OAKLAND- On a rainy Thursday night the A’s and Mariners battled it out which saw another heroic AJ Pollock home run help get Seattle the victory 7-2.

This game would be delayed by a bit as instead of starting at 6:40 the game started at 7:45 due to a rain delay.

For the A’s LHP JP Sears started on the mound with a 0-2 record and 6.23 ERA while for the Mariners RHP Logan Gilbert got the start sporting a 1-1 record and 4.23 ERA.

JJ Bleday made his regular season debut with the A’s in LF taking over for Conner Capel who started last game.

In the early innings both teams bats started out cold as the Mariners only had three hits by the sixth inning. While on the other hand the A’s only had one.

The bottom of the sixth inning saw Oakland’s offense come alive as Ryan Noda started things off by getting walked. Following that up Esteury Ruiz knocked in Noda to get the first run of the game. While on base Ruiz stole second and then Tony Kemp doubled sending Ruiz home.

In the seventh inning both Gilbert and Sears were relieved as Seattle called on Gabe Speier and the A’s had Domingo Acevedo come in.

Acevedo had a less than favorable inning as Jose Caballero got an RBI on a single to center field that sent home AJ Pollock bringing the score to 2-1.

However, the A’s were able to hold on to their lead until the ninth inning when a familiar foe struck. Once again Pollock played hero for the Mariners tying the game with a solo HR 2-2.

In the tenth inning Adam Oller started and continued the trend of shaky relief pitching for the green-and-white. After a walk Eugenio Suarez sent one to right center field and over the wall homering and giving Seattle a 5-2 lead. The run party was not over though as J.P. Crawford singled to right field sending home two runners extending the score to 7-2.

The A’s were given one last chance with Trevor Gott dealing on the mound for the Mariners but, other than a Roman Laureano single there wasn’t much to mention. Oakland fell once again to the Mariners late 7-2.

Of note in this game was the Mariners bottom three hitters Pollock, Crawford, and Caballero who combined for seven hits, 3 RBI’s and a HR.

“Not the prettiest win but they don’t ask how you got there as long as you got there and we got there,” manager Scott Servais said after the game.

The A’s next game will be the final game of the series against the Mariners were they hope to not get swept. The game will be at 12:37 p.m.

MLB podcast with Charlie O: Was Scherzer suspension too excessive?; Mad Bum out at Arizona but LA might be interested; plus more

New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer pleads his case that has clean hands in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wed Apr 19, 2023, but umpires ruled he had a sticky substance on his hands after he was ordered to wash his hands and was suspended for ten days by MLB (AP News photo)

On the MLB podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Charlie O, Last Wednesday at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, New York Mets Max Scherzer said that he was supervised by an MLB official when he was ordered to wash his hands during his last start to remove what the umpiring crew termed as “sticky substance” apparently that didn’t work he was tossed from the game and hit with a ten day suspension in your view Charlie O was this a justified ejection and suspension?

#2 Scherzer sat on the MLB Players Association representatives during the last contract negotiations and he’s been active with the players union is it a conspiracy to say that their might be some retribution from baseball for his union activity?

#3 The Arizona Diamondbacks released pitcher Madison Bumgarner on Friday. Bumgarner had been struggling going 0-3 ERA 10.26. The Dodgers might be interested in his services. The Diamondbacks are on the hook for $34 million remaining on his five year contract. There is this and next season remaining on the deal.

#4 Can you believe how the Chicago Cubs Drew Smyly’s no hit perfect game ended when Smyly went to field a grounder in between home and the mound hit by the Los Angeles Dodgers David Peralta Cubs catcher Yan Gomes flipped over Smyly’s back. Smyly lost his balance and ended up on the ground holding the ball but it was too late as Peralta was on base and the perfect game was no more.

#5 Can’t leave out the toughest story of the week the announcement of Oakland A’s team president David Kaval announcing the moving of the team to Las Vegas. Kaval announcing on Wednesday night the A’s have a binding agreement at the old Wild Wild West location at Tropicana and I 15 to build a new A’s park. First Charlie how heartbreaking is this for Oakland and the Bay Area?

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury just wanted to start off asking you about the Dodgers-Giants series that got started on Monday. The Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb said that the Dodgers are a juggernaut that no one should be fooled by the Dodgers before the series started with a three game losing streak and a .500 record.

#2 The Giants catcher Roberto Perez had been placed on the 60 day injured list with a rotator cuff strain and it got Austin Wynns the opportunity to start Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals however the next day Monday Wynns was moved off the 40 man roster. Blake Sabol has been doing his share of catching.

#3 The big news is that Giants catcher Joey Bart was reinstated after suffering a back strain, Bart rehabbed over the weekend with triple A affiliate Sacramento and started against the Dodgers on Monday night.

#4 Amaury, How bad do things have to get for he Oakland A’s (2-8) dropping the home opening series against the Los Angeles Angels two out of three and dropping two out of three to the Cleveland Guardian and getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays.

