Kings Bested By Yet Another Playoff Bound Team – Losing to Hawks 123-113

The Sacramento Kings (19-56) had a great shot in their contest with the Atlanta Hawks (42-33) tying up the game in the fourth quarter after trailing for much of the game. The Kings just could not sustain the effort falling to the Hawks 123-113; DeMar DeRozan had the team high with 22 points and Maxime Raynaud had a double double, 18 points and 10 rebounds. Precious Achiuwa finished with 16 points and 6 rebounds.

Game recap: After the first 12 minutes of play the Kings led in this game 30-27. The Hawks turned the game around in the second quarter outscoring Sacramento 39-24 totally dominating the quarter taking a 66-54 lead at the half.

Sacramento would have a lot of work to do in the second half of this game. The largest lead of the game for the Hawks was 16 points but as the third quarter came to an end, Sacramento was only trailing by six points 88-82. The Kings Killian Hayes made some noise in the final two minutes of the quarter hitting a two-point jump shot followed by a 39-ft three pointer to close out the third.

After getting bounced around pretty badly for much of the game the Kings had put themselves in a great spot going into the fourth quarter only trailing by six points. Sacramento would need more from their starters. So far in this game the Kings were perfect from the line and had matched the Hawks from the field.

Four minutes into the final quarter the Kings had tied up this game at 97 mounting an impressive rally. The Hawks answered and within a couple minutes had pushed their lead back out to 105-97.

Atlanta had scored quickly and did not let-up for the remainder of the game. After having tied up the game the Kings found themselves trailing 111-99. With under five minutes left in the game, Sacramento was running out of time. The Hawks took back complete control and with 2 1/2 minutes left on the clock they had a 117-109 lead. For the remainder of the game Atlanta was locked in finishing off the Kings 123-113.

Three of the Hawks starters had scored 20+points in this game. Neikeil Alexander-Walker had the game high finishing with 27 points. Jalen Johnson had 26 points and CJ McCollum with 22 points. Every Atlanta starter had double figure in the game.

DeMar DeRozan had the team high for the Kings finishing with 22 points and 4 rebounds. Sacramento had three bench players in double digits. Daquan Jeffries had 15 points, Daeqwon Plowden 14 points and Killian Hayes 10 points. Plowden continues to really contribute off the bench.

Game notes: After losing a close game to the Orlando Magic Thursday night the Kings traveled to Atlanta for a matchup with yet another team in playoff position the Hawks. The Kings had Nique Clifford back on the court but Russell Westbrook was out with a toe injury with a possible return date of April 1st.

Keegan Murray has a projected return date of April 1st as well after a prolonged absence due to an ankle injury. Malik Monk started in place of Westbrook. The Hawks are missing some key players as well. Jonathan Kuminga is out with a knee injury, Onyeka Okongwu has a finger injury and Dyson Daniels also out with a toe injury. All three are projected to return March 30 for their matchup with the Celtics.

Sunday the Kings will take on the Brooklyn Nets looking for a win after beating the Nets last Sunday in a close one 126-122. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

Kings Fall To Magic in the Final Seconds 121-117

The Sacramento Kings (19-55) rallied in the fourth quarter of their game with the Orlando Magic (39-34) letting the game slip away in the final 50 seconds of the game. Despite the 121-117 loss DeMar DeRozan had a stellar game finishing with 33 points which was the game high. Every starter in the game had double figures with the Kings coming up just short in this one.

The Magic are tied for ninth place with the Charlotte Hornets in the Eastern Conference going into this game and they are a half game out of the eighth spot. Thursday night’s game is crucial for the Magic. The Magic took to the court without Anthony Black who averages 15 points per game and Franz Wagner who averages 21 points per game so they will be missed. Both are expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Raptors.

The Magic got on top of the Kings in the opening quarter leading after the first 12 minutes of play 39-30. Sacramento made up some of the deficit in the second quarter outscoring the Magic 29-26 but were still trailing by six points at the half 65-59.

The Kings got after it in the third quarter outscoring the Magic 31-28 trailing by three points going into the fourth quarter 93-90. Sacramento was still very much in this game after three quarters.

DeRozan was having a terrific game and with six minutes left he had scored 29 points and had five rebounds and six assists. A minute into the quarter this game was tied at 93. At 8:49 the game was again tied at 95.

At that point the Magic started to inch away and with 5:57 on the clock Orlando had a ten point lead. Too many missed three’s by the Kings in the final quarter hurt; they were 11 of 28. With so much on the line Orlando continued to pull away in the final minutes.

The Kings attempted a rally with four minutes left in the game pulling to within six points 109-103. Fouls in the final quarter were hurting Sacramento but despite that with 50 ticks left on the clock it was a one-point game 116-115 and with 20 seconds left in the game the Magic had a two-point lead 119-117.

The Kings Malik Monk fouled Desmond Bane who made both free throws. A three-point attempt by Monk missed and that was the game with the Magic prevailing 121-117.

