Halbgewachs was able to get behind the Reign defense and sniped home a wrist shot top shelf past Pirak for his second goal of the game and 10th of the season at the 9:10 mark.

SAN JOSE — When a team is rolling, there’s nothing you can do about it.

The high-speed bullet train known as the Ontario Reign continued its remarkable season with a 7-1 onslaught over the San Jose Barracuda on Thursday evening at SAP Center.

San Jose has lost five of its past six games. Ontario is 8-0-1-1 in its past 10 games as they swept the two-game series at the Shark Tank.

Ontario (22-6-3-2) drew first blood in the first minute of the first period. T.J. Tynan made a drop pass to Martin Frk along the right wing and Frk fired a wrist shot to the far side past ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his 19th goal of the season at the 1:05 mark. Frk is tied for first in goal in the AHL.

The Reign didn’t need much time to double its leads. 54 seconds later Sameul Fagemo centered a pass out to Gabriel Vilardi and the Los Angeles Kings former first round draft pick buried a wrist shot top shelf for his ninth goal of the season at the 1:59 mark.

Vilardi has scored a goal in all three games against San Jose this season.

San Jose (14-21-1-0) responded when Evan Weinger won a race to the puck near the goal line. Weinger centered a pass from the behind the end line out to Scott Reedy, who sniped home a wrist shot past Reign goalie Matthew Villalta to the short side for his team leading 18th goal of the season at the 12:26 mark.

The Barracuda had two-on-zero short-handed scoring chance in the opening minute of the second period. Weinger and John Leonard had a chance to even the game, but both of their attempts were stoned away by Villalta.

“We had our opportunities, they had theirs, they finished in the two games here,” said ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer. “They outscored us 11-2. We hit a couple of posts but it’s just not enough.”

Ontario regained their two-goal lead past the halfway mark of the second period. Aiden Dudas fired a shot a net that bounced out into the middle off a save by Melnichuk. Austin Wagner cleaned up the rebound for his eighth goal of the season at the 11:05 mark.

The Reign padded their lead early in the third period. Tyler Madden sent a pass to Helge Grans along the right wing. The 19-year-old defenseman rifled home a wrist shot past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 3:45 mark.

Ontario scored its fifth goal of the game on the power play at the halfway mark of the period. Tynan set up Vilardi in the slot and Vilardi blasted a one-timer past Melnichuk for his second goal of the game and 10th of the season at the 10:50 mark.

The Reign kept their foot on the gas pedal with a two-goal scoring burst in a 50 second span. Tynan scored his eighth of the season at the 14:14 mark and then Fagemo got in on the scoring party with his 11th of the season at the 15:04 mark.

“In the third it was kind of like man…it was one of those things where they kept shooting and it was going in,” Sommer said.

Villata finished a brilliant performance stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced. Melnichuk had a night (especially in the third period) he would like to forget as he made 21 saves on 28 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-5 on the power play. Ontario was 1-for-3.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Vilardi 2) Tynan 3) Fagemo

Reign’s early rise defeats Barracuda 4-1

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The coffee was still percolating when the opening faceoff was dropped.

The Ontario Reign made the most out of a 10:00am start as they defeated the San Jose Barracuda 4-1 on Wednesday morning at SAP Center.

The early start was due in part to the first ‘Cuda Classroom Day promotion of the season despite no kids being allowed to attend due to the ongoing Covid protocols in Santa Clara County.

San Jose have lost four of its past five games. Ontario is 7-0-1-1 in its past nine games.

Ontario (21-6-3-2) drew first blood early into the first period. Marcus Phillips picked a perfect time to send a wrist shot through a sea of traffic in front ‘Cuda goalie Sam Harvey. Phillips’ shot sneaked into the back of the net for his first goal of the season at the 2:12 mark.

It was Phillips first goal in 26 games and his first point in 22 games.

San Jose (14-20-1-0) answered back over two minutes later. Jayden Halbgewachs sent a pass back up to the point over to Patrick Holway. The rookie defenseman sent a wrist shot that hit off the top off the net and then off of the back of Reign goalie Lukas Parik for his second goal of the season at the 4:23 mark.

