#1 Marko, too much Bakersfield Condors (9-6-0-0) on Friday night as they attacked the net without hesitation scoring two goal in the opening volley and ending up getting a 4-1 win over the San Jose Barracuda (5-4-2-0) at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

#2 For Barracuda goaltender Alexi Melnichuk (2-3-2) a tough night facing 22 shots and allowing four goals. For Milnichuk was it a matter of not getting defensive protection up front or the Condors have a number of snipers who can figure out getting in the back in the net?

#3 The Condors with the win picked up their seventh straight win and they did it with the help of goaltender Stuart Skinner (7-2-0-0) who allowed just one goal and stopped 23 Barracuda shots.

#4 The Condors are a devastating team on offense in the first period they have now outscored their opponents 13-0 during this seven game win streak and have scored the first goal in eight straight games.

#5 Same two teams tonight Marko, does Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer go with Melnichuk or will he go with another goaltender as the Condors look to score their 14th straight win tonight?

Condors cruise to a 4-1 win over Barracuda

BAKERSFIELD, Calif-The Bakersfield Condors scored four unanswered goals in a commanding 4-1 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Friday evening at Mechanics Bank Arena.

The Condors have won seven games in row, including 2-0 versus San Jose. The Barracuda have have lost three of its past five games.

Bakersfield (7-5-0-0) opened the scoring early in the first period. Seth Griffith set up Adam Cranknell on the left wing and Cracknell buried a wrist shot past ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his third goal of the season at the 6:29 mark.

The Condors doubled its lead while short-handed. James Hamblin carried the puck into the ‘Cuda zone where he split two defenders and sent a back pass over to Cracknell who then returned the favor back to Hamblin and he went top-shelf with a wrist shot past Melnichuk for his second goal of the season at the 14:10 mark.

Despite starting the game 7-0 on the shot clock, San Jose’s chances were thwarted away by Condors goalie Stuart Skinner.

“I thought Stu (Skinner) was a rock early for us when we needed him,” said Condors head coach Jay Woodcroft. “Allowed us to work out way into the game. It’s not always going to feel pretty, it’s not always going to feel nice. Learning how to win is a skill.”

Bakersfield extended its lead to 3-0 on the power play early in the second period. Cooper Maordy sent a cross ice pass over to Tyler Benson, who then sent a backdoor pass over to Luke Esposito and he finished off the tic-tac-toe play with his fifth goal of the season at the 3:47 mark.

“We’re making a lot better decisions with the puck. We’re playing with our legs. We’re checking hard. That’s creating offense, making the other team tired,” Marody said regarding his team’s winning streak.

The middle frame didn’t have as many scoring chances as in the first period. Both teams combined for only 12 shots in the period.

The Condors scored its fourth unanswered goal early in the third period. Benson recorded his second assist of the game when he centered a pass from behind the net out to Marody and he snapped home a wrist shot past Melnichuk for his ninth goal of the season at the 4:19 mark.

San Jose (5-4-2-0) broke up Skinner’s shutout bid halfway through the final period. Alexander True cleaned up the rebound of a Jaycob Magna shot when lifted a backhander past Skinner for his third goal of the season at the 10:53 mark.

Skinner finished 21 saves on 22 shots to earn the victory. Melnichuk made 20 saves on 24 shots in the losing effort,

GAME NOTES: San Jose went 0-for-2 on the power play. Bakersfield was 1-for-5.

Marody recorded his 100th point in a Condors uniform.

SAN JOSE, Calif—The San Jose Barracuda scored three unanswered goals and then held on to defeat the San Diego Gulls 4-2 on Tuesday evening at Solar4America Ice At San Jose.

San Jose has won three out of their last five games, including two out of three from San Diego. The Gulls have lost four of their past six games.

The ‘Cuda (5-3-2-0) drew first blood in the first 11 seconds of the game.

Christian Jaros fed a pass over to Noah Gregor at the blueline. Gregor made a deke past a Gulls’ defender into the middle of the ice and snapped home a hard wrist shot past Gulls’ goalie Lukas Dostal for his first goal of the season.

San Jose out shot San Diego 10-7 after the opening 20 minutes.

The Barracuda extended its lead with two goals in a two-minute span to begin the second period. Gregor skated in from the right wing before centering a pass back up to Fredrik Handemark and buried a wrist shot far side past Dostal for his third goal of the season at the 2:28 mark. It was also Gregor’s first assist of the season.

San Jose made it 3-0 when a San Diego turnover in the neutral zone proved costly to the visiting team. Handemark brought the puck into the Gulls zone and gave it up to Evan Weinger with a rink wide pass. Weinger found Jayden Halbgewachs down low where he slid a backhander past Dostal for his fourth goal of the season at the 4:41 mark.

