Nets pummel Warriors 129-88; Burks and Robinson traded to 76ers

The Golden State Warriors finished their five-game 10-day road trip with a visit to the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn. The Warriors had won their last two games against Cleveland and Washington and a win over Brooklyn would allow them to return home with a 3-2 record. The Nets, playoff contenders, are the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 22-27.

The Nets’ star Kyrie Irving was not available to play Wednesday night. The Warriors dressed nine players as they kept Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson out of the lineup. Rumors have been swirling that the Warriors are looking to trade D’Angelo Russell, Alec Burks, and Robinson.

All three players have been able to put points on the board. The Warriors are up against a hard salary cap that prevents them from going after players that command a higher paycheck. The trade deadline is at 12 noon Pacific Time on Thursday.

As for the game, the Warriors, probably out of gas at the end of a long road trip, could not make baskets. The Warriors couldn’t handle the Nets onslaught. The Nets led 40-25

The Warriors lost the second period by six points. The Nets outscored the W’s 28-22, and the Warriors were just about finished. The score at the end of the first half was 68-47 in favor of Brooklyn. The Warriors were 2 for 22 from behind the three-point arc.

D’Angelo Russell paced the team with 15. Eric Paschall was second with nine. The W’s shot 34% from the floor. The Nets, on the other hand, were 49%from the floor and they made nine threes.

The Nets poured it on in the third quarter. The Warriors managed to score just 17 points while Brooklyn tallied 27. The Nets had the game in pocket leading 95-64 after the first 36 minutes of play.

Brooklyn used most of the reserves for the fourth quarter. It didn’t matter. The Warriors did not have the firepower to catch the Nets. The Warriors lost the game by a staggering 41 points 129-88.

Game Notes and Stats- With the loss, the W’s drop to 12-40. The Nets improved to 23-27.

The leading scorers for Golden State were D’Angelo Russell with 17. He knocked down just 2 points in the second half. Russell attempted 8 threes and did not make a single one. Eric Paschall had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and he made two threes in five tries.

Jordan Poole had 16, Kevon Looney 11 in just 17 minutes of playing time. Marquese Chriss added 8. The Warriors shot 36.5% from the floor. They made 5 threes in 39 tries. The Nets controlled the boards on both ends of the court as they outrebounded the W’s 65-34.

After the game, many of the Warriors were seen giving hugs to their former teammate Kevin Durant. KD and Steph Curry gave each other a big hug and were all smiles after the game.

Another former Warrior was in the news Wednesday night. Andre Iguodala, whom the W’s traded to Memphis, was traded to the Miami Heat. Iguodala refused to join the Grizzlies as they are a young team, and he wanted to go to a contender. The Heat filled the bill, and Iguodala signed a two-year extension for $30 million.

The W’s return home to face the Los Angeles Lakers Saturday evening at the Chase Center. The Warriors are planning a ceremony to honor the life of Kobe Bryant and the eight other people that died in the helicopter crash last month. The game will start at 5:30 pm.

 

Gulls hang on to send Barracuda to fifth straight loss in 4-2 win

SAN JOSE, Calif- A game that was exciting from start to finish ended with the San Diego Gulls defeating the San Jose Barracuda 4-2 on Wednesday evening at SAP Center.

On a night where San Jose dressed only 11 forwards, the Barracuda lost its fifth game in a row. The Gulls extended its five-game point streak and are now 4-3 against San Jose this season.

San Diego (20-16-4-2) drew first blood early in the first period. Chris Wideman sent in a shot on goal from the right faceoff circle that deflected off the pad off ‘Cuda goalie Andrew Shortridge and veteran forward Chris Mueller cleaned up the rebound beating Shortridge top-shelf for his 14th goal of the season at the 5:49 mark. Antoine Morand picked up the secondary assist.

San Jose (14-24-1-2) evened the score just over two minutes later. Noah Gregor won a race to the puck along the boards behind the net. Gregor fed a backhand pass out to a wide-open Ivan Chekhovich who made a deke around Gulls goalie Anthony Stolarz and tucked home the puck for just his third goal of the season at the 7:55 mark. Chekhovic snapped a 12-game goal-less draught. Nick Meloche received the secondary assist.

“Right now I’m playing on (one of ) the top two lines. I got an opportunity (to be more of an offensive threat) and it’s really nice,” said Chekhovich.

