After a slow start San Jose came back against the Silver Knights to grab a victory on the road by a 4-1 score.

The PK unit for the Barracuda had to get going early as just 4:59 into the first William Eklund took a holding penalty.

Thankfully for San Jose they were able to kill the penalty though not long after the kill they had to go on the penalty kill again.

This time Henderson’s PP unit came through as Lukas Cormier scored his sixth goal of the season to make it 1-0.

At the 14:07 mark Luke Johnson and Jermaine Loewen dropped the gloves getting the fans riled up.

Cormier’s goal ended up being the only goal of the first with the shots finishing in favor of San Jose 9-6.

The second period got off to a slow start with both teams exchanging shots on goal.

11:40 into the second though Sheldon Rempal took a holding penalty giving San Jose their second power play of the game.

On the power play Derrick Pouliot ripped a shot from the point that Kyle Criscuolo expertly deflected past Jiri Patera to tie the game up at 1-1.

The teams fought to a tie at the end of the second with the shots still favoring San Jose 20-11.

In the third it wouldn’t take long for Barracuda’s offense to strike as they had a rush going the other way.

On the rush Martin Kaut slung a pass to a waiting Andrew Agozzino who sniped a shot past Patera to make it 2-1 in favor of San Jose.

Later on in the third Kaut found himself on a breakaway but mishandled the puck forcing him to stickhandle wide.

Instead of giving up on the play Kaut turned back towards the net and scored on Patera getting his first goal with the Barracuda.

The Silver Knights pulled their goalie to try to get back into the game but C.J. Suess scored on the empty cage to make it 4-1.

The shots at the end of the game favored San Jose 30-28.

The first of back to backs against Henderson did not go San Jose’s way as they lost in a shootout 3-2.

The goaltending matchup in tonights game was between Eetu Makiniemi and Laurent Brossoit.

As far as physicality things picked up quickly as just 3:16 in Jeffrey Viel and Kyle Marino dropped the gloves.

Less than ten minutes later the offense kicked in for Henderson as Colt Conrad intercepted a pass and sniped one past Makiniemi to make it 1-0.

That goal ended up being the only one of the period as the shots finished at 13-10 in favor of the Barracuda.

Less than ten minutes into the second San Jose tied it up as a Henderson defender turned it over behind his own net and Andrew Agozzino capitalized on it.

After the goal San Jose took back-to-back high-sticking penalties though both were killed off by the PK unit.

The shots at the end of the second finished in favor of Henderson at 24-19.

Henderson’s offense got off to a quick start in the third as just 2:53 in Gage Quinney scored on a power play to get his 18th of the season.

Later on in the third Spencer Foo took a penalty for holding putting San Jose on the power play.

The PP unit stuck quickly for the Barracuda as a pretty passing play lead to Agozzino scoring his second goal of the game.

That goal ended up being enough to force it to OT with the shots finishing at the end of the third at 29-26.

In overtime San Jose ended up controlling most of the play registering three shots on goal but were not able to score.

With no goal coming in overtime the shootout ended up being required as San Jose elected to shoot first.

All of San Jose’s shooters missed and Brendan Brisson scored for Henderson to get them the win in the shootout.

The San Jose Barracuda had lots to be excited about on Fri Jan 20, 2023 at Tech CU Arena matching a season high six goals against the visiting San Diego Gulls (photo by the San Jose Barracuda)

On the San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko:

#1 The San Jose Barracuda (17-21-0-1) had a tremendous game last Friday shutting out the San Diego Gulls (11-28-0-0) 6-0 at Tech CU Arena in San Jose. The Barracuda got two goals from Kyle Criscuolo in his first game with San Jose.

#2 The Barracuda also got great goaltending Eetu Makiniemi stopping 20 San Diego shots for San Jose’s fourth shutout this season.

#3 The Barracuda’s six goals matched a season high and it was a performance that Barracuda head coach John McCarthy would hope to be a break out for the offense the rest of this season.

