Baseball In Cuba: From Professional to Amateur – Not a Good Transformation

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Cuba once led Latin America and most countries in the world after the United States as far as the game of baseball is concerned. It was introduced in Cuba in 1864 by American students returning from the United States. History tells us that the first official game in Cuba happened some ten years later in the province of Matanzas at Estadio Palmar del Junco.

Palmar del Junco is considered the oldest active baseball stadium in the world. Since then, Cuba has been passionate about the game of ‘béisbol’ like few. As a young teenager, I remember when baseball changed forever in Cuba in the early 1960’s.

Palmar del Junco is a town in Matanzas on (Carretera Central de Cuba), Reparto Pueblo Nuevo. This is the town where baseball has its roots, on the largest island in the Caribbean. People played this great game with passion. Dagoberto Blanco Campaneris, aka Campy, was born here.

When I see Campy at A’s reunions, I remind him where he was born, and he smiles and is proud of his Cuban roots. He was one of the best shortstops in baseball, winning three consecutive World Series with the “Swing A’s”, Oakland A’s 1972-3-4. .

As a young teenager, I remember when baseball changed forever in Cuba in the early 1960’s. In the Cuban Winter League, major league players like Orestes Miñoso, Camilo Pascual, Pedro Ramos, Miguel Cuellar, Mike Fornieles, Luis Tiant and many others played in Cuba after they ended the regular season in the major leagues.

All that became history when the Cuban revolution and its government declared themselves a Marxist-Leninist system of government. For decades, Cuban players traveled freely from Cuba to the US.

But that all ended when Cuba’s government declared itself a Communist State, where the government-controlled “everything.” The freedom of free ownership and the means of production ended for everybody on the island, including Baseball, Cuba’s passionate pastime. Cuba’s longest-running dictatorship took over baseball and affected the game.

Suddenly, there was no more professional baseball; everybody that played in Cuba was an amateur because what the Cuban government paid their players was less than what major league players got per diem when they traveled on the road.

For decades now, under the Cuban system, the Cuban players that make it to the major leagues are defectors. This was not a good transformation because the people of Cuba were always involved with the Cuban Winter League and Major League Baseball, following their heroes in Cuba and the US year-round.

Yoenis Céspedes born in Cuba got his opportunity in 2012 with the Oakland A’s. He later signed a $100 million contract with the New York Mets.

Quote: “In Cuba I didn’t even have a bicycle” -Yoenis Céspedes.

This transformation in Cuba regarding baseball is one that I lived through as a young man and one that I will never forget because it represents the difference between Democracy and Tyrannical communism. American tourists who travel to Cuba and come back bragging about baseball on the island did not see this transformation because I was born and lived in Cuba, and no tourist who spends a week in Havana is going to tell me anything that I do not know about Cuban Baseball.

Born in Oakland, planning for Nashville

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

During a time when it seems people are talking about Oakland, Oakland, Oakland, for better or for worse, perhaps no other man currently represents Oakland better than Oakland A’s Hall of Fame pitcher Dave Stewart,

The Oakland A’s are not considered contenders. Still, the eyes of the baseball world are expressively focused on Oakland and this franchise’s trials and tribulations, especially during the 2024 baseball season, which is expected to be their last in Oakland. Dave Stewart is one man with a plan. His plan has been working for years to take an expansion team, minority-owned, to the city of Nashville.

He has been traveling in baseball circles, including the Winter Meetings, where baseball executives gather yearly to discuss trades and other organizational decisions. If you have not heard much about “Mister Smoke” talking about the A’s situation (unless he has to, as a baseball on-the-air commentator), he is not focused on such a thing. He is a proud Oaklander; everybody knows Stewart and his integrity for the game.

We will never forget during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, Dave Stewart by the old Cypress freeway where most of the damage was done in Oakland by the quake, including fatalities. I asked Stew after the Loma Prieta earthquake, “You should run for Mayor.” he laughed at the idea. Nashville is the first of two MLB candidates for expansion and is assumed to be a foregone conclusion.

Nashville will have to pay a $2 Billion expansion fee plus the price of a new stadium. The Capital of Tennessee, Nashville, has a population of 700,000, 300,000 plus more than Oakland, and 2 million in their metropolitan area, the Capital of Country Music.

Yes, Dave Stewart, born in Oakland, has been working on a real plan for Nashville.

The 38th Annual Santa Clara Hot Stove Banquet

By Amaury Pi-González

CAMPBELL CA–The 38th Annual Santa Clara Hot Stove Banquet occurred on Tuesday, January 9, at the Spacious Villa Ragusa in downtown Campbell. Since 1985, it has been a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. Their mission is a pure commitment to the baseball community of the Santa Clara Valley, the most populated area in the Bay Area.

