NHL podcast with Matt Harrington: Sharks will not be part of NHL Global Series in Prague next season; Bolts just get by Sabres in Stockholm; plus more

#1 The San Jose Sharks, who have many European star players, will not be part of the 2020 NHL Global Series held in Prague next season. The Buffalo Sabres and Tampa Bay Lightning will meet in Stockholm tonight for the first of two games. In the early part of October at the start of the NHL season in 2020, it’ll be the Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators playing twice in Prague, while Colorado and Columbus face off later in the season at Hartwell Arena in Helinski.

#2 The Lighting and Sabres battled in Stockholm Friday to a Lightning 3-2 win. The Bolts’ Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy both scored. Both games in Stockholm between the two teams are sold out in Sweden as part of the NHL Global Series.

#3 The Edmonton Oilers came away with a 4-0 shutout at the Rogers Centre. The Oilers’ Mikko Koskinin stopped 26 shots in goal and Ale Chiasson scored and had an assist in a win that snapped their two-game losing streak against New Jersey on Friday night.

#4 The Detroit Red Wings, who had been struggling, shocked the Original Six Hockey World Friday night with a 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins. The Wings’ Robby Fabbri scored twice in his first game with the Red Wings. it was a win that snapped the Red Wings’ four-game losing streak. Most shockingly, they beat a very tough and challenging Bruins team.

#5 The Winnipeg Jets’ Kyle Connor found the back of the net and got an assist in the Jets win over visiting Vancouver 4-1. The Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 31 Canucks shots.

#1 The Vancouver Canucks, who face the San Jose Sharks tonight at SAP Center, had won five straight, but snapped their streak by a goal 2-1 to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. The Sharks, on the other hand, are a struggling bunch who have four straight, but are back on home ice. Matt tells us how he sees this matchup.

#2 Speaking of streaks, the New York Islanders topped the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Isles’ eighth straight win 5-3. The Isles got goals from Matthew Barzal (6), Ryan Pulock (2), Josh Baily (5), Anders Lee (5), Derrick Brassard (4).

#3 The Philadelphia Flyers got by the New Jersey Devils 4-3. The Flyers got scoring from Oskar Lindblom (7), Sean Couturier (3), Joel Farabee (11). Flyers won in a shootout.

#4 The Washington Caps won by a convincing five goals 6-1. The Caps scored four times in the first period against the Buffalo Sabres in a period that pretty much established the game. The Caps’ Jakub Vrana scored twice in the first period.

#5 The Carolina Hurricanes got four goals in the second period that pretty much put a lock on the Detroit Red Wings with a 7-3 win. In that second period, the Canes got goals from Sebastian Aho, who scored twice; Nino Niederreiter; and Martin Necas.

On the NHL Stanley Cup Playoff with Matt Harrington:

#1 The Columbus Blue Jackets are explosive. They have taken the first two games of the first round from the best regular season team the Tampa Bay Lightning. Can the CBJ’s repeat the same performance on the Bolt’s ice in game three?

#2 For the Jackets’ Matt Duchene had the hot hand with a goal and three assists and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 23 shots in the 5-1 win in Columbus.

#3 The New York Islanders’ Jordan Eberle and Josh Bailey scored a goal each in the third period against the Pittsburgh Penguins to take a 2-0 lead. The Isles goalie Robin Lehner stopped an amazing 32 shots.

#4 The St. Louis Blues have already jumped to a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference first round with another win over the Winnipeg Jets. The Blues’ Pat Maroon and Ryan O’Reilly scored big and goaltender Jordan Binnington stopped 26 shots in the 4-3 win. Jets have their backs to the wall.

#5 The San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer called a interference call a travesty and the reason for the loss of the game to the Vegas Golden Knights 5-3. Was it more the interference call or the ability of the Knights to be able to come back tie and add two more insurance goals to win and tie the series?

#1 The Toronto Maple Leafs took a 1-0 lead in the first round of the playoffs against the Boston Bruins 4-1. The Leafs’ Mitchell Marner scored in the first period, Marner in the second period scored a short handed goal, William Nylander added a goal at 18:25, and in the third period, neither team scored.