San Diego outshot San Jose 19-14 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Gulls regained the lead at the 9:00 minute mark of the second period. Blake Pietila had the puck along the right boards when he sent over a cross ice pass to Simon Benoit at the left slot. Benoit skated in and wired a wrist shot past Shortridge on the short side for his third goal of the season. It snapped a 28-game goal-less draught for the Laval, Quebec native.

One of the key moments of the game came in the middle frame when Stolarz stopped Chekhovich on a breakaway to preserve their 2-1 lead.

“I thought we made it a point to make sure we got to those (hard) areas and making it a game. I don’t want to say an ugly game but maybe a game they’re not as interested in playing,” said assistant coach John McCarthy.

San Diego scored an insurance goal early in the third period. A shot from the left point was redirected by Brendan Guhle that ricochet off Nick DeSimone’s stick into the back of the net. The unassisted goal was Guhle’s fourth goal of the season that came at the 5:24 mark.

San Jose scored a 4-on-4 goal late in the third period. Chekhovich fished out a puck from a scramble in front of it. He then fed it over to Joachim Blichfeld who buried the puck into an empty net for 14th goal of the season at the at the 14:13 mark. Meloche finished with a two-point game with his second assist on the evening.

“Obviously I have more minutes on the ice so it gives me more confidence (offensively). I just need to move my feet and that’s where I (am able to) create offense,” said Meloche.

Chekhovich played like a man possessed and was arguably the ‘Cuda’s best player of the game. He had numerous scoring chances while creating chances for his teammates.

I liked his game a lot,” said McCarthy regarding Chekhovich. “We talked to him kind of exactly what we’ve talked to the whole team. Not playing on the perimeter and stepping inside on faceoffs. To his credit, he’s been carrying it over into his game and it’s leading to the offensive chances he’s been generating for himself and his linemates.”

Things got chippy with just over nine minutes remaining when a big scrum ensued behind the net after Lukas Radil was called for boarding. Jeremy Roy and Max Comtois exchanged fisticuffs during the skirmish.

Alex Dostie scored an empty net goal, his 10th of the season, with 46 seconds left in the game to seal the deal for San Diego.

Stolarz finished the night making 36 saves on 38 shots in earning his 16th win of the season. Shortridge stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced in the tough luck loss.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-1 on the power play. San Diego went 0-for-5.

Lean Bergmann returned to the lineup for the first time since 12/31/19 when he suffered a lower body. The German forward missed 12 games during his absence.

‘Cuda forwards Alex True and Maxim Letunov were called up to the parent club Sharks and both made their NHL debuts yesterday evening in a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

In a corresponding move, San Jose recalled Tristan Langan from Orlando of the ECHL. It is first call up to the AHL in Langan’s career.

Last Tuesday, the San Jose City Council unanimously approved a 200,000 square-foot expansion of Solar4America Ice at San Jose. The expansion will add two additional recreation rinks to the facility, increasing the building’s total to rinks to six. The expansion will also make the ice center the largest ice facility under one roof west of the Mississippi River. One of the rinks will be located inside a 4,200 seat, two story spectator arena which will serve as the new home for the Barracuda. Construction for the facility is slated to begin in April 2020, with a targeted completion date of April 2022.

The announced attendance was 2,072.

Robinson and Burks pulled from game sets a sad tone in Warriors 129-88 loss

BROOKLYN–The Golden State Warriors were dismayed to find out just before facing the Brooklyn Nets that veterans Glen Robinson III and Alec Burks would likely be traded, and that news set the tone for their 129-88 loss at Barclays Center on Wednesday night.

“It was a tough night to go out and play,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “Two of our leaders, elder statesmen, guys who are really beloved in the locker room–for the guys to find out that those two guys are most likely going to be traded was pretty tough.”

D’Angelo Russell, who received a warm welcome back from fans of his former team, scored the first points for Golden State with a floating shot. But the Nets went on a 13-0 run and took a 15-2 lead just four minutes into the first quarter, forcing Kerr to call a timeout.

“There’s not a really good way to prepare for a game when something like that happens, and I think it showed,” Kerr said, referring to Robinson and Burks.

The timeout did not help the Warriors, who were without stars Stephen Curry (left hand fracture) and Klay Thompson (left ACL rehabilitation). At the half, the Nets lead 68-47. Golden State never lead, but trailed by as many as 44 points, at the end of the game.

