Earthquakes late penalty kick seals 2-1 comeback win over Galaxy

SAN JOSE, Calif- Beat LA, Beat LA. That could be the new motto for the San Jose Earthquakes.

For the the second time in less than a week, the Quakes pulled off a dramatic come from behind victory over an MLS team from Los Angeles. This time it was the Los Angeles Galaxy’s turn to suffer the sting of defeat in a 2-1 loss on Saturday evening at Earthquakes Stadium in the third installment of the California Classico.

Andrés “Andy” Ríos cashed in a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to give the Quakes their first and only lead of the match. It was set up when Cristian Espinoza set in a cross over to Shea Salinas just inside the box. Rolf Feltscher tripped up Salinas on the ensuing play and referee Robert Sibiga awarded San Jose the eventual game winning shot. It was Ríos third goal of the season.

The win for San Jose has given them something they haven’t had during the regular season in 2020, a winning streak. For LA, they have lost four matches in a row and are currently on a five-match winless streak. San Jose has now climbed out of the basement of the Western Conference and sit only a point out of the 8th and final playoff spot with 17 points (Real Salt Lake has 18 points). The Galaxy are now dead last in the conference.

For the second match in a row, Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda stayed with the same starting lineup he had last Saturday against LAFC.

Also for the second time in a row, the Quakes conceded the first goal of the match early in the first half. It only took the Galaxy four minutes in to the first 45 minutes to get on the scoreboard.

Quakes killer, Cristian Pavón set up LA’s lone goal with a nice cross inside the box where Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez hit the right post with his shot attempt. The rebound squirted out to Sebastian Lletget, who one-timed the ball into an empty net for his sixth goal of the season. He has scored four of the last five Galaxy goals.

San Jose (4-6-5) had a great opportunity to even the game in 12th minute when Los Angeles conceded a penalty kick off a handball by Nicholas DePuy off a Chris Wondolowski pass attempt. After a video review the call stood on the pitch.

However, Wondo telegraphed his penalty kick attempt to the right that allowed Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham to make a diving one-handed save to deny the all-time career MLS goal scorer from getting number 164.

San Jose controlled played for the last 20 minutes of the first half. Headers from Wondo in the 26th minute and Florian Jungwith in the 32nd minute gave the Quakes momentum after the fast start by Los Angeles.

The Quakes scored the equalizer at the 42nd minute when a cross from Nick Lima sailed over from right to left on to the foot of Marcos López. The 20-year old left back made one touch before blasting a left footed strike past Bingham into the upper right corner of the net for his first career MLS goal.

“For me, it means a lot because I’ve wanted it for a long time. I find it in a good time professionally, I’m still growing as a player, but I’m glad for my goal and happy for the team. I thank God for the opportunity and also the team for giving it their all,” López said.

Things got chippy at the 58th minute when Lima and Joe Corona challenged for a ball near the sideline that resulted in Corona slapping Lima in the back of the head when both players were down on the ground. Emotions flared as Jackson Yueill confronted Corona by pushing him. Both Yueill and Corona received yellow cards for their actions.

“I wouldn’t count it to one moment exactly,” said Lima regarding the team’s first winning steak of the season. “I count to a couple days leading up to the game and not playing the role of the victim. We went down to LAFC knowing that it was going to be a tough game, but we went and played freely. We emphasized that, and we emphasized work rates, just kind of the simple things that you can control. We made that front and center, and that we have a goal. At the time we had to solidify something that we’re all achieving. I think getting into a playoff spot is what that is right now, and we go out there each game with that goal in the back of our minds. We’re trying to get that.”

San Jose’s backline did an impeccable job at keeping Los Angeles’ (4-7-3) big three of Pavón, Chicharito and Jonathan dos Santos off the scoresheet. Pavón was left frustrated on the final play of the match when his free kick from 20 yards out sailed high and wide of the net.

“Tonight, we felt joy. The players in these last two games have given a whole lot. They are believing more in themselves, and luckily after a long time we were able to train for one week straight. I think today we faced a very difficult opponent, the previous game as well, and we were able to be competitive and get the victory,” Almeyda said.

