San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: While Raiders Carr out 49ers Omenihu says to watch out for Josh Jacobs

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Charles Omenihu says to watch out for the Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs who could do some damage on offense (file photo ninernoise.com)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 San Francisco 49ers defensive end Charles Omenihu was concerned about Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs because he’s a back that can run the ball down the 49ers throats.

#2 Joe, Another thing about Jacobs he and wide receiver Devante Adams were key guys during that short Raiders four game winning streak spurt how concerned do the 49ers need to be with that tandum.

#3 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa who is tops in the NFL with 17.5 sacks is just two sacks away from tying former 49er Aldon Smith for the team record in sacks set in 2012.

#4 The Raiders who are 6-9 are being questioned about how committed they are to this game today in Vegas after benching quarterback Derek Carr. The Raiders wanted to avoid any injury for Carr and that would put them on the hook for his 2023 salary at $32.9 million.

#5 Finally Joe the 49ers are rolling their looking for their ninth straight win today and the Raiders have lost two out of their last three in less than a minute of play. Give us your prediction how you see these two teams matching up today at Allegiant Stadium.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Marko Ukalovic: With Carr out will 49ers have a walk in the park against Raiders?

San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders floor mat (photo from ebay file)

On the SF 49ers podcast with Marko Ukalovic:

#1 The San Francisco 49ers must have rung the bell of their opponents as they beat them and the next week they lost everytime now 0-13 after playing the 49ers?

#2 The Las Vegas Raiders who host the 49ers this Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and who benched former starting quarterback Derek Carr. Carr who has three years left on his contract Marko do you see the Raiders shopping him right after this season is finished?

#3 Back to opponents who are 0-13 the week after playing the 49ers. Would you say one of the other reasons for the loses is that this 49ers defense is so potent that basically quarterbacks to offensive lines that have faced them need more than one week to recover from such a physical battle?

#4 The 49ers who have won eight straight games quarterback Brock Purdy has really come in and shut the door on opponents and has avoided getting sack and has time in the pocket to throw.

#5 The 49ers in Vegas this Sunday as the Raiders have lost two of their last three games in less than last minute drives by their opponents. Does taking Carr out of the line up change the Raiders psyche going into this game against the 49ers?

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Carr benched looks to be finished with Raiders; Eagles express interest in quarterback

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) was feeling the pressure of the Pittsburgh Steelers defense all game long particularly the second half where the Raiders were shutout on Sat Dec 24, 2022 in Pittsburgh (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich Perez:

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels expressed his disappointment in the last two loses to the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers both loses came in the last minute of the games. The Raiders in the second half of their game in Pittsburgh were completely shutout and quarterback Derek Carr could not get the ball moving.

On Wednesday McDaniels addressing the media said that Carr will be benched for the next two games and it was also reported that Carr will not even be in Allegiant Stadium suited up or otherwise for the games against the 49ers and Chiefs as the Raiders finish out their season in the next two weeks in Las Vegas.

Carr was not at practice on Wednesday and most likely he was told by McDaniels when he came to practice Wednesday morning that he would be benched and that he needed to clear out his locker his season was done. There had been talk that the Philadelphia Eagles who are looking for a starting quarterback are preparing to make a trade offer with the Raiders who earned over $22 million this season with the Raiders has three years left on his contract which the Eagles and Raiders might end up splitting.

Jarrett Stidham will be the Raiders new starting quarterback and Chase Garbers will be his back up. Stidham got a few snaps this season will see action against a powerful San Francisco 49ers defense whose pass rush is one of the most effective in pro football no doubt this will truly be a big test for Stidham and the Raiders offensive line trying to protect him.

The Raiders might express interest in Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Matt Ryan if Stidham doesn’t pan out. Ryan will be a healthy scratch on Monday Night Football and will be replaced by Nick Foles. The Raiders might take a look at Ryan in the off season and he could be on the Raiders short list in finding a starting quarterback for 2023.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) throws to a receiver as he is pressured by Washington Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat (90) in the second half at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Dec 24, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 Dave, talk about how quarterback Brock Purdy has stepped into the role as starting quarterback after taking over for injured Jimmy Garoppolo looked like a veteran in that first game against the Miami Dolphins and has been unstoppable since.

