the Milwaukee Brewers finished the season with an 11-5 record, 2.43 ERA, started 28 games, pitched 167 innings, and struck out 234.

As a broadcaster I do not have a vote. The people that vote are members of the BBWAA (Baseball Writers Association of America). I do have the utmost respect for them, some I have known and have been friends with for decades and worked with them.

To win 20 games during one season in today’s game is tantamount to winning 28 to 30 games years ago. Anybody that followed the postseason this year can see that one million pitchers were used, doesn’t matter if one is throwing a no-hitter after 5 innings, he is coming out for a reliever.

To be a starter doesn’t have the prestige it once had. But is not only the 20 wins, you cannot punish Urías because he pitched for a team that won over 100 games and was favorite to win the World Series again. I understand that a lot of the “logic” for this award goes to ‘innings pitched’ and in that case, Scherzer and Wheeler did pitch more innings than Julio Urías. It is (ironic and disingenuous) to give Innings Pitch that much weight when in today’s baseball starters do not work that much.

The beauty of baseball is that everybody has an opinion and a different point of view, (not to mention a bias for their team). I am not one that screams racism all the time, although I know, unfortunately, it still exists. And I do respect the votes by the baseball writers.

Maybe Julio can win 30 games next season and get the recognition he well deserves. The last 30 game-winner was Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers, who in 1968 won 31 and lost 6. Today, the description for a starting pitcher has changed.

The winner will be announced live on MLB Network on November 17 at 3 PM Pacific time.