Quakes goalkeeper J.T. Marcinkowski didn’t record a save in his second straight victory. Bingham made four saves in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose three corner kicks. Los Angeles had four.

Yony González made his Galaxy debut. The 26 year old from Colombia came in as a substitute in the 72nd minute for Lletget.

Quakes forward Danny Hoesen underwent surgery to repair oblique and adductor muscle tears on Friday. The surgery, performed by Dr. William Brown, is expected to sideline the forward for the remainder of the 2020 regular season.

Hoesen, 29, has made 104 appearances (64 starts) for San Jose since joining the club in 2017, tallying 23 goals and 12 assists. Hoesen was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2018 and his 23 goals rank seventh all-time in Earthquakes history.

San Jose is now 5-2-2 against the Galaxy in its last nine matches. LA leads the overall series 32-25-16.

The Earthquakes are one of four teams in MLS, and one of just two teams in the Western Conference, to win each of their last two matches.

The Quakes held LA to just one shot on target.

Preakness Stakes 2020: Swiss Skydiver first filly to win a race since 2009

The only filly in the race, Swiss Skydiver, won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday afternoon, claiming her place in history as only the sixth female horse to do so, and the first in 11 years.

Swiss Skydiver beat all the boys in thrilling fashion, in a stretch duel with Kentucky Derby champion Authentic. The two-horse race was close, but the three-year-old filly held Authentic off and beat him by a nose.

She was the first filly, or young female horse less than four years of age, to win the race since Rachel Alexandria in 2009.

“Just a real honor to be around a horse like this,” Swiss Skydiver’s trainer Kenny McPeek said. “It’s a special moment.”

Swiss Skydiver’s jockey Robby Albarado said he “had an opportunity” when Authentic’s Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez abandoned the rail at the far turn.

“I took advantage of the rail. Johnny stayed off the fence there, made a conscious decision to move at that time. Give or take now,” Albarado said. “If I make that move now or I wait and get smothered.”

With odds of 11-1, Swiss Skydiver upset 3-2 favorite Authentic. Jesus’ Team at 40-1 took third place and Art Collector at 2-1 finished fourth.

Swiss Skydiver was the first filly to compete in the Preakness since 2014, when Ria Antonia came in last. Swiss Skydiver raced in Kentucky, New York, Florida, Louisiana, California and Arkansas this year, and was constantly hungry and eager to train.

“She never gets tired,” McPeek said.

McPeek won the Preakness for the first time and celebrated his second victory in a Triple Crown series after last winning the Belmont Stakes in 2002.

By defeating Authentic and Thousand Words, Swiss Skydiver denied their trainer Bob Baffert of a 17th Triple Crown race win and prevented him from setting a record with eight Preakness victories.

The spectator-less 145th running of the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, came just four weeks after the Kentucky Derby. For the first time, the 1 3/16th-mile-long race was the third leg of the Triple Crown, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The backwards schedule this year kicked off with the Belmont Stakes on June 20, followed by the Kentucky Derby on September 5.

Authentic upset Belmont Stakes champion Tiz the Law, who did not compete in the Preakness as he was not ready, according to Sackatoga Sable managing partner Jack Knowlton. The most recent Triple Crown winner was Justify, trained by Baffert, in 2018.

#1 Rich, the Raiders (2-1) will be hosting the Buffalo Bills on Sunday one of the toughest teams in the NFL at 3-0. The Bills have been noted for their offense and they’ve been in some close games but quarterback Josh Allen has been able to deliver.

#2 Allen threw four touchdown passes against a very challenging Los Angeles Rams team last Sunday in a narrow three point win 35-32 do you see him operating in the same fashion against the Raiders this Sunday?

#3 On the other hand the Raiders are coming off a tough 16 point loss to the New England Patriots 36-20. The Raider defense just got held back by a very talented Patriots offensive line and it gave Patriots quarterback Cam Newton lots of time to throw.

#4 For the Raiders quarterback Derek Carr he also had time to throw he threw for two touchdowns but the key quarter of last Sunday’s game was the third quarter as the Patriots defense shut the Raiders out.