#5 The Rays went yard on the A’s losing twice by scores of 11-0 on Saturday and Sunday. The The A’s opened a three game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night at Camden Yards. The Rays went yard on the A’s losing twice by scores of 11-0 on Saturday and Sunday. The A’s had a lot expectations from starter Shintaro Fujinami but for the second consecutive game Fujinami got lit up.

MLB podcast with Charlie O: It just continues to get worse for A’s; It just keeps getting better for Rays

Tampa Bay Rays Randy Arozarena with folded arms is hitting .359 with two home runs and 11 RBIs one of the top hitters in the Rays line up (@RaysBaseball photo)

On the MLB podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Charlie O, it’s the tale of two teams one team the Oakland A’s are predicted to have a even rougher and tougher season than their 102 loss season and it’s not getting off to a great start either with a loses starting to mount now sitting on a 2-8 start of 2023.

#2 The other team that’s already getting lots of props the Tampa Bay Rays who have won their first ten games defeating the Red Sox in their last game at Tropicana Field Monday night. The Rays have been getting both plenty of pitching and hitting defeating the A’s last Saturday and Sunday in landslide wins 11-0.

#3 Got to ask you have impressive it is for the Rays were in good company with the 1939 New York Yankees. The Rays had a nine game win streak scoring four or more runs going and needed four games to catch the 39 Yankees who have 13 straight wins scoring four or more runs it didn’t happen as the Rays topped the Sox by a run 1-0 on Monday for their tenth straight win.

#4 The Rays also got some top notch hitting Sunday from lead off hitter Brandon Lowe with four RBIs and two runs scored, Randy Arozarena who got two hits and an RBI. The Rays simply are the talk of baseball right now with their 10-0 record.

#5 Charlie, you’ve been around minor league baseball a time or two talk about the Los Angeles Angels affiliate on Sunday the Rocket City Trash Pandas who allowed a hit in a doubleheader and came away with a split. Three Panda pitchers combined for a seven inning no hitter against the Cincinnati Reds affiliate the Chattanooga Lookouts Sunday. The Pandas allowed seven runs in the top of the seventh, five walks, hit five batters, a run scoring wild pitch and a dropped fly ball with the bases loaded which would have been the final out.

#6 Atlanta catcher Travis D’Arnaud has been placed on the seven day injured list. D’Arnaud received a concussion after the San Diego Padres Rougned Odor collided with D’Arnaud at the plate in the Padres loss to the Braves 4-1 Saturday at Sun Trust Stadium in Cobb County. How much or how little did the Buster Posey rule play a part in this collision?

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Doctor is in Oakland A’s official physician interview

Oakland A’s physician Dr. Allan Pont has currently been with the A’s for 38 years pictured with former A’s third baseman Eric Chavez ( file photo by Michael Zagaris)

The Doctor is In Oakland A’s Official Physician (Exclusive)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Dr.Allan Pont is the Oakland Athletics Official team physician, now for 38 years and going. I could not help but to ask him, a Doctor, about this experience of a Pandemic we have lived under for over a year now.

Pont: “I never seen anything like this, I was born in 1946, I remember Polio was a serious issue, we never went into the water… I ran a hospital when we had a flu epidemic, we might have 20 people sick, but nothing like this.

“In 1918 we had the Spanish flu which could had originated in Kansas” About becoming the Oakland team Doctor “I taught at Stanford, took job at what was the Children’s Hospital in San Francisco when Walter Haas bought the team, Roy Eisenhardt hired a consultant to look for a new doctor, Charlie Finley had 13 Doctors and they rotated and Roy who knows everybody, wanted a Stanford trained Doctor”.

He mentioned that is a very small field among all 30 MLB clubs, 60 Orthopedics and 60 Medical doctors In your opinion what is the biggest innovation in baseball as far as medicine is concerned?

Pont: “The Tommy John Surgery is the biggest change, it’s an amazing phenomenon, then we had the steroids era (pause) I testified in the Mitchell Commission during the steroids, but the Tommy John surgery, like one-third of pitchers”

Doctor Pont specified that he is an Internist not an Orthopedic, but when asked about the myth that young kids in high school should not throw a curve-ball because it could tax their arms, he said:

Pont: “I don’t know if that is true especially if you are strong, is all about grip not motion but I do not really know what causes Tommy John, might be too much pitching”.

The A’s physician is a big baseball fan.

Pont: “I was born in Montreal, Canada and lived there until 1974, as a 7-year old I would take the bus to see the Minor League Montreal Royals compete, I remember players like Sandy Amorós, Tommy LaSorda, Don Drysdale, I became a Dodger fan, I remember one year during an exhibition game Jackie Robinson playing for Montreal”. Doctor Pont mentioned historic Jarry Park in Montreal.

We wish the Doctor a good season and we thank him for his courtesy of given this interview. Who was the first team doctor? In the 2nd century AD the first ‘team doctor’ also known as Claudius Galenos (131 to 201 AD), he was appointed as doctor of the gladiators in the Pergamum Kingdome. The physician only became involved if there was an injury.

Stay well and stay tuned.