To provide an opportunity for the baseball coaches and players to participate at the highest level and ensure recognition of their efforts. The awards recognized local Bay Area talent from many walks of life, including two champion Little League teams, but the common denominator for all is the great game of Baseball.

Their annual banquet (#38) is the event at which the committee recognizes and honors the accomplishments of deserving participants within our community. The funds from this banquet go directly to youth, high school, amateur, and collegiate baseball programs within the greater Santa Clara Valley. The approximately 500 attendees on Tuesday were significant league scouts, coaches, and professional baseball players at all levels.

Oakland A’s Baseball, Chris Townsend was master of ceremonies. The Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants had tables for this event. I spoke briefly with David Forst, General Manager of the A’s. I asked him the question most Bay Area baseball fans ask me: “Are the A’s going to play in Oakland in 2025? Since after this 2024 season begins in March, their lease on the Oakland Coliseum will expire, he responded, “I don’t know.”

It was a great night at the Villa Ragusa, where the memory of such great Bay Area baseball people was remembered at the top of the program. Ed Bressoud, MLB alumni and De Anza College, Head Coach/ NY and SF Giants, Red Sox, Mets, and Cardinals. Art Santo Domingo has been a member of the SF Giants and Oakland A’s organization for 26 combined years and was an MLB official scorer during both games of the A’s and Giants.

Tony Morici is a lifelong resident of San José, Bellarmine College Preparatory, and a University of Santa Clara graduate. Member of Silicon Valley Sports Hall of Fame and life-long backer of youth sports. They all passed in 2023.

Among this non-profit’s many benefactors and top brass were Mr.Cory (Obie) Obenour and Alex “Sandy” Wihtolf, President of Hot Stove SCV and MLB Alumni. Awards were given to High School students, community service, Umpires, Head Coaches, and Coach of the Year, plus many others, including college and minor league baseball players.

Lucas Erceg, pitcher of the Oakland A’s, was selected as MLB Player of the Year; he joined us later in our table. Nico Horner of the Cubs was born in Oakland and was named MLB Player of the Year. The Mark Marquess Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Mr. Ritch Price, De Anza CC, Cal Poly SLO, and KU Jayhawks baseball.

As I mentioned, after accepting the Media Award and thanking the SCV Hot Stove. “For me, it is always special to be in the same room with all these baseball people, from scouts and coaches to players and front office executives, because Baseball is a big family.”

I was incredibly humbled to be recognized by this incredible Bay Area organization.

Las Vegas Raiders made history this Thursday night as they beat the Los Angeles Chargers 63 to 21. This is a new franchise record in total points for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders.

Antonio Pierce, the Raiders head coach ( the HC role is general oversight, making calls on things like timeouts and challenges, and overall strategic adjustment) says he told the team that they should “press the gas pedal even harder” when they were up 42-0 in the second quarter.

The highest-ever scoring in one NFL game was on November 27, 1966, when the Washington Redskins scored 72 points and beat the New York Giants by a 72-41 score.

The Raiders made news, although their record the morning after was still a disappointing 6-8. Nonetheless, it was something to see.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Why Ontani could soon be with the Dodgers

Why Ohtani could soon be with the Dodgers

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

These are the three main reasons the two-way Japanese superstar could quickly sign with the Dodgers.

Why are the Dodgers the favorites to sign Shohei Ohtani? 1-He has repeatedly said he wants to stay on the West Coast. 2-He wants to be with a winner, and the Dodgers have won 10 divisional titles since 2013, three NL pennants, and a World Series, and they play here on the coast.

Three only a super-rich team can sign him, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are one of those teams, owned by the Guggenheim Baseball consortium. So, what is not to like for Ohtani?

It is well known by now that baseball sensation and free agent Shohei Ohtani is much more comfortable playing in southern California. He has played all of his six-year career at pitching-friendly Angel Stadium in Anaheim. If Angel Stadium is pitching-friendly, just 35 miles up Interstate Highway 5 there is a park that is even harder to hit a ball out, and that is Dodger Stadium.

The Los Angeles Dodgers makes all the sense in the world for the fantastic two-way player to set his new home beginning this next 2024 season. It is expected Ohtani could make a decision as early as Monday, the fourth of December.

On Monday, December 4, the Baseball Winter Meetings begin in Nashville, Tennessee. Shohei Ohtani is the biggest catch possible, and the Dodgers are one of the favorite teams to land the Japanese star with a salary that could reach $600 million.