The Kings put out a great effort with DeRozan scoring the game high with 33 points and 11 assists. Daeqwon Plowden had 23 points off the bench. Every Sacramento starter had double figures. Precious Achiuwa and Devin Carter each scored fourteen points, Malik Monk with 13 and Maxime Raynaud with ten points. The Kings had great ball protection and reeled in the turnovers, and were also solid from the line. They came up just short in a very close finish.

Paolo Banchero had the Magic’s high finishing with 30 points and Desmond Bane had 23 points.

The Kings came close in the final seconds of this game and will now play another road game facing the Eastern Conferences’ fifth place team the Atlanta Hawks. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for Saturday night 4:30 PM.

Kings Crushed By Hornets In Forgettable Game 134-90; Charlotte gets fourth straight win

It wasn’t pretty! The Sacramento Kings (19-54) were demolished by the Charlotte Hornets (37-34) 134-90. They did come into this game even more beat-up then ever with Russell Westbrook still out, and Nique Clifford and Killian Hayes injured last Sunday.

The Hornets were on fire from beyond the arc draining 26 and many of those three’s were second chance shots. With the playoffs at stake the Hornets had a palpable goal in their sites and they could not be stopped.

Game recap: The Hornets are fighting to move into playoff position. They are currently in tenth place but they are a half game behind the ninth place Heat and a game behind the eighth place Magic.

They certainly have a great chance to make the playoffs making Tuesday night’s game a critical one for Charlotte. Playing at home and with so much at stack they will be tough to contain. They have won their past three games and they are really playing like a playoff bound team right now. They are a three-point shooting team and the Kings will also have that to contend with.

The Hornets came out with a vengence leading after the first 12 minutes of play 34-25 and they were just getting started. It was like a runaway freight train that continued to pick up speed as the game wore on. There was no stopping the Hornets outscoring the Kings in the second quarter 38-22 taking a 72-47 lead at the half.

The Hornets continued their onslaught in the third quarter picking up where they left at the finish of the first half. They outscored Sacramento 41-29. Trailing by so much this game was decided in the third quarter.

The Hornets were on fire from beyond the arc and four of their starters had double digits going into the fourth quarter. Bench player Coby White could not be stopped scoring 27 points after only 18 minutes of play. Charlotte came unleashed from beyond the arc draining 23 triples with over seven minutes left in the game.

At 7:04 left on the clock, the Hornets were leading 124-82. They had punished the Kings in every quarter of this lop-sided game. Sacramento had been beat up offensively and defensively.

The Hornets were closing in on a season high for three’s, their highest 26 and with almost six minutes left in the game they had already drained 24. With two minutes left in the game Charlotte had tied their season high from beyond the arc.

While the Hornets did not break their record for three’s in the game, they certainly made a statement as to their push towards a playoff berth. The final in this game was 134-90 with their largest lead 46 points.

This was sheer disappointment for the Sacramento Kings and a game that they need to put behind them. They struggled from start to finish getting outscored in every quarter. Daeqwon Plowden had the high for the Kings with 22 points. Devin Carter finished with 18 points and Maxime Raynaud with 16 points. The Hornets had their way with Sacramento defensively and offensively.

The high for this game came off the Charlotte bench with Coby White scoring 27 points in only 18 minutes of play, and collectively the Hornet bench scored 61 points. Four of the Hornet starters had double figures. LaMelo Ball had 20 points and Moussa Diabate had a double double, 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Hornets have now won four games in a row.

Game notes: After getting back on the winning track beating the Brooklyn Nets 126-122 on Sunday the Kings headed to Charlotte and took on the Hornets on Tuesday night. While the Kings did win their last game it did come at a cost when both Nique Clifford and Killian Hayes were injured in the game.

Clifford suffered a left ankle injury in the game limping off the court in the fourth quarter. It has been reported that he has a left mid-foot sprain after just returning in the Nets game after a hamstring injury. Killian Hayes was also injured in that game due to a toe injury.

Of course the Kings will not see a post-season but these continued injuries rob the younger players of precious time and experience. Veteran Russell Westbrook was out for the Hornets game with right foot soreness after having missed the Nets game.

Malik Monk and Devin Carter will no doubt see increased backcourt roles in Westbrook’s absence. Precious Achiuwa who has been outstanding is also out with lower back soreness. And so go the injuries for the Sacramento Kings.

Thursday night the Kings travel to Orlando for a matchup with the Orlando Magic. Hopefully the Kings will get some of their injured players back on the court trying to shake off Tuesday night’s game. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

Monk, Raynaud Lead Kings Past Nets in 126-122 Shootout

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Sunday afternoon against the Brooklyn Nets after spending two days off at home. The Kings entered the game on Sunday with an 18-53 record, while the Nets were slightly worse, carrying a 17-53 record. It was a battle of two teams desperate for a top draft pick in hopes of turning the page on their franchises’ recent failures.

Limited by a plethora of injuries, the Kings started a depleted unit of DeMar DeRozan, Precious Achiuwa, Maxime Raynaud, Nique Clifford, and Killian Hayes. The Nets, also battling injuries and the all-but-overt tank, started a group consisting of Terance Mann, Ziaire Williams, Danny Wolf, Drake Powell, and Nolan Traore. The Kings fell to the Nets 126-122 on Sunday afternoon. 

