#1 The one game that stands out for the Cal Bears is the loss they took against the Washington Huskies getting walloped 87-52. That got Cal head coach Mark Fox to regroup and the Bears came out and won their next two games against some tough schools Utah and Colorado.

#2 The Stanford Cardinal got a huge win over the Colorado Buffaloes 72-64. The Cardinal are No.21 and got help from leading scorer Bryce Wills who played with a sore ankle and led with a key lay up and 19 points in the win on Sunday.

#3 San Francisco Giant catcher Buster Posey feels like he’s back into the swing of things and a good example of that is when he went yard after hitting a two run home run in the third inning of a spring training game on Sunday against San Diego. He’ll be crucial for the Giants line up.

#4 While sitting on the bench and waiting to get the okay to return to action Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry is hoping to get back in the line up for Golden State from his broken bone in his left hand.

#5 It was almost like a one on one contest when the New Orleans Pelicans Zion Williamson who finished with 35 points against the Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James with 34 in the Lakers win over the Pelicans 122-114 on Sunday.

Cardinal stun No. 21 Buffaloes in Pac-12 hoops 72-64

Stanford took a large step toward solidifying its chances of reaching the NCAA tournament with a 72-64 men’s basketball victory over No. 21 Colorado Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Cardinal (20-9 overall, 10-7 Pac-12), and Colorado’s first three-game losing streak of the season.

Bryce Wills led the Cardinal with 19 points on 9-of-13 field goal shooting. Oscar da Silva was next with 16 points, followed by Daejon Davis and Tyrell Terry with 12 points apiece.

Wills, da Silva and Spencer Jones each grabbed five rebounds. Davis had five assists and Jones had two blocks, three assists and three steals.

Colorado’s top scorer was Tyler Bey with 17 points, followed by D’Shawn Schwartz with 14. McKinley Wright IV added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Buffaloes (21-9 overall, 10-7 Pac-12), who held a 30-29 rebounding edge.

Aside from an early Colorado lead, Stanford led most of the game. A Wills basket with 8:13 to play. The Buffs responded by scoring 10 straight points on three hoops by Wright and two by Bey.

The Cardinal endured a four-minute scoring drought, ended on a short jumper by Wills. Colorado proceded to miss its next seven shots.

By beating Colorado, the Cardinal are assured of a winning conference record going into the final weekend of the regular season, and can still finish with a possible second-place tie.

The Cardinal travel to Oregon State on Thursday.

Stanford leads wire-to-wire to defeat Utah 70-62

Palo Alto- The Stanford Cardinal play hosted to the Utah Utes Wednesday at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal wanted to avenge the loss they suffered when they played Utah in Salt Lake City. Stanford came out firing. The built-up an eighteen-point lead. The young men from Utah finally got something going late in the first half and cut the deficit to twelve 34-22. The Utes gave the Cardinal a tussle in the second half. They outscored the Cardinal 40-36, and their defense gave the Cardinal fits. They put the clamps on Da Silva and Terry. Jaiden DeLaire came through in the last nine minutes of the game with nine points to help Stanford win.

The Cardinal, behind their star, Oscar Da Silva, raced out to an early 14-2 lead over the Utah Utes The Cardinal defense held the Utes to just 2 points in the first seven minutes of the game. The Cardinal increased the lead to eighteen 29-11. The Utes did not fold. They kept attacking the boards and were able to get back into the game. Stanford won the first half 34-22. Tyrell Terry connected on three threes for 9 points. Spencer Jones added six for the Cardinal. The leading scorers for Utah were Jaxon Brenchley with 7, and the big seven-foot center, Brenden Carlson, had 5.

The Utes came out firing to start the second half. They went on an 8-2 run the cut the deficit to six 36-30. Tyrell Terry connected on a couple of threes, and the Cardinal went up 48-37. The Utes came back, but the Cardinal refused to wilt. The Utes’ defense focused on stopping Tyrell Tyler and Oscar Da Silva. The strategy worked as Utah trailed by three 63-60 with 1:29 left. However, sophomore Jaiden DeLaire picked up the hit a  three to put the Cardinal in the driver’s seat. Terry was fouled twice in the last minute of the game, and he made all four free throws. Utah scored a basket late in the half, but it was not enough. The Cardinal wins 70-62.