The Dodger’s biggest and most historic rivals, the San Francisco Giants, have the money and the desire to land that box office attraction, especially since last season they struck out twice with two biggies, first Northern California native Aaron Judge, who stayed with the Yankees, and later with Carlos Correa who signed with the Twins. In both cases, the Giants went public and told their fans they were after these two superstars.

For Giants fans, It was like dangling a piece of candy in front of a 3-year-old and then pulling it back. Ohtani’s agent is Nez Balelo, one of the top agents in the baseball business, who Forbes also lists as one of the most potent agents in the world. Balelo is in the class of super-baseball agent Scott Boras.

Winter Meetings are scheduled from December 4-7. There is more than a 50% possibility that Shohei Ohtani will be signing his new contract, which will be, by far, the biggest in baseball history and one of the biggest in all sports. The 2-time MVP had successful elbow surgery last September; he is expected to hit in 2024 and return to the mound in 2025.

Quote: -“MVP with ease. He should win it every year. What he’s doing is insane. All of us at the highest level can’t believe our eyes. Truly remarkable. Be thankful you get to witness a real GOAT” – Chicago Cubs pitcher Marcus Stroman after Ohtani struck out ten players and hit two home runs in a win over the Chicago White Sox.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Oakland has been a Successful Sports town; Fisher sends Dear John letter to fans

The A’s have not determined where they’ll play for the 2025-27 seasons but it has been suggested they could play in Mexico City’s ballpark for the interim until their permanent home in Las Vegas is completed in 2028. (photo from CBS Sports)

Oakland has been a Successful Sports town

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–Today, the MLB owners unanimously approved Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas. One of the most popular used quotes in the world, not only in baseball but in every walk of life, engraved into our culture, is New York Yankee legend Yogi Berra’s famous, “It ain’t over ’till is over”.

With all respect to “Schools not Stadiums” the teacher’s Union in Nevada, who are still trying to derail the move, let’s face it… it is over. It did not surprise me that all MLB owners voted the same; the Yes vote for the Athletics to move to their fourth city in their storied franchise was expected. The A’s, from Philadelphia, with stops in Kansas City in 1954 and Oakland since 1968, are moving again in 2024.

However, Oakland’s professional sports history is still a very good one. Teams in Oakland won ten championships; the Oakland A’s won four World Series, the Golden State Warriors also won four NBA titles, and the Oakland Raiders won two Super Bowls. The only cities in the country with more combined championships in MLB/NBA/NFL are Los Angeles, Boston, and New York.

A’s owner, John Fisher, sent a letter today to Oakland A’s fans, thanking them for their support.

The Dear John letter’s first paragraph reads: I know that today is a challenging day with the vote by MLB owners allowing for the A’s relocation from Oakland to Las Vegas. I share many of those emotions – sadness that our team will be leaving its home since 1968, pride in what we have accomplished together on and off the field in Oakland, and hope and optimism about the future of the A’s in Las Vegas.

What else can I say that hasn’t been said yet? To be said, for like ten years now, we have heard all the opinions regarding the situation, and there are still other stories (I am sure) to be written.

Yes, it is sad for everybody here in Oakland and the A’s Bay Area fans, especially those who are very good A’s fans; it is terrible for the economy of Oakland, an economy in a situation today that many political commentators and experts in financial matters are comparing to the year 1979 with high gasoline and food prices, high living expenses, homeless all over the place.

By the way, two crazy wars are going on, and yes, the unemployment probably will get a little higher in Oaktown. A good friend of mine told me today, “BART is going to lose riders to the game and more money”, but it is more than BART. When a city loses a team, they’re losing a part of its identity, part of the fabric of the community, the total name recognition, and especially Oakland, as previously mentioned, has been a very prosperous city in Sports.

Except for one key, keeping them in Oakland. The A’s will play in Oakland in 2024, and my educated guess is that they might still work a deal with the City of Oakland to play in 2025, 2026, and maybe 2027 at the Coliseum until they inaugurate their stadium in Las Vegas.

However, that makes a lot of sense, and common sense is not abundant nowadays. So, who knows where the Athletics will play for the next four to five years since they built in Las Vegas. I even heard the suggestion of Mexico City.

Have a great weekend, and get ready for Thanksgiving!

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Wisconsin legislators approves over $500 million to keep the Brewers

American Family Field is seen Sept. 15, 2023, in Milwaukee. The Wisconsin state Assembly was set Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, to approve a Republican-authored plan to spend more than half-a-billion dollars to help cover repairs at the Milwaukee Brewers’ stadium. (AP News photo)

By Amaury Pi-González

Wisconsin State Assembly just approved a plan to keep the Milwaukee Brewers in Wisconsin until at least 2050 in exchange for spending nearly $550 million in state and local money to finance the team’s stadium. After legislators raised the prospect of the Brewers leaving Wisconsin is the state didn’t fund repairs at America Family Field.

