Sacramento Kings podcast Barbara Mason:

  1. On March 14 the Sacramento Kings pulled an upset over the Los Angeles Clippers beating them 118-109 but Apr 5 Sunday night was a whole new ball game as the Clippers dominated in a must win for Los Angeles 138-109. The Clippers are currently in ninth place a half game behind the Trailblazers so the win Sunday night was critical for Los Angeles.

2. A number of Kings remained out for this game. Russell Westbrook remain out with a toe issue and they have listed the return of Keegan Murray as April 7 but will that happen? The Kings will see if either of them will be on the court as the season winds down.

3. The Kings did not get a whole lot from either starters nor their bench Sunday. In contrast, the Clippers Kawhi Leonard was on fire as was bench player John Collins.

4. Sacramento struggled for most of the game, they fell behind early and got blindsided in the third quarter as the Clippers really turned it on in the second half blowing the Kings out of the water. Three Kings players barely got into double figures struggling offensively.

5. With only three games left in the season the Kings will now face the Golden State Warriors Tuesday Apr 7 in San Francisco and again on Fri Apr 10 in Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Kings were back in action at the Golden 1 Center on Sunday night. The Kings played a rare nighttime Sunday game that started at 6 p.m. PST as they welcomed the Los Angeles Clippers to town.

The Kings, who are well outside of the NBA’s playoff picture, attempted to play spoiler to the Clippers, who entered the game a half-game back of the eighth play-in spot.

The Clippers definitively defeated the Kings 138-109 on Sunday night.

In the first quarter, the Clippers jumped all over the Kings to open the game. The Clippers put up a massive 42 points in the quarter as Kawhi Leonard led the way with 13 points. The Kings managed 32 points of their own in the quarter, aided by nine points from DeMar DeRozan, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Clippers’ pace and shot-making early in the game.

In the second quarter, the Clippers took their 10-point lead and expanded it to 12 points. The Clippers outscored the Kings 29-27 in the second quarter of action to take a 71-59 lead into halftime. The Clippers were led in first-half scoring by Kawhi Leonard, who had 15 points, and Darius Garland, who was close behind with 13 first-half points. The Kings’ best scoring came from Daeqwon Plowden, who scored 10 first-half points, as DeMar DeRozan and Nique Clifford each added nine of their own.

In the third quarter, the Kings trailed by 12 points and desperately needed a spark to mount a comeback.

The third quarter was unkind to the Kings as the Clippers outscored them 36-20 to blow the game open and expand their lead to 107-79, with a 28-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter. Devin Carter led the Kings’ minimal scoring efforts in the third quarter as he put up seven points for the Kings. The Clippers continued their offensive push with 11 more points from Kawhi Leonard, who finished the third quarter with 26 points to lead the Clippers.

The fourth quarter was more of an afterthought as the Kings were squarely out of the game.

In the fourth quarter, the Clippers outscored the Kings 31-30 to win all four quarters against the Kings and finish the game with a 138-109 victory. The Kings didn’t lead at any point in the game as the Clippers took the lead on the first basket and didn’t look back. Devin Carter, Nique Clifford, and Dylan Cardwell each scored seven points in the final quarter of the game to lead the Kings, while Kobe Sanders scored 14 fourth-quarter points for the Clippers as the game wound down.

The Kings were led in scoring by Devin Carter, who scored 21 points in the game, while Nique Clifford added 18 points in the contest. Big man Maxime Raynaud had an 11-point, 16-rebound performance, while Dylan Cardwell added 15 points.

The Kings will head on the road to take on the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday at 7 p.m. PST at Chase Center.

New Orleans Pelicans 113 (25-53)

Sacramento Kings 117 (21-57)

By Stephen Ruderman

SACRAMENTO–In a season that has lacked thrilling moments, the Kings created some Friday night, as they came all the way back from a 17-point deficit in the second quarter, led by March Western Conference Rookie of the Month Maxime Raynaud, to a late 117-113 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Following a 123-115 win over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, the Kings had a chance to do something they have only done four times all season, and that was win back-to-back games. The Kings would be up against another team that will be going home for the summer in less than 10 days, the New Orleans Pelicans.