Two Golden State rookies admitted that Robinson and Burks sitting out impacted their game, but that it was not an excuse for the blowout.

“Today was a rough one just because everyone was mentally out of it, but it’s our job,” Warriors forward Eric Parschall said. “We know it’s a business.”

Warriors guard Jordan Poole said the team “didn’t come out how we wanted to.”

“The Nets are a really good team, but I don’t think I could blame anything for the performance,” Poole said. “Obviously, it was tough news that nobody wanted to hear, but you still have to go out there and you still have to play.”

Golden State was 5 for 39 (13%) from the three-point line, and their record has worsened to 12-40. Meanwhile, the Nets’ 41-point win was their biggest margin of victory since defeating the Denver Nuggets by 44 points in 2009.

For many Warriors fans, the highlight was probably after the game, when Curry hugged former teammate Kevin Durant, who also sat out for rehabilitation of his right Achilles.

While the Warriors can look forward to heading back to the Bay after their five-game road trip, it isn’t going to get any easier for them at home. They are facing LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.

OAKLAND–The Houston Astros will be picked favorite to repeat and win the American League West for the fourth consecutive year. The Oakland A’s have finished in second place during the past two seasons when they ended with identical 97-65 record.

The best one-two pitchers in the American League last season were Justin Verlander who won 21 games and the Cy Young Award and Gerrit Cole who won 20 games. However,Cole, the top free agent in the market left for the New York Yankees who signed him to a $324 million contract, the fourth largest deal in MLB history.

To the Athletics advantage,they will not have to face Cole that many times,since he is now in the AL East. That by itself could be worth three to four games in the standings. The Astros will be lingering from the biggest scandal in baseball the sign-stealing scandal,which cost the jobs of their field Manager and General Manager.

The Astros will be busy fielding all kinds of questions beginning next week when they open their Spring Training in West Palm Beach,Florida. That would be the busiest Spring Training in baseball this year,since the Astros share that same facility with the World Champions Washington Nationals.

The A’s pitchers and catchers will land next week in Mesa,Arizona and their young pitching staff is definitely Armed and Dangerous.Their main starters are here by age, youngest to oldest: Jesús Luzardo,  Frankie Montas(22)  A.J Puk (24) Sean Manaea(27) and Mike Fiers(34).

This is indeed a formidable bunch of pitchers; Luzardo,Montas and Puk all power pitchers with fastball scratching the 100 mph on the radar. Either Mike Fiers or Sean Manaea (one of the two) most likely will be announced by A’s manager Bob Melvin as the Opening Day pitcher, for Thursday afternoon the 26 of March at the Oakland Coliseum.During this first homestand for the Athletics, the Houston Astros will follow the Twins to Oakland, presenting a delightful early season match-up between the A’s and the Dusty Baker Houston Astros.

This Athletics rotation will the potential to match and even better the Houston Astros,the team they will probably have to beat,to win their division. Not to forget the Rangers and Angels both much improved during this off-season,but there is little doubt who the A’s will have to beat, to forget “about a One-Game wild card playoff, and try to win the division affording them a better chance to go deep into the postseason.”

These pitchers will have the support of one of the youngest and most talented teams in the game. The A’S in 2019, were one of the best hitting teams in baseball. Among all MLB teams, A’s ranked #5 in Home Runs with 257, #9 in Runs Batted In with 800. Their pitching staff had the 6th best Earned Run Average with 3.97.

Bob Melvin’s young ball-club will also have excellent defensive support for that young and powerful pitching staff. Among all 30 clubs in MLB the Athletics finished #4 in fielding with a .986 percentage. Only St Louis,Kansas City and Houston had better defensive numbers than the A’s.

A’s won Gold Gloves at first base with Matt Olson and third base with Matt Chapman,with a most improved Marcus Semien at shortstop who comes out of this best season,finishing third in the very much coveted MVP,behind Mike Trout of the Angels and Alex Bregman of the Astros.

As Spring Training begins next week I will have more analysis of this young and very exciting team. But there is little doubt in my mind(injuries are the wild card)this is one of the best and youngest pitching staffs in all of baseball. More to come.