In the first quarter, Malik Monk and Maxime Raynaud got going early for the Kings on the offensive end of the floor as they scored 12 and eight points, respectively. However, the Kings were outscored anyway by the Nets, 34-30, to take an early deficit into the game. The Nets got seven points from Danny Wolf to lead the way for them in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Kings and Nets mostly traded baskets as the Nets outscored the Kings 28-27. The Kings took a 62-57 deficit into halftime as neither team was able to create any real separation in the game. Maxime Raynaud continued his hot start for the Kings and added an additional nine points for the Kings in the second quarter while scoring 17 first-half points, and Precious Achiuwa added seven points for the Kings. On the Nets side, Ben Saraf led the way, scoring 10 first-half points, while Ziaire Williams and Danny Wolf were right behind, adding nine points each.

In the third quarter, the Kings flipped the script and outscored the Nets 28-20 to take a slim 85-82 lead into the fourth quarter of the game. Ziaire Williams had nine points for the Nets in the third, while Malik Monk led the Kings with six points of his own to help the Kings take the lead.

In the fourth quarter, the game transitioned to a slugfest where seemingly neither team played any defense. The Kings outscored the Nets 41-40 to take the 126-122 win over the Nets in their first meeting of the season. The Nets were led by Ben Saraf, who scored 22 points in the game, while Malachi Smith and Ziaire Williams each added 18 points in the game. The Kings were led in victory by Malik Monk, who scored 32 points, and Maxime Raynaud recorded a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double.

After the game, I asked the Kings how it has been having a veteran like Doug McDermott playing with them. Doug hit a three in the third and two threes in the fourth to finish the game with nine points on 3-4 shooting.

DeMar DeRozan was highly appreciative of Doug’s contributions this season.

“Doug is great, man,” DeMar told me after the game. “He deserves more credit. I think last year he was about ready to retire, and for him to come here, be ready, do what he been doing in this league at a high level when he gets in there, how professional he is, a lot of credit has to go to Doug. We always tell the young guys, Doug was the man back in the day, man. So for him to be the veteran guy, bring it every day, whatever is needed from him, it’s big.”

The Kings will head out on the road for a five-game road trip, starting in Charlotte on Tuesday at 4 p.m. PST.

Kings Crushed by 76ers’ Offensive Explosion 139-118 as Raynaud Continues Strong Stretch

SACRAMENTO, Calif, — The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Thursday night against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Golden 1 Center. The Kings, coming off a blowout loss at home at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs, were winners of four of their last six games and looking to continue their recent stretch of solid work.

The Kings fell to the hobbled Philadelphia 76ers 139-118 on Thursday night, and their record fell to 18-53 on the season.

In the first quarter, the 76ers jumped out to a big early advantage as the offense put up a monstrous 45 points in the opening frame. Justin Edwards and VJ Edgecombe scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, to get the 76ers off to their quick lead. The Kings managed 33 points of their own to keep the game within striking distance but dug themselves a deep hole, heading into the second quarter down 12 points. Maxime Raynaud led the Kings in the quarter with nine points and two assists.

In the second quarter, it was a rollercoaster ride as the Kings went up big in the early minutes but only managed to outscore the 76ers 29-26 when the dust settled, taking a 71-62 deficit into halftime. The 76ers were led in the quarter by Quentin Grimes, who scored 12 of the 76ers’ points in the second to bring his first-half total to 20 heading into the break. VJ Edgecombe and Justin Edwards scored 18 and 15, respectively, in the first half to carry a big portion of the 76ers’ scoring. The Kings were led in the first half by 16 points from Maxime Raynaud, nine from Doug McDermott, and nine from Russell Westbrook.

In the third quarter, the 76ers turned it up a gear once again and rocked the Kings, outscoring them 36-27 to reestablish themselves in the game. VJ Edgecombe continued to shine for the 76ers and added 13 points to his total of 31 through three quarters of the game. DeMar DeRozan found another gear in the third quarter for the Kings as he scored 13 points. The Kings found themselves in a 107-89 hole as they headed to the fourth down by 18 points.

In the fourth quarter, Dominick Barlow and Justin Edwards scored 10 and 12 points, respectively, in the quarter to up their game totals to 12 and 32, respectively, as the 76ers outscored the Kings 32-29 in the final frame. VJ Edgecombe led the 76ers in scoring with 38 points, and Quentin Grimes also contributed 27 points (20 in the first half). On the Kings’ side, Maxime Raynaud scored 30 points, and it was his second straight game of scoring 30+ after scoring 32 on Tuesday against the Spurs. Daeqwon Plowden was another bright spot for the Kings as he scored 20 points in just over 31 minutes of action, getting the start for Doug Christie.

Maxime Raynaud was a subject of discussion after the game as he has shown recently his ability to score at a high level from multiple spots on the floor. It certainly seems the Kings have found their backup center behind Domantas Sabonis going into next season.

The Kings will stay home to take on the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday at 3 p.m. PST inside the Golden 1 Center.