Can the Athletics win their Fifth World Series?

Although they do not give MVP awards during the Wild Card series, there is no doubt Chris Bassitt will be the man to win it in my book. In a world where the baseball world seems to revolve around east coast teams, Bassitt is the best pitcher going in the business that nobody has ever heard of.

Playing without their main star third baseman Matt Chapman, who will not be back until next Spring, so far the A’s have gotten just enough offense to advance to the next round after eliminating a very dangerous offense in the Chicago White Sox, and the depth in their pitching continues to be the key.

Since they will not be back, because the rest of the postseason is on neutral sites, i.e. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles and Glove Life Field in Arlington, Texas, is they are fortunate enough to make it that far. The only time we will see them is when they return, as an eliminated team, or on a Victory parade in downtown Oakland. They will be on the bubble the rest of the 2020 journey.

The first of four World Series victories for the A’s was in 1972, the biggest picture was The Godfather, the Vietnam War was raging and there was a powerful earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua. Latino Legend Roberto Clemente lost his life that year as he chartered a DC-3 plane filled with help to the Nicaraguan people, when his plane disappeared.

The 1972 Oakland Athletics great victory over the Cincinnati Reds in that World Series brought the Bay Area its first title among all the main professional teams. The A’s were the first of three different teams to win consecutive World Series. With this run, the A’s also became the only other Major League franchise besides the Yankees to win at least three straight World Series titles.

With another World Series title the Oakland Athletics will tie the most by a Bay Area professional team. Five (5) Superbowls’ by the San Francisco 49ers. Warriors have won (4) NBA titles, Raiders three (3) Superbowl’s, San Francisco Giants three (3) World Series and San José Earthquake two (2) MLS titles. San José Sharks have not won a Stanley Cup. Note: San José Sharks have been in existence for 29 years and the San José Earthquakes for 21 years.

Beginning next Monday, when the Athletics face the Houston Astros in the best of five (5) ALDS, Bob Melvin’s club will have to navigate a Monday through Friday playoff series with no days off.

So far the team offense is not really clicking in all cylinders and the depth in their pitching could be what keeps carrying this team all the way to the World Series, where, it seems the guys waiting there for them will be the Los Angeles Dodgers, this time in Texas. Of course nothing like the last time these two teams met in 1988. And if that happens, the A’s dream is to win their Fifth World Series.

This is 2020. The Miami Marlins are still playing; they just eliminated the Chicago Cubs in the wild-card series. Founded in 1993, the Miami Marlins have never won a division, yet they have won seven (7) consecutive playoffs series since they were born and most importantly they have won two (2) World Series.

At this point in the playoffs, the Marlins are the biggest story. Their odds to win this year’s World Series were among the longest shots.

#1 After ten players and personnel combined on the Tennessee Titans had tested positive for Covid-19. The Minnesota Vikings had to take tests after playing the Titans last Sunday. The Vikings tests came up negative and have returned to practice. The Titans will resume practice on Saturday and were scheduled to play the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday but the NFL will reschedule the game for later in the season .

#2 London, given the recent Titans outbreak does that give concern, alarm that playing a contact game like football is still a high risk situation and asks the question why continue when you have an outbreak like this?

#3 The Los Angeles Lakers trounced the Miami Heat on Wednesday night in game 1 of the NBA Finals, 116-98. The Lakers Anthony Davis led with 34 points and Lebron James followed with 25. With Davis and LeBron the Lakers have been a force in post season.

#4 The Buffalo Bills (3-0) have been playing phenomenal football they’re headed to Las Vegas to play the Las Vegas Raiders (2-1) for week 4. The Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw against a mighty Los Angeles Rams defense last Sunday going 24-33 for 311 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. How do you see this match up this Sunday afternoon?

#5 London turning to the MLB postseason the Oakland A’s who not only won the AL West and won a playoff series and are headed to the Division Series in Los Angeles against the Houston Astros. The A’s pitching had been key in getting them to the post season getting great pitching support from starters Chris Bassitt 5-2 (ERA 2.29) and Sean Manaea 4-3 (ERA 4.50).