#4 San Diego has been a struggling team with some 17 games below .500 and allowing the six goals. Was this a matter of the Barracuda catching fire and showing that they do have a superior offense or they just met an opponent that’s having trouble with their defense.

#5 The Barracuda return to action Wednesday night to face the Henderson Silver Knights for the first of three road games. The Barracuda host the Abbottsford Canucks when they return to San Jose Feb 3.

Dominant performance by Barracuda propel them over Gulls 6-0

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE – On bay country night at Tech CU arena the Barracuda came out and played some great hockey beating the Gulls by a impressive 6-0 score.

It was a battle between two of the weaker teams in the pacific division. With the Barracuda currently sitting at seventh and Gulls sitting last in the division.

These are also two teams that lead the division in penalty minutes something that would come in to play pretty quickly in this game.

The first period got off to an exciting start for San Jose as they controlled most of the play.

Newcomer Kyle Criscuolo decided to endear himself to the Cuda fans by taking the puck right to the net and deking out Lukas Dostal to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.

After the goal San Diego took a penalty for hooking at the 10:48 mark of the first period. However the PK unit for the Gulls killed it off and kept the game close.

Not to long after the penalty things got feisty as Travis Howe and Montana Onyebuchi dropped the gloves.

Less than two minutes later the parade to the penalty box continued as three penalties were all dished out at once. Two going to the Gulls one for unsportsmanlike conduct and cross-checking and one Barracuda player went to the box as well.

Certainly there was no love lost between the two teams as the first period ended 1-0.

The shots at the end of the period finished 13-4 in favor of San Diego.

Not skipping a beat the second period just as well for San Jose as just 1:41 into the period the Andrew Agozzino scored his 11th goal of the season making it 2-0.

The goal mainly happened because of William Eklund who made it a beautiful cut behind the net and fed a pass to Agozzino who easily tapped the pass into the net.

The extra curriculars between the two teams was not over as Will Riedell and Dmitry Osipov also duked it out.

It did take a while for the grey and teal to strike again but 16:46 into the second Darren Brady did just that scoring his second of the season.

This time Max Veronneau made a nice pass across the ice to a streaking Brady who ripped a shot past Dostal to make it 3-0.

The end of the second was an interesting one with four misconducts being handed out, two to each team.

At the end of the second the shots still favored San Jose at 19-11.

The solid starts to periods continued for the Barracuda as a little over five minutes in the newcomer struck again as Criscuolo tallied his seventh goal of the campaign.

His second goal of the game was a little weirder as Veronneau fired a shot wide the puck rebounded off the boards and Criscuolo stuffed it in past Dostal.

The offensive wave of San Jose could not be stopped as just a few minutes later All-Star Thomas Bordeleau tipped home a great feed from Tristen Robins to make it 5-0.

Artemi Kniazev a little later saw fit to add on sniping one from the wing making it 6-0 and tallying his second of the year.

Not long after the goal another three misconducts were given out two to the Gulls and one to San Jose.

That brought the total penalty minutes between the two teams up to 125 penalty minutes on the night.

Kniazev’s goal did end up being the last goal of the game as Eetu Makiniemi held on to finish with a 20 save shutout.

The shots at the end of the game finished in favor of San Jose at 29-20.

The three stars of the game were 1st: Kyle Criscuolo 2nd: C.J. Suess 3rd: Eetu Makiniemi

San Jose’s next game will be on the road against the Silver Knights on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — Derrick Pouliot picked a great time to score his first goal of the season.

Pouliot’s goal early in the third period gave the San Jose Barracuda an insurance goal as they held on to beat the Abbotsford Canucks 3-2 on Sunday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose split the two games series with Abbotsford and snapped its three-game losing streak. Abbotsford had its three-game winning streak end.

Pouliot knocked down a pass from Tristan Robins and skated down the left wing before he deposited a wrist shot top shelf to the short side past Canucks goalie Jake Kupsky at the 5:20 mark. Pouliot’s first goal of the season was also the Barracuda’s third power play goal of the game.