Game Notes and Stats- With the win, Stanford is now 19-9 overall and 8-7 in the conference. The Cardinal has three games left to play this year. They meet Colorado at home on Sunday. They finish the season against Oregon State and Oregon next week. Utah falls to 15-13 overall and 6-10 in the Pac-12.

Freshman Tyrell Terry led Stanford with 27 points. He made seven threes in eleven tries. Oscar Da Silva finished with 20. Jaiden DeLaire had 11, Spencer Jones 6. Utah had four players in double figures. Timmy Allen led Utah wit 17. Both Gach had 15, Jaxon Brenchley 13, and Branden Carlson 12.

As mentioned above, Stanford plays Colorado, ranked 21st in the country, Sunday after at Maples Pavilion. The game will start at 3 pm and will be televised on ESPNU.

 

Cardinal sweep Washington schools, beat WSU 75-57

Stanford kept its hopes alive for a possible at-large bid for the NCAA tournament on Sunday with a 75-57 verdict over Washington State in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Pullman, Wash.

It was the Cardinal’s second straight win after losing seven of eight games over the last month going into the weekend. Stanford beat Washington 72-64 on Thursday.

Stanford has won eight consecutive games against WSU, and completed their second sweep of the Washington-based schools in three years.

Oscar da Silva and Daejon Davis scored 19 and 17 points, respectively, to lead the Cardinal (18-9 overall, 7-7 Pac-12). Da Silva was 6 of 10 from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds, giving him his sixth double-double of the season. Davis shot 6 of 12 from the field.

Washington State (14-14, 5-10) lost its fourth game in a row. CJ Elleby led the Cougars with 22 points and 10 rebounds. WSU has been without starting point guard Isaac Bonton in the last three games due to injury, and the offense has suffered – the Cougars have not taken a lead in the last two games.

The Cardinal led by as many as 14 points in the first half, eventually going on a 15-1 run to take a 31-19 lead at 3:10 of the half. WSU reeled off a 10-3 run – which started and ended with a 3-pointer by Elleby – to pull within 36-29 at the break.

Stanford opened the second half with a 9-1 run, building a 45-33 lead. The Cougars responded with an 8-0 run, and after Stanford went 5 ½ minutes without a field goal, WSU cut the Cardinal lead to 47-43 at 11:30 of the second half.

The Cardinal began pulling away, then went on a 10-0 run with 5:27 remaining to build a 65-48 lead.

The Cardinal return home this week for key games against Utah on Wednesday and Colorado on Sunday.

Stanford snapped out of a four-game losing streak on Thursday at Hec Ed Arena in Seattle, as the Cardinal knocked off Washington 72-64, earning a badly needed win in Pac-12 men’s basketball.

Stanford has lost seven of eight games over the last month.

Oscar da Silva led the Cardinal with 16 points and nine rebounds. Tyrell Terry was next with 14 points and four assists, and Spencer Jones added 12 points.

Washington (12-15 overall, 2-12 Pac-12) had four players reach double-figure scoring — Isaiah Stewart with 14 points and three assists, Marcus Tsohonis with 11 points, and RaeQuon Battle and Nahziah Carter with 10 points each. Carter grabbed nine rebounds and Jamal Bey had eight boards.

Defensively, Stanford (17-9 overall, 6-7 Pac-12) held the Huskies to 35.5 percent shooting (22 of 62, 4 of 24 3-point), and forced 12 turnovers.

The Cardinal shot 47.3 percent from the field (26 of 55, 7 of 18 3-point), and made 13 of 19 free throws.

After taking a 37-35 halftime lead using an 8-4 run, Washington took a lead early in the second half on a four-point play by Battle, but the Cardinal forced UW to miss 16 of its next 17 shots. Stanford held the Huskies to eight field goals — scoreless for nearly 14 minutes — in the second half.

The needed win should improve Stanford’s postseason resume. After traveling to Washington State on Sunday, the Cardinal return home for key games against Utah and Colorado.

Arizona continues Pac-12 mastery over Cardinal 69-60

Arizona, behind a 21-point, 11-rebound game from freshman center Zeke Nnaji, held off a second-half surge by Stanford and defeated the Cardinal 69-60 Saturday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

This was another tough loss for the Cardinal, who have been in a tailspin over the last few weeks, losing seven of their last eight games. It’s also the Wildcats’ 20th consecutive win over Stanford, a streak that goes back to 2008-09.

