#3 Quinn did mention he did like the handy work of goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood who stopped 21 of 24 shots.

#4 Troy, William Eklund scored a goal on Tuesday night against the Ducks talk about the goal and how you see him in pre season so far.

#5 The Sharks face off against the Ducks again tonight seeing what you saw last night what are some of the expectations that Coach Quinn will be expecting as opposed to falling behind 3-0 early.

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Troy:

#1 San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn on center and team captain Logan Couture is still waiting how Couture’s lower body injury comes along. Quinn is of a cautious approach not to bring Couture not too fast but is hoping he could be ready by opening day.

#2 Right now Couture is week to week Quinn and the lower body injury has kept him from skating with the team so it’ll be a question as to how season ready he’ll be when he gets back on the ice again.

#3 Courture got hurt in the off season training and looks as if the injury built up gradually to the point he had discomfort skating. Couture has said that he hates sitting and wants to be skating with his teammates.

#4 Troy, talk about the need to have someone like Couture in the line on opening day especially if your opening up against a team like the Vegas Golden Knights who are the NHL champions.

#5 Coach Quinn said that he would love to have Couture ready to go but first and foremost he wants him to be healthy and ready before any of that could be considered.

San Jose, CA – A preseason game between San Jose Sharks (1-1) and Anaheim Ducks (1-1) and the Sharks are coming off a victory over the Kings and now look to keep developing this roster as they approach the season opener against the defending champion Golden Knights. The Ducks won at SAP Center in San Jose with a two goal 4-2 win. Both teams are at .500 in exhibition play at 1-1.

The Ducks and Sharks started off the first period with a back and forth pace, but then the Ducks got on the board first with a wrist shot past Sharks goalie Mackenzie Blackwood by Anaheim’s Brett Leason (assisted by Sam Carrick and Jacob Perreault), 1-0 Ducks.

Anaheim quickly followed up that goal with another one, but this one off a wrist shot right off the blue line and this goal was scored by defenseman Olen Zellweger (assisted by Ilya Lyubushkin and Sam Carrick). 2-0 Ducks and the avalanche wouldn’t stop for Anaheim.

A goal for Andrew Agozzino assisted by Pavol Regenda and Olen Zellweger to put the Ducks up 3-0 and at this point the game still had seven minutes on the clock to go. When the first period came to an end, the biggest takeaway for the Sharks was that the offense created opportunities, especially the Eklund/Strum/Halttunen line, but the defense letting the Ducks capitalize on opportunities they created left the offense playing from behind and playing from behind early.

The second period started with more intensity for the Sharks and more shots in less time. San Jose had half the shots they did in the first period and they did it before the period was halfway over. Playing a 4 on 3 powerplay William Eklund scored the first goal for the Sharks showing why he is one of the best young guys in the San Jose organization.

The goal was assisted by Kevin Lebanc and Shakir Mukhamadullin who has been showing a great display of passing in the first two periods. 3-1 being the score at this point in the second period. Penalties for Anaheim became a factor in the second period as they tallied up three within two minutes of each other and this gave San Jose some momentum to hopefully generate more offense.

Blackwood’s second period was a shutout, but a key point of this second period shoutout was the Sharks defense keeping Anaheim away from rebounding the missed shots. San Jose in both periods have accumulated six shots a period and compared to the Ducks’ 18 shots on goal, the Sharks seem to be still figuring out the system that they want to run, but it’s all coming together.

The final period started with the Sharks attacking and the feeling in the arena was that there would be another goal for San Jose and almost four minutes into the third, that feeling was justified as Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored on a breakaway with an assist from Nico Sturm and now it was 3-2 with a lot of game still left.

The gap on shots was closing between San Jose and Anaheim and so was the score. The chances the Sharks were getting were better, but they weren’t resulting in on goal shots which results in goals. With six minutes left in the third, the Sharks showed that they do well screening the net, but when no shots are actually close to the net, then it’s just bodies in the way.

The biggest penalty for the Sharks came in this last period by Vlasic (4 minute minor) with two minutes and 20 seconds left, so San Jose was on a penalty kill to end the game. Anaheim gets a penalty with a minute left making it a 4 on 4 as the Sharks approach the close of the game and San Jose also pulled Blackwood to make it a 5 on 4 in the last minute. After missing two shots, the Ducks recover the puck in open ice with an empty net and score one last goal. 4-2 Ducks.

The game comes to an end, both clubs will see each other Wednesday night in Anaheim for another preseason game. Face off 7:00pm PT at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Sharks open preseason by dominating Vegas 5-2

SAN JOSE- The preseason could not have gotten off to a better start for the Sharks as they walloped their Pacific Division rivals Vegas by a final of 5-2

Kaapo Kahkonen got the start with Magnus Chrona backing him up while Vegas had Jiri Patera in between the pipes with Jesper Vikman playing backup.

