#2 Rivera said that the Bears are at a point where things could go either way. Rivera wants to move the team forward and that Cal has limited resources. Rivera said that the biggest thing is the investment in the soul of the team and that it’s about the time not the dollars.
#3 Rivera in the NFL had won a Super Bowl as a player and two NFL Coach of the Year awards. This GM job at Cal might be even tougher than his work in the NFL at his former alma mater at Cal.
#4 Cal head coach Justin Wilcox that the guys have put in a lot of work in the off season and through fall camp and now and that it’s time to play. The Bears aren’t perfect yet and expects to be better and better but it’s time to go compete against somebody.
#5 Cal opens up against their old Pac 12 team opponents the Oregon State Beavers at Reser Stadium. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is Cal’s starting quarterback he’ll face the Beavers defense and is hoping to find some open receivers.

Sacramento A’s silence Tigers bats in convincing 7-0 shutout win

The A’s wasted no time setting the tone Tuesday night, jumping on Detroit early and never looking back in a crisp 7-0 victory that showed off both timely hitting and steady pitching. It was one of those nights where everything clicked for the Green and Gold, while the Tigers could never quite find a foothold.
Rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz got the offense rolling in the bottom of the first with a sharp single to left, and the A’s quickly loaded pressure on Casey Mize. Shea Langeliers worked a walk, and after a Brent Rooker strikeout, Tyler Soderstrom delivered a line drive single to left to score Kurtz for the game’s first run. From there, Sacramento was off and running.
Luis Morales, the A’s young starter, made sure Detroit couldn’t answer back. He worked a clean first inning, getting Colt Keith swinging and Gleyber Torres to fly out before snuffing out Kerry Carpenter with a lineout to first. The Tigers went quietly, and the home crowd could already feel a rhythm developing.
That rhythm turned into a drumbeat in the second inning. After JJ Bleday struck out, Brett Harris grounded a single through short, and Zack Gelof followed with a booming homer to left-center, his first of the season, to give the A’s a 3-0 cushion.
Sacramento was not done yet. Kurtz added his second hit of the night, Langeliers doubled to right, and Rooker lofted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-0. Mize was clearly on the ropes, and the Tigers were left scrambling.
Detroit’s best chance to strike back came in the top of the second when Spencer Torkelson crushed a triple into the gap, but Morales bore down, striking out Wenceel Pérez and coaxing a lineout from Zach McKinstry to escape unscathed. That was the theme all night: when the Tigers threatened, Sacramento’s pitchers slammed the door.
The A’s padded the lead again in the fourth thanks to a hustle double from Harris and a throwing error from Mize that let Gelof reach safely while Harris crossed the plate. At 5-0, the Tigers’ demeanor and drive sagged, and manager A.J. Hinch had no choice but to turn to his bullpen, summoning Rafael Montero. It did not matter, the hole had already been dug too deep.
Meanwhile, Morales just kept dealing. He scattered a handful of baserunners but never let Detroit string anything together. Every time the Tigers put someone on, he found a way, whether it was freezing Spencer Torkelson with a third strike or jamming Keith into soft contact. By the sixth inning, Detroit had yet to push a man past third base, and Sacramento fans were already thinking about the “zero” glowing on the scoreboard.
The bullpen did not flounder. Justin Sterner entered in the eighth and promptly struck out the side, making the Tigers look overmatched. By then, the A’s offense had tacked on two more runs courtesy of Gelof once again, this time hammering a line-drive double to center that plated JJ Bleday and Harris. It was a fitting cap to Gelof’s night, as he not only went deep but also drove in four runs.
Detroit’s last gasp came in the ninth when Gleyber Torres worked a leadoff walk. Any flicker of hope was stomped out quickly though, as pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones rolled into a double play and Andy Ibáñez grounded out to short to end it. The Tigers had been blanked, and the A’s faithful were treated to a shutout win that checked every box.
Sacramento’s offense was efficient, stringing together 11 hits, including three from Kurtz and a monster performance from Gelof. Harris chipped in with two hits and two runs scored, while Langeliers reached base twice and guided the young arms behind the plate. On the mound, Morales earned the win with six scoreless frames, while Sterner and Brady Basso finished things off without breaking a sweat.
For a team still finding its footing in Sacramento, this was the kind of crisp, no-drama victory. The pitching was airtight, the defense was clean, and the bats came through with power and patience. If the A’s can bottle up this formula, the Green and Gold will make life miserable for plenty of opponents still in the race for post season.