#1 David talk a little about the job performance of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens last Sun Sep 27th at the Meadowlands against the New York Giants. Mullens threw 25-36 for 343 yards and one touchdown.

#2 The 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon, wide out Brandon Aiyuk, and running back Jeff Wilson Jr. all had a touchdown each and Wilson Jr had two touchdowns that provided key for the offense against the Giants.

#3 The visiting Philadelphia Eagles (0-2-1) are headed to Levi Stadium this Sunday. Their coming off a 23-23 tie from last Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals (0-2-1). Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was 29-47 for 225 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

RedBox Bowl cancelled for 2020

A San Francisco tradition will not be played this December at Levis Stadium, and it is unclear if it will return.

The RedBox Bowl that moved to Levis Stadium when the stadium opened in 2014 from AT&T Park was cancelled back in August due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

While its unfortunate that we are unable to stage the 19th iteration of the Bay Areas Bowl game this December, I’m confident that the Bowl property, along with the entire live sports, events and tourism industry, will be in a healthier position next year, and we cant wait to welcome new college football teams and fans back to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2021, said RedBox Bowl executive director Ryan Oppelt in a statement.

The RedBox Bowl made its debut in 2002 as the San Francisco Bowl at what was known as Pacific Bell Park in a game that pitted the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Air Force Falcons.

Just one year later, the San Francisco Bowl was the last event at Pacific Bell Park before the name change to SBC Park.

Not only did the name of the ballpark change, but the name of the bowl changed as well, as the name of the game became the Emerald Bowl and that was the name until it became the Fight Hunger Bowl when the Nevada Wolfpack defeated the Boston College Eagles 20-13, as the Wolfpack were led to victory by a senior quarterback named Colin Kaepernick.

After the game moved to Levis Stadium beginning with the 2014 edition, the name of the game changed to the Foster Farms Bowl and that would be the name of the game until 2018 when it became the RedBox Bowl.

When the game moved to Levis Stadium, it also became a matchup between two of the elite conferences in the country, as the game matched teams from the Big Ten and the Pacific 12 Conferences.

The California Golden Bears defeated the Illinois Fighting Illini 35-20 before 34,177 in the 18th edition of the game.

Baseball Gods smile on A’s beat White Sox 6-4 to advance ALDS

Oakland- The baseball gods finally smiled on the Oakland Athletics on Thursday. The A’s came from behind to beat the White Sox 6-4. The A’s had lost nine consecutive winner-take-all series.

The last time they won a winner-take-all series was in 1973 when they defeated the New York Mets in game seven. Oakland advances to the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros. The A’s were 7-3 against the Astros this year. The series will be played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The A’s sent the veteran righty, Mike Fiers, to the hill to face the Chisox. The Sox countered with rookie Dave Dunning. Fiers had never started a game in the playoffs in his ten-year career. Dunning was making his eighth start in big league career.

Both managers planned to go to the bullpen at the first sign of trouble. Sox manager, Rick Renteria, made a couple of lineup changes. Eloy Jimenez was penciled in to be the DH. Jimenez did not play in the first two games due to an ankle injury. Nomar Mazara started in right, and Adam Engel was moved to left. A’s manager Bob Melvin started Jake Lamb at third, and Randy Grossman was in left. Mark Canha moved over to right.

The White Sox drew first blood in the top of the second. Sox rookie Luis Robert blasted a 487-foot monster shot to give the Sox an early 1-0 lead. Fiers struck out the next two batters. He got into a jam when he gave up a single to Nick Madrigal, a double to Tim Anderson, and a walk to Yasmani Grandal to load the bases.

Melvin brought in Yusmeiro Petit to face Jose Abreu. Petit did the job as he got Abreu to ground out to end the threat.

The White Sox put two more on the board in the third. Jimenez doubled to start the rally. Jimenez aggravated his injury, sliding into second and had to leave the game. James McCann replaced him. Luis Robert singled to drive in McCann.