The first period for the Sharks was filled with power plays and goals as they drew three penalties and scored four goals.

The goal scoring was kicked off by Henry Thrun who’s looking to build off of his eight game stint in the NHL last season. Following that up would be Thomas Hertl who capitalized off of a beautiful tic-tac-toe play involving Mike Hoffman and Thrun. Less than a minute later journeyman Nathan Todd scored off a fortunate bounce out front making it 3-0. All three goals came before the ten minute mark had even passed.

Late in the first Ivan Barbashev got one back off a backhand right in the slot that beat Kahkonen top shelf. Thrun was not done showing off his skills as another seeing eye shot from the youngster found its way in giving him two goals and an assist in the period.

At the end of the first the shots were tied at ten apiece.

The second was a little more back and forth as the teams exchanged chances. Once again the Sharks found the board on a pass by Alexander Barabonv that found a seam through the slot. The recipient of the pass Kyle Burroughs shelved it over Patera making it 5-1.

Toward the end of the second Daniil Chayka flung one on the net that tipped in off Brett Howden cutting the Sharks lead to three.

The shot totals at the end of the second were 21-18 in favor of Vegas.

Starting out the third for Vegas was Jesper Vikman in goal.

As far as final periods go this one ended up being rather uneventful as the San Jose looked a little more sluggish. Starting out the third for Vegas was Jesper Vikman in goal.

Early on the Sharks ended up in penalty trouble as Barabonov took a holding penalty but Vegas could not capitalize.

The Sharks were able to hold on for the win 5-2 with Kahkonen making 32 saves.

The three stars of the game were 1st: Henry Thrun 2nd: Thomas Hertl 3rd: Kyle Burroughs

San Jose’s next preseason game will be against the Ducks on Tuesday at home at 7 p.m.

#3 Talk about the development of the future as Grier and Quinn look forward to see what William Eklund can bring his offensive shooting.

#4 Grier said that he wants this team to be gritty, fast paced, competitive and in your face and he feels the Sharks have laid out the ground work for that.

#5 The Sharks open pre season Sun Sep 24 against the Vegas Golden Knights you just never know what to expect from when the Sharks meet up with the Knights who are expected to be a strong competitor during the regular season.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Troy Ewers: Sharks put hopes on Hoffman, Duclair and Blackwood for 23-24 season

Winnipeg Jets’ Cole Perfetti (91) turns after scoring a goal against New Jersey Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood (29) during the first period of an NHL hockey game Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, in Newark, N.J. MacKenzie who plays goalie for San Jose is preparing for the pre season (AP News photo)

On the San Jose Sharks podcast with Troy Ewers:

#1 Troy there’s no doubt that the SJ Sharks have a lot stacked against them from making the playoffs this season. They struggled even when they had Erik Karlsson now they can expect to struggle even more without him.

#2 Last season the Sharks had goaltenders James Reimer and Kaapo Kahkonen and they had a rough seasons.

#3 The Sharks in their save percentage had .881 and that was 2% less than the rest of the league where the average was .899 and they need to bring that up

#4 For Kahkonen he needs to be able to stop the shot and have the kind of season he had in the early part of last year. MacKenzie Blackwood needs to execute the kind of performance that got him to the NHL in the first place.

#5 The loss of Timo Meier last season hurts the team and the Sharks are looking at Anthony Duclair and Mike Hoffman to help out in some crucial scoring.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro: With or without Karlsson this would have been a rebuild year for San Jose

San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson against the Pittsburgh Penguins during the third period of an NHL hockey game in San Jose, Calif., Feb. 14, 2023. Karlsson joins the Penguins in a deal on Sun Aug 6, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro:

On thing about dealing defenseman Erik Karlsson to the Pittsburgh Penguins it give San Jose Sharks general manager some room to sign some players. The big thing is that the Sharks got the first round pick from the Penguins.

The Sharks got forwards Mikael Granlund and Mike Hoffman, defenseman Jan Rutta and a top ten protected 2024 first round pick and the Montreal Canadiens got goaltender Casey DeSmith and defenseman Jeff Petry.

The Penguins in turn picked up from the Sharks forwards Rem Pitlick and Dillon Hamaliuk a 2026 with Karlsson. This on the face of it is not a good deal for San Jose who gives up a defenseman who scored 101 points. Look for Karlsson to be a huge asset joining Pittsburgh with Evgeni Malkin and Sid Crosby.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Troy Ewers: Kraken, Penguins or Hurricanes who will pick up Karlsson’s massive contract?