2020 Caribbean Series: Mexico gets some solid pitching blanks Colombia 4-0

HATO REY PUERTO RICO–In a series notable for its well pitched games, the masterpiece that Mexico’s Edgar Torres  achieved this afternoon stands head and shoulders above the rest. The six foot, 218 pound lefty from Puebla, who toiled ineffectively for the Durango Generals of the Mexican League last summer and had an unimpressive record of 4-6, 3.96 for the Mazatlán Deers of the Mexican Pacific League this past fall, hurled seven and two-thirds of nearly impeccable baseball against the Montería Buckaroos of the Edgar Rentería Colombian Baseball League, Colombia’s representative.That the Colombian contingent isn’t a powerhouse helps put Torres’s achievement in perspective, but it remains an achievement.
In his labor of nearly eight innings, Torres threw 97 pitches, 69 of which were strikes, to 24 batters. The only hit he allowed was a first inning single to Brallán Pérez, and Torres picked him off first almost immediately after that. The only other base runner he allowed was José Brizuela, on a fifth inning walk. Torres’s ground out to fly out ration was 10:3.
Mario Meza mopped up with a perfect inning and a third of relief.
The Mexicans didn’t score until the fifth, when Juan Gamboa singled and advanced to third on José Guadalupe Chávez’s single to right, scoring moments later on a wild pitch by Colombia’s starting pitcher, Edinson Frías. Rico Noel´s single brought Chávez home.
That was all that Mexico needed, but Roberto Peña’s two run homer in the seventh gave them some more breathing room.
Mexico is assured of a play off berth, but we’ll have to wait for the results of tonight’s game between Puerto Rico and the Dominican to see what mathematical calculations, if any, are necessary who plays whom and which team gets last licks.

2020 Caribbean Series: Puerto Rico takes advantage of home field with win over Colombia 3-2

HATO REY, PUERTO RICO–Last night’s contest between Colombia’s champions, the Montería Vaqueros (which is the Spanish word from which our “buckeroos” is derived) and the host Santurce Cangrejeros, or Crabbers, had loads of the ingredients that make baseball fun: speedy base running, outfield assists, close plays, a close score, an enthusiastic crowd, and, of course, a local angle for the fan. Just the thing to cap off the fourth straight day filled with three games and four straight nights filled with little sleep.
Wasted opportunities are frustrating. In baseball, they’re also fun. Every chance to achieve something – a shut down inning, a run, a double play, a stolen base- carries with it the excitement of being on the verge of a desired attainment. And last night’s game had its share. I can’t begin to list all of them, but I can point out a few examples.
Take Puerto Rico’s half of third inning. The Crabbers held a one run advantage over the Buckaroos. Jack López led off with a single and advanced to second when Colombia’s center fielder, Andy Vásquez, lost control of the ball. A sequence like that is an invitation to score. But pitcher Julio Vivas promptly withdrew the invitation by picking López off second. Notice that two mistakes were involved in this scenario, bad fielding and bad base running. Interesting or exciting baseball is not necessarily good baseball
In the top of the seventh, with the score knotted at two all, Vásquez laced a single to center. Arvicent Pérez followed this up with a single to right. Vásquez never stopped on his way to third, where he was cut down by a laser throw from right fielder Jan Hernández that would have put Ramón Liriano to shame. Of course, Colombia challenged the call, but it was upheld.
A lousy throw can afford as much excitement as a great one. Earlier in the game, after Colombia had tied the score at one all on a fifth inning solo homer by Vásquez,  the men from Montería jumped to a brief, one run lead in the sixth. Andrés Angulo led off with a walk and stole second. Jordan Díaz singled him home and went to second on the throw. Francisco Acuña sacrificed Díaz to second, but he kept on running. Seeing this, catcher Roberto Peña threw the ball towards third. Towards, not to. Left fielder David Vidal retrieved the errant missile and fired it to Peña, who put the tag on the overly ambitious Díaz. At this point, Devin Raftery relieved starter Héctor Hernández and struck out Rey Fuentes to get the final out of the inning.
There was drama when Puerto Rico went ahead in the eighth, using bunts and bunt attempts (including a couple by the fifth spot hitter) before Andury Acevedo plunked Jonathan Morales on a 3-0 count with the bases loaded to force in the winning run.
As for the local angle. That was provided by the Vaqueros’ first baseman, Alberto Callaspo.