Contrary to reporting by The Onion, the Kings won the opening tip, and we had a game here at Golden 1 Center Friday night. The Pelicans opened up an early 7-2 lead, as Zion Williamson and Saddiq Bey led the early charge. Maxime Raynaud scored all of the Kings’ first eight points of the night, and helped close the deficit to 9-8.

DeMar DeRozan hit a jumper to give the Kings their first lead of the night, 10-9 with 7:31 left in the first quarter. However, after Trey Murphy the III slammed one down just 35 seconds later, New Orleans took control of the game.

The Pelicans led 30-21 at the end of the first quarter, and then had opened their lead to 55-38 with 4:25 left in the second quarter. This was looking to be an uneventful laugher. However, the Kings closed out the quarter with a 17-11 run to close the deficit to 66-55 at the half.

By the half, Jeremiah Fears, who had not started the game for the Pelicans, led both teams with 18 points. Raynaud led the Kings with 17 points in the first half, and it wasn’t even close. Daeqwon Plowden was second with nine points.

The Kings carried their momentum into the third quarter, as they went on a 9-3 run in just the first minute and 43 seconds. The Pelicans just as quickly regained the momentum, and opened their lead back to 81-71 with 6:54 to go. The Kings were able to tread along for the rest of the quarter, and trailed 92-85 at the end.

Nique Clifford and Precious Achiuwa came alive in the third quarter, scoring nine and eight points respectively in the quarter. Bey scored eight in the third quarter, doubling his overall point total for the night to 16.

DeRozan scored six points in the third quarter to get his total for the night to ten, and he opened the fourth quarter with a pair of jumpers to close it to just a three-point game at 92-89. Devon Carter, who had only scored three points on the night, then hit a three to tie the game at 92-92, and the 15,422 here at Golden 1 Center went berzerk.

The Pelicans immediately retook the lead on a dunk by Murphy. Fears then hit a layup after being fouled, and hit his shot from the line to open New Orelans’ lead back to seven at 105-98 with 6:10 to go.

Plowden hit a three to send a message that the Kings were still coming. Bey was fouled, and hit both from the line. Raynaud then hit a jumper and a layup, and it was back to a two-point game at 107-105 with 4:25 to go.

In what had seemed to be a lopsided affair between two teams completely out of contention, a real thriller was arising, as this one was going to go all the way down to the bitter end. Raynaud re-tied it with a jumper, and after Fears put the Pelicans back ahead with a jumper, Clifford hit one of his own.

It was now 109-109 with 3:23 left. Plowden took a flagrant foul from Derik Queen, and hit all three from the line. The Kings were now ahead for just the second time Friday night, and were two minutes and 37 seconds away from an improbable win.

The game stayed tight, but the Kings held their lead for the remainder of the game, and won it 117-113.

Maxime Raynaud has had an incredible couple of days. Thursday, he was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for March. Friday night, he scored 28 points in an incredible come-from-behind win for the Kings. He also had nine rebounds, and four assists.

Raynaud was on hand courtside to light the beam, and most of the 15,422 here at Golden 1 Center Friday night went home happy.

Four games left for the Kings now, and they will welcome the Los Angeles Clippers to Sacramento for an evening game on Sunday. The Clippers are currently the ninth seed in the Western Conference, and are right now playing to determine which games they will play in in the play-in tournament.

Tipoff will be at 6 p.m.

Achiuwa and the Kings Upset Raptors 123-115

Toronto Raptors Scottie Barnes (4) and the Sacramento Kings DeMar DeRozan (10) battle for the ball at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Wed Apr 1, 2026 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

With nothing to play for the Sacramento Kings (20-57) sure played a great game Wednesday night beating the Toronto Raptors (42-34) 123-115. They outscored the Raptors in the first and third quarters, and tied Toronto in the second quarter 34 points apiece. The Kings took a 90-85 lead into the fourth quarter. There was no fourth quarter meltdown for Sacramento. When the Raptors threatened, the Kings kept their cool and did not panic. Precious Achiuwa was amazing finishing with 28 points and 19 rebounds.

