On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 In the last San Francisco 49ers (2-4) game on Sunday Night Football the field was sloppy, the ball was slippery and the play was just drenching against the visiting Indianapolis Colts (3-4) at Levi Stadium or better dubbed the Atmospheric River Bowl.

#2 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had been questioned this week about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and will he be the starting quarterback this Sunday in Chicago. Shanahan said he had a whole team to worry about who was going to start not just at the quarterback position. Shanahan later said that Garoppolo will start this Sunday.

#3 The 49ers are at Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears (3-4) this Sunday. The Bears in their last game were crushed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-1) 38-3. The Bears absolutely had no offense going for them quarterback Justin Fields threw 22-32 for 184 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. The 49ers are three point favorites over the Bears.

Turnovers and penalties doom 49ers in 30-18 loss to Colts

How long can San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (10) hang on with pressure to start back up Trey Lance whose waiting on the sidelines. The 49ers suffered their fourth straight loss Sun Oct 24, 2021 to the Indianapolis Colts at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif—Mother nature was a force with its atmospheric river but in the end, the San Francisco 49ers shot themselves in the foot.

On a stormy night in Santa Clara, the Indianapolis Colts took advantage of the San Francisco’s miscues in a 30-18 victory on Sunday evening at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco have lost a season worst four games in a row after starting the season 2-0 and currently sit in the bottom of the NFC West. Indianapolis have won three out of its last four games after starting the season 0-3.

Everything looked to have gone San Francisco’s (2-4) way to start out the game. They opened the game with a good looking drive to draw first blood. Their eight play 78-yard drive was capped off with a 14-yard rushing touchdown by Elijah Mitchell. The rookie running back amassed 43 of the 78 yards on just four rushes. Kicker Joey Slye missed the extra point.

Indianapolis (3-4) gave the ball back to San Francisco on their first play of their opening drive. Safety Jimmy Ward popped the ball loose from Colts running back Johnathan Taylor and linebacker Fred Warner recovered for San Francisco at the Colts 28 yard line.

The 49ers were able to turn the Colts gift into three points as they went 12 yards on five plays and finished off with a 34 yard field goal by Slye.

The Colts responded on its second drive of the game. Colts quarterback Carson Wentz made a nice play-action fake to Taylor and found a wide open Mo Alie-Cox in the the flat as the Colts tight end danced into the endzone for a 11-yard touchdown reception to cut the deficit to two points.

San Francisco’s defense came up with a big turnover at their own four yard line with Indianapolis threatening to get into the endzone to start the second quarter. Nick Bosa pressured Wentz into a desperate shovel pass attempt that landed directly in the hands of linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for his first interception of the season.

The heavy rain started coming down halfway through the second quarter and had an impact on the game. Colts running back Nyheim Hines couldn’t corral a pass that hit him right in the hands while running wide open. The play which could have been a touchdown resulted in a punt for Indianapolis.

Deebo Samuel also dropped a pass that hit him in the numbers from 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garopplo.

“I think the weather played a little bit of a role,” said Garoppolo. “Started to pick up there a little bit. But we didn’t execute. I think too many mistakes stacked on top of each other. You can’t do the and win football games consistently.”

Samuel had the ball punched out of his hand after a reception by Darius Leonard and was recovered by Anthony Chesley at the 49ers 28-yard line.

The ensuing drive for Indianapolis had them gain its first lead of the game late in the game on a one-yard quarterback keeper by Wentz that had him sprint to the right side with a dive into the endzone with 1:00 left in the half. The goal line situation was set up by Emmanuel Mosley’s 19-yard passing interference penalty inside the endzone. The two point conversion attempt failed.

In the second half the Colts defense made it difficult for the 49ers to establish the run game that worked so well for them earlier in the game. Indy’s defense played with an eight man front for the majority of the game forcing San Francisco to beat them through the air.

More penalties and turnovers were the difference in the second half that allowed the Colts to expand their lead.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t mix words about his team’s performance in front of a national audience.

“We’re not doing good enough. It’s been a struggle all year. Today was the worst. We gave them too many explosive freebies, especially the two touchdown drives in the first half,” Shanahan said.

AL-Quadin Muhammad sacked Garoppolo and forced a fumble that Kwity Paye recovered with under five minutes left in the third quarter.