San Jose (16-21-0-2-34 points) drew first blood on the power play early in the opening frame. Robins set up William Eklund in the right slot and Eklund blasted a one-timer past Kusky for his 11th goal of the season at the 6:09 mark.

The Barracuda doubled its lead 65 seconds into the second period with its second power play goal. This time it was Thomas Bordeleau setting up Eklund’s second goal on the man advantage. Eklund once again was at the right place at the right time and beat Kupsky with another one-timer from the right slot for his 12th goal of the season.

Abbotsford (22-11-1-1-46 points) cut the ‘Cuda lead in half with a power play goal late in the middle frame. Phil Di Guiseppe beat ‘Cuda goalie Eetu Makiniemi with a one-time from the right slot for his ninth goal of the season at the 14:05 mark.

Vasily Podkolzin gathered in a loose puck and snapped home a wrist shot past Makiniemi for his fourth goal of the season two minutes after Pouliot’s goal.

Rough second period leads to loss for Barracuda against the Canucks 5-1

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE – In Derrick Pouliot’s return to the lineup San Jose came out flat at home and lost to Abbotsford by a final of 5-1.

The game took a little bit to get going with the first big play happening 6:24 into the game.

Wyatt Kalynuk threw a shot from the point towards the net and Kyle Rau perfectly deflected it to get his eight goal of the season and make it 1-0.

Less than five minutes after the goal San Jose took a penalty to give the Canucks a chance to go up two. However, as ended up being the story for the rest of the period the penalty kill was effective and killed off the power play.

The lone goal from Rau was the only goal of the period with the shots at the end of the period favoring San Jose 9-7.

To kick things off in the second Adam Raska and Guillaume Brisbois dropped the gloves just 1:09 into the period.

Seemingly feeling motivated by their teammates 5:53 into the second both Patrick Holway and Marc Gatcomb fought as well.

The second fight felt like it motivated the Barracuda and only a couple minutes after the fight Jeffrey Viel scored his seventh goal of the season.

It was a play right off the face-off were the puck came straight back to Viel and he ripped it past Artūrs Šilovs to tie the game up at one.

Only 45 second later though the Canucks had a response ready on a five-on-three power play as Linus Karlsson banged home his 11th goal on the campaign.

Later on that same power play which was now a five-on-four Phil Di Giuseppe one timed home a shot from the wing to extend the lead to two.

After the three straight goals from the Canucks the Barracuda were clearly reeling looking for a response.

13:02 into the second Abbotsford saw fit to tack on as San Jose made a terrible turnover behind their own net. On the turnover Danila Klimovich scored his eight goal of the season making the score 4-1.

Klimovich’s goal was the last of the period as the shots in total now favored the Canucks at 21-18.

The third period offered a major opportunity for San Jose to come back as their power play unit was given multiple chances.

In total the Barracuda had three power plays and could not score on a single one ending the night at an abysmal 0/6 on the PP.

With the score at 4-1 San Jose decided to pull their goalie but Arshdeep Baines scored on the empty cage to get his fourth goal of the season and essentially end the game.

At the end of the night Abbotsford lead in shots at 29-26.

The three stars of the game were: 1st: Christian Wolanin 2nd: Artūrs Šilovs 3rd: Jeffrey Viel

The Barracuda will continue their home stand tomorrow were they will look for redemption against these same Canucks at 1 p.m.

Third period collapse by Barracuda gives Gulls victory 5-2

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

On the last game of a four game road stand the Barracuda fell flat in the third period and lost to the San Diego Gulls by a score of 5-2.

The game started off promising enough for San Jose as 4:49 in Jeffrey Viel scored his sixth goal of the season assisted by Adam Raska and Darren Brady. Making it 1-0 Barracuda on top early on in the contest.

After that goal San Jose went on the power play twice but failed to convert on both opportunities.

12:44 into the first William Eklund found himself on a two-on-one and buried a wrist shot home past Lukas Dostal to make it 2-0 San Jose.