After the first 12 minutes of play the Kings had taken a 27-22 lead. A win is not really a good thing for the Kings; a loss might put them in the bottom three with a chance for a first round draft pick.

While in no way suggesting tanking it would not be the end of the world to lose this game. The Raptors on the other hand who won this game and move into a tie in the Eastern Conference standings with the 76ers. The Magic two games behind with a few more games left on their season than the 5 games that the Kings have. It could turn out to be a photo finish.

Game recap: The Kings took as much as a ten-point lead at the start of the second quarter. A few minutes later the Raptors had chewed up the Kings lead taking the lead 35-34 at 8:33. Toronto continued to build on their lead and mid-way through the quarter had taken a 47-39 lead.

The Kings had all but erased the strong start the Kings had in the opening quarter. Sacramento was getting pummeled in the paint and beyond the arc. Closing in on five minutes left in the half the Kings pushed back trailing 47-46. Despite what they have faced all season there is still no quit in this team. At 3:27 to the half the game was tied at 50 and seconds later the Kings had taken back the lead 52-50 continuing to push. At the half, the Sacramento Kings had taken a 61-56 lead.

Precious Achiuwa was leading the team and already had a double double, 18 points and 15 rebounds. He was was the only King in double figures after two quarters. He has been amazing and he is only 26 years old with a lot of playing time ahead of him. He continues to grow and seldom does he disappoint. Malik Monk had the bench high in the half with nine points. For the Raptors, RJ Barrett had the high for Toronto with 14 points in the first half.

The Kings continued to push their lead taking their largest lead of the game 80-69 mid-way through the third quarter. With three minutes left in the quarter the Raptors took a time-out after trailing 86-77.

They needed this win to solidify a trip to the pre-season. Achiuwa continued to play lights out and now Devin Carter, DeRozan and Monk had shot double digits. With nothing to fight for, this team continued to fight; call it pride but they were on a roll. The Raptors would have to pull out all the stops to win this one. The third quarter came to an end with the Kings leading 90-81.

Going into the fourth quarter could the Kings pull off the upset? After trailing by 11 points, the Raptors pushed back pulling to within five points. Every time they pushed, the Kings pushed right back. With six minutes left in the game and a five point lead 108-103, the Kings called a time-out.

As the clock continued to wind down, the Kings began to struggle with turnovers and fouls. With 1:18 left on the clock, the Kings had a 118-114 lead. It was still anybody’s game. Sacramento made one final push and with under a minute left in the game they took a 123-115 lead. That would be the eventual final with Sacramento pulling off the upset.

The Sacramento Kings played a great road game upsetting the Eastern Conference sixth place team, the Raptors. Precious Achiuwa and DeRozan had the game high each of them scoring 28 points. Achiuwa also had a double double with 19 rebounds. Carter had 13 points and Monk had 18 points off the bench. It was a great win for the team although it does dim their hopes for a first round draft pick.

Game notes: Wednesday evening the Kings defeated the Raptors and with a handful of games left in the season. The Raptors are currently in sixth place tied with the behind the 76ers. Their circumstances could change but in all probability they are playoff-bound.

The Kings are headed into the off-season with a multitude of questions and issues. It should be a most interesting off-season for the Kings. DeRozan was cleared for action in Wednesday night’s game. He had been dealing with right hamstring soreness.

DeRozan played 35 minutes and scored 28 points facing his former team where he has really performed very well. He has averaged 19 points in his last ten games. Russell Westbrook, remains out and although Keegan Murray has an estimated return date of April 3 that seems to be doubtful. While he has been focused on returning there is really no point if he is not at 100%. He is just not ready for game action yet.