“I was actually pretty surprised that it went in,” said Holway. I think Hobbsy (Halbgewachs) yell at me to shoot it and I shot it. It’s not how you draw it up, but you take what you can get. I guess I had some luck with me today”

The Reign regained the lead scoring on its first power play opportunity. T.J. Tynan set up Gabriel Vilardi in the slot and Vilardi blasted a one-timer past Harvey for his eighth goal of the season at the 7:12 mark.

Tynan, who leads the Reign in points and is second in the AHL, has 19 assists on the power play in just 26 games.

San Jose outshot Ontario 14-12 in the opening 20 minutes.

The second period was scoreless despite the Barracuda peppering 19 shots on goal against Parik. The Reign killed off a late penalty in the middle frame when Brayden Burke was called for tripping at the 15:36 mark.

“Honestly I thought we played pretty good,” said ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer. “We out chanced them I believe 24-20 for the (whole) game, which we haven’t had that many chances in a while. So, we generated some offense, we just didn’t have any finish.”

Ontario scored an insurance goal late in the third period. Christian Wolanin sent a home run pass up to center ice to Austin Wagner from his own zone. Wagner raced in from the left sideline and beat Harvey with a backhand shot for his seventh goal of the season at the 13:24 mark.

“They’re (Ontario) so explosive. You give them a little bit of space and they’re going to make you pay like on that last goal,” Sommer said.

Martin Frk scored an empty netter with 1:37 remaining in the game to seal the deal for Ontario.

Parik had a stellar game stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced to earn the victory. Harvey made 28 saves on 31 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-2 on the power play. Ontario was 1-for-2.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Vilardi 2) Phillps 3) Holway

SAN JOSE — SAP Center let the dogs in. The San Jose Barracuda showed their bite was as big as its bark.

The ‘Cuda rebounded from a tough loss one night earlier and played a full 60-minute game in a 5-2 victory over the Bakersfield Condors on Sunday evening at The Shark Tank.

The Barracuda had a combined promotion night with Hockey Fights Cancer and its Paws & Pucks celebration where fans were able to bring their best friends into the arena.

Both human and canine saw San Jose snap its three-game losing streak. In the process Bakersfield had its six-game winning streak end.

It was a complete 180 from last night’s game where the Barracuda squandered a two-goal lead and lost the game in the third period. Tonight, San Jose scored two goals in the final frame to ensure they would not have a fourth loss in a row.

“Don’t sit back and get after it,” said ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer on his message to his team during the second intermission. “Blichy’s (Blichfeld) goal was big, and Johnny (Leonard) scores off the PP (power play) that kind of cements it for us.”

San Jose (14-19-1-0) drew first blood early in the first period. Jake McGrew had a give and go with Zach Gallant inside the Condors zone. Gallant’s shot on net was initially saved by Condor’s goalie, and former San Jose Shark, Alex Stalock. McGrew picked up the rebound and beat Stalock with a wrist shot for his sixth goal of the season at the 5:39 mark.

Kyle Topping was issued a five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing Philip Broberg at center ice with 6:49 remaining in the opening frame. Broberg left the ice on his own power and returned to the game.

However, penalties by Devin Brosseau and Luke Esposito trimmed Bakersfield power play opportunity to just 54 seconds which San Jose was able to kill off.

San Jose extended its lead with two goals scored in a 15 second span early in the second period. The ‘Cuda doubled its lead on the power play when Artemi Kniazev fired a shot on net stopped by Stalock. Scotty Reedy crashed the crease and cleaned up the rebound for his team leading 17th goal of the season at the 1:21 mark.

Reedy leads the AHL in power play goals with 10.

On the ensuing shift ‘Cuda defenseman Mark Alt sent in a shot-pass from the right point and Timur Ibragimov tipped the puck past Stalock for his first career AHL goal at the 1:36 mark.

“Timur (Ibragimov) was in a good spot and I just tried to get a nice hard pass to him so he could deflect it wherever he wanted,” Alt said.

Bakersfield (14-8-3-3) answered back with an even strength goal near the halfway mark of the middle frame. A turnover by the ‘Cuda inside their own zone led to Dylan Holloway centering a pass to Tim Schaller who beat Barracuda goalie Zachary Sawchenko with a one-timer for his sixth goal of the season at the 7:42 mark.

The Condors cut their deficit to one late in the middle frame. Esposito won a faceoff back to Raphael Lavoie in the right slot and he blasted a one-timer past Sawchenko for his seventh goal of the season at the 18:53 mark.