San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier meets with the news media on Tue Jul 5, 2022 at his introduction to the team. Grier has made a number of moves this past week (Tue Jul 4, 2023) and the possibility of moving Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson (AP News file photo)

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Troy:

#1 Troy, San Jose Sharks Erik Karlsson is a three time Norris Award winner and teams as well as the Sharks are shopping him but there are no takers because teams are concerned about cap space in obtaining Karlsson who makes $11.5 million yearly and has three more seasons left on his contract running through the 2026-27 season.

#2 Teams that might make it work are the Pittsburgh Penguins or the Seattle Kraken. While the Penguins could show interest, the Carolina Panthers might have space issues but the Kraken have the cap room and the budget to take Karlsson off the Sharks hands. Either way Karlsson would be competitive playing for any one of these teams.

#3 Troy talk about how important it is for the Sharks to have signed forward Nathan Todd, Todd comes to the Sharks after playing 16 games for the AHL Springfield Thunderbirds with eight goals and six assists. Sharks general manager Mike Grier signed Todd because he was big on helping the Thunderbirds get into the Calder Cup in 2022 and was named the 2020-21 All Star team scoring 12 goals and 20 assists.

#4 This week the Sharks picked up defenseman Leon Gwanke in exchange for defenseman Artemi Kniazev. Gwanke 24, had a strong showing last season skating for the AHL Manitoba Moose scoring 20 goals and 25 assists coming from the Winnipeg Jets organization.

#5 Making his second stint with the San Jose Sharks signed forward Ryan Carpenter to a one year two way contract. Carpenter formerly played for the New York Rangers scoring last season 21 goals and 23 assists. Carpenter played with the Sharks in the 2013-14 season to 2017-18. Troy talk about how big of help Carpenter will be for San Jose this season.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Troy Ewers: Sharks Karlsson will be hard to move due to big contract

San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson (65) works for the puck against Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin (91) during the second period of an NHL hockey game Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, Karlsson makes over $11 million a season and most NHL teams won’t consider taking on a contract of that size. (AP News photo)

On the San Jose Sharks podcast with Troy:

#1 How amazing would it be for the San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson to win the Norris Award for the third time in career.

#2 One of the toughest things about the Sharks looking to trade Karlsson is his contract Karlsson after four years with the Sharks is the highest paid defenseman in the NHL.

#3 Karlsson who gets a $11.5 million contract makes it tough to move him and considering the Sharks haven’t raised the salary cap in since 2019 and the cap has gone up only to $2 million up to $83.5 million.

#4 Friday was a big day for Patrick Marleau after four months out from retiring his jersey. Marleau now takes the role of player development coach and hockey operations advisor. Marleau 43 is the NHL leader in games played. The Sharks have not made post season since 2019 could Marleau be the answer to help them get there?

#5 Troy talk about one of the key things that head coach David Quinn would like to see out of this off season for improvements on the team.

NHL Stanley Cup Playoff podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Stars-Kraken battle in elimination game tonight in Seattle; Will Ruff return as New Jersey coach; plus more

Seattle Kraken right wing Jordan Eberle (7) scores as Dallas Stars center Roope Hintz (24) and defenseman Esa Lindell (23) watch during the first period of Game 6 of an NHL hockey Stanley Cup second-round playoff series Saturday, May 13, 2023, in Seattle. (AP News photo)

On the NHL Stanley Cup playoff podcast:

#1 It’s a thriller and a huge game tonight with the Seattle Kraken and the Dallas Stars who play for all the marbles tonight for the Western Conference second round. This is a real head to head with the series with the Kraken defeating the Stars in their last match up in game 6 in Seattle to stay in the series.

#2 The Stars are 3-5 in game sevens since moving from Minnesota in 1993-94 where they are 2-2 at home, the Stars lost last year’s game 7 to the Calgary Flames 3-2 at Scotiabank Saddledome.

#3 The Stars took that tough loss to the Kraken in game 6, 6-3 and forced a game 7, the Stars got a goal from Joe Pavelski his eighth of the post season but it was the turnovers that hurt the Stars in this last contest.

#4 The New Jersey Devils head coach Lindy Ruff may not know if he’ll be back next season but Ruff did lead the Devils to their best season in 41 years going 52-22-8 a 49 point improvement from last season. It also was the first time that New Jersey had qualified for the playoffs since 2018.

#5 Taking a look at some possible draft picks for the San Jose Sharks, as you know Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli are not joining the Sharks in the draft. However taking a look at some draft possibilities Will Smith, Leo Carlsson, or Matvei Michkov. How would one of these players be of a big help for San Jose?