#2 In his last game against the Washington Commadors Purdy once again had control in the second half with the 49ers scoring 14 in the third and 16 in the fourth. Purdy was able to move down field with almost no problem.

#3 The 49ers are Las Vegas against the Raiders on New Year’s Day the Raiders have lost two of their last three games in last second scores by the opposition how do you see these two teams matching up Sunday?

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Franco tribute motivated Steelers win that ended Raiders post season hopes

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens (14) scores during the second half of an NFL football game against the Las Vegas Raiders in Pittsburgh on Sat Dec 24, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony R:

#1 Above the topic of the Pittsburgh Steelers pulling out a miracle win against the Las Vegas Raiders in Pittsburgh on Saturday the tribute before the ball game for former Steelers star Franco Harris who ran back a deflected pass from former quarterback Terry Bradshaw during the 1972 AFC Championship for the immaculate reception for the win over the Raiders seemed to have motivated the Steelers before the game.

#2 The Raiders had the lead for most of the game Tony and it all started with in the first quarter when wide receiver Hunter Renfrow caught a 14 yard pass from quarterback Derek Carr for a touchdown making it 7-0.

#3 The Raiders Daniel Carlson rounded out all the scoring they would get for the rest of Sunday night with five seconds left with field goal in the second quarter. In the second half who would think leading by a touchdown going into the half this would be an end to the Raiders post season hopes?

#4 Talking about that second half what was badly needed for the Raiders who were shutout for two quarters in the third and fourth quarters.

#5 Tony, the Raiders will play their last two regular season games for pride now they take on the red hot San Francisco 49ers who have won eight straight games. Can the Raiders defense get past the 49ers O line and put pressure on 49er quarterback Brock Purdy?

49ers defense dominates Commanders in 37-20 win for eight win in a row

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) throws to a receiver as he is pressured by Washington Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat (90) in the second half at Levi Stadium Santa Clara Sat Dec 23, 2022 (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA — The San Francisco 49ers (11-4) were in full control in a 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders (7-7-1) on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco, who have already clinched the NFC West, continue to roll with their season best eight straight win. Washington have lost two in a row and their playoff hopes are in peril with two games left in the regular season.

Neither offense had nothing to write home about for most of the first half as they both looked like they drank too much eggnog the night before with combined punts.

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy had three balls tipped down at the line of scrimmage during the first two quarters that kept 49ers from establishing a rhythm on offense.

Washington looked to have the first time make a dent on the scoreboard when they went on a 17-play drive of 84 yards that took almost 11 minutes off the clock. However, linebacker Fred Warner stopped Antonio Gibson at the one-yard line on 4th and goal.

San Francisco (11-4) answered on the following drive in just three plays. Ray Ray McCloud ran an end around for a 71-yard rushing touchdown thanks to a great seal block set by wide receiver Willie Snead IV, who was activated off the practice squad, to cap off the 99-yard drive and break the deadlock. It was McCloud’s first career rushing touchdown.

Washington (7-7-1) gained back the momentum just before halftime when Juan Jennings had the ball bounce off his hands into the arms of Darrick Forrest at the 31-yard line. Tyler Heinicke connected with Jahan Dotson on a four-yard touchdown reception with 22 seconds left to even the game.

San Francisco opened the second half with a seven play 76-yard drive to regain the lead. Purdy found tight end George Kittle wide open down the middle for a 34-yard touchdown reception.

Once again, the 49ers defense stepped up to the plate when they needed to and killed a second Washington fourth down conversion when Heinicke tried a quarterback sneak on 4th and 1 at the Commanders 34-yard line.

San Francisco’s defense also won the battle of the trenches as they held the vaunted Commanders rushing attack to just 79 yards on the ground despite the two-headed monster of Gibson and Brian Robinson Jr., who led Washington in rushing with 58 yards on 22 caries for a 2.6 average.