San Diego (9-6-0-0) got on the scoreboard with under a minute left in the middle frame on the power play. Sam Carrick sent a cross ice pass over to Kodie Curran who blasted a one-timer top-shelf past Cuda

On the Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 Len, after losing three straight games the San Jose Sharks (9-11-3) looked like they tightened down the defense despite getting behind early 2-0 on Monday night against the St Louis Blues (14-8-2).

#2 The defense played a big enough role for San Jose that allowed them to tie the score at 2-2 in the second and third periods with a goal a piece from Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

#3 The Sharks in their last few games have been getting goal scoring help from their defencemen and Vlasic’s goal on Monday night no exception.

#4 Evander Kane can come out and get one in the back of the net and he didn’t waste anytime on Monday night 41 seconds in the overtime and scored the game winner.

#5 The Sharks open up back to back games in Anaheim this Friday and Saturday. The Anaheim Ducks (7-12-6) have lost five of their last six games this is a team that has been struggling will this give the Sharks an opportunity to take advantage of the Ducks?

The Gulls made the ‘Cuda pay once again for it’s fifth trip to the sinbin. Andrew Poturalski sent a shot-pass to a wide open Sam Carrick who tapped home the puck right in front of the crease for his fifth goal of the season at the 16:36 mark.

Jaycob Megna scored an empty netter from his own defensive zone with 30 seconds left to ice the game.

Melnichuk stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced to earn his second victory of the season. Dostal made 21 saves on 24 shots in the losing effort.

Agozzino goal gives Gulls 5-4 overtime win over Barracuda

IRVINE, Calif—Andrew Agozzino scored 1:12 into overtime to give the San Diego Gulls a 5-4 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Saturday evening at FivePoint Arena

Agozzino stripped Ryan Merkley of the puck at the blueline and skated in before sliding the puck past ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for the game winning goal, his fifth of the season.

San Jose has lost two of its last three games. San Diego have won two of their last three games..

San Diego (9-5-0-0) drew first blood in the first period on its second shot of the game. Hunter Drew sneaked a back handed through the five-hole of Melnichuk for his first goal of the season at the 7:19 mark. Benoit-Oliver Groulx and Maxim Golod assisted on the goal.

San Jose (4-3-2-0) answered back under two minutes later. Robbie Russo set up Maxim Letunov in the low slot and he snapped home a wrist shot past Gulls goalie Ollie Eriksson Ek for his first goal of the season at the 8:46 mark. Merkley received the secondary assist.

Letunov had not scored a goal since February 23rd, 2020 when he scored a goal against the Ontario Reign.

San Jose had the ice tilted in its favor as they outshot San Diego 16-5 after the opening 20 minutes.

The Gulls regained the lead early in the second period. Golod skated around the net from left to right and centered a cross ice pass to an open Groulx and he buried a point-blank shot past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 1:51 mark.

The Barracuda scored the equalizer on the power play just under four minutes later. Merkley sent a cross ice pass that bounced off the boards to Zachary Gallant who fired a slap shot that landed top-shelf on the far side past Erikkson Ek for his first career AHL goal at the 5:40 mark.

San Jose out shot San Diego 11-9 in the scoreless third period.

Melnichuk made 23 saves on 26 shots in the losing effort. Eriksson Ek finished with 39 saves on 41 shots to earn the win.

Barracuda shoot down Gulls in 5-1 victory

IRVINE, Calif—The San Jose Barracuda were able to do what no other team had been able to do this season. Beat the San Diego Gulls on their home ice.

The ‘Cuda powered their way with a pair of special team goals en route to a 5-1 victory over their Pacific Division rival on Friday evening at FivePoint Arena. San Diego came into the game 7-0-1 on their home away from home.

San Jose (4-3-1-0) dominated for the entire 60 minutes of the game as they had the ice tilted inside the San Diego zone for the majority of the evening.

The ‘Cuda drew first blood when Evan Weinger scored an unassisted goal at the 11:07 mark of the first period. Weinger intercepted a clearing attempt and looked to center a pass from the right wing when it deflected off a Gulls defender and past Gulls goalie Lukas Dostal for his first goal of the season.

San Diego (8-4-0-0) answered back 17 seconds later when on a delayed penalty call to San Jose, Antoine Morand found Andrew Agozzino on the left slot and he snapped home a wrist shot top-shelf past ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season.

Under five minutes later the Barracuda regained the lead on the power play. Jayden Halbgewachs received a pass on the left wing from Robbie Russo and skated in before sniping home a wrist shot past Dostal near post for his first of two goals on the evening at the 15:39 mark.

