Cardinal stun No. 21 Buffaloes in Pac-12 hoops 72-64

Stanford took a large step toward solidifying its chances of reaching the NCAA tournament with a 72-64 men’s basketball victory over No. 21 Colorado Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Cardinal (20-9 overall, 10-7 Pac-12), and Colorado’s first three-game losing streak of the season.

Bryce Wills led the Cardinal with 19 points on 9-of-13 field goal shooting. Oscar da Silva was next with 16 points, followed by Daejon Davis and Tyrell Terry with 12 points apiece.

Wills, da Silva and Spencer Jones each grabbed five rebounds. Davis had five assists and Jones had two blocks, three assists and three steals.

Colorado’s top scorer was Tyler Bey with 17 points, followed by D’Shawn Schwartz with 14. McKinley Wright IV added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Buffaloes (21-9 overall, 10-7 Pac-12), who held a 30-29 rebounding edge.

Aside from an early Colorado lead, Stanford led most of the game. A Wills basket with 8:13 to play. The Buffs responded by scoring 10 straight points on three hoops by Wright and two by Bey.

The Cardinal endured a four-minute scoring drought, ended on a short jumper by Wills. Colorado proceded to miss its next seven shots.

By beating Colorado, the Cardinal are assured of a winning conference record going into the final weekend of the regular season, and can still finish with a possible second-place tie.

The Cardinal travel to Oregon State on Thursday.

Sharks Shut-out Penguins 5-0; Jones stops all 30 Penguin shots

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0 Saturday, extending the Penguins’ losing streak to six. Sharks goals came from Evander Kane, Timo Meier, Joel Kellman, Logan Couture and Joe Thornton. In all, nine Sharks players earned points in the game. Sharks goaltender Martin Jones made 30 saves for the win. Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry made 27 saves on 32 shots.

After the game, Sharks  captain Logan Couture said:

We know how it feels to be going through a tough time like that, when you get jumped on early. It really takes the wind out of your sails. So, that was our goal and I thought we did a very good job. You know, we started on time, we placed the puck in good spots and forced them to defend. With their skilled players they don’t like doing that was the big difference tonight.

The first period was scoreless until the 18:48 mark when Evander Kane took advantage of a turn-over in the neutral zone. He broke away form the pack and went right for the net. He moved right but then shot left to beat Tristan Jarry on the blocker side. Marc-Edouard Vlasic got the assist.

The shots were almost even at 11-10 Sharks. There was just one penalty, a tripping call against Mario Ferraro. The Penguins got three shots on the power play.

In the second period, penalties were called early and often. Each team had two penalties before the half-way mark of the period. Just 2:13 in, Evander Kane went to the box for a double-minor high-sticking against Chad Ruhwedel. Before that expired, Patrick Marleau was called for slashing Mario Ferraro. Less than a minute after that, Mario Ferraro was called for high-sticking Sidney Crosby. At 9:05, Marcus Pettersson was called for tripping Brent Burns. The Penguins got four shots during their time with the man advantage, while the Sharks got none.

Just seconds after that fourth penalty ended, Timo Meier added to the Sharks’ tally. Mario Ferraro held the puck in the zone and then, under pressure, got it to Marcus Sorensen. Sorensen made a quick pass to Timo Meier who was in the face-off circle. Meier took a shot that went under a defender’s stick and then through a hole against the post. Assists went to Sorensen and Ferraro.

At 14:15, Joel Kellman scored the Sharks’ third goal of the game. Marcus Sorensen carried the puck in along the boards, but had Schultz all over him. He dropped the puck to Kellman, who looked like he might pass to Radim Simek. Instead, he took the shot.

Radim Simek and Patrick Hornqvist added to the penalty tally with simultaneous minors at 14:56. A series of slashes around the Sharks net resulted in Simek challenging Hornqvist to fight but his invitation was declined. Simek went for roughing while Hornqvist went for slashing.

Logan Couture scored San Jose’s fourth of the game 8:01 into the third period. Ferraro took a shot from the blue line that Couture redirected under the goalie for his 16th of the season. Assists went to Ferraro and Kane.

Patric Hornqvist was called for interference at the same time as that goal, putting the Sharks on a power play. The Sharks got one shot on that power play.

Joe Thornton inadvertently scored the Sharks’ fifth goal. He tried to pass the puck to Timo Meier on the other side of the blue paint, but it went off a defender and into the net instead. Assists went to Meier and Tim Heed.