On the ensuring drive, 49ers safety Jaquiski Tart was flagged for a 38 yard passing interference call in the end zone on Colts receiver Michael Pittman Jr. It set up Taylor’s five yard rushing touchdown with 3:45 left in the third quarter to give the Colts an 20-12 lead.

Taylor rushed 18 times for an evening best 107 yards and a touchdown.

San Francisco cut the lead to a two-point deficit when Garoppolo led a three play 70-yard drive resulting in a Samuel 14 yard touchdown reception. The two point conversion attempt failed to even the score.

Samuel finished with seven catches for 100 yards and a touchdown as he was the only target Garoppolo was able to connect with during the game.

Up 23-18 with under three minutes left, Indianapolis iced the game when Wentz threw a deep ball down the right sideline that Pittman was able to jump up over cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and pull in the ball for a 28 yard touchdown to seal the deal for the Colts.

Xavier Rhoades intercepted Garoppolo with a minute left ending any chance of a comeback by San Francisco.

Garoppolo finished 16 for 27 for 181 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. His counterpart Wentz went 17 for 26 with 150 yards and two touchdowns.

It was a sweet homecoming for Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who was traded to the Colts during the offseason, as he had five solo tackles and was motivated to play well against his former team.

“I said, ‘I knew this was personal for you,” said Taylor who along with Buckner were the last players to leave the field after the game. “And I’m glad that we were able to pull it out even in these conditions.’ And he said, ‘Listen JT, as long as we got the win.’ As long as we got the win.”

Buckner said he tried to keep an even keel when preparing for the game during the week but it was difficult knowing it was his first game against his old team in his old stadium.

“This win meant a lot. It was definitely personal for me, you know? I wasn’t trying to get too high or too low throughout the week, but it meant a lot.”

GAME NOTES: The 49ers were without backup quarterback Trey Lance who was dealing with a sprained knee. There were also without starting left tackle Trent Williams who was dealing with both ankle and elbow injuries.

The last time the 49ers let an opposing running back rush for over 100 yards was back in October of 2019.

UP NEXT: The 49ers next two games they head to Chicago to face the Bears at Soldier Field this Sun Oct 31st a 10:00 AM PDT kick off and on Sunday 11/7 as they host the Arizona Cardinals at 1:25pm at Levi’s Stadium.

Raiders display varied offense to win 33-22 over Eagles.

The Las Vegas Raiders (5-2) came out on fire on an office and the fence playing a great all-around game beating the Philadelphia Eagles (2-5) 33 to 22. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr distributed the ball to varied receivers and running backs in a great effort of offense that the Raiders have not seen in a while.

The defense added a superior effort in shutting down Jalen Hurts. Kenyan Drake had a tremendous game running the ball as did Josh Jacobs in key situations. Brian Edwards scored a tough 2 yard touchdown and is beginning to really blossom as wide receiver for the team.

The bye week for the Raiders is well deserved they really played well these first weeks of the season. Unfortunately they had a hiccup with Coach Gruden when they lost to the Chicago Bears on Oct 10th at Allegiant Stadium but they’ve seemed to have overcome it.

Carr had time to throw the ball on Sunday improving his pass to complete ratio going 31-34 for 323 yards for two touchdowns and was intercepted once. Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia who is now 2-0 “The offensive line today set the tempo for what we’re trying to do. Not only in the run game, but pass protection. They kept him clean with no sacks. They’re a young group that’s on the come up and they’ve been practicing extremely hard. They were exciting to watch..” said Bisaccia.

For the Eagles who lost their fifth game of the season quarterback Jalen Hurts just couldn’t get more than half of his passes completed going 18-34 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles scored seven in the first quarter and 15 in the fourth. Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox said they tried to get at Carr today on the defensive end today but just couldn’t stop him, “Getting rid of the ball quick. You go out and use a stopwatch and see how the ball is going quick at the end of the day, he was on fire. We didn’t get to him.” said Cox.

The Raiders head into a bye week next week Oct 31st and will go to New Jersey to face the New York Giants on Sun Nov 7th at the Meadowlands.

Raiders come out energized shut down Broncos 34-24; Bisaccia gets first win as Raiders head coach

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia greets Denver Broncos fans at Empower Field in Denver just before game time on Sun Oct 17, 2021 Bisaccia’s first game as head coach for the Raiders since Jon Gruden’s resignation.