Josh Green contributed 15 points and six rebounds, and Dylan Smith added 11 points (2 of 7 3-pointers) and six boards for the visiting Wildcats (18-7 overall,8-4 Pac-12), who outrebounded Stanford 39-25 and picked up 10 points off 13 offensive boards.

Arizona, which moved into a three-way tie for first place in the conference, got only five points and two assists from point guard Nico Mannion, who played 24 minutes because of foul trouble. The Wildcats shot 37 percent overall, including 3 of 21 behind the arc. Arizona did hit 26 of 31 at the free throw line.

Bryce Willis led the Cardinal with a game-high 25 points, and Oscar da Silva added 15 points. Both Willis and da Silva grabbed five rebounds for Stanford (16-9 overall,5-7). It was da Silva’s first game back after suffering a head injury against Colorado on Feb. 8.

Arizona led 30-23 at halftime before the Cardinal cut their deficit to 46-42 with 10:28 left in the second half on a Wills layup. The Wildcats built a 59-50 lead with 5:30 to play on a Smith 3-pointer.

The Cardinal travel to Washington on Thursday.

Stanford’s late rally falls short lose to Arizona State 74-69

PALO ALTO–The Stanford Cardinal met the Arizona State Sun Devils Thursday night at Maples Pavilion. The visiting Sun Devils came to Stanford with a record of 15-8 overall, and 6-4 in the Conference. ASU is the only Pac-12 team to make the NCAAs the last two seasons. ASU has won five of the last six games. The Cardinal, on the other hand, has lost five of the last six and their record coming into the game was 16-7.

ASU led for most of the game. Stanford’s offense came to life late in the second half to close the gap to just three points. The Sun Devils held on to win 74-69.

The Cardinal’s best player, Oscar Da Silva, who suffered a head injury in the game against Colorado last Saturday, was not available. Stanford’s head coach Jerod Haase started sophomore Lukas Kisunas in his place. The Cardinal fell behind 7-0 in the early going.

Spencer Jones knocked down a couple of threes to make it 7-6. The Sun Devils, taking advantage of Stanford turnovers increased the lead to 20-13. James Keefe and Jaiden Delaire each made a bucket to make it 20-17. It was at this point that ASU went on an 11-0 run. The Cardinal fought back as Daejon Davis, Delaire, and Tyrell Terry made plays to cut the deficit to seven 36-29 at the end of the first half of play.

In the second half, ASU was able to keep the Cardinal at bay for most of the period. The Cardinal made an 8-1 run to come within four 50-46. The Cardinal’s point guard Tyrell Terry started to get his game coming as he led the charge. ASU didn’t cave.

ASU’s Remy Martin, and I am not making his name up, made two key baskets to give ASU an eleven-point lead 68-57.  The Cardinal’s James Keefe and Tyrell Terry led the team on another run to close the gap to three 68-65 with 2:07 left to play.

It appeared the referees missed a call when Terry was bumped and the ball went out of bounds. The Cardinal had another opportunity to get closer but they turned the ball over to ASU when the inbound pass was knocked out of bounds.

Remy Martin followed with a bucket to make it 70-65 with about 40 seconds left in the game. James Keefe scored for Stanford and was fouled on the play. Keefe missed the free throw. Rob Edwards made two free throws, and Martin made another two-point shot to put ASU ahead 74-67. Tyrell Terry scored the last basket for Stanford. Time ran out, and the Cardinal dropped its sixth game in the previous seven 74-69.

Game Notes and Stats- With the loss, Stanford’s record drops to 16-8 overall and 5-6 in the Pac-12. Arizona improves to 16-8 overall, and 7-4 in the conference.

Tyrell Terry led the Cardinal with 24 points. Jaiden Delaire had 11, Spencer Jones nine, James Keefe, nine, and Bryce Wills eight. Stanford shot 52% from the floor. They made six threes in 21 tries.

ASU was led by Remy Martin’s 24 points. Alonzo Verge had 19, and Kimani Lawrence kicked in with 11. The Sun Devils shot 55% from the floor. They connected on five threes. They out rebounded the Cardinal 30-21. Each team committed 20 turnovers.

The Cardinal plays the University of Arizona on Saturday at Maples Arena. The Wildcats played the Cal Bears Thursday night. The Sun Devils play the Bears on Saturday.