San Jose closed out the four-goal opening twenty minutes 65 seconds later. Christian Jaros fired a shot from the right point that Karlis Cukste, who made his AHL debut for San Jose, redirected Jaros’s shot past Dostal for his first career goal at the 16:44 mark

Cukste ,whose natural position is a defenseman, was playing forward for the first time.

San Jose out shot San Diego 14-7 at the end of the first period.

In the second period, San Jose once again controlled the play on the ice as they had held San Diego to just one shot on net in the first 15 minutes of the middle frame.

The ‘Cuda scored its second power play goal of the game when Russo blasted a slap shot from the point where Sasha Chmelevski tipped home past Dostal for his first goal of the season at the 10:23 mark. The Long Beach native had just been sent back down to the Barracuda after playing a game with the parent club Sharks two nights ago.

Halbgewachs finished off the scoring with a late goal in the third period. A turnover inside the Gulls zone led to Fredrik Handemark finding Halbgewachs all alone in the left slot, where he snapped home a wrist shot top-shelf far side for his second goal of the game and third of the season at the 14:28 mark.

Melnichuk had a clean game having to only stop 16 of the 17 shots he faced to earn the win. Dostal finished with 27 saves on 32 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 2-for-4 on the power play. San Diego went 0-for-3.

Condors rout Barracuda in 6-0 shutout win

The Bakersfield Condors used five different goal scorers in a dominating 6-0 shutout victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Wednesday evening at Mechanics Bank Arena.

Bakersfield have won three games in a row after beginning the season losing their first five games. The loss snapped San Jose’s two-game winning streak.

The Condors (3-5-0-0) scored the game’s opening goal early in the first period. James Hamblin fed a pass out to Janis Jaks, who skated in from the right wing and snapped a wrist shot that beat ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk to the blocker side for his first goal of the season at the 5:48 mark.

Bakersfield doubled its lead just over two minutes later when Tyler Benson worked a give-and-go with Luke Esposito from the left slot and Esposito one-timed a shot past the five-hole of Melnichuk for the first of his two goals on the night at the 7:58 mark.

The Condors continued its onslaught scoring on the power play. After a clean faceoff win, Cooper Marody found Adam Cracknell between the faceoff circles and Cracknell fired home a wrist shot past Melnichuk for his second goal of the season at the 10:42 mark.

San Jose (3-3-1-0) had no answer to the Condors’ attack as they were outshot 10-6 in the opening frame.

Esposito scored his second goal of the game and fourth of the season when he redirected Markus Niemelainen’s shot from the left point past Melnichuk at the 3:04 mark of the second period.

Once again, Bakersfield controlled play in the middle frame, outshooting San Jose 12-8.

The Condors sealed the game in the third period with two goals in a span of 33 second at the halfway mark.

Joe Gambardella created a turnover in the ‘Cuda zone and fed a pass over to Jakob Stukel, who buried a wrist shot from the slot into the back of the net for his first goal of the first goal of the season at the 10:57 mark.

Seth Griffin closed out the scoring when he finished off a two-on-one odd man rush from Ostap Safin for his second goal of the season at the 11:30 mark.

Condors goalie Stuart Skinner made 22 saves to earn the shutout win. Melnichulk made 21 saves on 27 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-3 on the power play. Bakersfield went 1-for-2/

Zach Gallant and Max Gildon exchanged fisticuffs in a spirited fight in the first period.

Barracuda take down Reign 3-1, sweep series

SAN JOSE, Calif—The San Jose Barracuda were able to carry the momentum from their previous game against the Ontario Reign and dominated their SoCal rival in a 3-1 victory on Sunday evening at Solar4America Ice.

The ‘Cuda have won two games in a row for the first time this season as they swept the two-game series. Ontario has lost four in a row, including their last five on the road.

San Jose (3-2-1-0) scored the only goal in the first period, a period where they outshot Ontario 11-5.

Ryan Merkley sent a pass up to the point where Brinson Pasichnuk blasted a slap shot that Kuris Gabriel redirected past Reign goalie JF Berube for his second goal in as many nights at the 10:52 mark.

Pasichnuk now has three assists on the season. Merkley received the secondary assist for his second in his pro career.

Ontario (1-8-1-0) scored the equalizer early in the second period. Mikey Eyssimont led a two-on-one rush from the neutral zone. He sent a cross ice pass over to Samuel Fagemo who one-timed a wrist shot past ‘Cuda goalie Josef Korenar for his fourth goal of the season at the 5:10 mark.