Mark Attanasio, owner of the Milwaukee Brewers also chairs the Major League Baseball committee regarding the Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas. The Brewers needed the funds to repair the stadium in Milwaukee. Mr.Attanasio fortune is estimated to be $700 million.

The State of Milwaukee has a total population of 5.8 million people, Milwaukee is the largest city, although a small baseball market, it represents a lot of the economy and name recognition of this state in the world of sports.

Mr.Attanasio who chairs the MLB committee regarding the relocation of the A’s from Oakland to Las Vegas, recently said about the owners committee; “The committee, we are literally in the middle of our process, which therefore, I can’t comment,” Attanasio said. “Even if I were to comment, we’re still doing our work. In fact, we had a meeting a couple of days ago. We have another meeting scheduled this week, so we’re addressing it in a broad context and there’s a lot to address.”

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expects the vote by the owners regarding the approval of the A’s move to Las Vegas will take place this November. Three-quarters of the owners votes are needed for the A’s to move to Las Vegas.

#5 Amaury, how much do you think the fans and public at large have a say in the Oakland A’s relocation. There are people in Las Vegas who are not too happy about the way this deal went down to get the A’s with the use of the public money. Could the negative feedback of the fans possibly influence the owners at the relocation vote?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: To Call the A’s a “small market team” is a travesty

From left, lobbyists Alfredo Alonso and John Griffin, Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher, President Dave Kaval and lobbyist Jessica Ferrato inside the Legislature in Carson City on May 31, 2023. (Nevada Independent file photo)

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–For years now I have heard executives and even baseball so called “experts” call the Oakland Athletics a “small market team”. According to the Official US Census in 2020, the Bay Area has a population of over 7 million people in nine counties and 101 cities.

If that is a small market, then I must have been born yesterday on planet Mongo. Major League Baseball generate great part of their overall revenues via Television, that’s where the money is, forget radio. For the past several years, Nielsen has ranked the Bay Area market, the sixth largest TV market in the country. Actually throughout the 1980s and 1990s it had been the fifth largest.

Not everybody that attends A’s games live in Oakland, just like Giants fans are not only those that live in San Francisco. There is a reason we are the “Bay Area”. Leaving Oakland for Las Vegas is indeed leaving a 7 million people market to a market with a population of 640,000.

The Las Vegas media market is #40 in the US; the Oakland-Bay Area is #6. These are the facts. Yes, Las Vegas (according to the Las Vegas Statistics Bureau) is one of the most popular places to travel not only in the US, but in the world. And according to their statistics, the city has approximately 32 million visitors every year.

The Oakland Raiders have been successful as well as the last and current Stanley Cup Champions Las Vegas Golden Knights. In the NFL you play a 17 game season with about half played at home, in the NHL is an 82 game season with 41 games at home.

In MLB is a 162 game season with 81 home games. To sell most games during an 81 game season at home inside a 30,000 seat stadium, you have to sell out most of the time, to make it around 2 million in attendance.

The ‘powers to be’ in Las Vegas are counting with tourism to buy tickets for baseball, but that is a stretch. Good luck with that. However, I can see Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and other fans of big teams that travel well to see their teams for a three day weekend in Las Vegas, where most people go to watch shows and participate in gambling.

It is also a favorite spot for honeymooners. You can still get married at the Elvis Chapel and if it doesn’t that work, drive north to Reno and get a divorce. Finally, and of course, I wanted the Oakland A’s to stay in Oakland where they had won four World Series and were their roots really are.

But if they leave, as it looks today, even with all the thousands of people and reverse boycotts at different parks, including the two games coming this weekend at Oakland against the Giants, that is all nice and entertaining, but in the end I do not think Mr. Fisher is shaking and sweating when and if he seen those demonstrations, because he still owns the team and at the end, with all respect to the people demonstrating, in this country, under our free enterprise system, you cannot force a private citizen to sell if he/she doesn’t want to sell. It is as simple as that.

I have heard all scenarios by now on this debacle, and all I can go by is what is happening, we all live day to day. Some people are speaking like 2028 is just “around the corner”. 2028 is the projected year for when the Oakland A’s become the Las Vegas A’s.

Construction companies, baseball owners, lawmakers in City Halls in different cities and others maybe in the Stock Market as investors usually can plan for five years ahead, but most people I know they cannot tell you where they are going to be five years from today. Can you?