#2 The Washington Capitals’ Nicklas Backstrom scored twice against the Carolina Hurricanes in game one on Thursday night. Backstrom’s two goals were both scored in the first period, Alex Ovechkin scored a goal in the first period as the Caps would defeat the Canes 4-2 to take a 1-0 series lead.

#3  Tonight, the Columbus Blue Jackets take a 1-0 into game two against the Tampa Bay Lightning. How important is it for the CBJ’s to get a 1-0 jump on a team like the Lightning?

#4 The New York Islanders have a 1-0 series lead on Syd Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. How much of advantage is it for the Islanders to have home ice for game two and with Anders Lee, who led the Islanders in scoring this season.

#5 The San Jose Sharks host the Vegas Golden Knights for game two and hold a 1-0 series lead. The Sharks didn’t waste any time in game one, scoring a goal off the mouth of Joe Pavelski, and in the second period, the Sharks got goals from Brent Burns, Marc Edouard-Vlasic and Evander Kane for a 5-2 win in San Jose. How’s things looking going into game two tonight?

#1 Friday night’s NHL action: The Columbus Blue Jackets clinched for the postseason as they defeated the New York Rangers 3-2. Jackets netminder Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 25 of 27 shots and the Jackets. The Jackets’ Ryan Dzingle and Artemi Panarin had a coach goal each in the third period to put the CBJs over the top.

#2 In a game that was not even close, the Chicago Blackhawks poured it on the Dallas Stars 6-1. The Hawks’ Patrick Kane scored twice, Dominick Kahun, Chris Kunitz, Dylan Strome, and Slater Koekoek all scored a goal each for Chicago.

#3 The Anaheim Mighty Ducks got a mighty win over the Los Angeles Kings by three goals on Friday night 5-2. The Ducks’ Carter Rowney started things off with a goal in the first period, Korbinian Holzer and Daniel Sprong had a goal each in the second period, Sam Steel and Jakob Silfverberg scored one a piece in the third period for Anaheim.

#4 Saturday, the Tampa Bay Lighting (62-16-4) and the Boston Bruins (43-24-9) in the NHL Game of the Week. These two titans have been battlers all season long. The Bolts are the winningest team in the NHL and the B’s have been one of the top teams all season.

#5 The Vancouver Canucks are in St. Louis later Saturday night. Elias Pettersson likes to light the lamp. At 20 years old, he leads the Canucks with 65 assists and 27 goals for the Blues’ Ryan O’Reilly leads the team with 75 points and Vladimir Tarasenko leads St. Louis with 32 goals.

#1 The San Jose Sharks dropped their fourth straight game to the Los Angeles Kings 4-2 Thursday night and took another loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night in a one goal loss for their fifth straight loss. The Sharks also dropped five points behind first place the Calgary Flames in the Pacific Division.

#2 Meanwhile, the Flames got a four-goal win over the Ottawa Senators 5-1. For the Flames, Andrew Maniapane, Garnet Hathaway, Matthew Tkachuk all scored a goal.

#3 William Karlsson and Reilly Smith scored two goals each as the Vegas Knights shutout the Winnipeg Jets 5-0. Vegas goalie Malcom Subban stopped 20 shots.

#4 Tampa Bay (58-13) is a beast in Carolina in a three-goal win over the Canes. The Canes’ Ryan Callahan scored a tie-breaking goal in third period.

#5 Oilers get a three-goal win 4-1 over the CBJs. The Oilers’ Connor McDavid got a goal and an assist and Leon Draisaitl had three assists.

#2 The New York Islanders got a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens as the Isles’ Adam Pelech (5) and Anders Lee (25) scored for New York.

#3 The Washington Capitals’ Brett Connolly scored two goals–#18 and #19–to help lead the Caps in a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

#4 The Ottawa Senators got a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Blues. The Sens got goals from Christian Wolanin (4) and Chris Tierney (9). Jake Allen started in goal for the shutout for Senators.

#5 The red-hot Tampa Bay Lighting (54-13-4) defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. The Bolts’ Nikita Kucherov scored twice for #34 and #35 of the season.