The final shot count was 32-30 Sharks. In the face-off circle, the Penguins won 57% of the draws.

Midway through the third period, Sharks defenseman Jacob Middleton and Penguins forward Dominik Simon left the game with injuries. Their injuries were not related but occurred at almost the same time in the game. Patrick Hornqvist pushed Middleton down in front of the net and Middleton seemed to get one leg in a bad position. “I just know Middsy went down pretty hard. I think it was his left ankle, he was screaming. It wasn’t good,” said Logan Couture after the game.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs in San Jose at 7:30 PM PT.

#2 The Philadelphia Flyers continue to roll with a 5-2 win over visiting New York Rangers at Wells Fargo Center. Claude Giroux scored twice and the Rangers lost Chris Kreider to a fractured ankle.

#3 Alex Stalock stopped 24 shots getting his fourth shutout of 2019-20 season as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0. The Wild dominated from the puck drop.

#4 The Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson saved 28 shots against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a narrow 3-2 win at the Duck Pond in Anaheim. The Pens who come into San Jose tonight are on a five game losing streak.

#5 The Las Vegas Golden Knights picked up a 4-2 win against the Buffalo Sabers on Friday night as the Knights Reilly Smith scored two goals to pace Vegas to victory.

Coronavirus Threatening Tokyo Olympics

The Tokyo Olympics,scheduled to start on July 24 and end August 25 according to the IOC (International Olympic Committee). Japan is one of the countries affected around the world with the Coronavirus and officials of the OIC say there could be a final decisions as late as the end of May.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says Japan is to ask all schools to close this coming Monday to prevent spread of the Coronavirus. The closure will affect 13 million students and will continue until the school year ends in late March.

The Coronavirus now affecting most of the world,has forced cancelling of dozens of sporting events events in Asia and Europe and many international events like car racing. Little or no events, so far, in the sports world have been cancelled here in the United States, but things could change at any time,as this virus keeps spreading.

So far MLB, NBA,NHL and others have not announced any plans for events cancellations.

The biggest company in the world (Bay Area based) Apple stock has dropped as of today,as well as all the financial markets and the world has taken a hit through this week.

#1 Bobby Ryan of the Ottawa Senators coming off a NHL/NHLPA alcohol assistance program since November 20th stepped on the ice and scored a hat trick for the Senators 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

#2  The Winnipeg Jets Connor Hellebuyck picked up his fifth shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over the Washington Capitals. Hellebuyck had his moments standing on his head stopping a Alex Ovechkin twice and a great glove save from the Caps Ilya Kovachuk’s shot in the second period on a power play.

#3 The San Jose Sharks picked up an overtime win against the New Jersey Devils 3-2 when the Sharks team captain Logan Couture scored an overtime goal his first since his return from his injury

#4 The Nashville Predators Mikael Granlund got a game winning goal with just 0.1 of a second left in the game to force overtime against the Calgary Flames. Granlund then scored in the overtime stanza at 1:20 for the game winner.

#5 The Chicago Blackhawks Dominik Kubalik scored a hat trick in the third period during the Hawks five goal rally to come back to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2. The Blackhawks Corey Crawford stopped 37 shots. It was the Bolts fourth loss in a row.

Lakers, without LeBron trounce Warriors 116-86

San Francisco- The visiting Los Angeles Lakers, without the services of LeBron James, overwhelmed the Warriors in the second half of the game to win going away 116-86. The Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins did not play due to a back issue. However, the W’s welcomed back Draymond Green back to the starting lineup.

The Warriors gave the Lakers a tussle in the first half. The Lakers, owners of the best record in the Western Conference, did not push the young Warriors aside in the first half. The W’s behind the play of Damion Lee, Jordan Poole, and Eric Paschall finished the first period tied at 24. The W’s held their own in the second quarter. The Lakers led 37-29 when the W’s closed to within two 39-37. With the score 42-37, the refs called a foul on Draymond Green. Draymond screamed at the refs and let loose with an expletive. Draymond was hit with his 13th technical foul of the year. On the next play, Green appeared to be fouled by Dwight Howard and was angered that there was no call. He unleashed his anger at the refs again..Since it was his second of the night, he was ejected. Also, it was his 14h of the campaign and two more will cost him a one-game suspension. The Lakers could not shake the determined Warriors. Rookie Eric Paschall played well and made three straight buckets. The Lakers’ Anthony Davis hit a three to put them up 54-50. Paschall made another bucket to finish the first half with the Warriors trailing 54-52.