The Kings will now travel home to take on the New Orleans Pelicans Friday night April 3 at Golden 1. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

  1. As the NBA season approaches the finish line injuries continue to hamper the Sacramento Kings after an unprecedented year of disappointment.

2. Sunday the Kings took on another struggling team, the Brooklyn Nets after having beating them less than a week ago in a close game 126-122.

3. Once again the Kings had to re-arrange their starting lineups after more players were unable to play in Sunday’s game giving the young guys more minutes and more importantly more experience.

4.Devin Carter had the game high Sunday as he continues to impress along with a lot of the younger players. Some of these guys will play a huge role in the upcoming 2026-27 season.

5.Wednesday evening the Kings will play another play-off bound team the fifth place Eastern Conference Toronto Raptors as they face a very challenging schedule to close out the season.

Struggling Nets Come Out On Top Beating Sacramento 116-99

The Brooklyn Nets Drake Powell (4) gets a little hang time after dunking on the Sacramento Kings Precious Achiuwa (9) in the second half at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn on Sun Mar 29, 2026 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Sunday evening the Sacramento Kings (19-57) and the Brooklyn Nets (18-57) clashed for the second time in a week. After beating the Nets in the first of the two, Brooklyn came out on top in game two in a 116-99 final.

Sacramento’s Devin Carter had the game high scoring 20 points with eight rebounds and four of the Sacramento starters finished in double figures. It was a disappointing loss after a more than disappointing season.

In Sunday’s game, the Kings will continue to be short-handed missing several players who were able to play last night against the Hawks. Malik Monk is out with a shoulder issue and DeMar DeRozan is suffering from a Hamstring injury. Russell Westbrook remains out and both he and Keegan Murray have possible returns on Wednesday April 1st.

Game recap: At the Barclay Center in Brooklyn the Kings had a rough start in the first quarter that persisted throughout the first half. After the first 12 minutes of play the Nets outplayed the Kings taking a 31-18 lead. Brooklyn continued to pour it on in the second quarter outscoring Sacramento 37-27 taking a huge lead going into halftime 68-45.

The Nets controlled both ends of the court leaving Sacramento reeling after two quarters. Brookly had forced nine King turnovers in the first half shutting down the Sacramento long game limiting Sacramento to 26.7 % from beyond the arc.

Sacramento got back on track in the third quarter outscoring the Nets 28-18 and took that momentum into the fourth quarter going on a 10-6 run. They cut the Brooklyn lead to 92-83 but it would come to an end there as the Nets finished off the Kings 116-99 putting an end to their ten game losing streak and extending the Sacramento losing streak to four in a row. The Nets outscored the Kings in the fourth quarter 30-26.

Four of the Kings starters scored in double figures. Carter had the game high scoring 20 points and eight rebounds. Nique Clifford finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Precious Achiuwa had 16 points and Maxime Raynaud finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Some good play from the younger players as they continue to improve from the extended time on the court. This was the second matchup between these two teams in the past week giving Head Coach Doug Christie a good hard look at their young players.

Game notes: The Kings are down to the final countdown with only seven games left in the 2025-26 season. As much as any other team in the league the Kings came into the season full of promise, looking for a successful campaign.

What was to follow could not have been predicted as the team suffered a multitude of injuries throughout the entire season. It was devastating. Looking forward there are so many questions that of course lead with who will remain with the team going into the 2026-27 season.

There will be a shake-up without question and who will be the players that fill in the blanks. The Kings have seen a number of young players who have been more than impressive and they will no doubt play a huge role. Who will be drafted for the next season and what draft pick will the Kings be awarded.

Sunday the Kings played another team with much of the same questions, the Brooklyn Nets, who came into this game with a (18-57) record. Right now the Kings have the fourth worst record and will not take part in the lottery with the Pacers, the Nets and the Wizards in the three worst record slots right now. With a week’s worth of games still to be played this could change but this is where it stands right now.

The Kings will now travel to Toronto for a Wednesday evening matchup with the Raptors finishing off a five-game road trip before returning home to Golden 1. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
