#2 Dave, this one was special as it was the first NFL game played in Mexico City since 2019 and the fans were into it as Garoppolo had opportunities to throw against the Arizona Cardinals (4-7) defense and helped run up the score for a 38-10.

#3 Running back Christian McCaffrey carried seven times for 39 yards with no touchdowns at it was a relatively quite night for McCaffrey but you just never know when he’s going to bust out.

The scarlet and gold are getting caliente at the right moment.

The San Francisco 49ers scored on four-straight possessions from the second quarter to the start of the third quarter to roll past the Arizona Cardinals in a 38-10 blowout victory on Monday evening at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico.

The NFL made its triumphant return since 2019 as Mexico’s capital city’s favorite team gave the crowd quite a performance.

San Franciso is getting hot at the right time having won three games in a row and regained the top spot in the NFC West as they hold the tiebreaker over the Seattle Seahawks, who were on their bye week. Arizona has lost three out its past four games.

It was a wet beginning to the game as the heavens poured down with a strong steady rain. Neither team was able to cope with the elements on their opening drives.

Arizona (4-7) drew first blood with exactly eight minutes remaining in the first quarter when Matt Prater’s 40-yard field goal completed an 11 play 58-yard drive. Quarterback Colt McCoy made his second consecutive start for the injured Kyler Murray who missed his second straight game dealing with a hamstring injury.

San Francisco (6-4) found its footing in the second quarter as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo marched the 49ers down the field in its longest drive of the season of 82 yards on nine plays. Garoppolo connected with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on a seven-yard touchdown reception.

“When Jimmy (Garoppolo) has been healthy for us and he has his guys out there, he plays at a very high level,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on his veteran quarterback’s performance.

The 49ers magic number was 39 during their next three drives as that was the number that finished off each scoring drive.

Jimmie Ward picked off McCoy after the ball bounced off the hand of running back James Conner on the Cardinals next possession.

San Francisco only needed three plays to cash in on Ward’s interception. On a third and three Garoppolo stepped up into the pocket and found tight end Geroge Kittle wide open over the middle and Kittle broke one tackle on his way to the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown with 8:42 left in the second quarter.

Arizona answered back when running back James Connor plunged in for a two-yard rushing touchdown that finished off a nine play 75-yard drive as that was the closest the Cardinals got on the scoreboard.

The 49ers opened the second half as they ran right down the throat of the Cardinals defense. Deebo Samuel took a pitch from behind the line of scrimmage and run an end around for a 39-yard rushing touchdown to give San Francisco a comfortable 24-10 lead.

San Francisco’s defense once again dominated the second half as they put the hammer down to any type of comeback by Arizona. They made McCoy run for his life in the high altitude of Mexico City with constant pressure as they ended up with three sacks and eight quarterback hits.

Once again for the third consecutive game the 49ers defense shutout their opponent in the second half. A late drive in the fourth quarter ended when Sam Womack III intercepted a pass from backup quarterback Trace McSorley inside the end zone.

The 49ers put the game away back-to-back touchdown drives to seal the route. Aiyuk earned his second touchdown of the game when he caught a 13-yard pass from Garoppolo near the end of the third quarter.

Then Kittle recorded his second touchdown of the game he took a short pass out in the flat from Garoppolo and ran down the sideline for a 32-yard touchdown for his first multiple touchdown game of the season.

Garoppolo finished with one of his best offensive performances of the season going 20 of 29 for 228 yards for four touchdowns and no interceptions. Kittle led San Francisco in receiving with 84 yards on four catches to go along with his two touchdowns. Running back Christian McCaffery and Samuel each has seven catches for 67 and 57 yards respectively. Elijah Mitchell chipped in 59 yards on nine carries to lead rushers.

McCoy went 24 of 34 for 218 yards with no touchdown and one interception in the losing effort. Rookie wide receiver Greg Dortch led all receivers with nine catches for 103 yards.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 6-for-11. Arizona went 8-for-16.

San Francisco is 5-1 against Arizona on Monday Night Football. The 49ers now have the most wins in the history of MNF with 52 surpassing the Pittsburgh Steelers who have 51.

The 49ers improved to 3-1 in international play with their most recent trip abroad was a 42-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in in London’s Wembley Stadium back in 2013.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Will Mayor’s office payback 49ers for what some called a dirty campaign?

Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor who was re-elected as confirmed on Wed Nov 16, 2022. The 49ers spent over $4 million to try and defeat Gillmor which failed. (file photo Mercury News)

On the San Francisco 49ers podcast with Marko:

#1 San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York paid millions to deliver mayoral candidate Anthony Becker who ended up losing to current Lisa Gillmor 14,376 to Anthony Becker 13,686. Gillmor wins by 687. How concerned has Jed have to be knowing that there was heavy campaigning against Gillmor sometimes some mudslinging and the 49ers could see payback from what some people called a nasty campaign.

#2 The election was Tue Nov 8th and in a tight race with over 95% of the ballot counted Gillmor was the decided winner on Wed Nov 16th from the Register of voters office in Santa Clara County. This was a crucial vote for York and the 49ers as York had been butting heads with Gillmor since Gillmor had been mayor and now they will have to try and do business another four years into her second term.

#3 Gillmor had sought maintenance revenue from the 49ers something both sides had haggled with over the years and when the opportunity came to vote Gillmor out of office York spent over $4 million in campaign money to get her voted out of office which the 49ers failed to do but by a narrow margin.

#4 Turning the 49ers next game up the team had been in Colorado Springs all week adjusting to the high elevation climate in preparation for tonight’s Monday Night Football game in Mexico City against the Arizona Cardinals. How beneficial do you see working out in Colorado and going onto Mexico City for Monday Night Football?

#5 Marko, how ready is Cardinal quarterback Kyler Murray he had been out with a hamstring and is expected to start on Sunday. He can be potent and drive the offense against the 49ers not to mention he can carry the ball.

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 How important was it for the San Francisco 49ers to practice this past week in Colorado Springs before playing above sea level in Mexico City on Monday Night Football.

#2 The 49ers are noted for building drafts which had players that had injuries previously like Javon Kinlaw, Kavon Alexander, or getting Dee Ford in a trade.

#3 Could the 49ers sign wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham 30 could be somewhat of a liability who is recovering in his ninth month from his second surgery from torn left ACL.

#4 The situation is shaky at the cornerback position Jason Varrett is out for the season, linebacker Samuel Womack sat for the second street week, Ambry Thomas has had his share of injuries and needing rest.

#5 The 49ers and Arizona Cardinal kick off a prime time spectacular in Mexico City on Monday Night Football. Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was out with a hamstring pull and is questionable for Monday. How do you see Murray’s possible return and these two teams matching up on Monday night.

49ers defense cracked the Herbert code in second half for 22-16 comeback win

Talanoa Hufanga and Deommodore Lenoir celebrate an interception to clinch the win for San Francisco at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday NOV 13, 2022. (San Francisco 49ers)

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — It was a tail of two halves for the San Francisco 49ers.

Their defense shutout the Los Angeles Chargers in the second half as the offense did enough for a 22-16 comeback win on Sunday evening at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco has won two games in a row, both against the two Los Angeles teams, and are 3-3 coming off the bye week under head coach Kyle Shanahan’s reign. Los Angeles has lost two of its past three games, all against NFC opponents.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had a very efficient first half as he was 14 of 21 for 161 yards and a touchdown. Herbert opened the game with a seven play 75-yard drive that resulted in a 32-yard receiving touchdown to wide receiver DeAndre Carter.

Los Angeles (5-4) were without both of its star receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams; each have missed the past two games with injuries.

It was the first time all season long San Francisco’s offense had all of its players healthy on the field as Deebo Samuel and Elijah Mitchell returned from their respective injuries. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had a full arsenal and spread the ball around efficiently and effectively.

“It was a fun win, it was fun to comeback out there with the boys,” said wide receiver Jauan Jennings on how excited the team was to have everybody back on the offensive side of the ball. “It’s just like, hey it’s a party man! It was a party except it was on the football field dog. So, I just had fun, I had a great time.”

San Francisco (5-4) went on a long 14 play drive in the first quarter that went 67 yards that ate up over seven minutes of possession. However, they had to settle for a 20-yard field goal from Robbie Gould.

Garoppolo then led a nine play 75-yard drive on San Francisco’s fifth offensive possession late in the second quarter where he completed the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

“I think it showed last week against the Rams, guys stepping up in different roles. It just showed again today, guys don’t care if they get 10 targets or one target, if we get a ‘W’, a ‘W’ is a ‘W’ and that is what we’re here for,” Garoppolo said.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who made his return after missing three weeks after being injured in the game against Kansas City, was ejected from the contest with 30 seconds left in the second quarter when he landed a controversial helmet to helmet on Herbert that was reviewed by the league before the officials dismissed him from the game for the unsportsmanlike play.

The 49ers defense bent but did not break in the first half as they held the Chargers to three Cameron Dicker field goals, including one when time expired in the second quarter to give Los Angeles a 16-10 lead into halftime.