The Lakers blew it open in the third quarter. They overwhelmed the W’s 40-17. They had two much size, and their defense stopped the Warriors cold. The Lakers forced turnovers and their offense started clicking. The Lakers won the fourth quarter 22-17 to win the game 116-86.

Game Notes and Stats- With the loss, the W’s drop to 12-47. They have lost eight in a row. The Lakers improved to 45-12 and have now won seven in a row.

The Warriors offense went south in the second half. They made a total of 13 field goals. Five were three-pointer, and 8 were two-pointers. The Lakers’ defense forced 16 turnovers in the second half. The Warriors committed a total of 26 in the game. Teams usually lose when they turn the ball over that many times. Thursday night was no exception.

Eric Paschall led the team with 23 points. Jordan Poole had 16 points and 8 rebounds. Damion Lee had 15, and Ky Bowman finished with 11.

The Lakers Anthony Davis had 23, Kyle Kuzma 18, JaVale McGee 12, Avery Bradley 12, and Rajon rondo 12.

The Warriors signed Mychal Mulder to a 10-day contract. The W’s will re-evaluate Steph Curry on Saturday. Steph is hoping to play on Sunday, but head coach Steve Kerr is not sure that Steph will be ready

The Warriors play the Sun in Phoenix on Saturday. The game time will be at 6:00 pm. They then travel across the county to face the Washington Wizards on Sunday. That game will start at 5:30 pm.

#3 In the second half the Utes fought right back outscoring the Cardinal 40-36 and it was just a margin of error that could have cost the Cardinal in that second half

#4 Head coach Jerod Haase said the game was not a thing of beauty but the Cardinal hung on just enough to win it

Stanford leads wire-to-wire to defeat Utah 70-62

Palo Alto- The Stanford Cardinal play hosted to the Utah Utes Wednesday at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal wanted to avenge the loss they suffered when they played Utah in Salt Lake City. Stanford came out firing. The built-up an eighteen-point lead. The young men from Utah finally got something going late in the first half and cut the deficit to twelve 34-22. The Utes gave the Cardinal a tussle in the second half. They outscored the Cardinal 40-36, and their defense gave the Cardinal fits. They put the clamps on Da Silva and Terry. Jaiden DeLaire came through in the last nine minutes of the game with nine points to help Stanford win.

The Cardinal, behind their star, Oscar Da Silva, raced out to an early 14-2 lead over the Utah Utes The Cardinal defense held the Utes to just 2 points in the first seven minutes of the game. The Cardinal increased the lead to eighteen 29-11. The Utes did not fold. They kept attacking the boards and were able to get back into the game. Stanford won the first half 34-22. Tyrell Terry connected on three threes for 9 points. Spencer Jones added six for the Cardinal. The leading scorers for Utah were Jaxon Brenchley with 7, and the big seven-foot center, Brenden Carlson, had 5.

The Utes came out firing to start the second half. They went on an 8-2 run the cut the deficit to six 36-30. Tyrell Terry connected on a couple of threes, and the Cardinal went up 48-37. The Utes came back, but the Cardinal refused to wilt. The Utes’ defense focused on stopping Tyrell Tyler and Oscar Da Silva. The strategy worked as Utah trailed by three 63-60 with 1:29 left. However, sophomore Jaiden DeLaire picked up the hit a  three to put the Cardinal in the driver’s seat. Terry was fouled twice in the last minute of the game, and he made all four free throws. Utah scored a basket late in the half, but it was not enough. The Cardinal wins 70-62.

Game Notes and Stats- With the win, Stanford is now 19-9 overall and 8-7 in the conference. The Cardinal has three games left to play this year. They meet Colorado at home on Sunday. They finish the season against Oregon State and Oregon next week. Utah falls to 15-13 overall and 6-10 in the Pac-12.

Freshman Tyrell Terry led Stanford with 27 points. He made seven threes in eleven tries. Oscar Da Silva finished with 20. Jaiden DeLaire had 11, Spencer Jones 6. Utah had four players in double figures. Timmy Allen led Utah wit 17. Both Gach had 15, Jaxon Brenchley 13, and Branden Carlson 12.

As mentioned above, Stanford plays Colorado, ranked 21st in the country, Sunday after at Maples Pavilion. The game will start at 3 pm and will be televised on ESPNU.
