San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Cracks showing as the Giants fall eight off the pace with a dimming postseason

On the San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris:

The last time the Giants used a position player to pitch was 27 years ago. Utility man Chase d’Arnaud pitched a scoreless eighth. The Reds, who swept the series, started three pitchers with 4.46, 5.19. 5.04 ERAs and the Giants could only get four runs to the Reds’ 11.

The Giants’ Joe Panik, who has six hits in two games, is one of the few Giants hitting. The Giants open a four-game series against the Mets Monday night at Citi Field. The Mets are 14 1/2 out of first in the NL East. The Giants are now eight games out of first and their chances are sinking for their playoff hopes.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Lami: After a physical scrimmage, 49ers and Texans ready to rumble in second preseason game for jobs

On the 49ers podcast with Joe:

This week, it got physical between the San Francisco 49ers and the Houston Texans during their scrimmages. The players were literally fighting for jobs as the two teams face each other this Saturday in Houston. 49ers quarterback CJ Beathard worked hard in camp this year and in his first preseason game in his bid to make second string quarterback. He threw 10-for-20 for 181 yards and one pick last Friday at Levi’s Stadium in the 49ers’ first preseason game.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had his watchful eye on a host of young players. For example. running back Joe Williams who 11 carries and 27 yards and Raheem Mostent, who had eight carries and 57 yards. Wide receiver Victor Bolden Jr had three catches for 54 yards and Richie James four catchers for 46 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers play in South Texas this Saturday. Expect hot weather for this second preseason game as both teams are coming off physical scrimmages and trying to win a job.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Giants and Dodgers meet again end of September–will there be more bad blood?

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

How about Giants outfielder Andrew McCutchen on Wednesday night? He hit a three-run home run that gave the Giants a lead that would soon end in a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But, regardless, he is finding his swing, so look for more from McCutchen during the Cincinnati Reds series starting tonight.

In the rivalry series in LA, things got hot and somewhat out of control in the seventh inning of Tuesday night’s game in which the Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig missed a pitch and tossed and caught his bat when Giants catcher Nick Hundley said something to Puig. Both players ended up in each other faces and Puig shoved Hundley. That emptied the benches and both Puig and Hundley were ejected. Michael will see if this a continued trend between the two teams?

Major League Baseball offices are sifting out what discipline will be given to Hundley and Puig. Puig was suspended for two games and fined. Hundley was also fined. Unless Puig appeals, he’ll begin the suspension today.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips and Michael Duca: Happy Days! Giants have now landed on the .500 mark 25 times this season

On the Giants podcast with Morris and Michael:

The San Francisco Giants have landed 25 times on the .500 mark this season and they are 61-61 after arriving the .500 mark that 25th time on Thursday night in a 12-inning, 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium. Which means they’ve been either one above or one game below, they haven’t been either four games above or under at all or at any point in the season.

The very definition of mediocrity and they are still in the pennant race. This division is still winnable even the wild card is a little bit difficult to obtain, but no one has run away with it; but the Giants are at the bottom of that list in order for them to move up with 40 games left, they’re going to have to win 30 of them.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Puig and Hundley shoving empties benches, the Giants win second straight in LA

On the Giants podcast with Marko:

What started the Los Angeles Dodgers Yasiel Puig to shove the San Francisco Giants catcher Nick Hundley a couple of times after Puig tossed his bat up in the air and caught it after missing a pitch? Hundley told him in so many words to stop showboating and get back in the batter’s box.

Both Puig and Hundley were tossed out of the game that was tied 1-1 tensions were fueled in a tight contest but it was more the bat toss that got under Hundley’s skin. Puig was tossing his bat during Monday night’s game with the Giants Madison Bumgarner pitching.

It took the strength of four pitchers to keep the Dodgers off balance and off the base paths, but let’s start with the Giants’ starting pitcher Andrew Suarez–six-plus innings, two hits, three walks and four strikeouts. He looked good enough to complete the game.

The Dodgers have been faltering in the last couple of weeks and now find themselves in three-way battle for first place with the D-Backs and the Colorado Rockies.

The Giants and Dodgers close out this series tonight at Dodgers Stadium. The Giants’ Derek Holland (6-8) looks to get a sweep. In watching Holland in his last few games, can he help SF get that sweep?

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Rodriguez pitches another gem, surrenders only one run to Pirates

On the Giants podcast with Morris:

San Francisco Giants pitcher Derek Rodriguez is the pitcher of record and also contending for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. He won again, pitching seven innings, one run, two hits, one walk, four strikeouts in the Giants’ 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Rodriguez over nine games has a 1.28 ERA and has allowed eight earned runs in 56.1 innings pitched. That’s eight earned runs in 56.1 innings of work–a career low for Rodriguez as a starter. The Giants’ Nick Hundley hit a game-tying triple for an RBI, scoring Steven Duggar. Another key hit came from Joe Panik. Panik drove in his second run with a single that scored Gorkys Hernandez.

The Giants open a three-game series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on Monday night. The Giants will start Madison Bumgarner against the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw.

MLB The Show with Daniel Dullum: Will Bonds’ past transgressions get swept under the rug and go in the Hall of Fame?; Astros hear footsteps, A’s closing in on first place in the AL West; plus more

On the MLB The Show podcast with Daniel Dullum

1 He fought with the media. He admitted unknowingly to using steroids in grand jury testimony. He and his trainer Greg Anderson were well-known to frequent Victor Conte of BALCO Labs, according to Conte, former Giant outfielder Barry Bonds’ ex-friend and business manager, son of former 49er Bob Hoskins, Steve Hoskins, said that he and his sister, Kathy Hoskins, saw Anderson handle a needle in Bonds’ bedroom of his house during Bonds’ playing days Bonds would complain of a sore butt according to Hoskins from taking too many shots. They also recorded Bonds and Anderson talking about steroid use in the Giants clubhouse. Bonds later fired Hoskins as his business manager fast forward. Now, the Giants retired Bonds’ No. 25 and there’s a big push to get Bonds to the Hall of Fame. Will all these transgressions be swept under the rug and will Bonds eventually be elected to the Hall of Fame?

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Giants injuries, errors, lack of offense mounting drop third straight home game

USA Today file photo: Pittsburgh Pirates starter Trevor Williams hands his father a signed ball as Williams starts against the Giants tonight at AT&T Park in game two of the four game series this weekend

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

The San Francisco Giants who got dumped by the Houston Astros got a taste of what the Pittsburgh Pirates were all about on Thursday night in a five run 10-5 loss. The loss drops SF to seven games below in the Wild Card and the NL West. The Giants starter Andrew Saurez got rocked in the second inning surrendering two consecutive homers.

For Saurez’ pitching line, three runs, two homers, five innnings, seven hits, three earned runs, for his eighth loss. The defense Saurez didn’t help much committing three errors by Joe Panik, Evan Longoria, and Hunter Pence. The Giants will try it all over again tonight at AT&T Park Trevor Williams gets the call 9-8 and for the Giants Derek Holland 5-8.