“We have plenty of room to improve. It always looks good on the scoreboard when you get the win, but you have to be hard on yourself as a team in order for us to be great and take that step. We have to stop them from scoring. When you allow the team 20 points, you don’t like it. You have to do better,” 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw said.

The 49ers made the Commanders pay for that decision two plays later when Purdy rolled out to the left on a bootleg and found Kittle out in the flat. The Pro Bowl bound tight end ran back into the middle and glided into the endzone for his a 33-yard touchdown reception, his second touchdown of the game.

“He makes my job easy,” said Purdy regarding the connection he has with Kittle. “If you just get the dude the ball he’ll just take off. George (Kittle) is extremely explosive, more than people think. He does a great job with the yards after the catch. I wish I would’ve had him catch that third touchdown as I think I threw it a little short. (But) just can’t give a (Iowa) Hawkeye too many touchdowns in a game.”

Kittle has back-to-back games with two touchdowns receptions and is the first 49ers player to accomplish that feat since Terrell Owens did it twenty years ago in 2002.

Washington answered back just over two minutes later with a four play 75-yard drive that was finished with a Terry McLaurin three-yard diving touchdown reception from Heinicke.

Nick Bosa made the defensive play of the game with his second sack of the game. The Pro Bowl defensive end hit Heinicke from behind popping the ball up in the air as Jordan Willis recovered the ball at the Washington 11-yard line. Robbie Gould kicked his second field goal of the game, a 23-yarder, to give San Francisco a two-score cushion with 12:02 left in the fourth quarter.

“When you have as a good a pass rusher who is as good as Nick, those are the best guys who have a way to change the game,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Bosa cemented his defensive player of the year award with two sacks and leads the NFL with 17.5.

Curtis Samuel cut San Francisco’s lead to 30-20 when he caught a 20-yard touchdown reception from Carson Wentz, who came in and replaced Heinicke, who was benched by Commander’s head coach Ron Rivera, with 3:51 left in the fourth quarter.

Christian McCaffery closed out the scoring with a one-yard rushing touchdown on the 49ers ensuing drive that began on the Washington 38-yard line when the Commanders failed to recover an onside kick.

San Francisco scored six on their seven second half offensive possessions.

Purdy finished 15 of 22 for 234 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Kittle had his best game of the season with six catches for 120 yards to go along with his two touchdowns. McCaffery chipped in with 46 yards with 15 carries. Brandon Aiyuk contributed five catches for 81 yards.

Heinicke went 13 of 18 for 166 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and one fumble. Wentz was 12 of 16 for 123 yards and one touchdown in mop up duty. McLaurin led Washington in receiving with four catches for 77 yards to along with his one touchdown.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 4-for-11 on third down conversions. Washington went 7-for-11.

San Francisco leads the all-time series against Washington 22-12-1.

#2 In the win for the Vikings was this a matter of the Colts just simply let down or the Vikings have the makings of a competitive and challenging football team looking ahead to the post season.

#3 With the win for the Vikings the San Francisco 49ers (10-4) are maintaining the No.3 seed in the NFC this could be a neck and neck race a battle for the number two spot and the Vikings can feel the 49ers breath on their necks.

The NFC West title is back in the Bay.

The San Francisco 49ers jumped out to a big lead then hung on to defeat the Seattle Seahawks 21-13 on Thursday Night Football at Lumen Field.

San Francisco clinched the NFC West, their first since 2019, with its seventh win in row and swept Seattle this season. The Seahawks have lost two games in a row and four of its last five as their playoff hopes suffered a huge blow as they have fallen to .500 after a surprising 6-3 start to the season.

During the Niners (10-4) seven game winning streak, their defense has been dominant and the main reason for their current run. They made Seattle one-dimensional on offense as they forced quarterback Geno Smith to throw the ball 44 times.

“I thought the defense was unbelievable,” said head coach Kyle Shanahan regarding the league number one defense performance. “You didn’t give up a touchdown to that last drive…Our defense was unbelievable, they did it throughout the whole game and have been throughout the whole year.”