Raiders come out energized shut down Broncos 34-24.

By Rich Perez

Las Vegas Raiders beat writer

The Las Vegas Raiders (4-2) came out truly inspired today and beat the Denver Broncos (3-3) 34-24 in a game that really was never close at all at Empower Field Stadium in Denver on Sunday. David Carr started the scoring with Henry Ruggs to make it seven nothing very quickly in the opening drive. Teddy Bridgewater came right back and scored for the Broncos to tie the game but… it was never close right after that, as the defense took over for the Raiders.

The Broncos attempted a fourth quarter come back if you can call it that down 31-10 at 11:16 Bridgewater threw for a 12 yard pass to receiver Courtland Sutter. Denver cut the lead to 31-17. At 7:57 Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson booted a 30 yard field goal to make it 34-17. The Broncos last score of the afternoon at the final 1:12 when quarterback Noah Fant caught a Bridgewater four yard pass for the Broncos ten point win.

The Las Vegas defensive line dominated today as Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater struggled all day from pressure out on him all game long. Primarily from Max Crosby. The Raiders looked inspired to play well for the new coach and to show the world that they were focused once again on winning football games. Bridgewater threw 35-49 for 334 yards, three touchdowns and was picked off three times.

Carr threw 18-27, 341 yards, and two touchdowns. Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake both carried for a touchdown for the Raiders. The Raiders scored ten in the second quarter and 14 in the third quarter for the bulk of their offense. This being Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia’s first game at the helm since the resignation of Jon Gruden said things flowed well on the way to his first Raiders victory as head coach “The best part for me was to get on the grass,” Bisaccia said. “The worst part for me was figuring out the headset. Once you get on the field and the game goes, a lot of our responsibilities were the same. There was really good dialogue” with his coordinators.”

Next week the Raiders take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Las Vegas in what should be an interesting game against the up-and-coming team lead by QB Jalen Hurts.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Will 49ers shop Garoppolo or will they hang onto him as Lance isn’t ready?

San Francisco 49er quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who did not play in the 49ers last game on Sun Oct 10, 2021 in Glendale against the Arizona Cardinals is seen on the field at State Farm Stadium before the game (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 The 49ers who are on a bye week this Sunday and have lost three in a row and three games out of first place in the NFC West and have two injured quarterbacks have a lot to recover from going into next week’s home game against the Indianapolis Colts.

#2 On quarterbacks injuries Jimmy Garoppolo left calf soreness and Trey Lance twisted left knee will they get enough recovery time to get a start for next week’s game against the Colts.

#3 Garoppolo who missed week 5 and ranks 18th in passing in the NFL is he going to be commodity of sorts as the 49ers are rumored to be interested in shopping him or will they hang onto him because Lance isn’t ready yet?

#4 Lance who carried during the last game against in Arizona and got injured running the ball and head coach Kyle Shanahan and said one of many times that Lance isn’t quite ready yet to step into the starting role. Lance was 15-29, 192 yards, carried for 92 yards and threw for one touchdown.

#5 The 49ers are 17th place in total defense and place 11th in rushing and it’s unlikely that they will not not move up the scale to Super Bowl caliber numbers over their next 12 games anytime soon as the 49ers injuries of DeForest Buckner and Raheem Mostert are just too hard to replace at this juncture.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Olson to get more expanded role as offensive coach; more play calling this Sunday in Denver

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich with former head coach Jon Gruden gone next man up on offense is offensive coordinator Greg Olson who is looking at an expanded role in running the Raiders offense.

#2 Olson 58, will be doing the play calling and he’ll be getting the plays to quarterback Derek Carr. Gruden has been the play caller for the offense since 2018.

#3 Olson spoke to the media Thursday afternoon saying not a lot will be changed with the offense. Olson said there might be a different flow but don’t expect any major changes from the playbook with Carr’s play calling.

#4 How much of an advantage does it have to be for Olson to have been working with Carr since Carr’s rookie season under center?

#5 How much of advantage will it be for Carr to throw against the Denver Broncos defense who has been struggling. The Broncos got beat rather handedly by the Pittsburgh Steelers in their last game Sunday 27-19 in Pittsburgh.