The Barracuda took advantage of a delay of game penalty by Sean Durzi midway through the middle frame. Nick DeSimone found Joachim Blichfeld on the left wing and the winger made a cut back move into the middle and snapped home a wrist shot that fooled Berube and into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season at the 11:37 mark.

Alexander True received the secondary assist on the power play goal for San Jose.

San Jose kept Berube busy in the second period as they outshot Ontario 20-9. Berube gave his team a fighting chance in the third period by keeping the deficit to just one goal.

The ‘Cuda controlled play in the third period as they out shot Ontario 17-6. Ontario wasn’t able to generated much of an offensive attack as San Jose had them on their heels for most of the period.

Blichfeld completed his two-goal game with an empty net goal he fired from the right blue line at the 18:27 mark to ice the game for San Jose. Blichfeld has taken over the as the team’s goal leader with his six goals on the season.

Korenar (2-0-0) stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced in earning back to back wins. Berube (0-3-1) was the hard luck loser making 44 saves on 46 shots.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 1-for-1 on the power play. Ontario was 0-for-2.

Barracuda come back from three-goal deficit to beat Reign 6-3

SAN JOSE, Calif. — When you have been off for 13 days, a little rust is expected in your first game back.

The San Jose Barracuda gave up the game’s first three goals, but ended up scoring the final six in a 6-3 victory over the Ontario Reign on Saturday evening at Solar4America Ice.

San Jose had five consecutive games postponed due to a combination of inclement weather and COVID-19 protocols. This was their first game played since February 13th.

In the first period, the ‘Cuda had a tough time shaking off the rust as the Reign scored three goals in a three-minute span to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

First Aidan Dudas scored his second goal of the season at the 8:34 mark. Cameron Gaunce received the only assist on Dudas’ goal.

Quinton Byfield set up Mikey Eyssimont down low and Eyssimont slid the puck past ‘Cuda goalie Josef Korenar for his first goal of the season at the 10:28 mark.

Just over a minute later, Blaine Byron scored a power play goal for Ontario (1-7-1-0) when he tipped in a shot from Blyfield past Korenar for his third goal of the season at the 11:39 mark.

Ontario dominated the opening 20 minutes, outshooting San Jose 14-4.

San Jose (2-2-1-0) began its comeback near the halfway mark of the second period. Kurtis Gabriel centered a pass over to a wide-open Fredrik Handemark and buried home the puck into an open net for the first of his two goals of his AHL career at the 8:33 mark.

The ‘Cuda scored the next three goals in a two-minute span that had the Reign on their heels for the final five minutes of the middle frame.

Joel Kellman finished off a two-on-one odd man rush with a wrist shot that beat Reign goalie Matthew Villalta for an unassisted goal, his first of the season at the 15:32 mark.

After a clean faceoff win, Nick DeSimone fired a slap shot from the right point that Joachim Blichfeld was able to redirect past Villalta for his team leading fourth goal of the game at the 17:02 mark.

30 seconds later, Gabriel completed his “Gordie Howe hat trick” when he skated in from behind the Reign net and tucked home the puck inside the right post for his first goal of the season at the 17:32 mark.

Gabriel, who assisted on Handemark’s goal, also had a spirited fight with Ontario’s Jacob Doty back in the first period.

Reign head coach John Wroblewski pulled Villalta from the game and replaced him with J.F. Berube to start the third period.

San Jose capped off the scoring with two short-handed, empty-net goals at the end of the third period when Ontario pulled Berube for an extra attacker. Antti Suomela scored art the 18:03 mark and Handemark scored his second of the night at the 18:39 mark.

Kornear, who made his season debut, stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced to earn his first win of the season. Villalta made 13 saves on 17 shots suffered the loss. Berube stopped all 13 shots he faced.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-3 on the power play. Ontario was 1-for-6.

Suomela extended his point streak to four games (1G, 3A).

Kellman had his fifth multi-point game of his AHL career.

Gabriel and Jeffery Viel put a team-best nine shots on net.

Blichfeld also extended his point streak to four games (4G, 3A).

San Jose’s four-goal second was the most goals scored in a period this season.

#3 The San Jose Sharks forward Maxime Letunov  and goaltender Josef Korenar joined the Barracuda on Feb 21st. How do you see Letunov coming back from the parent club helping on offense and will Korenar get some starts soon enough.

#4 Cornavirus has played such a huge role in the Barracuda schedule outside of the poor weather conditions they went through in Texas. It canceled three games in Tucson and Thu Feb 25th’s game was canceled when San Jose Shark Tomas Hertl had Covid-19 protocol issues.