Robert advanced to second on the throw home. Mazara doubled to drive in Robert to put the Sox ahead 3-0. Oakland loaded the bases with one out in their half of the third but failed to score.

Things began to change for Oakland in the fourth. With two out and a man on first, A’s rookie catcher, Sean Murphy, homered to make it a 3-2 game. The A’s plated two more in the inning. Tommy La Stella walked to continue the rally. He went to third on Marcus Semien’s double.

The Sox gave Chad Pinder an intentional walk to load the bases. Renteria brought in rookie Matt Foster to pitch to Mark Canha. The rookie was wild. He walked Canha to bring in La Stella with the A’s third run. He then walked Matt Olson to force in Semien with the fourth run. Oakland is now ahead 4-3.

The Sox tied the game in the fifth. Sox third baseman, Yoan Moncada, singled and then stole second. Moncada scored on Mazara’s single. La Stella made the game’s defensive play when he made a fantastic juggling catch to rob Adam Engel of a hit.

Oakland regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. The A’s loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit. Evan Marshall was now pitching for Chicago. Marshall walked the leadoff hitter, Sean Murphy.

La Stella reached when Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal was called for catcher’s interference. The official scorer charged Grandal with an error. Marshall walked Semien to load the bases. The next hitter, Chad Pinder, who was 2-for-35 with the based loaded, singled to drive in Murphy and La Stella to put the A’ up 6-4.

Neither team would score again. The Sox, however, had chances in the seventh and eighth innings to either tie or take the lead. In the seventh, they loaded the base without a hit. The A’s had Lou Trivino on the mound.

With one out, Jose Abreu started the inning a ground ball to shortstop Marcus Semien. Semien’s throw to first pulled Matt Olson off the bag. Semien was charged with an error. Trivino hit McCann with a pitch. Trivino retired the next two hitters. Melvin brought in lefty Jake Diekman to pitch. Diekman walked Mazara to load the bases. The threat ended when Engel grounded out.

In the eighth, With one out, Chicago shortstop, Tim Anderson singled. Joakim Soria walked Grandal to put two on at first and second with Jose Abreu coming to bat. Soria got Abreu to ground into an inning double play.

The A’s brought in Liam Hendriks to close out the game. Hendriks did not fare well on Wednesday as he threw 49 pitches. A’s manager Bob Melvin said that Hendriks would be available to pitch Thursday. Sox DH James McCann singled to start the ninth. Hendriks showed the White Sox why he was the best closer in baseball. He struck out the next three hitters to preserve the win for Oakland. The A’s win 6-4 and advance to the ALDS.

Game Notes- The time of the game was four hours and ten minutes. The White Sox used nine pitchers. The A’s used eight. The 17 pitchers used set a record for most pitchers in a regular nine-inning game.

Luis Robert was the youngest player to hit a home run in a playoff game since Mickey Mantle did it in 1952.

The White Sox are done for the year. They will be back. The A’s are still playing.

The A’s are advancing in the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

#1 Jerry like you said in your column yesterday game 2 of the Wild Card Series was a nail biter with the A’s leading 5-0 in the top of the eighth inning the Chicago White Sox started making noise.

#2 Jerry up to the eighth inning A’s starter Chris Bassitt had the Sox on the ropes with a 5-0 shutout until the Sox Tim Anderson led off the inning with a single and Bassitt was lifted for reliver Liam Hendriks. Hendriks pitching to the Sox Yasmani Grandal who turned on it for a two run homer getting the Sox on the scoreboard now down by three 5-2.

#3 Jerry talk about that ninth inning with the bases juiced and A’s reliever Jake Diekman pitching and he walked in a runner to make it 5-3 and the A’s season on the line.

#4 Jerry talk about the dangers of facing a hitter like the White Sox Jose Abreau who has 60 RBIs in 60 games, with 19 homers and had a home run in game 1 of Tuesday’s series.

#5 Talk about today’s game 3 starting pitchers A’s manager Bob Melvin Mike Fiers (0-0) and the White Sox manager Rick Renteria will go with Dane Dunning (0-0).