The legend of Brock Purdy continued to grow with another impressive performance behind center. The rookie quarterback from Iowa State, despite coming into the game with an oblique injury he suffered four days ago, led San Francisco on a nine play 86-yard scoring drive late in the first quarter. On 2nd and 8 from the Seahawks 28 yard-line, Purdy faked a screen to the left and then to the right before finding tight end George Kittle wide open over the middle for a 28-yard touchdown reception to break the deadlock.

“My mindset was I’m coming into this place to play and to start. Once the game started, I was ready to roll. I felt a little something throughout the game and what not on some throws but for the most part our treatment staff and everyone did great job getting me ready (to play) and I was definitely ready to play for four quarters,” Purdy said.

Seattle (7-7) was only able to manage a 38-yard field goal from Jason Myers in the first half as San Francisco’s defense forced three 3 and outs and only allowed one first down on the Seahawks first four offensive possessions.

San Francisco’s defense came up with the game changing play late in the first half. Smith connected with Travis Homer on a short reception when Dre Greenlaw came in with a jarring hit that forced Homer to fumble the ball. Charvarius Ward scooped up the ball and returned it for 40 yards to the Seattle six-yard line with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter.

Two plays later, running back Christian McCaffery run in a one-yard touchdown to give the 49ers a 14-3 lead heading into halftime.

The 49ers only need two plays to pad their lead to start the second half. On 2nd and 5 from the Seattle 46, Purdy once again hooked up with Kittle, this time on a 54-yard touchdown reception where Kittle eluded a tackle and was not to be caught by the Seahawks.

“Touchdown every time,” Kittle said what he thinks about when a play call is designed for him. “That’s your thought process. Whenever Kyle (Shanahan) dials something up (where) you know you’re gonna get the ball, try to speak it into existence. You gotta actually visualize it.”

San Francisco held down the fort on Seattle’s next drive as the home team marched down the field on a 10 play 42-yard drive which resulted in a 51-yard field goal from Meyers.

Seattle closed the gap to a one possession game late in the fourth quarter when Smith found tight end end Noah Fant wide open in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown reception with 3:35 left. San Francisco closed out the game when rookie running back Jordan Mason converted a 3rd and 3 with a 55-yard run to the Seattle two-yard line with 1:14 remaining.

“Obviously they do have a great pass rush, a great front seven, great guys on the back end. It felt like championship game. We didn’t get it done. We had our opportunities but just didn’t get it done,” said Smith.

Purdy finished the game 17 of 26 for 217 yards to go along with his two touchdowns, no interceptions and a QB rating of 117.0. Kittle led San Francisco in receiving with four catches for 93 yards and two touchdown night. McCaffery had his second consecutive 100-yard game rushing for 108 yards on 26 carries.

Smith went 31 of 44 for 238 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Tyler Lockett led Seattle in receiving with seven catches for 68 yards. Running back Kenneth Walker III had a quiet game as he chipped in with 47 yards on 12 carries.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 6-for-13 on third down conversions. Seattle was 4-for-13.

Lockett suffered a broken bone in his hand during the game and will need surgery to repair his hand. He is expected to miss two weeks.

San Francisco has swept the season series against Seattle for the first time since 2011.

The Niners have won 7-consecutive games for the first time since 2019 (Weeks 2-9; Week 4 BYE).

The 49ers are 5-0-or-better against NFC West teams for the first time since 2002.

San Francisco improved to 4-1 in primetime games in 2022, the team’s best mark in primetime since 2019 (5-1).

Purdy completed each of his first 11 passing atts. and was 9 of 9 for 73 yds. in the 1st qtr., becoming the first 49ers QB since Jeff Garcia [9 of 9 for 95 yds. at Buffalo. (12/2/01)] to post a 100% completion percentage and complete 9-or-more passes in a 1st qtr.

With 138 scrimmage yds., McCaffrey registered 100-or-more scrimmage yds. for the 42nd time since he entered the league in 2017, the most in the NFL in that time frame (2017-22). His 10 games with 100-or-more scrimmage yds. in 2022 is the most in the NFL.