San Jose scored an insurance goal early in the third period. Jayden Halbgewachs intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and led a two-on-one odd man rush with Joachim Blichfeld. Halbgewachs sent a rink wide pass to Blichfeld who snapped home a one-timer past Stalock for his 14th goal of the season at the 4:04 mark.

Blichfeld has scored in three consecutive games, his longest of the season.

The Barracuda padded its lead just under two minutes later with its second power play goal. John Leonard went coast-to-coast from his own zone up the middle into the Condors zone. After the puck was poke checked away from him, Leonard quickly regained possession and fired a wrist shot to the far side past a surprised Stalock for his eighth goal of the season at the 6:31 mark. Cole Moberg picked up his second helper of the game with the only assist on Leonard’s goal.

Leonard has three goals in his past two games.

Sawchenko, who made his first start since December 17, 2021, finished the game stopping 35 of the 37 shots he faced to pick up the victory. Stalock made 25 saves on 30 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 2-for-4 on the power play. Bakersfield was 0-for-4.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Kniazev 2) Sawchenko 3) Moberg

UP NEXT: San Jose continues its homestand when they host the Ontario Reign on Wednesday at 10:00am at SAP Center.

by Marko Ukalovic

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Bakersfield has become a house of horrors for the San Jose Barracuda.

The Condors scored four unanswered goals to overcome a two-goal deficit in a 4-3 victory over their Pacific Division rival on Saturday evening at Mechanics Bank Arena.

San Jose has three games in a row and have lost their last eight games in Bakersfield. The third place Condors have won six games in a row and have points in 11 straight games.

Neither was able to find the back of the net in the first period. Each team had a power play opportunity, but neither capitalized on their chance.

Bakersfield out shot San Jose 14-11 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Barracuda (13-19-1-0) broke the seal early in the second period. Nick Merkley found a trailing John Leonard open in the slot. Leonard one-timed a wrist shot top shelf just underneath the cross bar for his sixth goal of the season at the 2:02 mark.

San Jose doubled its lead just over four minutes later. Patrick Holway skated in from the left wing and sent a shot on net that was initially saved by Condors goalie Olivier Rodrigue. Joachim Blichfeld cleaned up the rebound for his 13th goal of the season at the 6:32 mark.

Bakersfield (14-8-3-3) cut the Barracuda lead in half just passed the halfway mark of the middle frame. Dylan Holloway threaded the needle with a pass between two San Jose defenders that sprung James Hamblin on a breakaway. Hamblin’s backhander beat ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his ninth goal of the season at the 11:41 mark.

Hamblin has been on fire of late with his fourth goal in three games for Bakersfield.

The Condors evened the score early in the third period thanks to two lucky bounces. Devin Brousseau collected the puck after bounced over the stick of Holway. Brousseau’s centering pass caromed off the leg of Merkley past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 5:30 mark.

Bakersfield gained its first lead just over a minute later. Brousseau centered a pass from behind the net out to Vincent Desharnais who one-timed a wrist shot past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 6:35 mark.

Desharnais has five points during his four-game point steak.

The Condors scored an insurance goal on the power play near the halfway mark of the final frame. Philip Broberg fed a pass over to Adam Cranknell and the veteran Condor rifled a slap shot past Melnichuk to the short side for his ninth goal of the season at the 9:03 mark.

San Jose scored a power play goal with 1:45 remaining in the final frame when Leonard scored his second goal of the game. Artemi Kniazev found Leonard open in the right faceoff circle and he buried a wrist shot for his seventh goal of the season.

It was Leonard’s first multi-goal game of his AHL career.

Rodrigue finished the game stopping 31 of the 34 shots he faced in earning the victory. Melnichuk made 42 saves on 46 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-4 on the power play. Bakersfield was 1-for-3.

Krystof Hrabik was suspended 30 games by the AHL for making a racial gesture towards Tucson Roadrunners forward Boko Imama during the teams’ January 12th game in San Jose. Hrabik was immediately removed from all team activities.

On the Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 The San Jose Sharks (21-18-2) coming into tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning have won six out of their last 11 games and have played for the most part .500 hockey in the last nine games going 4-5.