“The second half, just like two weeks ago in our last game, defense hunkered down, they didn’t seem to make any mistakes, especially at the end with their (Los Angeles’) last two drives there, it was great,” Shanahan said.

San Francisco started the third quarter with another long drive, this time they went 12 plays and 67 yards with the same result as their long drive in the first a half, a Gould field goal from 26 yards.

Led by Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, San Francisco finally got pressure on Herbert in the second half and made him uncomfortable for the majority of the second half. They sacked Herbert three times in the second half.

“We just didn’t execute. We need to be better on third down and continuing to push the ball forward and getting first down but unfortunately, we didn’t do that today,” Herbert said.

San Francisco controlled the time possession 37 minutes to 23 as they ran for a season high 41 times accumulating 157 yards on the ground as they averaged 3.8 yards per carry.

The 49ers final long drive of the game gave them its first lead in the fourth quarter. San Francisco marched down the field on a 14 play 77-yard drive with a balance of rushing and passing plays. Brandon Aiyuk’s 24-yard reception set up Christian McCaffery’s two-yard rushing touchdown. Gould missed the extra point as San Francisco led 19-16 with 6:59 remaining in the game.

The 49ers defense did the rest and never allowed the Chargers to score another point. Safety Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Herbert on LA’s final drive to seal the deal as San Francisco sits a half game out of first place in the NFC West Division.

“We just went in and made some adjustments at half time, just continued to be physical and switched some things up. We just wanted to get after them up front and plat a little bit looser coverage on the back end and continue to force them to check the ball down and just rally to it,” Hufanga said.

Garoppolo finished 19 of 28 for 240 yards with only the one rushing touchdown but no interceptions. Mitchell led San Francisco in rushing in his first game back since the season opener with 89 yards on 18 carries. McCaffery chipped in with 38 yards on 14 carries to go along with his four receptions for 39 yards. Aiyuk led the 49ers in receiving with six catches for 84 yards.

Herbert ended up 21 of 35 for 196 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Star running back Austin Eckler was held to just 24 yards on just six carries. Carter led the Chargers in receiving with four catches for 64 yards.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 9-for-17 on third down conversions. Los Angeles was 6-for-16.

San Francisco snapped its five-game losing streak to Los Angeles and tied the overall series record at 8-8. The 49ers are 4-3 against the Chargers at home.

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, I guess San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle said it best on Wednesday after cornerback Jason Verrett on his Achilles tendon injury saying “It kind of sucks your soul out a little bit.”

#2 Joe, it was practice and there are different drills and different plays Verrett was working on with Verrett was trying to get into the line up and get ready for Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Kyle Shanahan broke the news to the team on the practice field you couldn’t hear a pin drop.

#3 Had Verrett made a comeback this Sunday it would have been his first game back since his knee injury in September 2021. Now with the Achilles tendon injury suffered this past Wednesday Verrett won’t be back until November 2023. He’s tried many times to come back but had injuries which required long recoveries.

#4 The 49ers will have to regroup as a team after the Verrett injury and hope that his absence won’t have an impact on the team’s morale going into this Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

#5 Joe, the Chargers have been playing some good football and have won four of their last five games. Their last win came against the Atlanta Falcons in a narrow 20-17 victory in Atlanta. Please size this one up as the Chargers and 49ers duel at Levi Stadium for Sunday Night Football with a 5:20pm kick off.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Grand jurors say they were followed and surveilled after grand jury report critical of 49ers

Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor is running against 49ers backed candidate Anthony Becker in the mayoral race for the City of Santa Clara. Gillmor is running for re-election in this Tue Nov 8, 2022 election (Business Journal file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 A grand juror report that said the San Francisco 49ers handling of their legal issues with the City of Santa Clara over their stadium management revenue was called a “hatchet job” and “contained dozens or lies” according to 49ers spokesman Rahul Chandhok. Chandhok said the grand jury had “stacked” the report with Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor’s allies who the Niners are trying to unseat in the upcoming Tuesday mayoral election. Chandhok said that the grand jury were a “kangaroo court” and “a partisan group of cronies co-opting the justice system” will the voters take the 49ers side or Mayor Gillmor’s side in the grand jury event.

#2 Former San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Quentin Kopp said that Chandhok’s comments are “rife with personal innuendoes.” Kopp said if he was the grand jury judge he would ask the Niners “why they shouldn’t be held in contempt of court?”

#3 There have been members of the grand jury who said they have been followed or surveilled after the 49ers report came out.