SAN FRANCISCO – Rafael Devers went 4-for-4 with two home runs to lead the Giants offensive eruption. Matt Chapman blasted his 200th career home run en route to a 12-3 win over the Cubs.
Game two between the Giants and Cubs featured a lot of big swings and early scoring.
In the bottom of the first, Rafael Devers launched a ball over the center field wall for his 26th home run of the season and first of the night, putting the Giants ahead 1-0. The first hit of his 4-for-4 night set the tone for the rest of the Giants offense to add to the explosion.
It was the southpaw, Carson Whisenhunt on the mound for the Giants who really only made one bad pitch in his five innings of work. It was a 92mph middle-in sinker to Cubs second baseman, Nico Hoerner that ended up in the left field bleachers in the second inning. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson scored on what wound up being the Cubs only offense of the night.
Cubs starter Colin Rea entered Wednesday’s game with a 10-5 record and 3.96 era and got knocked around by the Giants bats. They went right after him, hitting everything he threw all over the yard.
En route to their fourth straight win, the Giants have accumulated some luck and that showed in the fifth inning. In the visiting half Carson Whisenhunt escaped a bases loaded jam on a spectacular 1-6-4-3 inning-ending double play. A hard-hit ball up the middle deflected off Whisenhunt’s glove in an attempt to field it. “My first instinct was to go for the ball”, said Whisenhunt. He slowed it down just enough for a lunging Willy Adames to corral it and send a back-handed, bare-handed flip to second baseman Casey Schmitt covering the bag. Miraculously, Schmitt still had plenty of time to gun Justin Turner at first to escape without damage.
Bob Melvin attributed the double play to Willy Adames’ defense of late, saying “Willy’s been playing great defense here for an extended string and he’s been right in the middle of everything…it’s not a surprise the way he’s playing defensively right now”.
With runners on the corners in the home half of the fifth Matt Chapman dunked a base hit into right field scoring Devers from third. Cubs right fielder, Kyle Tucker fired a throw right off the helmet of Chapman, standing on first base, bouncing all the way to the backstop and allowing Dom Smith to come all the way around from first and score the Giants sixth run of the game.
“The one off the helmet, yeah I can’t remember the last time I saw something like that”, Melvin said as he acknowledged the bounces the Giants have been getting in their favor lately.
Casey Schmitt knocked Chapman in to cap off a three-run fifth inning. The Giants went on to score three more in the sixth, on Devers’ second home run of the game, one run in the seventh on Matt Chapman’s 200th career home run, and one in the eighth on a Heliot Ramos homer off Cubs catcher Reese McGuire who went into pitch.
Putting up a run in all but two innings in which they hit, the Giants offense totaled 12 runs on 13 hits while knocking around another quality Cubs starter. Homering for the tenth straight game as well, the offense has finally come back to life with Devers, Ramos, and Chapman leading the way.
Winners of four straight now, the Giants look to their ace to complete the series sweep Thursday afternoon at Oracle Park.

#1 Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has agreed to a six game suspension for a personal conduct violation policy. Rice will begin serving his suspension week 1 of the regular season. Rice will return for Oct 19’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Rice will be attending a disciplinary hearing on Sep 30th. Rice pleaded guilty in mid July on third degree felony charges in car crash that left serious bodily injuries. Rice received a sentence of five years and had his probation deferred probation and got 30 days jail as part of his probation.
#2 Jacksonville Jaguars receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter who had been dealing with upper body injury issues since Aug 14 is reportedly to be healthy and is expected to play against the Carolina Panthers on Sun Sep 7th according to Jags general manager James Gladstone. Hunter had practiced in individual practices but did not play in the last two pre season games.
#3 The New England Patriots improved on their quarterback depth chart picking up former New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito on waivers on Wednesday. The Patriots released wide receiver Kendrick Bourne after contract talks broke down. Devito was a fan favorite with Giants fans who joined the Giants as a undrafted free agent in 2023. DeVito now joins the Pats starter Drake Maye and back up quarterback Joshua Dobbs.
#4 Adam Thielen was brought back to his native state of Minnesota and where he played most of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings. Thielen was traded from the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers will receive from the Vikings the 2026 fifth round pick, the 2027 fourth round pick. While the Vikings get Thielen, a conditional 2026 seventh round pick and a 2027 fifth round pick.
#5 The San Francisco 49ers hold out wide receiver Jauan Jennings who is requesting a contract extension or be traded but the 49ers who noted for being a very tough negotiating partner and 49ers general manager John Lynch said the team has no intention of trading Jennings. Jennings back in July left the 49ers camp on the fourth day of camp due to a calf injury and never returned. Lynch said of Jennings trade request that he had asked for it and Lynch said their not doing it and the team plans to move on.