#2 The Sharks in their last game against the Seattle Kraken (12-23-4) at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle took a one goal 3-2 loss. It was the Sharks third loss in four games and head coach Bob Boughner is hoping that the Sharks could get some traction and pick up some wins.

#3 Len, things started out promising to start the last Thursday’s game when Tomas Hertl scored in the first 38 seconds of the game but it was the Kraken’s Carson Sousy who help deliver the goods scoring twice and Carne Jarnkrok scored a third period goal which turned out to be the game winner.

#4 The Sharks minor league affiliate the San Jose Barracuda Krystof Hrabik on Jan 12th made a apelike gesture toward the Tucson Roadrunners Boko Imama as Hrabik has been suspended for 30 games. It’s not the first time the Imama had been racially taunted he was called a racial slur in the 2020 season by the Ontario Reign’s Brandon Manning.

#5 Is the Hrabik gesture any reflection on the Barracuda’s position on minorities and people of color in the game when they have not used and have all but erased Evander Kane from their roster or the other side of the argument that Kane’s case has nothing to do with the Barracuda being racially biased?

Gulls take down Barracuda 3-2 with late goal in the third period

The San Diego Gulls Alex Limoges (12) scored the game winning goal against the San Jose Barracuda on Tue Jan 18, 2022 at SAP Center in San Jose (file photo by San Diego Gulls)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — Squandered opportunities will come back to haunt you.

Alex Limoges scored the eventual game winning goal with 3:39 left in regulation to give the San Diego Gulls a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Tuesday evening at SAP Center.

Greg Printz threaded a pass that got behind San Jose’s defense. Limoges waited for ‘Cuda goalie Sam Harvey to bite before sliding the puck around him for his sixth goal of the season at the 16:21 mark of the third period.

Earlier in the final frame, San Jose had its second five-on-three opportunity with 7:15 remaining but they failed to cash in as San Diego was able to kill off both penalties.

“I don’t think we had a lot of good looks on it,” said ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer. “I think we were too much around the perimeter trying to set up plays, instead of just bombing the puck (on net).”

San Jose has lost three out its last four games. San Diego have won two games in a row.

Each team were without one of their top forwards. San Jose did not have the services of Sasha Chmelevski (17 points) and Jacob Perreault (18 points) was not in the lineup for San Diego.

San Jose (13-18-1-0) drew first blood near the halfway point of the first period. Evan Weinger centered a pass in front of the crease where an unchecked Jake McGrew one-timed a point-blank shot past Gulls goalie Francis Marotte for his fifth goal of the season at the 9:26 mark.

The Barracuda had the ice tilted in their favor in the opening 20 minutes as they outshot the Gulls 15-8.

San Diego (12-13-2-0) answered back with an even strength goal early in the second period. A turnover inside the ‘Cuda zone led to Benoit-Oliver Groulx sent a cross ice pass out the left point over to Trevor Carrick. The former Barracuda defenseman blasted a slap shot past ‘Cuda goalie Sam Harvey for his third goal of the season at the 5:25 mark.

The Gulls gained its first lead on a delayed penalty call. Lucas Elvenes was being cross-checked down to the ice, the puck reached Bryce Kindopp who used a backhand shot to put the puck past the five-hole of Harvey for his fourth goal of the season at the 13:01 mark.

“(There) just wasn’t enough desperation in our game for 60 minutes. We played 45 minutes of it. But with the team we have right now, that’s not going to win (games),” Sommer said.

The Barracuda took advantage on its first five-on-three power play opportunity when they evened the game with 10 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Joachim Blichfeld’s initial shot was blocked. Jayden Halbgewachs quickly gave it back to Blichfeld and the Danish native rifled a wrist shot top shelf over the shoulder of Marotte for his 12th goal of the season.

Groulx sealed the deal with an empty net goal with three seconds left, his third of the season.

“Some stupid decisions,” said Blichfeld explaining on the team ended with a loss. “And some bad power play at the end. We gotta execute on those (opportunities).”

Marotte (2-1-1), who made just his sixth AHL appearance, finished the evening stopping 38 of the 40 shots he faced to earn the victory. Harvey (2-3-0), who made his third consecutive start, made 19 saves on 22 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-6 on the power play. San Diego was 0-for-3.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Limoges 2) Marotte 3) Blichfeld