That was the last goal of the period as the Barracuda dominated the period leading in shots as well by a wide margin of 14-3.

San Diego in the second came out with a new sense of determination and just 2:15 into the period they made the Barracuda pay.

From an awkward shot off the right wing boards Pavol Regenda sneaked his seventh goal of the season past goalie Eetu Makiniemi.

A little later in the second period a surprising event occurred when Eklund fought Glenn Gawdin resulting in Eklund being ejected from the game for instigation.

On the ensuing power play the Gulls scored as Benoit-Olivier Groulx tipped home a pass from Brayden Tracey tying the game at two.

There were a few more penalties between the two team though no more goal were scored in the period.

The shots at the end of the first favored San Jose 22-16.

In the third period both teams continued to load up on penalty minutes while the power play units continued to go cold.

Later on in the period on a wrap around feed Hunter Drew deposited the puck into an empty cage to give the Gulls a late lead.

San Jose pulled their goalie to try to come back but two empty net goals by Rocco Grimaldi dashed those hopes.

Putting the score at a final of 5-2 in favor of San Diego.

The shots at the end of the game favored San Jose at 31-24.

Barracuda comeback but lose in shootout against Firebirds 3-2

Photo courtesy of San Jose Barracuda Twitter. Barracuda forward Jasper Weatherby battles on the face-off against a Firebirds player.

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

In their second game in a row against the Firebirds the Barracuda were down 2-0 but came back only to lose in the shootout by a final of 3-2.

Early on in the game both teams took roughing penalties resulting in a four-on-four with Coachella Valley maintaining most of the possession.

No goals were scored during the two minutes however, on a rush going back the other way Cameron Hughes slid the puck across to a streaking Jesper Froden who scored on a wide open net.

With game 1-0 the Firebirds continued to press at one point in the period out shooting the Barracuda 12-2.

On the 13th shot of that period for Coachella Valley Kole Lind on a nice feed from Brogan Rafferty one timed that shot home to make it 2-0.

While the scoring ended there in the first the shots continued to pile on as by the end of the first the shots favored the Firebirds 18-6.

After the first which saw Coachella Valley dominate the second period got off to a much slower start. With each team only getting a few shots.

At the 14:10 mark the Barracuda were given a chance to comeback as Lind took a slashing penalty. San Jose’s power play though was unsuccessful which that ended up being their last power play of the game.

Less than five minutes after the PP unit got off the ice Adam Raska fired a shot from the point that was tipped by Luke Johnson making it a one goal game. It was Johnson’s seventh goal of the season and that late in the period it seemed to give San Jose a little bit of life.

The Barracuda did not end the period on a great note though as Will Riedell and Montana Onyebuchi took penalties just a little bit apart.

Heading into the third on a five-on-three San Jose needed a big kill and got just that as the Firebirds walked away empty handed.

The rest of the third similar to the second was a close checking game with not a ton of opportunities either way.

Jasper Weatherby did take a cross-checking penalty but once again the penalty kill came up big keeping it a one goal game.

With the score still close and San Jose needing a goal Aaron Dell was pulled with just 1:30 left in the game.

30 seconds later Thomas Bordeleau one timed a shot pass across to Danil Gushchin who slid in back door and deflected the pass in off of his skate and scored tying the game up at two.

In dramatic fashion the Barracuda had tied and officially forced the game into overtime.

The overtime period much like the rest of the game was close with a total of two shots taken by each team.

Neither of those shots ended up going in meaning a shootout was next.

The shootout was even more drama filled with both teams goalies standing on their heads and making save after save.

It took until the seventh round before finally Lind scored putting the pressure on San Jose.

William Eklund shot next and was stopped by Joey Daccord who emphatically celebrated as Coachella Valley had won the game 3-2.

The shots at the end of the game were 36-22 in favor of the Firebirds.

The three stars of the game were: 1st: Kole Lind 2nd: Jesper Froden 3rd: Joey Daccord

San Jose’s next game will be on the road this time in San Diego on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