Mordecai threw for ten completed passes out of 13 for 103 yards, a touchdown, no interceptions, no sacks, and rushed for 12 yards on three carries. Do you see Mordecai getting some playing time in the regular season.
#3 Brock Purdy told the media this week that he was disappointed in losing the Super Bowl LVIII in 2024. The 49ers lost to the Kansas Chiefs. “I would say I was frustrated about losing the Super Bowl, and it was like, ‘All right, we got to get back,’ ” Purdy told SI “That’s all I saw, was getting back. And because some of those guys are out, I have to go make plays to get us back.

Justin Verlander threw six strong innings Tuesday night to earn his first career win at Oracle Park. Flores and Chapman homered off Cubs pitching and Luis Matos stayed hot at the plate for a 5-2 win.
The Giants returned from an off-day and a 3-4 road trip Tuesday night to Oracle Park to host the Chicago Cubs, fresh off a sweep of the Angels in Anaheim over the weekend. In game one of the series, Justin Verlander made his 23rd start as a Giant hoping for his second win of the year.
Verlander tossed a scoreless 1st inning and former Giant, Matt Boyd, who spent part of the 2022 campaign in San Francisco on the injured list, matched him in the home half for the Cubs. Boyd, who went into Tuesday’s game 12-6, 2.61, was making his 26th start of the year.
The two veterans dueled it out on the mound through the first few innings with the score 1-0 in the Giants’ favor. Wilmer Flores hit his 14th home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning to put the Giants ahead 1-0. That was the only run scored through the first three innings.
The Cubs offense got started in the top of the fourth when Ian Happ doubled and later came around to score on a Matt Shaw single.
Chicago got to Verlander again in the fifth, scoring a two-out run to take the lead. Pete Crow-Armstrong hustled out a double and scored on a base hit by Carson Kelly, easily beating the throw home.
The Giants came together to respond in the home half of the inning. Rallying to put Verlander in line for the win, Luis Matos got the fun started with a lead-off double off the bricks in right field to extend his hitting streak to five games. After Patrick Bailey popped out and Drew Gilbert went down swinging, Heliot Ramos came through to give the Giants a two-out run of their own and tie the game.
Rafael Devers followed with a bloop single that fell in shallow left field to score Ramos and the Giants took the lead.
Verlander set the Cubs down in order in the sixth and finished his night, 6.0ip, 7h, 2er, 2bb, 5k.
The Giants did nothing but add to the lead, scoring two more in the sixth inning on a Matt Chapman home run (17).
Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto, and Ryan Walker combined for three shutout innings to preserve Justin Verlander’s first career win at Oracle Park.
Postgame when Verlander was asked about his outing and the win, he put it quite simply… “Feels good”.
The Giants have won three in a row and started the homestand strong. Carson Whisenhunt (1-1, 4.91) will face the Cubs’ Colin Rea (10-5, 3.96) Wednesday night at Oracle Park.

#5 It’s off to BYU and the Cougars as it will the second game of the season for BYU they host Portland State this Sat Aug 30th in Provo. The Cardinal came close and really want to get that first win can they do it against this BYU team Saturday?

#1 Seattle Mariner catcher Cal Raleigh is setting records on Monday night he belted his 50th home run of the season against the San Diego Padres at T Mobile Field in Seattle. Raleigh has the most home runs hit by a catcher in a single season. Raleigh also joins Mickey Mantle as two of the only switch hitters to hit 50 or more home runs in season. Mantle hit 52 1956 and 54 1961.
#2 It was a wild argument by St Louis Cardinals designated hitter Wilson Contreas who was called out on a third strike that was inside the lower part of the imaginary box. Cards manager Oliver Marmol was also thrown out but had to restrain Contreras who almost made contact with plate umpire Derek Thomas and Contreas threw his bat at Cards hitting coach Brant Brown which was intended for the umpire. Umpire crew chief Jordan Baker said that Contreras was saying vulgar stuff to Thomas and that’s why he was tossed.
#3 After having quadruple bypass heart surgery Los Angeles manager Ron Washington said on Monday night that he feels great and said he was looking forward to recovering in New Orleans where he lives. Washington who was known to be a long time smoker and since quit said that doctors told him he could start doing light work in about eight weeks. Washington rejoined the Angels in Arlington to be with the team but he wasn’t there to work but to have fun with the guys.
#4 For the third straight game the Cleveland Guardians were shutout this time by the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night 9-0. The Guardians had not been shutout in three straight games since the 1991 season. “Everyone’s frustrated,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “We need to hit. We need to score more runs. We need to get things going on offense, and we’re all aware of it. We’re all working through it, and it’s going to take all of us individually doing our best.”
#5 The Sacramento A’s continue to roll winning their seventh in their last ten games this time at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night 8-3. The A’s win puts them just two games out of climbing out of the AL West cellar for a tie with the fourth place Angels.
